    Bento special

Another amazing bento special! Somen salad, California roll, shrimp tempura, calamari katsu, spring roll, and sushi.

This is our first place we ate at when we landed and let me tell you it is authentically delicious it's quaint portions are very nice. The food is delicious. Service is very good for me. Never experiencing a Hawaiian environment before so I'm have to assume it was a positive experience ambience is kind of plain but you know it's a traditional Japanese Hawaiian restaurant Diet Coke didn't taste kind of flat it was a can that could be the fact I still have a bit of jet lag and maybe it was just not a fresh can but they have these really interesting bright multicolor, pink and orange or it's like a guava mango something else in a can and apparently popular cause they got lots of it there more than they have other things and there's cans in the recycling area so I'm gonna have to try that at some point. If we happen to be by that way again, I would definitely eat there again and the kimchi side of kimchi. It's simple straight up kimchi that's delicious without having that extra fancy muscle oyster crap that some people try to put up in their kimchi that should only be in there if you're curing it but not when you're serving it and this was very nice and a little bit of a kick, but it was delicious.

Food was great! If you dine in on the left side, it's a bit warm. We were only checking in on once by our waitress. She sat us down, took our order then came back at the end when we were done eating. We ordered the combo A, katsu don, soft shell sushi roll and a spicy tuna roll. Everything was great! Especially the salted cabbage as your side. We'll definitely be back.

My family has dined at this restaurant for YEARS! It was a full circle moment to be able to bring my kids here! The kids enjoyed the keiki bento, which included half a spam musubi, Saimin, beef teriyaki, chicken katsu and a snack/dessert. I indulged in the chicken katsu which featured a crispy coating on tender chicken, and sauce on the side. The mini ramen was also delicious l! My partner (a first timer to the restaurant) had the bento special which included pieces of sushi, sashimi, and yakitori chicken. Needless to say we left incredibly full and satisfied. Great prices, decent portions, and Japanese comfort foods make for a great time. I highly recommend supporting this local business, as they too support local (farmers, ranchers & bakers)! *They also do takeout!

Finally dined in Restaurant Matsu. Local spot for bentos, plate lunches, and sushi. Usually seems to be busy for dine in and take out. Expect wait times but food comes out delicious! We have gotten fried chicken, teriyaki salmon, unagi don, ramen broth, and sushi. They have more options to choose from the menu. Warm and inviting atmosphere!

A good comfort food spot, the food/service is decent, but not as great as I expected. The staff is very friendly, but I wish they could clean up and organize the place a little better.

Landed from the airport and went straight here for a ma and pa meal! The food was okay. I noticed that their rolls were mostly rice rather than protein and one of my rolls was just drenched in spicy mayo. I wouldn't recommend a sushi fix here, but the cooked food options are made with love! The bento special was pretty good for the price. The chicken curry katsu was very crunchy and I enjoyed the curry taste without all the extra seasoning and salt. Service is really friendly and sweet! Ambiance is very cozy. I notice a lot of locals come eat here and most of them order soups. Maybe I'll come back for a warm bowl of ramen :)

My GMAs favorite for Japanese food and now my favorite too! Staff was so kind and friendly. We ordered some sushi tonkatsu gyoza and more... it tastes so good!!!! Will always be coming back to this place! Only downside is be careful of the table. You will hit your knee when trying to get up from it.

I helped an elderly woman who was struggling with it. They gotta get the door springs loosened up The server brought us miso soup right after we sat down. That was a pleasant surprise. However, it was just the bowl of soup, not including the traditional cover with green onion on top. The soup was very good, not too strong and served at the proper temperature. The previous owners served it scalding hot. I could not eat it for several minutes unless I put some ice cubes in it. Also, no salted cabbage was served, unlike the past. I ordered the Teishoku A with teriyaki pork, sashimi, vegetable tempura and shrimp tempura. As my photo shows, it was well presented. The sashimi was very good quality with 3 thick slices. The teri pork was great. Not too salty, as was the case in the past. The pork was cut to a good thickness, not paper thin, and no gristle. Big scoop of rice. The veggie tempura was huge! The shrimp tempura was about the same size as in the past. The tempura batter was cooked perfectly. Crisp, light and no bad, old oil taste, as happened with the previous owner. It was very much hit or miss. You just hoped the day you went they used fresh oil. If not, yuck . The price was $25.99, I believe the least expensive of the Teishoku choices. My friend had the spare ribs. He said it was good and as the photo shows, it was a generous portion. Unfortunately, I forgot to take photos of the menu, but as I recall, most plate lunches run in the high teens to low 20's. The Teishoku trays start in the mid 20's and run up to the high 20's. I believe the ala carte entrees run from the high teens to high 20's. Overall, great service and the taste and quality of the food might be the best I've ever had there in the 40+ years I've patronized the restaurant.

Most known for their Teishoku (Set Meal) Trays that include Rice and Miso Soup. I got my favorite, Teishoku B which includes Teriyaki Steak, Shrimp & Vegetable Tempura, and a few slices of Ahi Sashimi. I wanted my steak Medium Well and it was perfectly done and the teriyaki sauce was a good balance of tangy and sweet. Pour a few drops of Shoyu on the Sashimi and dip it in the Hot Mustard sauce in the middle of the tray. The star of my tray is the Shrimp and Vegetable Tempura. They fillet the shrimp so it was a HUGE shrimp tempura piece along with strands of carrots in tempura batter, tempura asparagus and a tempura eggplant. It was so crispy and tasty. I've been to Japan and this is Japan level tempura and the best on Maui, hands down. I came around 1 pm and they close at 1:30 pm and I got my order in 5 minutes with maybe 4-5 parties seated around me. The aunties were attentive and helpful. Make sure to visit this hidden Japanese gem for lunch or dinner!

I really love katsu, so I got the Pork Katsu plate, which comes with a scoop of rice and your choice of side (I chose potato salad). I loved the crispiness of the pork katsu, it came nice and hot. The Japanese rice was carb heavy, just how I love it. The potato salad was good, although I typically crave a macaroni salad with my Hawaiian plated food. There was a huge line when I arrived, and I was afraid, very afraid. However, it was a bunch of people standing around who had already ordered (another sometimes bad sign). But, I actually ordered without any line, and those people quickly dissipated. My food probably came within 10 mins. In that 10 mins, we ate the poke first, then got our Ichiban order quickly after. The two restaurants are so close together by driving, that I would highly recommend pairing the two restaurants together, if you want to share food items, and try different Hawaiian things, without making an extra trek. Would definitely recommend it right after getting off the airplane too! I can't say it was worth driving here all the way from Kaanapali though, since there's nowhere to sit down. There's a parking lot right at the restaurant itself, and it's just to-go, but you are allowed to eat in the parking lot. So can't really say much about ambiance. The service was quick though, and credit card was allowed. Not bad.
