I used to come to this theater when I was a kid! I'm so glad it's still around! I came here with some family for a 1015pm showing of Hokum and had a great time! We pre-ordered our tickets online and picked them up at a kiosk when we arrived. We also ordered popcorn and drinks which were delicious. We tried the real butter option for our popcorn which was way better than the other butter topping that they offer. This theater is cool because some of the seats have privacy dividers which I've never seen before. These definitely helped minimize distractions from other people. Well first of all I've been coming to this theater since a child so when I decided to have a nice little day with my daughter I took her today to watch toy story she's 3 so I had my small diaper bag there was plenty of other people with much bigger bags who clearly had no problems with getting in but my bag must've bothered the young man at the ticket booth because I had to take it off and put it in my car she's 3 reminder still potty training and I have ointments all my personal stuff in there so why am I the only mother that had to put my bag away the manager looked through it etc it was very discriminating and kinda embarrassing bc why am I the only person getting looked at like this yano?! But anywho didn't let it ruin our night we get in line get our little popcorn box with the snack and drink the young lady at the food and drink station gives us our stuff with 2 quarters tokens whatever and a little white box thing for refills okay me and my daughter wait in line to get the refills I have the quarters and the little white box thing not the original box but I didn't know I thought that's what the quarters were for and the white box anywho another young lady tells me I have the have the original box I'm with my 3 year old she's running wild we waitied in line for 20 mins that wanted me to go get the original box after all that it felt like I was literally getting played with tonight it was insulting and very hurtful I don't know if I do ever wanna go back there to be honest. read more

Depending when you come here is when you get the best experience. When it's peak times the floor, bathrooms,drink and popcorn area needs accessive care because people are soooo messy lol. We went to see How To Train Your Dragon. Movie theater 11. There's nothing like reclining in those comfy seats and clapping along to the iconic theme song. The IMAX theater is so nice and big! The food is so delicious! I got the medium popcorn, 2 hot dogs, and a medium fountain drink. Unpopular opinion, I strongly dislike the new machine. It was so much easier to choose what drink and the flavor(s) you want before. The theater was pretty clean from what I can see. I am a little confused why they rarely have anyone looking if people have tickets. I feel like it's not fair that someone could just walk in to see a movie for free. Don't worry I would NEVER, it's just weird no one is working there. Other than that no complaints! I do wish that more theaters were two stories for convenience. FIRST when I got in my theater I went to take my seat and a FAMILY of FIVE had taken MY seats. They were rude so I had to find ANOTHER seat when I PAID to sit there. After finding a new empty seat it happened to be someone else's so therefore moving AGAIN. I love this theater. My boyfriend and I never used to go to the movies but now we go 3-4 times a month because of this theater. The tickets are extremely reasonable and the seats are comfortable. They also offer so many different movie experiences - laser 4K, IMAX, 3D, and probably some more I haven't had the opportunity to check out yet. Anyways. With restrictions closing theaters for a long time there, I was so excited to back before government restrictions closed its doors again for a time being. MJR used to be a staple in my household and it was (and still is) one my favorite theater chains. The theater itself was kept very clean and seating was socially distanced. The bathrooms were very clean and there's no loitering inside if you're movie is not showing soon. While here I went and seen Freaky within the Epic theater and I was NOT disappointed! The screen was large, the seats were comfy, the sound was amazing, and the theater it's in is large itself!! It's only 2$ more to see a movie in Epic than regular screening. If you can afford the splurge, go for it! MJR had its classic combos, but I ended up sticking to a large soda (or as us Michiganders call it, Pop!) and boy was the pop large! Barely was able to fit into my cup holder when I left! They have a large parking lot so there is ample parking. The website to order tickets are wonderful and easy to use. No one scanned our tickets as we walked in as the sign stated to just head to your theater/snack stand. read more

