This place is pretty good. My only regret is going here few hours before I leave. The food was great. We had four different rolls and we couldn't decide which one is the best. The rolls my friend and I got were great -- can't go wrong with soft shell crab and a rainbow roll to try tuna, yellowfin, salmon, and more. Like all seafood places in Maui, the fish quality is emaculate. The price here was less justified in my opinion considering you get less fish for a higher price. I would recommend someone go get poke instead of rolls here if there was the chance to. The service was smooth and the owner kept checking up on my friend and I. Pretty grateful for the service. The ambiance was refreshing considering my friend and I got seated at the bar side and could see the fish slicing in action. The sushi was so good! My favorite was the salmon aburi roll. I think the pricing is pretty fair, but if you go during happy hour it's like 30% off or so, but definitely worth it! Our waiter was so friendly and funny when he was checking on us! Told us to try the tuna Kizami wasabi roll next time. We hope to get him again as our waiter too! I decided to case the joint to see why it was being talked about, tipping my hat down so I couldn't be recognized. The guy at the door was friendly, too friendly, why was he being so nice? Uneasy, I accepted the menu he was offering and decided to cross examine him. "You do to go" I asked suspiciously. "We sure do, have a menu" he answered, too quickly, too slick, too good, too friendly . I flicked my eyes around the room, watching the smiling customers enjoying sushi, the chef frozen smiling at me holding a knife, another nodded at me. I nodded back. I know that look. "Spicy Tuna, and make it fast" I told the still smiling guy at the front, watching the cook with the knife slicing through flesh with quick deft movements. I narrowed my eyes judging him. An expert, definitely suspect. I kicked my heels watching from a corner, trying to read the room, but all I got was happy customers, clean floors and great decor. There had to be something going on here. Something was off here but it wasn't the fresh fish. In less than 5 minutes the happy guy handed me a paper bag with sushi, napkins, condiments, even chopsticks...good, too good. Damn, I couldn't get a handle on this joint. No faults, apart from being too friendly. I paid and left with a sideways glance at the chef wielding the knife, he smiled at me as he sliced, not a man to meet in a dark alleyway I decided. Back in the safety of my getaway vehicle I chanced a bite of the spicy tuna, damn it was mouthwateringly good. 8 pieces, and so fresh. What were they up to? How did they do it? Who were they in league with? I decided on my second bite that I needed to case the joint again. This was going to be a long job, but someone had to do it. We have been to this restaurant before when we visited Maui and it has absolutely outstanding sushi. The restaurant has a very nice casual upbeat vibe. The service was excellent. Our waitress was very attentive and unlike many sushi restaurants where you wait for a long time to get your food, the food came out very quickly. In addition to nigiri and sashimi, which was very fresh, we had several specialty rolls, including the white dragon roll and the firecracker roll, both were exceptionally good. Also, we happened to be fortunate enough to be eating during happy hour so the prices are slightly less than regular menu prices which is always a plus. While prices are not inexpensive, it's totally worth the price. This is a must go to place for sushi in Maui and was worth the hour drive from where we were staying. read more

Party of 4 stopped for our last dinner on Maui this trip, based on recommendations we got from locals and visitors. Very fresh and delicious nigiri. Sushi we tried included the Crispy Dragon roll and firecracker roll. Both were delicious. We also tried Tuna maki and salmon ava (avocado). All were so tasty- firecracker roll was the table favorite! We also enjoyed the brown miso soup! Just a bit of kick to it and hit the spot. Our server was helpful explaining all the rolls and what they were like. He also recommended a good one to try after our first round. It's a popular spot, and full by 6:30pm. It's lively but not loud really. We made reservations. First tried their sushi through their food truck that was in Kihei a couple years ago, and I couldn't believe the quality that came out from that food truck lol. Visited their wailea location and it was just as great, but it was so busy. Now they have their location here in Kahului and it's perfect! I was a little skeptical getting sushi from a food truck, and frankly my skepticism was correct. The speciality rolls are $20+. I ordered two of them, can't remember which ones unfortunately. The rolls themselves just weren't great. They didn't taste bad, but honestly didn't taste good either. There wasn't really much flavor at all. They also didn't come with anything to actually pour soy sauce into, which made things a little difficult. I did order some salmon nigiri, which was actually quite large, and was ultimately probably a little better than the rolls. read more

Went here today for lunch. Have been wanting to try them out since they opened this location. I have been to the Wailea location before and have tried them as a food truck. The service was very good we were greeted at the front door and seated right away. Then our waiter came over and checked on us to see if we wanted anything besides water. It was nice because it seemed like everyone there were working together. The food was good the ambiance was nice. I Definitely like the variety of places to eat. On this trip we ordered the Brussel sprouts,Hamachi carpaccio, Soft Shell Crab Hand Roll, Baked Mussels. We enjoyed everything. My favorite was the Hamachi carpaccio , we also had a roll with hamachi and jalapeños. Which was delicious. The soft shell crab hand roll was a decent sized hand roll. So I walked up and asked if it was happy hour? He said thanks for reminding me you get a special menu. So I ordered 2 items off the happy hour menu. Food was good. Located in the old Maui Tacos spot next door to Spectrum, Oao is the 2nd brick and mortar location for this group after opening their first dine-in location at the Wailea Gateway Center a couple years ago. I have eaten a lot of their maki rolls at their food truck and Wailea spot, and they do a really good job of creating eye-pleasing sushi rolls that mostly incorporate avocado, crab mix, shrimp tempura, tuna/salmon/hamachi, and unagi sauce. I love the food her! The dynamite and the Japanese wings are sooo good!! The sushi tastes so fresh and is worth every penny! However, the hostess here is so rude and sassy. She rolled her eyes and made us feel bad for asking if it was ok if we could be sat at a different table. The reason why we asked to be sat somewhere else is just because we're bigger people and we would have to squeeze past the customers that were already sitting down and tucked into the wall.
