My experience at Mitchells over the past 32 years has been nothing less than fantastic. I was always helped by Bruce L. and he was the very best. I was in the store yesterday and Bruce told me that he was retiring after 43 years at Mitchells. This was his only job. Bruce is beyond description of his merits in being customer oriented. Mitchells must be a great place to work because so many employees have been there for decades and they know one of their most important assets are their employees. Bruce's shoes will be very hard to fill but if anyone can do it, it will be Mitchells. I wish Bruce the very best as he walks through the front doors onto the Post Rd. for the last time. This was my first time in the store today and I was disappointed by my treatment from staff. I wasn't greeted by anyone or asked if I needed assistance. Also, when a designer was explaining her beautiful designs to me we were interrupted by a sales assistant introducing a client to the designer. The only difference I noted between myself and everyone else was that I was a person of color. I only assume they thought I didn't have money to spend. I love how they have things that are literally last season on sale for full price when you can go on farfetch or netaporter to get stuff that's current or what's currently at Mitchell's on sale. We had such a wonderful experience while browsing Mitchells. The price tags are pretty shockingly high, but this is where you get the best designer names and quality in the area. Thought the help would be as snotty as the patrons but they were actually incredibly nice. There is one man- I wish I could remember his name- a somewhat older gentleman who was I think the most helpful, nicest salesperson I've ever encountered (and made cappuccino for us!!). And I need all the help I can get with fashion, as I tend to get overwhelmed in large department stores, this store is the perfect size. They have an incredible men's department. They also have the best Santa Claus every year and treat families to a wonderful Breakfast with Santa that is amazingly free. Thanks Mitchells -- for the visits with Santa ever since our little one was 2 months old, incredible shopping experience and teaching me I was wrong - that shopping in a place where the snobbiest of the snobs shop doesn't mean you will be helped by snobby or aggressive staff. Five stars from me as where else can you shop at the same store you did while at boarding school? I still remember a bright red wool sweater I bought back then. Today's purchase was a slate gray silk camisole with matching Jean jacket - a stunning color. In between I've had lots of "firsts" here including my first dreamy Loro Piano cashmere sweater. Too bad no shoes can force me out of my flip flops as they have a lovely shoe department. When I'm in town I enjoy going for the Saturday morning bagels and reading the papers there. I was a first time customer when I ordered a beautiful dress from Mitchells earlier this year (at an amazing discount!) to wear for my wedding at City Hall. Although the dress didn't arrive in pristine shape and needed to be sent back for minor cleaning, Mitchells was very responsive, completely sympathetic to the issue and covered everything in a friendly, responsible and professional manner. But find the right sales associate and you will never need to venture to the city for clothing again. I lived in Beverly Hills for 22 years and didn't experience anywhere near the rudeness I got when I wandered into this store looking for a dress shirt with my husband. The salesman asked my husband what size he wore. When my husband responded, the man laughed and said, "No. Really. Maybe years ago. But now? I don't think so." I walked away and let my husband deal with the guy. Not a single person spoke to me while I looked around. I stood with a shoe in my hand waiting for help while the overdressed women who worked there, chatted. I gave up. My husband came up to me and said that the salesperson suggested to him that he try "Macy's or some other discount store" when my husband asked if there was a different shirt available than the one presented to him. I guess the guy thought he was complaining about the price and not the style. read more

Went in looking for a tie and pocket square. I was browsing around for ten minutes and didn't even get a hello from an employee. There were two guys who worked there standing not ten feet from me talking about what they did yesterday, without giving any acknowledgement of my existence there or that I might want some help. At one point I even looked up and made eye contact with one of them, and they continued to ignore me. Incredibly rude; I walked out immediately after that. The last few times I visited the store, I couldn't get anyone to assist me. One time I went up to a cashier to ask the secret of getting help in the store. A few days ago, I was in the Hermes department looking at ties for my husband. A salesperson approached me, said, hi, I responded, and then she walked away. I bought a pack of handkerchiefs, and even got snubbed while paying for them. The cashier ignored me, and started speaking to a friend! Find someone to work with there and you will have a consistently excellent experience. Going it alone brings mixed outcomes. Here's what I wrote right after I shopped on 12/19/2018: "1 Star. Never going back. I've been a loyal shopper for 10+ years and today will be my last purchase. Yes, they have