MN Nice is truly nice, instead of "Minnesota Nice". (Perhaps nice in Minnesota, but I'll explain at the end if you're confused.) You have a lot of choices and it didn't feel too expensive. I got one of their suggested flavor combos, called the Camper, in a dish, because there was a "dish advisory" on their menu, making cones possibly too messy with the inexplicably hotter and more humid than heck weather that we get here in July after 10 months of cold and cool weather, plus the urban heat island effect in the middle of the landlocked prairie. The Camper is like a camping trip in a dish (or cone), with s'mores (marshmallow, chocolate, graham crackers), sprinkles, pretzels and maybe some other stuff. I was literally doing the Ruxin song and dance while eating it. (Ruxin from The League: "Sweet and salty, crunchy too! Sweet and salty...") It was pretty good, but it is soft serve, so it's not as cool as other ice creams that you'd get by the scoop. I got the vanilla, which was lactose free. They also have lactose-free chocolate. That day (and maybe every day?) they had two vegan and gluten free soft serve flavors, but I was feeling boring and wanted to try the Camper without a chocolate overload or something else that might not match all the junk in it. (Junk as in junk food, not that it wasn't delicious.) As a whole, it was good, but the ice cream itself was surprisingly weak. People were super nice behind the counter, so that made the difference. Yay, helpfulness! It's as though I've never ordered an ice cream before, and I hadn't done so at this place, so I really needed an adult! (Again, lots of choices and nuances.) The interior of the ice cream counter is clean, colorful and classic. [Skip this explanation about their name and a bit of a rant or tangent from me as well (not about this place at all, but a rant in general): "Minnesota Nice" refers to passive-aggressive behavior, or not nice, in other words, just as "Minnesota Spicy" means not spicy at all. So MN Nice as a name of a place might not be the best choice, even as proud as some of us might be of being Minnesota nice and Minnesota everything and where all the children are above average and all the ethereal, escapist radio-days dreamlike myth gone wrong later on.] Anyway, I would return to MN Nice. Okay I have always LOVED this place. When I went to the UMN, I truly would go here on a weekly basis. I didn't go here for a few months since I was away and was looking forward to going back since I missed their ice cream. However, I came by here today and was disappointed to see that they had made their sizes smaller and kept their prices the same (or maybe it just felt smaller...but a friend of mine also thought the sizes shrunk). This hard to find shop is a nice addition to the sweet-tooth scene and will appeal to many with the exception of true ice-cream purists. Located in the rear of an old industrial building, I had a hard time finding it at night. The address is 807 Broadway NE and as you travel on Broadway, the building looms in front of you with a large "807" on the east side of it. If you turn there, you will be rewarded with going behind some industrial buildings with historic cobblestones and train tracks but no ice cream shop. In fact, the area looks more like a good place for a body dump than an ice cream treat. However, go to the west side of the building past the brewpub and turn into the parking lot and buried on the first floor with little signage you will find this gem. They are open until 9pm and the first thing I noticed when I entered was that there really was no ice cream to be seen. This was confusing and it took a bit for me to understand that the focus here is not really the ice cream but the stuff that they adorn their ice cream with. In fact, the ice cream only comes in 2 flavors (vanilla and chocolate) and comes out of a soft-serve machine (ok 3 flavors if you count in vanilla/chocolate swirl which is a possibility). Also, the ice cream tastes really more like ice milk and not true ice cream. If you are a purist and demand craft made, hand churned, high butterfat style ice cream, you might have a stroke when you walk in and see the soft-serve pull handle machine. But, if you can get past this, the magic starts to happen. There are a lot of toppings that can be put on. Some are quite imaginative such as bacon and edible glitter. Others are typical such as puppy chow, butterfinger bits, and cookie dough. What really stood out to me in all of this was the cookie dough. It was fresh, buttery, and a rich mouth bomb of pure raw cookie dough. I came here mainly for my family and I am not a big carb person but this might have just been a game changer for me. Things are not cheap here, it is difficult to find and it was not crowded (granted, it was snowing and they were getting ready to close when I got there) so I am a little worried that they are not going to have a sustainable business model but for now, I'm buying what they are selling. IT'S SOFT SERVE. Ok, nobody seems to be talking about that, and I think it is very important to know that this is not what I consider real ice cream. So grumpy old me is like this is the most expensive yogurt lab place I've ever been to. But my kids...well of course they loved it! This place is a fun treat for your eyes and your stomach! Beautiful, bright, colorful decor and the most whimsical "extra" ice cream combinations and toppings. Overall, a fun and "instagrammable" experience, though I wish their cones were tastier and better formed - while mine was quite photogenic, it tasted pretty soggy and leaked barely a minute after starting it. One of my favorite food trucks has their own cafe! First off, this place is a little hard to find. Not a lot