The staff is accommodating and what they do comes from the heart. They went to work on putting together a fabulous gift assortment for my mother, who is at a nearby assisted living facility. No secret, times are weird right now, but the team at Mixed Bag pulled it all together for a desperate out-of-towner at Christmas. This was probably the most blatantly racist interaction I've ever had with a store clerk. When I came up to the register to check out, the elderly white woman behind the counter stopped to inspect all my items, going so far as to literally open up the SEALED packaging of the items I was buying. At first I wasn't really sure why she was doing that until she walked away from counter with my items, and started comparing the items I was buying to the other ones still on the shelf. When I asked if there was a problem she got all flustered and implied that she thought I'd been trying to steal. The only other customers were an elderly white couple, who of course had no issues with their transaction. It was honestly a really awful experience and I ended up telling her to cancel the transaction and left without buying anything. I wish I'd read the other reviews before going in because there seems to be a pattern of the white owners being racist and rude as hell to anyone that's not white. Which is extra funny considering their shop is literally in Sacramento. Like, how are you going to be racist when you decided to open up a shop in one of the most diverse cities in the country? Anyway, it was just a bunch of overpriced tacky knickknacks that you can get at pretty much any other store in midtown. Go ahead and skip this place. read more

It looks like a garden shop from the outside with it's green awning and knick-knacks. It's not. It's a shop crammed with stuff from floor to ceiling.. seasonal items, kitchen utensils, novelty items.. I found some pretty cool shit, some funny shit. There's a sign hanging from the ceiling to show you where the line is to pay but there's so much shit everywhere you miss it. It gets crowded too.. You got all the inventory then you add some people and you better just hope they don't have strong fragrances on. I like this place. I always can find something I like, and leave with a smile. Here are some of the items I have purchased from here (to give you somewhat a good idea what kind of a store this is): A beautiful notebook that I use to jot my ideas in. I got the same notebook in a different color for my sister to journal in. Beautiful, colorful coffee mugs: I bought one with a few cats on it very much reminding me of klimt paintings. I bought my ex mother in law an umbrella with van gough's starry night on it. She loves the umbrella. She loves it so much she hardly ever goes under the rain with it as she's scared that something might happen to it haha, so mostly she'll use it during sunny days to give herself some shade beautiful jewelry: guys, if you're looking for something unique, you'll find it here. There are mosaic jewlery here that are absolutely gorgeous. I can't even tell you how unique, and beautiful some of the pieces are. I went in with a question about an exchange and was so shocked by the initial attitude of the employee, I had to assume I was misreading his behavior. As I'm reading the other reviews, I'm afraid I mistakenly gave him the benefit of the doubt since he did seem to turn his behaviors around during our exchange but too little too late. If you go to this store, plan on spending some time here. It is jam-packed with lots of little things to read (large selection of greeting cards, magnets, sticky notes, memo pads, napkins), kitchen gadgets, toys and other collectibles Given the amount of shelves, especially glass, it's amazing that there is no dust to be found. This place is very neat and tidy. Now for the reason I have given only a 3-star review. Until yesterday, I had never been in the store (I've been there many, many times) when the staff was anything but friendly and helpful. Yesterday, there was a gentleman, stocking shelves, who made my friend and I feel like we had ruined his day by coming in to the store to buy Halloween items. He never moved to get out of our way when we were shopping in the aisle where the Halloween items were stocked. When one of the nice staff persons asked if she could help us find anything, and we all had to go back to the Halloween aisle, he was short with her, would not help to locate the items we were looking for, and did not move from where he was working. Another staff person came over to where the four of us were standing, and asked whether she should stay, or if she should leave for the day, the two decided to have the discussion in front of us, and instead of helping us. Reminder to retailers: When you have a customer in your store, you have nothing more important to do than to take care of them. A $10 minimum purchase for a credit card in a gift shop is just daft. This really isn't rocket science, guys. Just charge enough money for things to be able to make your profit even accounting for the transaction cost from Visa/MC. . . It's perfectly legal to give a cash purchase discount. Just do it that way. Or you can do it like bars do it and charge the minimum purchase amount but give store credit for the difference instead of turning people away who aren't carrying cash. The worst thing you can do to a customer is waste their time by letting them walk around picking out small items only to scoff at them and show them the door when it only comes to $9.99 -- I can assure you that that time was worth more than your piddly little transaction fee. To those who think it's against Visa/MC's rules to have a minimum purchase for card use: it used to be, but a "financial reform" law passed not too long ago set that minimum at $10, overriding the card issuers' rules. Another example of how our government "protects consumers." So it's legal for low-IQ business owners to shoot themselves in the foot by alienating their customers now. Also a reason to ignore whiny, self-important small businesses and just buy things from Amazon.com. read more

