Miyako Sushi has been around for a long time. If you're wondering where the locals eat, then go here. It is a take out only, cash only kind of place. No online ordering. Although, they do have a website. Show up early for first dibs at their fresh sushi (Cone, Maki and California). We liked their egg salad sandwiches, spam musubi with sushi rice, and Cone sushi. We showed up on a Saturday afternoon and there was a short line in the store to pick up sushi platters (order one day in advance) and food items. People even waited for the Maui hot dogs to be ready. The rest of the store consists of collectables, antiques, Pokemon, die cast cars, clothing, figurines, and Hawaiiana items. Worth checking out! Family owned business that has lasted through several generations. Just like several other local businesses on Maui, their flavor is subtly unique (balanced), and their presentation and service is good if you pay attention to their business hours (they open at 4am and close at 4:30pm on most days, but close early on Saturday... closed on Sunday and Monday) and order a little in advance for larger orders (like platters). Leaving a message on their business number works really well, so long it's at least a day in advance. Leave your name, number, and order along with your desired pick up time. They'll contact you if anything needs to be verified or they're unable to fill the order on time. I remember getting their Maki and Cone (Inari) sushi from Longs Drugs in the Maui Mall. Seems like outside places stopped carrying their sushi, but you can get it from their small shop in the Wailuku Industrial Area close to the Wailuku Post Office and Tamura's. Their sushi is well known and balanced flavors are preferred by many on the island. They're most known for the unique "Musunari", which is a version of Spam Musubi with inari rice instead of just regular rice. Very tasty, and almost everyone I shared it with on Oahu prefer it compared to any other version of Spam Musubi. You've probably seen their sushi and snacks in many stores across the island. I've been eating their sushi for years, but it was my first time stopping by their B&M location the other month. It's a bit of a unique store where it's half food outlet (on the right) and half antique and collectibles (on the left). The food is what draws in the locals for catering and events, but the store is a really a front for the owner's collection. He's been collecting things since the sixth grade (stamps, milk covers) and has expanded into anything and everything that piques his interest. As for me, I was in the area and decided to stop by for a quick bite to eat and snacks for my coworkers. They have hot dogs, musubi, cone sushi, etc. ready to grab and go on the counter. They also have a small selection of snacks like party mix, pretzels, sweet puffs, and more. I was really there for their inari musubi, which I had yet to try. It's not your standard spam musubi. Instead of regular, white rice, it's paired with inari rice for a combination of sweet and salty. Let me tell you, it is delicious! You really can't go wrong and they are the only place I've seen that does musubi this way. YUM! I've had their cone sushi, maki and california sushi, musubi and their manju and overall, it's good. Nothing fancy, but consistent and hasn't changed over the years. If you don't see the product out, just ask! I wanted more inari musubi's than they had out and the nice lady at the counter went in the back and grabbed more. Love supporting local! Growing up my fave was always the cone sushi but recently I discovered the Musunari and I'm a little upset it took so long for me to indulge in it. It's that good! I just go there for the yummy food. They do offer their food/snacks in other stores like Longs/CVS but not everything. This home location offers musubi, sushi, sandwiches, hot dogs (put your own toppings), salads, ice cream. All kinds of goodies! There's some fun antiques inside and outside of the store to check out. Went here originally for face mask that I saw on Instagram. They didn't have my team so that was okay. I still did little shopping in their cute store. We got a bag of chex mix which is super delicious. Cobj sushi and maki sushi. Plus the delicious hot dogs with everything on it. Best musubis on maui. The sushi rice musubi is always amazing. Love the desserts also.

