Wow! Wow! Wow! Umi Sushi absolutely exceeded my expectations! I can't believe I waited this long to try it. The Ahi Katsu was next level -- perfectly crisp on the outside, tender and flavorful inside. The combination of their house-made aioli, katsu sauce, and unagi sauce was to die for. Every bite had the perfect balance of texture and richness. I also loved the Agedashi Eggplant. I'm usually not a big fan of bonita flakes or that smoky flavor profile, but they executed it beautifully -- light, balanced, and not overpowering at all. Total winner. Over the past few years Umi transitioned from an older building across from Maui Bowling on Vineyard Street, to a refurbished Lower Main St location (the old Archie's) next to the venerated Tiffany's. This newer open-concept location has a tight 10 stall parking lot with overflow parking across the street. It upgraded their sushi bar into a 12 foot sleek concrete dining row with 9 barstools. The open air dining room has several tables that can be put together for parties of 8. When we dined there it was very busy. I spoke to our young server who almost seemed overwhelmed with tables. Although she did a great job juggling her guests. She recited specials of the night and we ordered a fair amount of dishes for our large party. Umi combines modern local dishes with Japanese flavors, sashimi and sushi rolls. Several dishes utilize the deep fat fryer for textures and depth. We had a good variety: Agedashi Eggplant very crispy and flavorful spices and a dashi sauce that kept its crispness. Calamari Salad and Calamari had crispy tendrils of squid legs with a sauce that tied it together. Panko Breaded Pork Belly served with a thick Katsu Sauce was decadent. Fried Nabeta was entirely edible and very crispy. Large bed of rice, puréed ginger, and a delicate dashi-soy sauce. Truffle Edamame and Sushi rolls were good. Tuna bolognese with spaghetti in a light tomato sauce. Oyster shooters had a good proportion of spiciness with a raw oyster. The special Modern Sushi brought 5 Goteburg Sausage Rolls, an inverted Musubi with salty fried sausage encasing rice. Many folks bring coolers of beer or wine to complement the food. I raved about this place to friends after visiting their original location nearby Four Sisters Bakery many years ago. The hamachi carpaccio was memorable, loved the presentation and flavors. Went back recently and learned of their new location. The atmosphere is trendy and minimalist, bathroom was also nice. The food was not what I remembered it to be. It was nice to see the addition of hot foods, we did thoroughly enjoy the Brussel sprouts and truffle fries, although the sauce on the fries felt a bit overkill. The soupless ramen was interesting, but too oily for our taste. Our friends enjoyed the tonkatsu ramen though. The hamachi roll was good but overpowered with the amount of sauce, could barely taste the hamachi. Was hoping the best of both worlds of sushi and hot foods but was not very satisfied. Our group came from Oahu and was looking for a spot to just chill & eat. This place conveniently took our big party in and we really appreciated it. Once seated we were served waters and the waitress briefly explain the menu. We were very excited to get our grind on. They appeared short staffed and people were rolling in and out, so I guess you can say they were pretty busy too. Once we got our food, everything was plated presentable and looked delicious. The oyster shooters were really good. A good size to shoot & it was unique because there were tomatoes and onions,so had a crunch to it lol. The spicy salmon was delicious, small portion but you can get full from it quickly. The spice was a perfect kick to me, just enough to taste the spicy, & I like how the cucumbers gave it the crunch. The two dishes that we did not enjoy much were the Brussels & Calamari. I'm sure it's delicious on most nights, but this night we came it was SALTY. Like extra loaded, burn the tongue kind. The dishes were barely touched because it was so salty we couldn't handle. We needed water after each bite. We told our server, so what he did was just take it away. We thought maybe he'd ask if we'd wanna replace it or take it off our bill since we barely touched it, but NOPE. We got charged! Fine if we ate it, but we needed plus we didn't even have it our table! After this experience we figured, damn $ hungry much? The chef or waiter didn't even say anything. Umi Sushi is easily one of my favorite sushi spots on Maui. The parking can be tight and the staff runs a small crew, so you might wait a bit between dishes but it's absolutely worth it. Every bite feels fresh and thoughtfully prepared. The team is warm, genuine, and clearly cares about what they serve. From the rolls to the sashimi, everything is on point. We were looking forward to the reopening of this restaurant in its new location in the old Archie's. It's located next to Tiffany's. The parking is limited and it's easier to get out if you reverse into the parking spaces. The space is nicely renovated! It has a bright, open, modern design. We arrived at 5:30 pm on a Thursday night with a party of 8 so there was no wait for a table. Everything on the menu is ala carte so you can mix and match depending on how hungry you are. One thing to note is that the food comes out sporadically so it's possible that not everyone in the party eats at the same time. But the food is so good, it's worth the wait! read more

