Professional and welcoming staff saved a bad night. After a bizarre and highly hostile interaction with a rogue manager at the connected Mizpah Club/A&W next door, I walked over to the historic Mizpah Hotel to file a complaint. The desk manager was incredibly professional, empathetic, and attentive. She took my complaint seriously and immediately informed the General Manager about the behavior next door. She went out of her way to reassure me, confirmed that I was absolutely welcome at the hotel, and gave me permission to use their facilities. While the management next door at the club/A&W lacks basic customer service skills, the team at the Mizpah Hotel understands true hospitality. We made our way through the Sierra Nevada Mountains and down in to the town of Tonopah where we stayed the night at the Mizpah Hotel. It's said to be the most haunted hotel in America. The architecture and decor is lovely: beautiful windows, chandeliers, wallpaper, wood bars, carpeted stairs, old elevators, velvet couches, etc. According to their website, it's been a destination since 1907 and was restored to its glorious yesteryear decor in 2011. There are ghost stories about a little boy and girl heard laughing on the 4th floor, miners in the basement, the elevator operator and the infamous "Lady In Red". She is the most sighted ghost at the hotel, it was said that she was murdered in room 512 by a jealous lover and walks the halls of the 5th floor. We stayed in the room next to hers but neither of us heard a peep from her. In fact we had a very restful stay and felt nothing but good vibes the entire time. I like the Mizpah for a trip to Tonopah. Historic and located in the middle of town. Had a really nice meal at The Jack Dempsey room. So glad they are open to 9 now. Complimentary wine tasting for Jim Butler days in the dining room. Rooms are ok, older decorations but thats the Mitzpah attraction. Nice staff in all the areas. Nothing special besides a creepy old run down, unkept, uncleaned, dirty hotel, hotel rooms from the 1900's Tonopah with a rude, vulgar, unprofessional #unkept woman dressed like she just got done with a 36hr OTR drive in a semi truck, with a matching vulgar mouth that sound worse then a mouth of a sailor. That woman talked so much trash about previous hotel guest who had issues with the broken down rooms and hotel, she stated the staff has a certain "f*** off" statement that she tells anyone who complaints (quoting that employee). We stopped and stayed in the "Red Lady Room". The things scary about this room were the fiberglass tub (they had fiberglass tubs in the 1900's??? ) that DIDNOT drain at all, the BROKEN furniture and single wooden chair, the BROKEN wooden blinds in the bathroom, the DARK YELLOW stained sheets and stained comforter, dirty cracked windows being held open with pieces of sticks, broken air condition. Dont forget you have to step into the tub to close the bathroom door to get to the potty.. Did I mention the elevator that takes the doors 3 minutes to close that was last inspected in 1911 that has names scratched into the walls and doors?? Reno Gazette did an article on 11-11-2000 How Sen. Pittman died on 11-10-1940 after winning the election and oldwivestales state his body was kept on ice, another 'story' they are passing as facts . Want to see where the MizPah Hotel is letting its stories and fibs from.... Google them, read the articles, do your homework before stepping into that traffic jam. You want to know what else you will experience here?? When someone else in ANOTHER ROOM (anywhere on the same floor) uses the #bathroom. The smells fill the hallways, stairs, corridors and your room. They try and mask the odor and mildew by putting plug-in's in every corner of each floor. Ghost: The hotel has a 3 ring binder of "hand written" experiences over 10-15 years old (same time the WSJ was posted) with pages stuck together, all in similar had writing that other people have heard, seen #orbs with #flashes in the mirrors (dust particles because the #ventilation is so dirty and old) and heard kids playing the hallway.. you can hear everyone in the hallway, looking around trying door knows . Nothing haunted about this place but the yellow stains on the bed sheets in the room your staying in. The hotel is run down with furniture that has been donated from the local families or stuff they 'found' in the trash on the side road (quoting the bartender down stairs) where we got dinner. The only ghost you'll see here are the ones in your head when leaving w/o ur $$$ and bad night sleep. Actually stop and look at the decoration, the pictures and furniture. Very few pieces are even related to the hotel, to "so called" incidents that "so called, took place" at the hotel - that you cannot find on paper anywhere. Some 'random' lady in red was "maybe" murdered on the 5th floor.. somewhere there - as the 'story' goes.. The murder of a 'political figure' kept in a bathtub of ice? Look at the newspaper article posted in their lobby thats from the "Wall Street Journal" dated 07-31-2015, stating "Ghost Town: Tonopah "Hopes to Become a Tourist Haunt". Hold on, hopes... and the actual WSJ states its a "upsell to help the town". Oh and for some weird reason, the title on the 'printed newspaper' in the frame vs the actual website article IS DIFFERENT! This is a old hotel that they don't fix broken things. Repair something, fix the things there that are either broken or missing parts. We were returning from Reno & decided to spend the night at the historic Mizpah Hotel. Hard to believe that at one time this five story property was the tallest building in NV. Reading some of the literature about the hotel, it shows it had the first elevator in Tonopah. We stayed on the fifth floor, but didn't have any contact with The Lady in Red, who is said to wander that floor. The room itself was quite nice, clean, with a comfortable bed while the hotel shows the old world artistry of hand made interior decorations. The staff were all friendly & helpful. We had dinner in the Jack Dempsey Room which was very good & breakfast in the Pittman Cafe, which was not nearly as nice. Parking was tight, but close by the entrance. read more

