Here for a work conference and wanted to take my co worker to dinner. She's been working so hard;)! I couldn't convince her to enjoy a mocktail, though. We were there early and were so excited. The menu is wonderful and they had several specials! Lots of seating, and we were given the option for the izakaya or dining areas. My co worker picked the kabocha pumpkin salad and she loved it! She had a side of sesame chicken - and got a huge serving with lots of their yummy sauce. I ordered the bento box, which includes shrimp and mixed tempura. I picked the chicken teriyaki and sesame chicken as the other two entrees (thinking in advance of leftovers for later at the hotel). The miso soup, tempura and dipping sauce were superb! However, my sesame chicken was super dry and had very little sauce - I was scraping the tray to get a bit of sauce for the few pieces I tried to eat. (Comparatively, my co worker's empty plate was covered with sauce after she had plated her leftovers;() Same for my chicken teriyaki. I'd saved those for leftovers anyway; and asked for a cup of extra sauce for the takeout. I was offered a bag when I inquired. Perhaps I was preoccupied, but neither of these arrived. (And we were there awhile - because we chatted with some new guest arrivals.) After greeting the other guests, I forgot all about it until I placed the container in the hotel fridge. Oh well, these leftovers may be wasted unless I can bring a cooler home. Overall, they offer a great value and I'm usually totally happy with my meal. To be fair, early service was very good, until I tipped @ 20% (+) based on the receipt (some believe one shouldn't tip on tax, and I forgot to check). Not a big deal, but...I really needed a cup of sauce for the overly dry chicken leftovers. And yes, it's my fault for not speaking up earlier during the meal, and for forgetting to ask again afterwards. First time to be personally disappointed here, but again, my co worker was totally happy!

The day after Thanksgiving on the Big Island, we made our way to Hilo for lunch. It was getting busy, and we got one of the last tables. Started with Margaritas (stir, not slushy mix). Ordered Sesame Chicken (one regular size, one half size), regular-size Beef teriyaki, and 1/2 half-size Tofu Steak plate. Everybody was happy with their orders. I found the regular-sized Sesame Chicken was a nice portion- the chicken was breaded and overcooked, with the breading crunchy and the chicken tougher than expected. Braeden provided excellent and friendly service. Restrooms were very clean.

The entry into the restaurant with red door is vibe all in itself and a plus for me !

Everything from food , service to ambience was great. I'm from Kona, and I've always sent people there cause I've heard so many great reviews. But I've never seen to have made it there. And I finally made it today and it did not disappoint. I sat at the izakaya bar , I couldn't make up my mind with the menu. I ended up with the oyaku don and some mio sparkling sake. The portion was ginormous! I was a few bites in and had to pack it to go. Then I got home and wanted to kick myself. I forgot my food on the counter. I am so saddened by this

This place was delicious. Perfect stop later in the evening post volcano trip. The egg on toast appetizer is a MUST. I could eat two orders. Our server was the sweetest, and they let me try different sake before ordering. The side of mushrooms for $20 some dollars seemed outrageously pricey, but it was a large place of delicious mushrooms. Not just a small side. I had the hardest deciding between their entrees, it all looked so good. I got a sushi salmon and protein duo plate. I can't remember what protein, but remember that being pretty basic, with a lot of excess greens. I wished I got the bowl instead. Overall, it's a place I would go back to. The bar setting is my preferred seating location too. Had more decor it seemed walking in. That's where our server was too!

Good solid food! Some dishes were especially good...the egg toast, shiso bites and squid & eggplant. The sauté mushrooms and fries were ok. The combination dishes were pretty standard (sashimi, beef teriyaki, tempura)

Located on the Big Island of Hawaii in the cute town of Hilo. Miyo's is a popular local family style retaurant offering Japanese home style comfort food. They have tempura, sukiyaki, fresh fish, sushi, chicken and more. Suggest having a reservation as they can be very busy. Service was nice and friendly. Not fancy but lovely and comfrorable. Lots of parking out front. Located in a small business mix area

You can tell this place is a local gem! Typical local Japanese vibe. Food was tasty. Service was awesome. Pork tonkatsu was a little over done and Sukiyaki a little on the salty side. But, overall we left happy.

