I love Mittels! I've had a watercolor that had a terrible frame and wanted to reframe for over a year but wasn't feeling confident with the framers I talked to. Then I remembered Mittels and so glad I did. They did an AMAZING job. They let me take as long as I needed to choose what I wanted and we tried so many combinations even when it was after closing. They just have the experience to instill confidence and all previous indecisiveness was resolved. Just got it back and I'm so happy with it. This place moved in a few years ago and painted a perfectly pleasant wall, which had been that way for over a decade, with a terrible attempt at mural work. On top of the poor artistry, they failed to lay something down to prevent drips of paint from hitting the cement, UNREAL. Mittel's is a GREAT store. It has literally everything you need for art supplies including really great sales recently on canvas -- I highly recommend you stop in and check it out. The staff are a husband and wife team, and they are so helpful and nice. I had no idea what I was looking for when I went in there and they totally helped me out, found me some good deals and told me what was worth buying and what wasn't really necessary for what I wanted to accomplish. I used to buy my "art supplies" at Target. Not anymore. I'd rather spend my hard earned money on a family-owned shop so I will definitely be back. I came here based on the positive reviews and my desire to support an independent art store. What a mistake. I needed a temporary frame for an expensive piece of fine art. They helped me select an existing frame to save costs and was assured that it would be professionally framed until I could upgrade to a better frame. Imagine my surprise when I went to pick up the work only to find that they had trimmed edges. Eh, ok. BUT THEY HAD CUT OFF THE ARTISTS SIGNATURE. In art-world speak... they took a $2,500 work of art from a prominent artist and made it worth $10 and impossible to verify authenticity. Near tears, the owner was indignant that "this was what you wanted." WHY would I want to cut off the signature??!!? Does no one at Mittel's employ common sense??!!? After an annoying back and forth, they let me 'call it even' and not pay the rest of my bill. Chump change, given that I've lost $2,500. Yes, the staff is nice and that's why I gave them my business. But nice doesn't equal competent and I wouldn't suggest anyone frame anything there. read more

I think I've been to every art supply store in town due to my days in architecture school. This is by far is my favorite. I love this one because it's right down the street from me and every time I walk in they immediately ask if I need help. And they genuinely want to help rather than just being told that they have to by their boss. I've been spending a ton of time in art stores over the last year and a half, and I'm so happy to have Mittel's as my local spot. Sure, I have to make the trek to Blick from time to time for bigger supply lists, but Mittel has most of the essentials and it is nice to shop at this indy store. The inside is not large, but it is well laid out and the staff is friendly and helpful. In the event that merchandise is not "on sale" (it seems everything I buy is on purported sale), they'll give a student discount of, I think, 30% (it could be 20%). Mittel's is a great alternative for Venice, Marina and Santa Monica folks who don't want to battle the West LA traffic for the bigger stores. This quarter I feel like I've just about bought them out of W&S gouache, but today is my last day of color methodologies, so hopefully no more emergency gouache purchases from me for a while! read more

A fellow artist recommended that I go to Mittel's to pick up some supplies that I needed for my photography. First off, there was some random homeless guy in the parking lot that wouldn't move for me (it was the last parking space). I know that's not their fault necessarily, but it immediately put a bad taste in my mouth. Inside, this place looks just like any other mom & pop art supply store. I was able to find a few of the things I needed, but I noticed that their inventory was REALLY low on everything. You would think that a art supply/framing store would at the least have picture hanging hooks. Another thing that irked me was the guy that works there. He was REALLY slow. I actually thought to myself that this dude must be baked off of his ass. His eyes were red and glazed, and he just seemed out of it. There was a really hot girl that worked there, and she definitely was with it. She seemed very friendly, knowledgable, and willing to help find exactly what the customer needs. I'm with Jill....straight up art supplies, knowledgeable and helpful staff, fairly solid prices, good parking. Definitely not an Art Snob vibe in the house. I'm biased because it's walking distance from my house, which is extra awesome. It's also one of the few places I can buy razor blades for art projects without the third degree. I have to admit I'm also biased because for many years one of the staffers used to bag my razor blades up in a paper sack and draw a little picture on it for me. I still keep all of my new blades in the little piggie paper sack. The last time I went in I mentioned that story and all of the folks at the counter smiled and said "oh that's so and so, isn't that sweet? Walked in planning to buy several paint brushes. Guy behind the counter was complaining to a visitor about how bad business was, how hard it is to stay open, etc... He did not ONCE acknowledge me or ask if I needed any help (I was the only customer, on a Saturday.) I took a couple to the register to ask the price. Stood there waiting for help. Guy completely ignored me while he chatted away about how bad business is. I finally had to ask if I could pay. Want to know how to improve business? 1) SAY HELLO; 2) Put prices on your merchandise. I would have bought more if there was a price list or tag; 3) Ask if you can help find anything or give advice. How hard is that? Gave this 2 stars because the prices are OK and there is parking, otherwise would have given no stars, if possible. Next time I'll go to Utrecht. read more