Very beautiful hotel, well equipped for luxury. Missing fridges in rooms, but that was hardly an inconvenience. Loved the Ghost Tour and the histories of the hotel's residents. Great get-away to relax; walking distance from many activities - including a little park with grass, trees, gazebo and two picnic tables.... perfect for reading, listening to podcasts and just relaxing OUTSIDE (something impossible in Las Vegas during the heart of summer). read more

Historic hotel with old charm [Tonopah NV] After passing through the town of Tonopah several times on our way to Las Vegas we finally booked a room at the Mizpah Hotel for an overnight stay. Last year I had a chance to walk around the different floors and housekeeping was nice enough to show me the Lady In Red room on the 5th floor, Room #502. My original review has a more detailed account of my experience where at that time I did a solo self-guided tour while hubby waited downstairs in the huge sitting area. This time he came upstairs with me. He said he felt chills and smelled perfume in the air. As for me -- nothing. Smelled like air freshener to me. The Lady in Red is said to be a kindhearted presence, watching over the hotel as if still bound by her past profession. We were assigned a room on the 3rd Floor, supposedly this is the floor where heavy footsteps of children running up and down the halls could be heard. Last year during my visit I did see two children roaming around the floors (one in his early teen and the other younger), it was in mid afternoon after guest checkout so only housekeeping were in the building. It looked like they were helping with the housekeeping because I heard them mention something about a trash bag. This time I saw two kids again when we were on the 3rd floor. The older one told me that "the hotel was haunted" and started giggling as both ran down the stairs. I didn't think anything of it because in both experiences they looked very real LoL! I even asked the desk clerk if there were kids checked in w/ their parents and I was assured "yes" there were families staying that evening. Every time we meet people they would give us a fist bump to make sure we were real ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ At the registration counter there is a large book where guests can note down any paranormal experiences they've encountered during their stay. Wished I had time to read some of them. We did inquire about a ghost tour but we had to book 48 hours in advance so unfortunately we weren't able to do that. Mizpah Hotel is a historic landmark that dates back to 1907, built during the height of the silver mining boom, its name taken from the nearby Mizpah Mine that delivered the first silver lode. The folks who saved and restored this Hotel did a superb job! Their dedication and homage to those that came before is impressive. This is one of the coolest places I've ever stayed. We stayed in the Wyatt Earp Room in a bed styled after a real wagon. Comfortable mattress, great pillows and sheets. The walls gave both a pictorial as well as a written history of Wyatt Earp. The offerings in the room were thoughtful and well laid out. I want to keep coming back until I've tried all the rooms! The staff is friendly and helpful. Be sure to make your reservation at the Jack Dempsey room for a steak dinner you won't forget. This hotel is at the heart of Tonopah's History and incredibly important to preserving an important part of Nevada's History. Step in and you'll feel you've been transported back in time. read more