It was the soft-shell crab bao that put this spot on my radar when they originally opened years ago. However, evenings in Wailuku were few and far between for us, so years went by and I never got a chance to try it out. Hoping for the next best thing when I have a food truck open during the day, I stopped by right out of the airport. Not sure if it was just that day or their offerings have been pared down, but they were only offering tacos instead of the plate lunches like the ahi katsu I had my heart set on. Determined, I made an effort to stop by the restaurant an hour before closing a few days later. The soft-shell crab bao were unfortunately sold out already, womp, womp, but we made the best of it with their sushi. Yes, it is pricey with the smaller rolls coming in close to $15 and the larger specialty ones close to $25. However, two was worth the price for me, the spicy tuna and the chicken skin roll. With how unique the chicken skin roll was topped with hamachi, tuna, and fried chicken skin, that won out for round 2 especially since it was filled with spicy tuna, giving me the best of both worlds. I give Umi Sushi 10000/10 and hope everyone reading this finds the time to dine here. I'd like to preface this review by saying I worked in a sushi restaurant for 6 years and sushi/japanese is my favorite cuisine.....but dang Umi just does everything right!!!!! We started the meal with a couple of oyster shooters that they make with Hawaiian Chili Pepper water. The oyster was huge & the Chili Pepper water had the perfect amount of spice to give it that kick at the end of the shot. We saved the tomato/onion mix that was left in our shot glass to put on other items because it was THAT good. The Tuna Carpaccio was delicious and the sauce complimented it so well. It didn't over the power fish but had a nice spice element to it. The tuna (ahi) was super soft too. We originally decided to dine in because we saw a photo of their weekend special- the creamy Cajun pasta with grilled tako- and it did not disappoint. Sauce was yummy & rich and the tako had a great charred flavor on the outside. The Garlic Tiger roll was as amazing as everything else. It looks like there's a ton of sauce on there but it was the PERFECT amount! It didn't make the rice soggy or drown the roll. The crunchy garlic really makes the roll sing! The size of the rolls were perfect bite-sized pieces. Not pictured was Ama Ebi Nigiri & Hamachi Nigiri. The Ama Ebi's fried shrimp heads were super crispy and we demolished them in seconds. The texture of the raw shrimp was JUST RIGHT because it wasn't too slimy as I've had in the past. Hands down best Ama Ebi I've ever had. The Hamachi was buttery soft and literally melted in your mouth like otoro. We finished the meal with a lilikoi vanilla soft serve and an apple lumpia type of dessert which was crispy and warm. It was the perfect ending to an already great meal. Our server and servers assistant were very attentive and friendly! They made sure we had everything we needed and periodically checked on us. She had great menu knowledge and was overall a delight. The food came out really fast too! The atmosphere is great in there. They played local reggae tunes which I personally enjoyed. The restaurant is intimate and the tables are close together but it's really not loud in there. I love the modern decor, the dishes, and all. Can't wait to go back! read more

We came to Umi on a Saturday night at about 7pm. We were able to find a parking space in the small parking lot fronting the restaurant. Theirs also plenty of parking in a dirt lot across the street. We had to wait about 10 minutes for a table as they do not take reservations. It's very clean and modern looking inside reminds me of a trendy place you would go in Oahu. This restaurant completely renovated and really nicely done. This restaurant is BYOB so we bought our Maui brewing co beer and I noticed a lot of people with wine bottles as well on the tables. This is such a plus! Our waitress greeted us maybe about 5 minutes or so later and brought us some menus then some waters and took our order shortly afterwards. They were short handed and very busy but I think they handled it well as we didn't wait too long for anything. 3 of us started off with da works oyster shooters the chilli pepper spice pairs perfectly with a cold beer. We ordered 3 sushi rolls that were all amazing! The Highlight for me was the Umi Roll with shoyu egg dipping sauce so delicious. We also ordered the hamachi carpaccio which was like a sashimi, the ginger ponzu topping on it was good. My 10 year old had the tonkatsu ramen and truffle fries. Came from oahu to visit family and walked into this establishment because our air bnb (uncle Tony) suggested it. If I could do 10 stars I would!! Food, service, ambience and authentic like REAL sushi from Japan. You can taste how clean and fresh the ingredients are from the fish to the sauces and even the toppings! Not overly flavourful and stuffy like most sushis in Hawaii. This is authentic with a clean local vibe. Service was great, they welcomed us knowing they close in an hour. Found out one of the workers is from kaimuki, good to run into other Local braddhas. Gotta try!!! read more

We were here on a Wednesday night, so there were lots of seating to sit and socially distance ourselves. I didn't expect to get fries at a sushi place as an appetizer, but I'm glad we did, because it was delicious. We got the truffle fries with the house sauce, it was incredible and we couldn't stop eating it. For sushi, we got the shiso dragon roll and the spicy tempura roll, we thought we were going to order more sushi, but the fries were so filling that we stopped after 2 sushi rolls. As for the ambiance, I love the dark walls and ceilings, it was a really chill place to be. The waitress was very nice and helpful on recommendations for food on the menu. Not much variety of foods in Maui but the handful are exquisite and original in its own way. Being from Oahu and getting to eat an endless experience of different food establishments I have to say that Umi sushi restaurant was a