The merchandise in this store is fun, interesting, and often unique. But in my half dozen visits to this place, I have yet to be treated in a friendly manner. The staff, quite honestly, is abrupt and rude. I was in the store this past summer when a customer came in and started browsing. She then saw the owner and told him, in a friendly and enthusiastic tone, that she had seen him walking by her house several times. My sister and I couldn't believe his response! He was not only short with her, but treated this nice woman like she was some kind of stalker. On a recent (and I think, unfortunately, my LAST) visit, my mother and I spent at least 40 minutes browsing and picking out small gifts, cards, and other items. When we went to pay, the clerk not only refused my debit card, she said they "only accept cash" and treated my confusion with contempt. Had I been hostile, I could understand her reaction, but this was ridiculous! The vast majority of businesses accept debit and credit cards... no doubt these people have gotten into it with their bank and don't want to pay for this service. The worst part, I think, was the fact that the owner was standing nearby and never even looked up when she treated me like a criminal for handing her my debit card. I prefer to frequent locally-owned small businesses. It is a shame when such businesses appear not to value the customers who keep them going. read more

In the late-1970's when Mixed Bag opened for business I was an instant customer. Over the years I shopped there a lot, following them through a few moves. For some reason I kind of stopped going to Mixed Bag a few years ago and have tended to shop instead at another two of my old faves, The Garden of Enchantment and Evangeline's (both in Old Sac). Yesterday, when I needed a few party favours for a birthday gathering I decided to drop into Mixed Bag. A dependable shop, Mixed Bag still has the gifty items, kitchen gadgets, holiday themed fun stuff, children's items, fancy soaps, greeting cards, and so on. Prices are somewhat steep, but some less-expensive items can be found if you dig. The candle and votive selection is quite nice, and that department is where I was focusing my attention when *BLAM!!!*- the owner, Susan, came from a back room and proceeded to tear into/berate/VERBALLY ABUSE (did I mention BERATE? Chide? Viciously ATTACK?) an employee, a quiet older lady who seemed understandably shaken up by Susan's tirade. Oh, is there anything that makes a shopping experience worse than being subjected to listening to the owner of the biz verbally beat the crap out of an employee? And Susan just went on. And ON. THIS was done wrong! And THAT is a mess! And WHAT ON EARTH were you thinking, EMPLOYEE, when you did THAT?!!! I was determined to complete the task I went to Mixed Bag for, and I did, but YIKES the ENTIRE time I was there i had to listen to the boss crashing and bashing her employee. It made for a MISERABLE shopping experience and sadly I have said bye-bye to a well-liked, long-time Sactown business. Next time Garden of Enchantment and Evangeline's will get my business. My advice to Susan? Hun, take one of the "Chill Pills" you sell in your store. read more

Horribly rude employees. Nothing you can't find somewhere else. This place was recommended to me by a friend, so I was hopefully this was a great place to find the items I was looking for. I found them, but almost didn't buy anything because I was so uncomfortable with the employees interactions. Two older women sitting behind the counter chatting, specifically complaining about hours, woman #1 snaps back at the other " you are so rude, you cut me off and I was talking, you are so rude" a customer comments as he walks by "almost as rude as you scolding an employee in front of all your customers." The grouchy old woman has the nerve to snaps back at him with a snide remark. I agreed with the male customer and said 'yes, and makes your customers very uncomfortable.' Woman #2 apologizes saying "you're right I do that sometimes, I need to be better about that." Sounds like its not the first time the bully (grouchy woman #1) has picked on her. At that moment I almost left the store, but I had found the items I had been looking for and already had them on the counter. I walked around for another 10 min. contemplating if I should leave or just buy the stuff, but I couldn't help but feel like the old cranky woman was giving me dirty looks. I go to be rung up and the man who rings me up is nice. Until I tell him "oh sorry, I don't think I need the bag, I'll leave that with you." Rather than saying OK, no problem or save a bag or something to that effect, he snatches the bag off the counter and gives a huff. I should have just took the darn bag. I just spent $15 as a first time customer in your shop and I'm leaving feeling like I pissed you off for not taking the stupid plastic bag. I will not be shopping here again. read more

