This little store is deceiving! Because it's so tidy and well-organized, when you first walk in you'll think there's not much there. But as you make your way through you'll start finding goody after goody after goody. Kitchenware, décor, industrial elements, ephemera, jewelry, linens, repurposed items, fashion accessories, small furnishings, toys...you name it! I was so sure it was going to be a quick in-and-out that I didn't even put money in the parking meter. I ended up staying much longer than I expected and finding close to a dozen things I really, really wanted, all of them at very reasonable prices. In the end I settled on two items: a lidded piece from a Pyrex refrigerator set (in a rare color) and a ball bearing clip (so much more interesting for my chip bag than a binder clip). I saw lots of gift-worthy selections so I will most certainly be back. Especially since those gifts will be for yours truly. What? read more

Sharon was kind enough to show me around the store in hopes of finding a fun table/credenza for my front porch. We settled on a funky 1900s flour storage shelf... I guess it originally would have been used in someone's kitchen? So cool! Mixed Pickles has all kinds of weird and useful treasures - furniture, jewelry, and even high quality Eau de Parfums! This is my new favorite place. It's bright and colorful, and smells good, and is completely un-claustrophobic, unlike many other antique shops. It's overflowing with fun and unique things to look at and buy at reasonable prices. Great selection of hats (i saw an awesome 40s retro hat from Saks Fifth Avenue with a feather and gorgeous brooch under netting), hip glass buttons, dresses, furniture, all manner of chic antiques really. I saw many things that I would consider buying as gifts. They also stock new things like boxed stationary and soap. read more

I have to admit, I have a thing for "shabby chic" and all things vintage. I go here to browse, buy gifts, and treat myself. I always find something. Love love love this place and have for many years. Half the furniture in my little apartment is from here and it all makes me so happy. From my little orange French table to my fifties formica topped cabinet that I use to hold booze. I've bought cute cowboy table cloths, mini red handled kitchen utensils and countless gifts. The prices are reasonable for used "vintage" furniture--not antique really. The sales women have always been lovely to me and are willing to hold items and make great suggestions. What a cute name for a cute store! Tucked away somewhere between downtown and north Berkeley on Shattuck Avenue is a small antique store called Mixed Pickles. What caught my eye is the selection of woman's vintage clothes hanging outside on display. Most of the clothes are from the '40-60 and in more or less good condition but you do have to have a careful eye as some are labeled "as is". I purchased a beautiful mint condition French made vintage cocktail dress for well under $100. I was psyched when I realized it fitted me perfectly. This is a time when clothing makers made clothing to flatter Marilyn Monroe and Eartha Kitt body types. The store also have a mixed selection of furniture, kitchenware, pictures, jewelry, nick knacks, toys, China and anything else you can think of. The prices overall are near reasonable and the woman who works there on most days is very polite and as unpretentious as you can get, which is a breath of fresh air. read more

Can't remember the owner's name but he is a great guy and his shop while not "high end" (like I can afford high end) has a great selection of fairly priced eclectic items. I found some great pieces for my garden and house alike. Definitely worth checking out and he will hold items for later pick up (last time there I was on my bicycle). Two thumbs up. read more

I am a huge fan of this shop. I recently re-discovered it and have been going in on a regular basis. I'm kind of addicted to shopping here. One of the reasons that I like this shop is because I never get bored shopping here. For example, I took about a month long break and came into buy a candle. Not only did they have a wide variety of candles to choose from, they actually had new vendors selling high-end scented candles for such a reasonable price; I bought three. I am also crazy about their selection of women's vintage clothes. They have a rack outside and inside. Inevitably, I will find something in my size that is affordable. This was such a serendipitous find! Not only is it amazingly curated with only the most interesting and random things, but the owner is delightful and there is VINTAGE CLOTHING. Being the vintage addict that I am, I raided the racks, then found out they have a hidden stash of incredible Victorian-era clothing. I found one of my favorite dresses of all time - a black Victorian gown with amazing pleated sleeves, black gothic lace fabric, and an amazing train. The best part? It fits perfectly (with a corset - but hey, it still counts)! Aside from the incredible clothing collection, there is something to see in every corner of the shop. Definitely worth a stop in, but be warned you may walk out blowing a budget you never even had. read more