OK. This is old timey, spooky goodness. Tonopah is one if the wonderful haunted stop-offs when you are traveling through NV. We were doing a "haunted" tour through the Southwest and this hotel came up as a must stay. The hotel is beautiful, it has a fine dining restaurant, snack restaurant and a full bar. You can walk the town from the location. The rooms are upgraded and perfect for an old western hotel. If you are on the trail of haunted hotels, this is a must. If you find yourself in Tonopah and need to spend the night, this is also a great place to stay! read more

The building has been renovated and the decor is charming. That said, go in knowing you're in a building from 1907. Rooms are very small but definitely adequate. Although the hotel is nonsmoking the smell of a hundred years of smoke lingers. Parking... eh...our check in person recommended we park in the street due to the lot being shared with the casino and some recent drunk driver issues. The location is walkable and we felt safe exploring in the evening. Overall, a quaint place and perfectly acceptable for the area. We'd stay again. read more

Stayed in Unit 504: Lady in Red - Ghosted at the Mizpah!! OMG, so fantastic. Guided tour all over the hotel, even the basement!! Food was very good and drinks a great price and strong. The casino is something from the past, as well. The staff makes it all come together. Over the top historic, ghostly and well worth it. We even got to keep overnight, the Dowsing Rods and EMF Meters to detect the spirits. Our room, 504, was on fire with the EMF Meter we had; it lit up so crazy by the bed, had to throw a towel over it to go to sleep. read more

This is a historic hotel and the experience is exactly that. The hotel has been here since the early 1900's and the renovations aimed to keep it looking like it did back then. If you really love the ghost lore get the tour and explore the hotel sections that are off limits to guests. My teenagers loved the time spent here and will be talking about it for a long time. Stayed in the Lady in Red room, which is one of the premium rooms offered at the hotel. All of the windows leak air, and the interior of the room needed to be remodeled. The bathtub surface was peeling, and the water pressure from the shower almost knocked you over. The wife and I went on the ghost tour for 25 dollars per person, and were very disappointed. The woman giving the tour was very uninformed of the history of the hotel, and it was comical listening to her try to communicate with the spirits. At the end of the tour everyone was bored and glad the painful experience was over. The hotel serves breakfast, but you are on your own for dinner. There is a coffee shop at the Belvada, but good luck if you want something on a Sunday, the coffee shop worker is the waitress at the Mizpah for breakfast. read more

A very interesting place with an interesting history. The decor is gorgeous, the craftsmanship is something you do not see in modern architecture anymore. We would've stayed there but the front desk associate a younger woman was extremely rude and had a hostile attitude. I said hello and she rolled her eyes and was not nice when I asked a few questions about the hotel's history. Sadly we decided to leave. If I could give this place six stars I would. My hubby and I stayed in room 303 which is a junior suite and it was a great experience. It's a lovely historic hotel. It's very clean very comfortable with nice amenities. I had one of the best showers I've ever had in my life in that room. Instant hot water and no flow restriction. The Mizpah Hotel was saved from the wrecking ball by the Cline family in 2011 and meticulously restored to its historic glory. The rooms are large and comfortable with modern double paned windows to reduce street noise. The shower had excellent water pressure. The Dempsey Restaurant had a most excellent steak. Behind the hotel is a huge abandoned silver mine, now a museum. Highly recommended. read more

When in Tonopah you are restricted to just a couple dining options. This review is for dinner in the Jack Dempsey bar dining room. As expected from a 100+ year old restored hotel, the dark woods abound. Our server was nice and attentive throughout the evening. The food was good, but pricey. Started with the Bluecheese meatballs - just ok French onion soup - good (careful it comes out VERY hot) Chicken piccata - good Steak frites (steak with fries) - good Again, there are not a lot of options when staying in Tonopah, but to find a non-chain, good restaurant that you can actually dress up for (and who does that anymore?) is a good thing. read more