of signage pointing in their direction, but once you do find them you'll be glad you did. There are some excellent topping choices: cereal, popcorn, brownies, bananas...loads of them. I know this place started as an ice cream truck last year, tried catching it all summer! Super excited they have a permanent home! Stopped in during the grand opening a few weeks ago. Thought the line would be out the door but I was actually 3rd in line at the time I arrived (that's a good thing, from a customer side of view & I know they did well opening weekend. :) ) It's soft serve ice cream (vanilla, chocolate or swirl) but a long list of toppings! The list of toppings was actually very impressive. I just got glitter (again, being basic). Super pretty! When I posted a picture of my ice cream on social media I got questions about what the glitter taste like or if it's textured. The answer is it taste like nothing, and no texture. However I did end up with glitter all over my face & car but I love glitter so it's all good! Waffle cones were tie-dyed and super cute! Also chocolate at the bottom of cone (to keep the ice cream from leaking out) was a nice surprise! It was pretty pricey for a soft serve waffle cone but I LOVE Ice cream & will obviously pay whatever. The atmosphere is small, very decorated & cute! Great customer service! MN Nice Cream is a super, insta-worthy ice cream shop. They have colorful menus, walls, decor, and ice cream. They have soft serve as their base (vanilla, twist, or chocolate). Then they have four waffle cones to choose from (you can get it in a cup too). They have tons of toppings and sauces. You can pick three of them if you want to customize your cone. I got the cheesecake, cookie dough, and peanut butter with their vanilla soft serve in their original waffle cone. The cheesecake chunks were larger than "normal" bite-sized ones at ice cream places and weren't frozen like most other places. Their cookie dough was also larger chunks, good and classic. Peanut butter came out in a swirl around the ice cream...pretty delicious and creamy. Bonus: I added gold edible glitter too (which was free). Overall, I would give them a 3.5/5 for taste and 4.5/5 for experience/decor. They have plenty of outdoor seating (shared with a neighboring brewery), and there is also parking right outside (lot) so that made things convenient. Despite the long line, service was fast, the employees were friendly, I didn't feel rushed trying to put in my order, and as the photos clearly show, the artistic creations are prepared very beautifully. Food - 4 stars. For soft serve ice cream, it's pretty tasty. Compared to your run of the mill fast food or carnival or buffet soft serve, it tastes better, but not $$$ better. Which brings me to the price point. Price - 2 stars. I never imagined I would pay $8+ for some fancy dressed up soft serve, but I guess my imagination isn't as insane as Katie's. You got me. I had to try one of your soft serve masterpieces. The pictures make you drool like Pavlov's dogs but unless you're a soft serve fanatic, you'll realize that you've been salivating over just that. Soft serve. Then the disappointment kicks in after you get your beautifully decorated cone, as you frantically try to lick as fast as you can because it's dripping all over you because why? It's just soft serve - and unlike real ice cream, it melts much faster. A small size in a dish or waffle cone will cost ya $4. But you gotta put some fun toppings on right? Why else would you pay $4 for soft serve? So you can dress it up with some puppy chow or gummy worms obviously. Each topping is an additional $0.50 so it starts to add up if you try to get too creative. However, you can order one of their specials like the "fun cone" or "gone bananas" which have multiple toppings for $7. I wanted to add to my fun creation and decided to choose my own toppings on a "fancy" cone, which was another additional $1. All in all, it was a fun treat and a good experience, but next time I'll head on over to a "real" ice cream parlor for some "real" ice cream. MN nice cream was a bucket list stop for me after seeing all the pictures on Instagram and YELP.. but I was very disappointed. The photos looked great and the aesthetic was definitely there.. but the actual product did not live up to the expectation or price. My signature "fancy cone" ended up around $7, the ice cream options were limited to soft serve, and the toppings were average at best. The line for this ice cream shop was a 20 minute wait, but the staff did keep it moving and were very friendly. I would give it 2 stars because of the awesome staff, but I would definitely go to another ice cream shop next time. I was drawn here by numerous Instagram pictures I'd seen that made this look like an overall fun food *experience.* While this was a fun trip, I'd probably only go here with first-timers and wouldn't make this a regular trip. I had the Cookie Monster Cone ($7) with a chocolate/sprinkle dip cone and I felt I paid a fair price for what I got. I didn't eat dinner before coming here (oops, don't tell my mom!) and was not hungry for dinner when I left. I heard the cookie dough was good-- and good is for sure an understatement. I'm a cookie dough fiend and this was 10/10. That with the caramel made me think I'd for sure be back. Sadly, the ice cream which is the base is very below average. To me, it's worse than McDonald's soft serve. It was basically frozen milk, but the toppings distract from the low quality ice cream. Overall atmosphere seemed like it was catered towards middle school and high school children. Maybe it seemed that way with the 12+ kids that were standing in the already pretty small building, making it hard to feel comfortable.
