Lots of greens was on my plate but it was fresh with a little dressing tossed inside. Only thing theres alot of carrots in the vegetable tempura where's the eggplant string beans but that's ok. Made reservations for dinner for my anniversary was seated promptly food was good all but the ribeye. The steak itself was fine however I ordered medium and it came out well done and it was already cut into pieces. A ribeye shouldn't be served already cut unless your guest are toddlers. Miyo's is an old rustic Japanese decored restuarant in Hilo Town. The food and the service was excellent. They were busy and yet the food came to our table promptly. They did not have the deep fried scallops which I was craving for. So I ordered Teriyaki Beef and the Shimp Tempura combo which was excellent. The restaurant was warm with only ceiling fans working and the louvered windows open. I could see that they had a split a/c unit in the dining area maybe it wasn't wotking. read more

Definitely a hidden gem in Hilo, I'm here currently on my first vacation since 2019. Big island has it's moments but drive across the whole island is so much fun, and when I came across this restaurant on Yelp I had to try since we were spending the whole day in Hilo. The chef/owner was so nice, 4 other guest from a different party failed to show up on time (5pm) by 5:10pm he basically moved us closer to him and served us personally the whole tasting menu, of course his sou chef and line cook were helping out but this experience from start to finish was excellent. Amazing team of professionals. My husband and I participated in the private dining experience with a dedicated chef. The food was exceptional. Each plate was the right size and the the courses went together well. The experience was a little more than 1 hr. and it made for a memorable experience. We found Izakaya Miyo on Yelp when we did a quick search to find a place to eat before we head to the airport. We didn't realize it was a tasting menu with the head chef, chef Louis running the tasting menu with his pastry and sous chef, chef Sara. It was an omakase styled sea food based menu. This is not your classic Japanese restaurant, and chef Louis is not your classic Japanese cuisine chef! He brings tons of experience from being all around the world and puts his twists on classics. We were surprised to find such a high quality restaurant in a sleepy town like Hilo. This was the perfect end to our wonderful vacation in Hawaii. Having front row seats as the chef cooked the dishes and then explaining to us what he made with a little bit of a story behind each dish was pretty good. We loved every course. I guess the only qualm I had was a little less salt in my soup, but my wife thought it was perfect! So I think that comes down to personal preference. My personal favorite was the sushi trio as well as the octopus main course, both had a nice bit of heat and kick in the end which we enjoyed. The octopus was cooked perfectly. The trio of fish were all buttery and fresh. Both the courses were great! The dessert was inspired and we loved what chef Sara had to offer us. The apple compote with vanilla cremeux was soft, airy and light with just the right amount of sweetness and the apple moscato sorbet with the right amount of tartness. Overall we loved what Chef Louis is doing. He notes having created over 45 menus and changes the pre-fixe menu every week! This is awesome. The one advice I give you is make a reservation. Lucky my friends and I did cause it was filled up and had people wait for a table to be free. It was like 5:30pm on a weekday. Review on food is good. Price is fair, I had their combination bento dinner combo and another time tried their tonkastu. Portion depends what you get. So look at pictures if anyone posted, unfortunately I didn't. The cost of the bentos must've recently increased that is why we were quoted $22.00. The cost on the menu posted outside the restaurant is $23.50. Ok so I'm updating my original review because the bento was very filling and tasty. It came with miso soup, rice, 2 shrimp tempura and an assortment of vegetable tempura. A carrot, broccoli, zucchini and a sweet potato. The tempura sauce had a slightly sweet taste and was a good dipping sauce. We ordered teriyaki beef and chicken katsu as our two entrees. The beef was grilled with a slight char. Very tender and tasty. The chicken katsu was crispy and the katsu sauce was more on the ketchupy sweet side but it tasted very good and there was enough sauce provided for this meal. 3.5 stars for the amount of food provided and the taste. read more

Had a reservation for two at 6:30pm and we were seated right away. Hostess was friendly and gave us waters and our menu. There was a main menu, a cocktail menu and a specials menu. We ordered the appetizer sampler plate, combination plate F (beef teriyaki & chicken katsu) , and the Izakaya Snapper from the Specials menu. Ariana was our server, she was nice and I appreciated that she always checked if we were ok. Food came out fast and I also got full very fast. Staying at Grand Naniloa, this place is close. Recommended by guide book, good Yelp reviews. Located in unlikely area, sorta industrial. Once we arrive, it's clear that this is a local favorite. We are seated immediately, great menu and specials. We get vegetable tempura, Shabu Shabu vegetable, a fried fish special, and a beer. All delicious. We loved Miyo's! We showed up at 1:50pm and were expecting to be turned away because we had a group of 8 including 2 children, and they closed at 2pm. But the host was so kind and wanted us to stay with them. He was so sweet to us. Our food came out so very quickly and was incredible! I got the chicken katsu curry and it was out of the park. It was a huge serving--enough to share so everyone could try. The curry was simmered with the perfect amount of spices and the vegetables were cooked just the right amount. The chicken katsu was so very crispy crunchy and went so well with the curry sauce. We also got tonkatsu curry--which was even better! Along with beef and chicken teriyaki. All very perfect. Contrary to previous reviews, we were seated relatively quickly and the elderly lady managed to take our order in a timely manner while multitasking phone calls and other diners.She even offered us extra plates because she knew two of us were sharing. I think it depends on what time of the year you come and which meal you come for. The portion sizes are rather small for an average person but seem very clean and well made. The food overall was delicious. A few notes I had: The steak was just the right amount of chewy, juicy, aand charred. The salad they give is very a bit heavily seasoned. The eggplants we got with the ribeye were easy to chew, flavorful, but had a good amount of sesame oil so it depends on how you feel about amounts of oil. I am really oil sensitive. My mom got the butterfish and said it was very tender and not flavored overwhelmingly. For future reference, I would definitely make a reservation in the winter or else all the inside seats are taken. read more

