I visited the food truck yesterday during a AAU track meet. The service was good, and my food items tasted great! I ordered the mix n special with funnel fries and chicken tenders. They ran out of the lemonade drinks, so instead they created a concoction with their mango icee and made it into a cold drink for me. I was super appreciative, and it was the refreshing drink I needed as I was out in the heat all afternoon. Let me start by saying I'm a cupcake snob lol. I was craving Sprinkles Cupcakes but didn't feel like driving into DC for a cupcake. So I found this spot on Yelp and decided to give it a try. Very nice spot with friendly staff. I love that it is Black owned. I actually tried three (don't judge me lol): strawberry, caramel, and peach cobbler. I agree with other Yelpers that the cupcake tasted like box cake, but it was still very moist and delicious. The icing was amazing and hit the spot. That peach cobbler cupcake was something amazing!!! Definitely my favorite. My second favorite was the strawberry. I probably wouldn't get the caramel cupcake again. I love cupcakes...let's make that known. I was excited to try this relatively new cupcake shop in my area. There was a decent amount of options and I was greeted by friendly staff. The display case had stale looking cupcakes and handwritten signage that gave me some pause. However since I was there, I ordered the vanilla cupcake and the pineapple upside down cupcake. The cupcakes are retrieved from the back and handed to the customer in a sealed paper bag. The vanilla cupcake was ok--the actual cake was light and airy and delish but the frosting was too sweet and just meh. I have yet to taste the pineapple. While strolling on social media I came across a post saying there's a new bakery in town. So I decided to give mix n sweetz bakery a try and I must say I wasn't disappointed at all. The only issue but not really an issue was the wait for my items. We ordered four cupcakes and they were made fresh however 10 minutes turned into 30 minutes but I won't complain. I tried this place twice before I made this review because I wanted to give it another chance. I was disappointed both times. I'm giving this an extra star because the sweet potato cupcake is delicious. However, it's only offered on weekends. Cupcakes They're not good. The cake part tastes like it's straight from the box. For the price, I expected a lot more. I also noticed that a lot of the cupcakes have the same vanilla cake and the minimal flavor comes from the frosting. It just feels very expensive for what you're getting. The prices also aren't listed so you can't tell which cupcakes are the premium ones and which ones aren't. There also isn't a way to see which ones are available because most of the cupcakes are always on display. Service Maybe she was having a bad day but the woman behind the counter was very off-putting to me and the other customers when I went. She also wasn't wearing a mask the entire time I was there, which I didn't appreciate. The customers are required to wear one and for our safety, I'd like it if the staff did too. There seems to be a display case of one of each of what they are selling instead of a bunch of cupcakes being in the case... I don't know. This puzzled me but I was still curious. The temperature gauge at the entryway is a nice and safe touch. The staff changed their gloves after each customer. I appreciated those things. However, cakes should be made from scratch. Today (27 Nov 2021) I attempted to order a cake for Saturday (4 Dec 2021) and was told there was an "inconvience fee." What? You actually call it an inconvience fee? They need 2 week notice for cake order. Anything less than 2 weeks is an "inconvience." WOW! Needless to say, I took my business elsewhere. I was cool with the price but to tell a customer you're changing an inconvience fee speaks volumes. Maybe, you should call it a "short notice fee" just a suggestion. Anyway...... Let's start here...for those of you that commented about Mix N Sweetz preparing your cupcakes in the back...you have not visited any of the larger cupcake business such as Sprinkles in Georgetown NW Washington DC. Sprinkles takes your order and they take it to the back to prepare and pack your order. I have yet to experience the staff being rude. I have been 3 times and each time I am greeted with professionalism. The staff was very nice and helped me with my purchase with no problems. Now for those of you that had a million questions to ask the staff, how many times do you go to the white establishments and place your order without asking a million and five questions...frequently, so give the same courtesy to your black owned small business establishments. Mix N Sweetz don't sweat it...I go through the same thing as a Nail Technician ugghhh. For the pricing....I get it as my mother use to bake. It is very costly to prepare a fresh desert for others to enjoy. The price is fair....check out some of the other bakeries in the area...a Slice of cake is $6 & up. These intricately designed sweets are not inexpensive to make. You must pay for the time, and ingredients so with that said if you don't want to pay her prices go back to buying your $4 Safeway slice and be happy. Finally, the taste....I am a sweet eater so I love my sweets to be sweets. I have truly enjoyed each cupcake and milkshake I've tried. I will add however, I would mix up the yellow cake flavors to make the name of the cupcake instead of the topping being the only inspiring piece. For example, Peach Cobbler and Pineapple Upside Down cupcakes....make the cake part to match the flavor...peach cake or pineapple cake. This is only a suggestion...do you beautiful lady, I'm still going to purchase. Lastly...The Wait Time. I suggest calling ahead if you have time constraints. I will definitely call my order in from now on. I was the only one inside and I waited a bit over 45 minutes for 2 milkshakes, 1 banana pudding that was already jarred and 1 cupcake...a total of 4 items. It was after 5pm and the door was locked because they close at 5. However they welcomed us in and allowed us to take our time deciding what we wanted. Then more people came to the door and another.