FEMALE MANAGERS DO NOT CHECK ON SUBORDINATES WORK. Some garbage picked up and TP replaced. Everything else was ignored, and the final straw: SUBORDINATES BLOCKED OFF BOTH RESTROOMS NEVER MOPPED FLOORS WITH 2 SIGNS IN FRONT OF EACH UNISEX RESTROOM ON SECOND FLOOR! This is Mom and my theater of choice. Inside is standard MJR. Large, open lobby with some benches. Screen showing a trailer loop. Food: expensive (standard movie theater pricing) but fresh, basic options. Combo recommended to save a buck or two. You butter and salt your own popcorn - ask for your popcorn to be filled halfway do you can b/s then have them finish the fill. Seats: comfy leather recliners. No heat option (as of Jan 2020). Each theater had a couple seats on the main floor where you can sit next to your companion in a wheelchair, or assist them into a recliner and store their chair nearby ( Momma). I loved it then, and I love it now. With the newly redone recliner seats in the epic theatre is definitely life. I'm super glad that this very exact movie house does keep up with everything that's current in the theatre trade. Booze, Food and now,, assigned recliner seating. I love coming to watch movies here. Enormous movie theaters although the individual viewing areas are small. Electric recliner seating and because each theater is compact anywhere you sit you can see the screen just fine. A glass of soda was over five dollars but if you buy the children's popcorn for 675 you get popcorn, candy, and the soda. Tuesdays are reduced prices. We went there two days in a row and was not disappointed. They keep the theater clean. read more

When me and my friends arrived we were greeted by a man and he was very upfront and rude, we brought blankets and he told us we needed to shake them out, we did so and he kept telling us to continue shaking them even though they were just blankets, he told us that if we were caught sneaking candy/ food in we would be asked to leave, we returned to our cars to put our water bottles back in to avoid any conflict and the man was still very rude. We were very disappointed as we were being very respectful and listening, not coming back. I came here yesterday with my boyfriend, we were trying out our MoviePass app for the first time but haven't received our physical cards yet, and MJR Southgate does e-ticketing. I'm very familiar with MJR, and I live down the street from MJR Troy. MJR Southgate used to be just the Southgate cinema, he told me, and has since renovated and added recliner seats. We ended up getting a drink, since they have the new Pepsi (Freestyle?) machines, similar to the Coke Freestyle ones. We saw the movie Detroit and although the theater was small (only 4 rows), it was comfortable. My only small gripe is that the seats don't recline back that far (compared to Emagine Royal Oak, AMC John R, and other recliner-style theaters I've been to), but that might have been because we were in the back row. Overall, a nice place to see a movie, and I'm sure I'll be back at some point. read more

This place is huge, especially compared to the MJR in Westland. They had at least 4 stands of cashiers ready to serve you, a lot more games, in fact they had games on both sides of the entrance. The bar area was larger and more roomy, lots of tables and chairs if you want to have a drink before or after the movie. This theater has 20 showrooms compared to Westland which has 16. The servers and the clean up crew were so polite and nice, from the ticket taker to the clean up crew when we left were everyone was really nice. They even have parking lot security. There's a ton of parking, the only downside to the parking is when you park toward the back it seems like it takes about two blocks to get to the entrance. Even though this theater is about 18 miles away compared to Westland being only 6.5 miles. We will be back, there's also a few good restaurants near there, so we're looking forward to another date night in Southgate. read more

Use to love going to this movie theater but sometimes it is cheaper to go somewhere else. There is some bad things about this movie theater but mostly good. Why I gave it 4 stars instead of one. Let's start with the good. All the theatre have recliner seats. Also, there is a bar so you can grab a drink. They have gotten some new pop machines that are easier to use. But these pop machines have Pepsi, sorry for you people who only drink coke products. The theatre is easy to go through and find your movie. You can even buy tickets online if you want. They have a reward system so that you can get free stuff, however, it is not like their previous rewards were it was easier to get points and free stuff. And I cannot forget the best thing about this theatre. My husband would shot me if I did. The famous clap in previews that is known apparently by many. So now the bad. There is really only one thing I can say that they need to work on and that is the recliner seats. They nice and fluffy but when they recline it stops at an awkward spot and just needs to recline a little more. read more