very unexpected and awesome experience for me and some friends. From the customer service to quality of food everything was spot on. The fried Nabeta with ponzu sauce on the side and creamy fine grated ginger with green onions on top just broke my mouth. I don't usually eat a lot of rice but the ponzu sauce with fish combo had me chase it until there was nothing left but a clean plate (try doing that with sauce covered rice using chopsticks). I've tasted many seafood shooters and Umi hands down is up with the best of them given I ordered only 2, I should've ordered 2 more....go big or go home in my opinion. Quality and taste of food after going home to sleep and wake up to no regrets is the experiences I always remember and pass on to others that are looking for good food. This is a family owned restaurant that has a good vibe and "everything is fresh!!!" This is a must try in my opinion hands down 5 stars so prove me wrong if you can. Finally made it here and glad I did. I avoided this spot primarily due to parking. The location doesn't offer too much parking options and I have anxiety about getting a parking ticket or towed. Came in on a Friday night around 730/8 and had great timing as people were leaving. You walk in and seat yourself at any open table. Service was quick as soon as we sat down and menus are via QR code. Since it was our first time we wanted to try a few things and they all made the cut. Definitely loved the Calamari Salad, Truffle Fries, and Garlic Tiger Roll. Note: the garlic chips on the Garlic Tiger Roll were a little chewy but not sure if it's supposed to be like that. I just imagined it would've been light and crispy garlic chips. They do offer weekly specials which look equally delicious. I appreciate that their online menu shows a picture of just about every item. Only bummer is their bento option that offers a little bit of everything for the perfect combo is only available for takeout. But on the plus side, they offer takeout! And then for me the caterpillar roll was inedible, I did not like the strange flavor - unlike any caterpillar roll I had ever had. I had to spit it out :/ and was 24$, I shouldve returned it and asked for something else, but my sister ate it. No wasabi or ginger on plate, I couldve asked but usually it comes with it. Super let down by this place based on the abundance of glowing reviews! 1. Bao buns were on the harder side, cold, and the crab was overcooked and tasted burnt. 2. Lechon in the roll tasted straight out of the refrigerator since it was hard and cold! The biggest let down out of everything. 3. Sushi roll was just okay, with fish on the thin side and too much rice. Not worth $25. 4. Oyster shooter was expensive for the size. I've had bigger oysters in other shooters for less in Hawai'i. The flavor pairing was nothing memorable, but it wasn't the worst. 5. Garlic pea sprouts blew me away! They were the only good food from the evening. It's a shame that a veggie dish was the standout instead of the sushi due to the restaurant being called Umi Sushi. The bathroom was absolutely horrifying and reminded me of a dirty dive bar. It does not match with the establishment in the slightest. There was a hole punched into the wall, tons of dust, and the soap was haphazardly on the counter but supposed to be a refill for a wall dispenser. Unsure why the restaurant couldn't be bothered to place it in the correct spot. I do not mind a dingy bathroom so long as it matches the vibe of the restaurant. The ambiance of Umi is better than the bathroom they provide. I did not purchase drinks or dessert but this still ended up being my most expensive meal over the weekend hosting a visiting friend. I shockingly spent far less on food at the resort hotel sector of East Maui. It's a shame, but I won't be recommending the sushi at Umi Sushi. Still the one for Ono, unique and perfectly plated sushi, ramen, and other nouveau JHawaiian dishes. You can never ever go wrong with their rolls, nigiri or specials of the day. Tried and true favorites include the Umi roll (hamachi topped to melt in your mouth); And the Lechon roll. That's for your friends that say "I don't like sushi but I like the cooked stuff and I'll eat seaweed/nori." This roll is centered around Lechon - a Filipino style roasted pork with a crunchy cracklin skin. They sauce this is paired with hits every note of umami. If you've never been to historic Wailuku, come in or order take out via the app. If you're lucky enough to have a server named Jandee - she is an amazing part of this Wailuku community and the Veteran community. A quick update as some things have changed. As of May 2019, an Instagram post of menu and hours of operation changes was announced. Ramen nights are dead. D-E-A-D dead. It's sushi 24/7. Yay for some, not for me as I love noodles, especially ramen/saimin. When we went in, I asked our server why that tragedy happened. He exclaimed because summer is coming and the ramen hasn't been selling because of the weather. I almost fell off my chair. If you love ramen, you eat it for the craving/taste, not in tune with the weather outside. But, I get it. Most of Maui's clientele are a finicky bunch, unlike stomachs in other cities of the world. And, they're now dark on Sunday's. DESSERT: Japanese Soufflé Cheesecake - $7.00 I usually wouldn't update a review for just a dessert item but there was not one review on here that mentioned it, so here you go! This was listed on their specials menu and if it's available, I suggest you get it. Long story short, it's a cheesecake-flavored soufflé. Spongy and airy with notes of what tasted like cream cheese. Portion size was about a 3" high small triangle. TIPS: I was ecstatic to see that the Mentaiko Pasta has been added to the regular menu as it's scrumptious!