What has happened to this once jewel of Tonopah? We have been coming to this hotel for 14 years and over the last few trips here things have one by one gone downhill. See my review from last year. This year now to do any dining other than from the bar, you have to make reservations on Open Table and no one waits on you anymore. This is our last year staying at the Mizpah. You may be trying to cater to more younger crowds nowadays although the one thing you are lacking is old fashioned customer service. read more

My review is mainly for the bar area in the lobby. I only stayed at the Mizpah once back in 2017. I recall the room being very clean and comfortable, but for my work, far too small to pack in all my belongings. For the traveler however, perfect. Since 2017, I've stayed elsewhere but frequently come down here to eat at the bar and watch some Sports on TV. Jennifer is the bartender I've mostly interacted with, and she is just simply amazing. Very friendly and professional in her craft and a joy to talk to. I've also encountered many strangers who I've struck up some very interesting conversations with and one of the reasons I come here. It's a great place to unwind and to meet people from all over. Now, you can order the food at the bar just as in the restaurant. The food is excellent and plentiful. Last night I had the Mizpah burger and garlic fries. Trust me, it's a huge meal. Same goes for the Steakhouse burger. Every meal I've had here is prepared well. They have an excellent Chicken Caesar salad as well, and my coworkers love the prime rib night. If you like Mac n Cheese, order the Gouda Mac n Cheese and add the Jalapeños! Another dish that will fill you up. Thank you Dan and Linda for the tip! Now you don't have to partake in the spirits to eat at the bar, I just like sitting there to meet people for conversation. However, Jennifer make an excellent cocktail to complement any meal. They also have several varieties of the Cline Winery wine (they own the place :-)). The Lady in Red (which can only be purchased at the Mizpah) and the Old Vine are great choices for reds. Great, comfortable accommodations in Tonopah. Tonopah was a stopping place along our trip in Nevada. I saw The Mitzpah online, read the history, and knew we had to stay here. We reserved the Lady in Red Suite, hoping for a paranormal experience, but didn't have one. But the room was luxurious, very clean and super comfortable. We had drinks at the bar, dinner in Jack Dempsey's, and breakfast the next morning at the hotel. The staff was great, the service was wonderful and the food and drink were excellent. Title: Above and Beyond - A Lifesaving Stay at the Mizpah Hotel I can't say enough about the incredible kindness and hospitality I experienced at the Mizpah Hotel - especially from Kate at the front desk. After running out of gas 30 miles from my destination with no cell service, no help, and no way to even connect to 911, I found myself walking along a desolate stretch of road with my dog, Oliver. We walked for nearly an hour--only seven cars passed, none stopping--until Oliver, my little white dog, wandered just far enough into the road to catch the eye of a Good Samaritan in a jeep. "Little white dog in the middle of the road? That ain't right," he later told me. That man, Michael, changed everything by giving us a ride to the Mizpah Hotel. By the time we arrived, I was exhausted, anxious, and holding back tears. Kate immediately saw how shaken I was and didn't hesitate to help. She brought out water and treats for Oliver, made sure we were okay, and even helped me connect with AAA. Thanks to her help, the tow truck driver, Dave, brought us some much-needed gas and we were back on the road. But the chaos didn't stop there. Thinking my phone's GPS would kick in eventually, I missed my turn and drove 20 miles in the wrong direction. My phone was at 7% battery with no charger in sight. Just before panic fully set in, AAA called to follow up--thankfully--and the representative guided me to the nearest gas station. I finally made it back to the Mizpah at 12:30 AM, emotionally and physically drained. Kate was still there, just as kind and welcoming as before. She truly went above and beyond to make sure Oliver and I felt safe and cared for. This hotel is not only gorgeous--historic, classy, and full of charm--it's staffed by some of the kindest people I've ever met. I didn't get to enjoy my trip the way I had planned, but I will absolutely be back soon to do it right. To anyone planning a drive through Nevada: NEVER pass a gas station without topping off. We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner at the Mitzpah Hotel. My BF and I each had a starter and an entrée. He had the French onion soup and the salmon with pistachio sauce and potatoes. The salmon was just a tad overcooked and the potatoes were pretty drab and needed butter. I had the wedge salad and the sauteed cod with garlic rice. The cod was delicious and perfectly cooked and the rice was cooked nicely, but had a little bit too much garlic. I wish the plate had a vegetable on it. I would definitely order my dish again. Here's the good news: Beyond beautiful hotel!! Gorgeous room, very clean. Claw foot tub was the best ever. Historical pics around the hotel were amazing. Here's the bad news: the FRONT DESK staff need a good training on professionalism. They weren't rude to me or anything, just VERY unprofessional which DID NOT MATCH the elegance of this hotel. I mean, I don't mind swearing, but staff using curse words and double flipping off their computer in front of me was kind of NOT okay. We stayed at the Mizpah Thanksgiving night. We have passed by this hotel many times during our travels and I have always wanted to stay here. It did not disappoint! The hotel itself is like taking a step back in time with all the antiques and the ambiance is great. Our hotel room was decorated beautifully and was clean and quiet. All the staff were very friendly and attentive. Jennifer, the bartender, is a sweetheart. She was so friendly and knowledgeable about the hotel and the area. We had the Thankgiving dinner in The Jack Dempsey restaurant and the food was as good or better than I could have made myself and the portions were huge. All the traditional Thanksgiving food, so yummy. We will definitely be back the next time we're in the area. read more