beautiful and luxurious clothes and shoes. Yes, they have free coffee and water and M&Ms. But they couldn't be bothered to say hello to me - let alone help me make any kind of selection - until it was time to fork over my $743 for two dress shirts and a tie. I walked the ENTIRE store and no one offered to get a size for me or help me find anything. I wasn't alone, by the way. There were two young men in the suits department who couldn't get ANYONE to say greet them or help them. It was so bad that they asked ME for help. They were shopping for tuxedo suits and shoes for a wedding. They were Asian. So I guess there is a "look" that you have to have to get someone to help at Mitchell's. And no, it's not because of "The Holidays". There were at least 10 open parking spaces in front of the store along the Post Road. Shame on Mitchell's." UPDATE, 1/1/2019: I received three follow up phone calls from Mitchell's: one about an hour after I left the store, a second about a day later from Bob Mitchell and a third phone call from my usual style specialist. Everyone expressed their regret and apologies for my experience. They said they "dropped the ball" or "missed the mark" on my visit and they really wanted to make things right. Bob Mitchell (my second caller) assured me that he would have a discussion with his staff about making sure they don't "negatively profile" any shoppers [my words, not his]. I am willing to believe that this was an unusual experience for them and I've been back to give them another shot. My style specialist connected me with someone in the men's department and I feel like I have a go-to there now. I'm really happy about that because deep down, I knew that I didn't want to try to buy my husband his suits on line. The store is really very nice and sits in a good location in Westport on Post Road. The problem is three-fold, starting with the selection. First, Mitchells should consider hiring some younger stylish buyers. The store is clearly geared toward women 50 and older, or who are looking for business, cocktail or formal attire. Considering the affluent community of Westport and surrounding towns, it is unfortunate that if someone who doesn't want to look like they are over 50, has to drive to White Plains or Greenwich to shop for designer styles. Second, pricing. While I am more than willing to pay a bit extra for the convenience of shopping in town, I am unwilling to pay 20,40,60% more for exactly the same clothes with a smaller selection for the same designers they have at Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom or Saks Fifth Avenue. Lastly, the staff. While there is a certain charm to shopping at a store who does onsite alterations, boxes your purchases beautifully and offers everything from soda to candy to their guests, it is equally as important to not treat customers based on the sales staff's perception of their net worth. Let me just be clear, just because I walk into the store wearing workout clothes and nikes, does in no way relate to what I can afford to spend. Mitchells is a family owned business, employing many family and friends as sales associates - perhaps they should all take a page from Bill Mitchell's book on how to treat customers and not assume they know what the spending of a customer will be based on if they are carrying a designer purse or wearing designer heels. read more

I moved to Kansas City in 1983 and still buy most of my things from either Mitchell's or Marshs for the best brands and the best service. This is the place for quality, service, and personalized attention. The Mitchell family should be hailed as the gold standard of the industry. The staff is attentive, helpful without being aggressive, and understands the needs of their customer. "The customer comes first with "hugs" is an understatement". You can't find this type of establishment easily. Mitchell's is for the discrimminating individual whom is willing to pay liitle more and experience all the services the staff and Mitchell's has to offer. I needed alterations of a suit bought there three years ago and was done at no charge and they delivered it to my hotel room while I was on a business trip!! From breakfast on Sat., the television, and the snack and beverage area is plus especially when bring the children. Ths staff even helped with my children. If a curated version of Bergdorf's or Neiman's sounds good to you, don't miss Mitchell's in Westport or its sister store, Richard's in Greenwich. This store is high end, no doubt about it, but the service is the best you will get anywhere. Bigger stores can't service customers like Mitchell's does and smaller stores won't. I am always amazed at how nearly every salesperson knows who I am when I enter the store and has a finely developed sixth sense about leaving me alone to shop but materializing to help at exactly the right moment. They also know what I have and, more often than not, what I need (or want). This is the place for jewelry (best in the state including the new standalone Saks Vault in Greenwich), relaxed Hermes shopping (surprisingly good selection of the most popular items), Celine and so on. The only brand missing is Chanel, which is Chanel's loss. You won't miss Chanel though because everything else more than makes up for it. If you're looking for some high end retail therapy, this is absolutely the place in Connecticut. There is no competition. I love shopping in New York but I still prefer to come here.