First time eating at Miyo's after some disappointing meals a few years ago. It was my favorite restaurant for years. I gave it a try again yesterday for lunch and was pleasantly surprised. The food and service were excellent. Servers came to our table at least three times to check if we needed anything. Shrimp tempura and vegetables were large and perfectly cooked. Was looking forward to eating at this place, recommended by a local guide but unfortunately it was not a good experience for us. It's called an izakaya but was nothing like it. We had a reservation that was accommodated on time, but our food arrived an hour after. The beer I ordered was not accompanied by any snacks or even peanuts. The miso soup was served 30 minutes before the bento. The bento arrived and it was SAD. The Saba that was broiled was charred and unseasoned. No salt. No taste. The tempura was cold and oily. My husband's sesame chicken tasted "old" like it was reheated and then dressed. The only thing good on our bento was the ahi which on its own tasted well because it just needed to be cut up. Even the daikon oroshi tasted weird. We are heading to Teshima's for REAL Japanese comfort food to erase the charred remnants of our Saba from our tastebuds. read more

Flew into Hilo to check out all the buzz behind this new mainland and Italy trained Chef Louis Paole's unique weekly offerings at this intimate addition to the Hilo mainstay Miyo's. While Miyo's is known for their reasonably priced Japanese comfort food, the Izakaya is truly rarified air. You absolutely have to have a reservation as it is a limited seating on Tuesday through Saturday evenings. It is a set price menu, with truly exceptional sake or wine pairings. Hint, go for the sake and you will experience how eclectic Japanese inspired cuisine tastes best with rare imported high-end sakes from Japan. We enjoyed sitting at the bar and watching Chefs Louis, Sarah and Dale orchestrate an intimate meal with select ingredients, many ordered especially for the meal from Japan sources, and local big island vegetables. We began with a tomato soup that included special reductions. I could have quit after this initial offering with an equally exquisite sake pairing. Next we enjoyed a creative egg sous vide sandwich on buttered Japanese bread with caviar. I thought this was definitely a signature dish that absolutely should be on everyone's bucket list. A creative stack of ahi sashimi with special reductions was next up. Then there was a series of custom sushi preparations with included included local caught ono, cured Alaskan salmon, and uni from Hokkaido. The pairing included a sake that was prepared from specially milled rice. The main dish was a sous vide pork loin with green and red apple sauces with sides of carrot foam, and beer reduction sauce over red apples and red cabbage. Although please note that my descriptions don't give justice to the dishes as my memory is a bit hazy after so much sake! Just so you know, It was equally as satisfying to watch Chef Louis cook and prepare the dish as it was to savor its intense flavorings. Dessert was a baked pear with fig jam mousse, with a pistachio cream sauce. I can't even remember the pairing, but trust me, it was special. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by this meal, and I have to admit, it exceeded my expectations for a Hilo restaurant. I would not hesitate to fly over again just for a meal here. 2 thumbs up Chef Louis and team! You outdid yourself, and we truly appreciated it. We'll be back! read more

Music mixture, that's what you'll here from a live singer playing his guitar, while eating dinner. His music is wonderful, but it is a little loud when trying to converse at the table. So this was our experience: Arrive at 5:15pm, greeted quickly by the hostess. She noted they don't open until 5:30, but would get our table together. She then asked for us to be seated on an outdoor table and she will come to get us. So, we wait patiently. 5:30 on the dot they open with now 4 parties waiting in the lone at the hostess. She asks first, "any reservations?" One party quickly raised their hands and she quickly took them inside to be seated. This was the only party with a reservation, so I understood that even being their first, they are seated before us. Then she comes back out and says, how many dining tonight to another party. She quickly seats them too. Now after going through 3 other non reservations that arrived WELL AFTER us, we walk up to see what's going on. She looks at us and said, "yes? How many?" Uhhhh really lady??? Quickly we all responded ahhhh we were here first and you asked us to wait on the table! "Oh yeah, sorry" she said. Seriously, it's not that big of a place or busy. You are in the wrong business if you messed that up. Anyway, moving on to dinner. We ordered the appetizers for dinner, never came, and yet still ended up on the bill too. Water was empty 90% of the meal. Again, this isn't a huge place with only one wait staff, so no excuses. The sashimi is way to thickly cut. The food, only average. Best part of the meal was the green tea ice cream. Our server was SUPER nice but just didn't make the cut for being on it.