Yet the 2 queen room we shared was large with up to date amenities. Amenities they actually sold in their gift shop. We even had a separate area with a sink fir a coffee bar. No individual thermometer for your room. But the room was comfortably warm It too many electrical outlets for computers, etc Some restrictions.. bar/limited casino didn't open til 4. Restaurant opened at 5 and was open for breakfast but not lunch. Was a little disappointed in the restaurant decor ... looked like an old diner. It the limited menu offered good food. I opted for fish and chips and was surprised how good it really was (although the cole slaw was pretty bad). Breakfast the following morning was good. Service was great with limited staff There are many themed rooms. Legend says there are ghosts on the 5 th floor. I stayed here for the weekend with my family in two separate rooms. My daughter saw this hotel on tv and insisted that we go. It costed us just under 200 per night. Pros: Let me start off by saying this is a beautiful hotel with a great vintage feel inside. The furniture and fixtures are beautiful and make you feel almost like you're taking a step back in time. Cons: The room (2 queens) that I stayed in had two separate rooms with two TVs. They only gave us one remote for the two TVs and the front desk told me that we just needed to share the remote. Also, no mini fridge in my room. The other room that my family was in had a mini fridge. Who doesn't have at least a mini fridge in all of their rooms?! I've stayed in many hotels around the country and I've never seen that, especially in a hotel that costs almost 200 per night. The parking lot on the side is really small and there were two trucks taking up four spaces, so I approached the front desk about it due to not being able to park there. The girl was rude and could care less until I told her that I was going to let the air out of both vehicles' tires myself. The front desk people definitely need a different job or some major training on hospitality. They don't care about anything. What a horrible representation of such a beautiful establishment. There was only one (and I mean one) employee that was nice and professional. She's a new hire from Las Vegas that just started. Hopefully the Mizpah makes her the manager if they want people to continue coming back. The overpriced food in the restaurant was served to us in fast food style packaging and the utensils were melted. Definitely not worth over 80 for food at all. Passing through Topanah, NV we decided to stay in the Mizpah Hotel on a Saturday night (next time we may have to stay at the Clown Hotel). This is a very unique and historic hotel with a lot of old history. We asked to be put in a area that might experience some paranormal activity and were put in Room 501 on the 5th floor. Unfortunately, we didn't have any experiences out of the normal. There is a notebook in the lobby area that people write about their stay and paranormal experiences which is interesting to read. We did win on the slots next door at the Mizpah Casino so I guess we could consider they abnormal. This hotel is nice and staff is friendly. They have a bar near the check in desk along with The Dempsey Room that serves dinner and the Pitman Cafe that serves breakfast. Definitely, recommend you stay here if you are in route between Las Vegas and Reno, NV. read more