These folks have a plethora of yummys for all taste buds! In addition to serving tasty snacks (check out their chex mix treats or cheese puffs), they also serve sushi! My favorite is their cone sushi with rice vinegar flavored rice tucked in a fried tofu cone. They also have excellent sushi rolls, spam musubi's and other local favorites. One thing that makes this place unique is they share a space with Mike's Antiques (opened Monday thru Friday) so while you munch on your snack, check out the antiques. From old bottles to statues of Darth Vader, the shop is fun to look at. But back to Miyako's, they're a great place with great food. I'll definitely be back! read more

Miyako Sushi is an interesting little shop, and it's name does not quite describe the place that it is. Most of the store's space is dedicated to selling antiques and knickknacks. A small counter at the entrance sells food and snacks. I assume the food is the main business while the antiques are more of a hobby since people are seen leaving with food more so than with antiques. The food menu is small, and the sushi menu is only maki rolls, inari sushi, spam musubi, and spam musunari. The snack menu consists of chi chi dango, butter cake mochi, manju, and some packaged snacks such as Chex Mix or boiled peanuts. I found Miyako Sushi during my quest for the best spam musubi in Maui. I heard about the spam musunari, which is a spam musubi with inari rice, and was determined to try it. My first visit was before closing time, but pretty much all the food had ran out. My second visit was earlier in the day, and I walked out with a spam musunari and some chi chi dango mochi. The spam musunari is so tasty. The sweet rice with the salty spam is an ingenious combination. The chi chi dango mochi is good as well, but the spam musunari is the star of the show. Come early before the food runs out. The store also does party trays of their menu items. Call in advance to order that. The food is very cheap, but bring cash as this is a cash-only business. My go to for spam musubi!! Growing up on the island I have grown extremely tired of ... S P A M lol especially when you stop at a gas station or the deli section and the musubis are a pound of rice and a 1in slab of spam and you can never tell if the rice is mushy or not! I hate thick cut spam that seems like it came straight out of the can and didn't see a stove. BUT I can always count on FRESH spam musubi a from here. They also have a version made with cone sushi rice that is delicious as well! The shop is sizable but filled with antiques for purchase. One day I'll actually browse the store because it seems like there are some really cool hidden gems here. As soon as you walk in there is a counter with a nice aunty standing behind ready to get your order filled. There's lots of 'homemade' snacks and their own version of snacks for purchase. I love the ranch dill pretzel twists! There's a small parking lot out from that is shared with about 3 other businesses but lots of free street parking as well. I decided to come here after reading my Yelp buddies - Jo Y., Vikéndios N., & Lovesto E. wonderful reviews. Sometimes checking out a local mom & pop store is pretty cool.........and in this case, I came here to investigate the sushi.........made here at Miyako Sushi. I don't know what I was thinking..........because for some reason I was thinking sushi, as well as maybe some other items you would find at a local okazuya (fish cake, noodles, fried chicken, tempura, & teri beef), but to my dismay............this place only sells sushi, mochi, monju, snacks, drinks and a few sandwiches. :( I must say, it's a very unique store.............kinda like a mix of a "local style 7-Eleven" with a mix of antique collectibles. If you go here.........you can pick up a few grab and go sushi items & snacks, and yet if you're looking for something unique, they do sell rare collectibles inside the store too! (Read Jo Y.'s review, & check out her pics!) I would say it's quite a trippy store indeed! As for the sushi.........taste pretty good.........but on the other hand, it is kinda on the pricey side........... Today, I purchased one spam musubi made with the sweet rice (the kind of rice they use for cone sushi), as well as a small tray of California Roll sushi, and a roll of Chi Chi Dango mochi....... All of this was just under $10 bucks. Not much food for your buck, but you must understand...........the food is all handmade. There is no place to sit inside to eat (like I said before.........it's grab & go)........so best bet to to find a little bench outside the private parking lot area, and you can share your meal with the wild chickens that creep up to you while your are eating. If you do choose to feed the wild chickens........not one or two chickens will come by.........I'm talking like a whole zoo of them! Chicks and all! A tiny update as a friend picked up some snacks for our holiday workday at the office... FOOD: Inari Spam Musubi - This version of the infamous Hawaii staple uses sushi rice instead of plain white rice, which is vinegary, a tad sweet, and has finely chopped carrots mixed in. Being a raw carrot hater, even I couldn't detect them. The strong flavor of the rice definitely overpowers the flavor of the Spam. Some may like it, but I'd never eat it again. Plain rice all the way! To be fair, the Spam was fried nice and crispy, and the nori wasn't soggy due to the musubi being wrapped in wax paper as opposed to plastic wrap. read more