There's a beauty section, kitchen section, kid's area, crafts, décor, and way too many things to name. Mixed bag is a perfect name for this store and no matter what your interests, there is something for everyone. Perfect place to shop for one-of-a-kind gift items. The owner of this store is extremely rude, and has no concept of customer service. I arrived 10 minutes before opening on Christmas eve 2011 to buy several kaleidoscopes for some children in SriLanka who have no toys. I was trying to get them to a friend who was flying to SriLanka in the next hour. The door to the store was open, and when I entered the owner was beyond rude. I tried to explain my situation and she immediately cut me off. I do understand that the store was not open, but why the need to be impolite and discourteous to potential customers? I waited the 10 minutes and then reentered the store to buy the toys (only because there was no time to go elsewhere). Needless to say, I will not return. Mixed Bag is a store that I have shopped in for years to get that unique gift for friends or family and have always enjoyed my time in the store. Until I had kids!! My family and I were in the store looking for a gift for grandma, when out of the blue the owner comes up and starts telling us to watch our kids better and how kids are known to break stuff etc... She made my 6 year old daughter cry over being a kid and looking at all the neat stuff in the store. Mixed bag gets my vote for being a non-kid friendly store. I had to come back and edit my review. A keychain that I bought from here broke all of two days after I bought it and I hadn't even put it on my keys yet!! The customer service isn't so great. There's a $10 minimum on Visa charges, a $.50 surcharge for debit transactions and the machine was down so I was told to drive to an ATM to get cash and come back, yeah right! As a man in my mid 30's, it is kind of hard to describe this place to my peers. I would say something to the effect of "knick macs, candles, weird toys, cards, and socks...ya know' chic stuff." (It looks like they had a bunch of stuff for babies too) After purchasing lots of my Christmas gifts here as well as some vital kitchen equipment, I am confident with my 5 star review. I got a kick-ass cooking thermometer here as well as a oil burning thingy to make my house smell nice. I went in there with $60 2 days before Xmas and walked out with gifts for 4 women! This is my go to place when I need to get a gift for someone I like. (Meaning people I think are just ok, get gift cards) Mixed Bag has so many cute little things that I go crazy and each gift is a plethora of things. I recently purchased a really nice smelling Olive Leaf lotion, a neat little pill box and compact mirror. Voila, gift done! I have introduced my mother, godmother and grand mother and countless friends to Mixed Bag and they all agree this place is awesome! Came in today for their much advertised "Christmas in July Sale" and left horribly disappointed. They had 3 tables of bland Christmas decor outside and a bunch of severely over priced, non-holiday items inside. They charge $19 for the same small cookbook that I've seen elsewhere for $12. Also for $12? A tiny seafood fork. $4 each for mini sauce cups. $7 mini candles... The list goes on. All were things that you'd find elsewhere for at least a couple bucks cheaper too. Even though they had several sales ladies chasing us through the store remarking about how empty our baskets were, I will say that it's a great shop for Christmas decor during the holidays. Mixed Bag is like a tiny version of Evangeline's. And for that, I can give them four stars. However, I'm taking off a mere one star for the fact that this shop is extremely crowded, and that the cashier was berating everyone in the store. I'm only deducting one because I really enjoyed browsing, and the different things I found. But damn, that cashier really needed to chill out. The line for checkout in Mixed Bag is unfortunately one of the aisles. So, my husband and I are trying to browse down the aisle and cashier man is yelling at everyone that the line starts down that aisle, and if you want to buy anything, you need to be in that line. So, a few people come flooding down the aisle where I'm trying to shop, effectively pushing me out of the aisle. Wtf. Considering I had just been to Evangeline's, I didn't see anything that I couldn't get there. So I ended up empty handed which almost never happens when I go shopping. I'll probably go to Mixed Bag again if I'm in the area shopping at Prevue's or something, but there is nothing I can't get in the bigger, more spacious Evangeline's. Plus Evangeline's has like 10 times the stock of Mixed Bag. But still, a cute shop - and right by Prevue's, one of my other favorite places downtown. read more

But then Willy Wonka tells them later that they can't touch anything, try anything, play with anything....and they do because well, they cant resist? That's pretty much how I felt walking into the Mixed Bag. I had a whole bunch of.... "mixed feelings", if you will. I was in awe. I was overwhelmed. And then suddenly.....