Very underwhelming experience, this restaurant is Japanese in name only. For starters, after being seated we had a 1 hour wait to be served food for a table of 4. And then we the food finally came, it was cold and unappetizing. Miso soup was way too salty and the salad was perfectly average. The beef teriyaki and chicken katsu combo plate came out lukewarm which is unacceptable considering I waited 1 hour and they can't even bring hot food. Shrimp tempura according to my mom was underwhelming and not the best tasting. Beef curry was the worst out of all the dishes. It was so watered down and tasted like water, 0 curry flavor whatsoever. Considering these plates were $25 each, I'd stay clear of this place. Definite tourist trap. If you want authentic Japanese food, go to the ramen place nextdoor instead. They have a better curry rice bowl despite being a ramen place.

So..... "Honolulu" has hit Hilo. 45 minute or more waits, long lines, izakayas, ramen, very little parking. Miyo - the long time Japanese restaurant has gone upscale. The prices are up, the bar is plentiful, the place is PACKED. I ended up here because the original place we were trying to go to had an hour wait. Yes, an hour wait in Hilo. My dad used to say "anything longer than 15 mins, I leave". No more. The lines are long and the prices are up. But, being from Honolulu, I am used to all of this! We asked to sit at the bar and was seated right away. It took a while to get drinks and food but I have to say, the old school food is still available. The katsu-curry was old school with broccoli in the curry and the katsu had an old school vibe - nicely seasoned when eaten by itself. I can't say I like the long lines and wait, but the food here is pleasantly familiar!

A wide variety of selections for our entire family. Service was awesome. We will be back!

    Ahi Don. Yes please!

While waiting for the rest of our reunion group to arrive, three of us dined at Miyo's at the recommendation of our helpful Car Rental Agent Rose and, after seeing so many of my Yelp friends, like Terry K endorsement. Impressed with the deliciousness of the food while reasonableness of the prices, we all agreed... will be a repeat on future visits to Hilo. What we had: two if us ordered the popular ahi-don: a battered and fried generous portion of ahi, served over a bed of white rice and drizzled with a delicious slightly spicy and sweet sauce. Other friend ordered a eggplant and squid stir fry; portions so big that the rice was served on separate dish! Still, all places cleaned up without a grain of rice left... that good! Service was so friendly AND efficient. Restaurant conveniently located in a strip mall with lots of parking.

Stopped by on a reccomendation from a local friend and was not disappointed! Portion sizes were huge! We had tons of leftovers. I really enjoyed my sukiyaki and my sisters tonkatsu! Food was tasty and flavorful and satisfied the japanese craving. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is because there wasnt anything I was raving about. Waitress was very attentive and patient with our large party. And the place was clean and decor well thought out! Definitely check this place out!

I wanted to try this place since we were on a quick vacation on the Big Island. We checked out their menu the day before, and we wanted to make it here before we left. We decided to dine for dinner. After a long drive back from Kona, in the pouring rain and fog, we figured we it out before we go back to our hotel. We were greeted promptly and seated. Our waitress brought us water and made some suggestions on what their popular dishes were. We settled on the squid and eggplant plate and the tempura zaru. The whole staff were so nice and accommodating. They heard that it took us around 2hrs to get back to Hilo, that they brought us out a little appetizer "that the chef" was testing to see if they wanted to put it on the menu. As we waited for our food, we dined on the appetizer (hamachi carpaccio with ponzu and green onion) which was a perfect balance of flavor with all the ingredients working well. Our food came out and it was good. My girlfriend got the squid & eggplant. The squid was tender and the eggplant cooked perfect with a light char on in. My tempura and soba was tasty. The tempura came with 2 shrimp, and a mix of vegetables. Overall, very nice, clean restaurant. Friendly staff, and good food. We would dine here again to try some of their other dishes.