I found this place about a year ago and thought they had really great stuff with fair prices. Something has happened in the last 2-3 months though. I'm not sure if one of the owners is as active buying as before because everytime I go in there's very little new. Also the prices have gone way up, while quality has declined. I hope they read this review because I love the neighborhood, have made lots of purchases in the past and it seems the new store (2 doors down) called Horders has taken the new top rating. I recently moved to a new apartment within two blocks of this little store, and happened upon it while riding my bike to run some quick errands. I love little hodge-podge antique shops, and with it's cheeky name and beautifully designed window displays I couldn't help but take a peek inside. Man, is this store is a little treasure trove! There are so many quality, fairly-priced, vintage items I think I must have spent close to 45 minutes leafing through posters and prints, picking and choosing among their $2 vintage magnets (a very fun/kitschy collection,) and trying on items from their rack of vintage woman's clothing. A cross between antiques store and a boutique. Mixed pickles has tons of character and charm, the most charming out of the row of shops on the block. A perfect mixture of hand-crafted items like notebooks, magnets, jewelry....and selected vintage finds ranging from furniture to peculiar costumes from 100 years ago. You really have to praise a place that is a complete joy to peruse even if you don't buy anything, but, usually I can't resist. read more

I went into this shop with my wife because she suddenly decided she was fascinated by antiquarian dentistry technology/paraphernalia. Having no idea how to go about finding such items, we wondered into our local antique shop Mixed Pickles, at least to ask for a place we could try looking, assuming they would have nothing to speak of. We asked the young man behind the desk who greeted us with a friendly smile if he had anything related to teeth or dentistry (I was a bit embarrassed asking I admit). He gave us a big smile and said he indeed did, and brought us over to show us a jackpot beyond our wildest dreams. Long story short; We found some top notch stuff at this wonderful store, and not only related to dentistry, but also an old wooden chair that reminded my wife of her school furniture from the old days in Eastern Europe (how that got there I have no idea?). But in addition to all this wonderful business already described, we both enjoyed the conversation with this knowledgeable bearded gentleman on topics beyond dentistry; including such matters as old boxes, stereo moon photography, outsider art, and my growing interest in british ascot ties from the 1890s and turn of the century. highly recommended shop indeed. read more

What brings me back to Mixed Pickles again and again is the ever-changing mix of really great vintage items - from furniture to french linens. They have a nice selection of vintage jewelry, cards, clothing, furniture, linens, that is very reasonably priced. The store is arranged so beautifully is a pleasure just to browse, but I don't think I have ever left empty-handed. Staff is friendly, not pushy, so it's nice to drop in after a visit to Cafe Gratitude, or the Gourmet Ghetto in general. read more

This place is a super cute antique shop. I have always preferred dusty antique shops that you can get completely lost in, but for its size, this one is great. I adore this place and if I ever move out of Berkeley, this is the one place I will truly miss. So much character and cute vintage things.....I can spend a good amount of time in here wanting everything that I don't really need. I am not much of a shopper, but every time I stop in here, I seem to buy something. I love a lot of things about this place. There is a ton of stuff, but it's artfully arranged to showcase items; it's not just a random jumble of junk collecting dust. There seems to be a definite humor sensibility that comes through the selection or signage or juxtapositions. There is a range of price points: I can always leave with a few cool things that were under $30. There are always a lot of items priced to move, which is a good tactic, since it ensures turnover of inventory. Every time I go, I know I'm not going to be seeing the same tired stuff. I've always received friendly service. I first discovered the place when I was waiting to get copies at Cal Copy in North Berkeley, but since it's moved to Telegraph, it's only gotten better (and closer!) I really love the days when all the shops clustered on that strip have sales or have merchandise out on the sidewalk. read more