Only one down fall for me was the restraint closing at the time of checkout...that's sort of rude I felt as if they were set to do that intentionally for the guests to check out at a sooner time ... Although there may be early birds some are on vacation that would like to sleep in and enjoy the time they have to not worry about work,......or a place to eat when waking on vacation. This place is really nice. It's been completely updated functionally without loosing the original feel. It's quite lovely. An unexpected pleasure. There are a few things to be aware of... 1. The elevator does NOT serve all the rooms on upper floors. If you are not able to climb stairs be sure to verify you have elevator access to YOUR room. 2. There is an outdoor RAMP going up to the lobby area just past the main entrance. However getting through the double doors can require a person to help. Then I think it's a couple steps down to the registration desk. If someone is traveling alone and is in a wheelchair, you'd need to make arrangements for someone to help you avoid stairs. It's possible!!! They are very accommodating! 3. Refrigerators are NOT standard. They charge $10 extra for a refrigerator (which is also SMALL) and it's possible it might not be cold when it is delivered. I recommend you discuss this when making a reservation if you require a refrigerator. You may need to phone the hotel directly if you are booking online. The restaurant breakfast was great. But another guest mentioned they were staying "next door" and were very disappointed that they had not been able to get a room at the Mizpah because "the hotel next door is terrible". I didn't ask the name of the place. I'm only mentioning this because come on...in Tonopah NV...could any hotel be full? YES. The Mizpah had ONE room available when I booked the day previous to our arrival. And when I checked in I verified they REALLY were full. So if you want to stay here book it as soon as you can. Basically this place deserves the great reviews. So I won't repeat everything. I will encourage you to pick up and READ the little historical newspaper available at check in. They have more info on request. I will post pics of the additional info here. Our room 507 on the 5th floor had a king bed that almost filled the room. But it had enough space for everything and it felt very elegant! I love old ceilings! The AC was REMARKABLE in a VERY GOOD way. It was cold when we walked in. It was awesome! So I imaged heat is equally great. The nightstands were little antique looking tables with lift ups! See pictures. The bathroom was wonderful. They even included LIP BALM! I was thrilled! The hairdryer includes a nite light. These are small but nice things that make a guest feel special. But the real test is the bed and bedding which was LUSCIOUS! I'm pretty much a budget motel person. I rarely find amenities offered by more expensive chain hotels to be worth the price. But every now and then there is a place SO special that it is worth a splurge. The Mizpah is such a place. Even if you do not spend the night, stop in to the bar or restaurant or just meander around and IMAGINE the existence of this much elegance back in the GOLD RUSH days! I came here to the Mizpah as a way to get away from the heat of Las Vegas into some slightly cooler weather. My wife and I chose this place due to the history of Nevada and wanted to be where there was ghost towns and explore. For the place itself; there is plenty of parking with spaces out back including a dirt lot out back that was clean. The inside of the hotel has a particular smell that I couldn't point out what it was but wasn't offensive. Our hotel room was clean and tidy with a mini Keurig! We enjoyed our quick stay here as we arrived very late and made a drive after I got off work. We went into the casino next door and played on the machines for a bit. We were able to "explore" the hotel for a little bit and experienced the staff here to be very friendly and take a lot of pride of their work. A sincere thank you to the staff of the Mizpah. I'll start out with the good point first. The lobby bar and restaurant are very nice. Good food and wine list, and Jennifer is outstanding. She was the only bartender AND waitress to a room full of customers. She never once got flustered and her service was amazing! I'd give the restaurant/bar 5 Stars. The hotel lobby is nice and we were really looking forward to our stay there, but a few things fell short of our expectations as shown in the attached photos: a bad odor in the hallway, general cleanliness of our room (it looked like the carpeting hadn't been vacuumed in a while), the top sheet had some sort of spotting on it, the bathtub porcelain was peeling and worn in places, the plastic shower curtain was yellowing, water leaked out of the cold water faucet at it's base, there were 6" pieces of 2x4s holding up the storm windows, and our heat didn't work. In addition, the elevator is very dark making it difficult to find the floor button. read more