I love MJR Southgate! It's located on Trenton near Eureka in Southgate. It's got a great location, which is one reason I love it. Their ticket prices are very fair... For example, all movies playing before 6 p.m. are only $5. They also offer student discounts and senior discounts. I rarely get anything from the concession stand but when I do, I LOVE that they give free refills on pop and popcorn. It's more fun at MJR! read more

I've been going to this theater for years and don't really have any complaints. However, it's not a super fancy place like the new Cinnemark that opened by Southland or Emagine, which I'm fine with. For instance, they don't have reclining chairs like at Cinnemark and you can't choose your seats in advanced. I love how they have free popcorn seasoning unlike Cinnemark who charges for this. They also have a decent reward program where after every 5 tickets, you get something like pop, popcorn, or a free ticket. Once you have bought 50 tickets, you get 2 free tickets, 2 pops, and 2 popcorns. You can get credited for up to two tickets a day. They also have student discount tickets. Also, in the summer, MJR usually has free popcorn on Tuesdays! read more

Probably the best movie theater around, even if the nighttime showings are a bit pricey. They also don't run the midnight movies anymore. I once saw a 3 hour movie that started at 12:20am, and the place was a ghost town. The concession prices are also absurd but not unusual for a theater. It's very easy to just sneak something in to eat/drink since rarely will an usher be present during the movie (unless it's a crowded showing). I've never once had a problem going here. It's always clean and well staffed. The staff members are generally uncaring and quick to rush you along, but who cares? You're there to see a movie, not get served. The screens are huge, and the sound is loud and high quality. Also, because the place is so big with attentive workers few and far between, it's easy to watch one movie and then walk to another room for the start of another movie. We've done this many times on evenings where we had nothing else to do and didn't want to pay $10 to see a second movie. They also offer free refills on their large popcorn and pop (something that costs $10). So, if you're going to be there for a long time, it's worth the price. read more

MJR Southgate used to be "the spot" when I was growing up, then it went downhill fast. But now the theaters are clean, spacious, and they play top-run films with a decent sprinkle of lower/indie films. I use MoviePass and love the E-seating option for MJR. Any issues I have with functionality I take with MP, not the theater. There's plenty of drink machines and condiments stations, though I wish they were a bit quicker with the concession lines themselves. I appreciate the free popcorn refills, but I also miss the smaller concessions being available in each wing in the event I leave the theater for a refill. Top quality theater in an area it really doesn't have to be. I'm glad they choose to be that way, though. read more

My family and I have been enjoying movies at MJR Southgate Cinema 20 for the past 5 years. On average, we have 2 movie nights a month (sometimes more). Each time, we spend at least $80.00 for tickets and concessions. If my calculations are correct, over the past 5 years, we have spent $9,600 at this location. Tonight, after trunk or treating, we took the kids to see Black Adam. We bought our tickets and our usual concessions, totalling $80.00. We allowed the kids to bring their small bag of candy from trunk or treating. Upon entering the theater, we were stopped by an employee, who asked what the kids had in their bags. We told him that they had Halloween candy because we just came from trunk or treating. He refused to let us in unless we left our bags at the front desk. We called the manager over, who proceeded to explain their policy. I get it. They don't allow outside food or drinks in because they sell their own (at ridiculously high prices). If we hadn't just purchased $40 worth of popcorn and drinks, I could understand them not allowing us to take in some candy. We asked for our money back, left our concessions, and went to the next viewing of Black Adam at Emagine Theater (which was cheaper and quite honestly more comfortable). But now.. -The prices continue to go up every single time I visit. -Unless you're like 5'10" the new reclining seats are TERRIBLE. I had a headache 10 minutes into the movie because the head rest just pushed my head forward. There's no way to get comfortable. -If you were previously a rewards member - all of your points are now voided with the new rewards program they introduced. I had over 900 points on my old card and now I have zero. They do not do free giveaways with reward points anymore (ex: free tickets, popcorn, drinks, or candy). Now, for every $50 you spend, you get $5 added to your rewards card that now acts as a gift card. I'd rather just wait until the movie comes out on RedBox... read more