Walking in, it seemed like the place has seen better days. However, looking at everyone in the bar, they all seemed like someone you could easily strike up a conversation with. We even got to try Lihing mui powder. If you go, look it up and ask for a glass rimmed with it! There is no air conditioning within the bar but we'd been there after sunset and didn't really feel hot. The bartender Kya? Kia? was so wonderful! After checking out the reviews, I did see some negative Nancy's on the platform talking about how this felt like a 'locals only' place. When I walked in, I made sure to strike up conversation with Kya and asked how her day was. Everyone on the island realizes you are probably vacationing. My wife and I stopped by for pre-dinner drinks and we absolutely loved the drinks that we were able to try out. I started out with a cocktail called the "Spam Dram", a crispy Spam fat-washed barrel-proof bourbon, combined with seared Spam and nori syrup and topped off with a spam musubi garnish. As one might guess, this drink was presented in a spam musubi tin, and atop the bed of crushed ice was an *entire* spam musubi. The drink was a perfect representation of spam musubi in a glass -- sweet, savory, and full of umami. Props to whichever bartender put together this creative drink. The next drink I ordered was the "Smoky Bear", another bourbon based cocktail. This one had bird's eye chili essence in it, and was much closer than your traditional Old Fashioned, except it had an incredible amount of smokiness and a punch of heat to it as well. If you enjoy stiff drinks with complexity, look no further than this cocktail. While we were seated at the bar, we overheard somebody close to us mentioning a password special that had been posted on the Instagram page of The Hidden Nene. We checked their latest story posted two hours earlier and the password special for the day was a "fizz me baby one more time", a strawberry and yuzu gin fizz. My wife ordered this cocktail as her second drink and loved how refreshing the drink tasted. The current lunch menu 3. The current dinner menu They do have a menu for their lobby bar, but it is not online and then a separate late night bar menu after 9pm which is just a salad and three or four pizza varieties which cannot be ordered at other times. www.grandnaniloahilo.com/dining-bar.htm www.grandnaniloahilo.com/files/7344/Ka_Lihikai_Lunch_Menu_8.2026.pdf www.grandnaniloahilo.com/files/7344/Dinner_Menu_5.2026.pdf The one noteworthy quirk here is that between 4pm and 5pm the only things you can order are the few small light bites from their Happy Hour menu. Lunch stops at 4pm and dinner starts 5pm just like at the bar late night, technically it says the kitchen is open until 11pm but the bar staff will tell you to get your orders in by 10:30 at the latest. We tried a wide range of things such as the pizza (basil-pesto was great), edamame from the happy hour menu, north shore garlic shrimp, lamb chops and the seared scallops. All were good with the only real knock being that the scallop dish only had three scallops which to me is an app, not an entree. No issue with anything in terms of quality or flavor and if you're sitting close to the rear windows or out front when the doors are open, the breeze and ambiance are great. There is also live music a few nights a week which was an added bonus. It goes without saying that the pricing is definitely island/hotel pricing but all of the staff we encountered were great and the food was more than good enough that we enjoyed spending a meal in. No problem coming back.

We ordered the risotto, fresh catch (marlin), crispy rice, gnocchi, and finished off with the mac nut ganache mascarpone pots de crème. We did share a Lemon peel lemonade cocktail. The Lemon peel lemonade was basically spiked lemonade. Well balanced for being a tart oriented drink, but I didn't care for the floating bits. The risotto which comes in full and half order, was very rich and had chunks of mushrooms for flavor. We're glad we got the half as this was a heavy, rich, and cheesy entrée on its own. If you love risotto, you will love this dish. The marlin was perfectly cooked and balanced out with a locally inspired vegetable succotash. Fried bits of kalo were also added in for added texture. The special and new item, the gnocchi was the star of the show. This is by far the fluffiest gnocchi we've ever had. Crispy on the outside, little potato clouds of fluff on the inside. The gnocchi came over a tasty sauce with bits of fried onion for absolute perfection. The crisp rice was recommended by Yelpers and it was alright, crispy rice with a spoon of poke. Not bad, but did not live up to the hype. Get another order of the gnocchi instead. It's fairly rare to see pots de crème on restaurant menus, specials or not, so we had to get this. It came in a cute little glass jar, with rich chocolate and mascarpone flavor with a hint of mac nut. This desert was an absolutely delicious perfect end to the meal. You can make reservations online, street parking is quite limited, and it can get busy as the night goes on, so recommended to get an earlier dinning time. Staffs regularly checked in on us and were polite and efficient.