Sushi and vintage collectibles in equal parts....what do they have in common? Hard to believe, but the popular Miyako Sushi in Wailuku Maui has them both. Only in Maui.... Established in 1980, Miyako Sushi is presently owned by Michael and Judy Kodama, with daughter Cindy to take over the reign once they retire, which will be the third generation of family members. It specializes in take-out of various kinds of sushi, food items, and snacks: * Maki sushi - 10 oz. roll of seasoned tuna with carrots and red or green ebi with optional egg. * California rolls - 10 oz. roll of imitation crab sticks with fresh, crisp lettuce and mayonnaise. One of the very few places that use fresh lettuce which gives it a nice crunch when you bite into it. * Cone sushi - also called inarizushi with fried tofu bits and carrot slices. * Teppo sushi - 4 oz. roll with takuan or cucumber. * Oshi sushi - large floral shaped sushi. * Musubi - plain rice or spam musubi made with regular rice or cone sushi rice. One of the very few places that use cone sushi rice for its spam musubi, which is an added bonus and may be called a "spam sushi." * Party mix - made in-house with corn/rice/wheat chex cereal, cheerios, bugles, pretzel sticks, honeycomb cereal, fritos with buttered seasoning. I usually see this mix around Christmas time, but here you can find it all year long. It's made just right, not too sweet nor salty, and is so addictive. * Snack packs - goldfish crackers, wheat thins, chocolate covered raisins. Cashews, potato chips, candy bars. * Sandwiches - hot dogs, ham and cheese, egg salad, tuna, turkey and cheese. * Miscellaneous - boiled peanuts, somen salad, tossed salad, tofu salad, hard boiled eggs, plain cooked rice, manju, butter mochi. The manju is so flaky and crispy; the butter mochi is delicious and is of a cake-like consistency, so it's not oily as the usual butter mochi. * Drinks - soda, coffee. coconut water, juices, energy drinks, iced coffee. Its specialty is their sushi, which are freshly made by hand during the wee morning hours of each day, with workers coming in to work as early as midnight before opening at 9am. The sushi is perfectly seasoned, somewhat sweet with not too much vinegar. They offer beautifully arranged sushi platters for parties which must be pre-ordered. Or you can purchase just one or two sushi rolls; although they may have some available, they sell out fast, so it's best to pre-order those also. (It is not uncommon for them to make 500 spam musubi in one day!) Pre-ordered sushi, even for only a couple of rolls, are packed carefully in a box with thick waxed paper so that the sushi does not dry out. While the general public may purchase sushi from Miyako directly, they wholesale to various supermakets, stores such as Longs Drugs, and restaurants. Did you know that even the famous Sam Sato's Restaurant sells cone sushi from Miyako Sushi, the only food item that they do not make themselves! Not only are there sushi and snacks, but Owner Michael Kodama has a showroom at the same location of hundreds of vintage items, including local Hawaiiana. Collectors may purchase authentic, one-of-a-kind items, thanks to Michael's many passionate years of his expertise in these items, which include: * Glass fishing floats * Kokeshi dolls * Golf clubs * Beer steins * Pewter items * Dishes, coffee mugs, glassware * Vases * Old bottles * Maneki-neko lucky cats * Toys - marbles, car models, bobbing head dolls. movie characters * Shells * Figurines * Carved tikis * Handmade dolls I was so awed by the display of these vintage items, as they were in tip-top shape and neatly arranged on the many shelves. Miyako Sushi was originally located on Lower Main Street and moved to its present location in the Wailuku Millyard on Wili Pa Loop, a block away from another iconic Maui eatery, Sam Sato's, in 1988. It expanded its current space in 2012 by taking over the space held by another business next door, which became the showroom for the many vintage items. Miyako Sushi is open Monday to Friday from 4am to 4:30pm, Saturday from 4am to 12:30pm, and closed on Sunday. Yes, they open at 4am with sushi all ready to go! The owner was very kind and informative; you can tell he has a passion for collecting. The owner even made me want to start collecting.
