This is a mainly online store capitalizing on youtube videos about Kobaien Ink. They are selling ink that is not authentic Kobaien ink, as the real stuff takes YEARS to make and costs thousands of dollars. Please do not fall for these scammers. If you click on the bottom of their webpage, on "Returns and Refund Policy", the first sentence reads "No Refunds, Exchanges or Returns." They then skip a line, then try to trick customers into thinking the policy is only about the paper. This is NOT the case. If you attempt to return for a refund you are directed to the first sentence and they will just hang up if you dispute it. Again folks, Kobaien ink is sometimes damned near priceless (depending on the oil used-grapeseed is common but some oils fetch 4-5x price per bar with higher end ink) and is priceless bc of the painstaking, arduous nature of producing it and the years it takes to make. read more

I came here looking for an assortment of paper for a collage project and was very pleased with the variety they offer. Lots of sophisticated paper in a variety of colors, designs, and textures. They also sell a collage bag/bundle filled with mini sheets for collaging and scrapbooking. I wanted a textured sheet of paper with Asian writing and was leaning toward a hanging sheet. However, I was told that since I was doing a collage project, I should get the collage bag and was reassured that all bags came with a sheet that has Asian writing. This seemed like the perfect option for my project so I went with it. Unfortunately, when I got home and sorted through all the scrap papers, not one had Asian writing so I was pretty disappointed. The workers here are super helpful! Every trip I take to California I scout for washi paper for my mother for the crafts that she makes and sells at craft fairs so it's really helpful to FaceTime her when I go shopping to double check with her before I purchase certain prints. Wow, just wow. I came in here just as a normal civilian, as I'm no artist. Was just looking for paper to make a card for my fiancé, and I know I couldn't have found a better place. The papers here are amazing, and there's no way to explain them; you just need to see the store in person. The customer service here also made my experience. They were patient and concise, not overbearing, and charming. They said they may be the largest US distributor of Japanese paper. Hiromi Paper is a diamond of a high-end paper shop in Culver City. It's not for bargain hunters; it's for people who appreciate luxe, hand-made papers. It's a small shop, but it's the only place in town with a wide selection of specialty Japanese papers (as well as paper from other countries). As a bookbinder I appreciate their selection of Cave papers (they don't carry cover weight or extended sizes though) and various Japanese tissue-weight papers. I was googling an "art store near me" and came across this store. Right smack in the middle of Culver City on Jefferson Blvd. Parking behind the store or across the street on Jefferson. I had never heard of the store and loved looking around. This is not your "typical art supplies store," this is -as it says on the sign a store selling paper. The photographs I took won't even do justice to the amount and variety of paper. It's a very specialized store, I saw books on book binding, so I can imagine should you need paper for something special: this is the place to go. I needed paper for my art journal, this kind of -although beautiful- paper was a bit of out my budget at $8 per sheet. However, if I ever need something extraordinary I will know where to go! read more

Located in Bergamot Station, this cute little Japanese paper store is definitely a hidden gem. I wish it wasn't so far from me! I walked in the store a bit underwhelmed because of how small it was. But if you keep looking, there's actually a lot of things that are sold there. They have a nice selection of papers. Different types of wooden paper too! I would have bought some if I had a purpose for them. They also sell book cloth (which is the main reason why I went there). It's not on display so you have to look through their sample books in the back and they get it for you. They sell it by 1/4, 1/2, and a yard. They sell bookbinding materials as well. If you are looking for unique, specialty, high-quality paper come here! There were two dogs in there when I went. One of them was named Pollock. So cute! I'm going back next week! read more

Where is this place??? Seemingly in the abandoned part of Santa Monica (yes, there are parts that are sketchy), I found Hiromi after wandering around an industrial area. Walking in, I immediately felt the cool and serene vibe. Viewing the pretty papers, thoughts of making lanterns danced in my head. Unfortunately, they're quite expensive. Some of the sheets I've seen here cost less at a Japanese notions store in other parts of town. But the excitement of seeing it all together caused me to lovingly caress the sheets and think I could afford the extra buck or two to retrieve what should be mine. Ah, paper. strangely this is at the bergamot station. i went in, and there were many beautiful, pretty washi paper, as well as paper with prints basically for wrapping paper, different kinds of nice paper you can use for your resume (ink jet ready) but were way too pricey for me, but the most cool find were the sheets of bark paper that you can print on! there was cherry, there was oak, maple... and there were two kinds of papyrus too. it was interesting! if only i had ample money to spend on paper! read more

Complete and varied selection of Japanese paper and paper making supplies I've seen yet. They have thick, thin, decorative, handmade, processed, colored, white, natural, you name it in Japanese paper. They have rolls you can buy too. I was on paper overload (kinda like looking at a menu at the Cheesecake factory) and couldn't decide what to get for my art work so I bought the paper samples books for sheets and the one for paper rolls. This way, I can decide at home and order online! Apparently, they have workshops too. ________________ Update 2/28/08 So I order paper several rolls of paper and the second worst storm of 2008 rolls in with copious amounts of rain (what is this, Portland??) drenching the bay area. My rolls come, packed in cardboard, bubble wrap, and plastic with the outside all taped up to protect it from the wet. These guys are awesome. read more

I was in search for what proved to be a RARE type of Asian paper. I had a sample from the 1980s I was trying to match. I sent emails out to at least 10 different suppliers in search for this paper. Hiromi was the first to come up because of their specialization in Asian papers. And even all the other suppliers recommended Hiromi when they could not identify the paper but knew they did not have it in stock. Edwin at Hiromi got back to me immediately and had ideas of what type of paper it was and offered to take a look and match it if I mailed it out. Once he received the sample he was able to match it to a rare paper that was no longer in production in that gsm. But he had a sample of it in a thinner gsm and he sent it to me and it was indeed the same paper - same sheen and texture just not the right weight. But he helped me procure the paper and directed me to a vendor who was able to laminate it so it would become the weight I needed. He was so helpful. You can truly tell they take pride and passion in their line of work. So privileged to get to learn more about the Asian paper and work with them! Thank you! read more

first of all, check the address before you go -- they have moved to the current Culver City address you see above, on Jefferson/Duquesne. the building looks distinctive in the photos, but be aware that it is off the main street. however, look for the little red sandwich board sign that says "Hiromi Paper." there is ample parking off-street in the back. the selection of papers is more than just traditionally made Japanese washi -- there are also beautiful sheets from Italy, Germany, and Nepal to name a few. they also carry sumi ink as well as archival paper supplies, handcrafted journals and intricate greeting cards. make sure to grab an adorable paper animal balloon for the kid (or kid at heart)! the staff is super friendly and patient, and if you don't see what you need, they can either source it or find it in the back. prices are fair and it's definitely cheaper buying here at the source than going to specialty shops with markup! check this lovely showroom out, especially if you do paper craft and need full uncut sheets -- fantastic resource! read more
