We arrived at 5ish and the nice woman with the broken foot checked us in. That was all pretty smooth. It is close to the ocean. Parking is fine. They had board games, ice water,coffee and some snacks in the lobby along with an ice and vending machine. It was quiet the night we stayed with few guests. There is a restaurant on site that serves beer, paninis, and flatbreads, along with other bar type snacks. The rooms are well appointed with a tv,microwave,fridge,fireplace. No a/c but we didn't need it. Beds have piles of fluffy pillows. There was a coffee maker,coffee and tea, toiletries, and plenty of fresh towels. In the morning there is free breakfast so we grabbed juice, yogurt, and honey buns. There was also fruit, hardboiled eggs, some other simple things to eat This was a very good place to stay. We would stay again.

Some things I think others looking up this place will find useful:…read more *Each unit has entrances on both sides of the building, one facing the bay and one facing the other side. So: no need to worry about getting stuck with a unit that does not face the bay. *There are only 18 units in the whole hotel, each of them the same size: one bedroom, one bathroom, a living room with an electric fireplace, and a kitchenette. We always seek out places with kitchens or kitchenettes so we can cook in our unit are won't have to eat out every meal. One slight word of caution, though: these kitchenettes have a microwave and a stove top but no oven; and the refrigerator is pretty small. *The living room couch is also a hideabed, so the rooms technically sleep four each. There is a TV in both the living room and the bedroom. *The view of the bay is NOT a view of a beach, but there are some very positive things about this. First, the nightly rates are reasonable regardless of the time of year. Second, beyond a grassy area in front of the motel are tide flats, which fill up with water twice every 24 hours, at high tide. It's really fun to see the change when you're paying attention. Beyond the tide flats is the man-made Shoalwater Bay Berm, created to save Tokeland from the long term effects of increasingly severe weather events. The tide flats area between the hotel and the berm, that gets filled with water, is called Empire Spit. Google the area's tides for the day(s) you are there and you will know when to look for when the tide flats fill with sea water, as it doesn't stay full for very long. *The hotel is owned by the Shoalwater Bay Tribe and is on their land, as is the Shoalwater Bay Casino (the smallest casino I have ever been in). If you get a Players Club Card from the casino, which you do not have to do any gambling in the casino to get, you can use it to get 10% off your hotel booking. *The hotel has an outdoor pool that is heated, and a hot tub that is protected from the elements by a clear dome. There were no storms the two nights we stayed there, but I bet it would be fun to watch one from that hot tub. There is also a communal kitchen space for larger parties that can be booked for an extra fee. *I have seen other reviews complain about the lack of regular housekeeping, but this was not a big deal to us. And if you need fresh linens or toiletries, all you have to do is ask and the incredibly friendly staff will happily hook you up. In short, Tradewinds on the Bay is a modest place to stay that is also quite the hidden gem. We stayed in a hotel room this visit but as I said, we fell in love with this hotel and have already made reservations for memorial day weekend in one of the newly remodeled condos. The grounds are far enough from the road that the noise of traffic is nonexistent. Only the sounds of relaxation and the ocean in the background. There is plenty of parking. A Pickle Ball Court. A Dog Area with Bags. Even a restaurant called "Dark Harbour." I love a good pirate bar! With free breakfast and a restaurant on site, your set up for a relaxing time. Usually "breakfast" is yogurt and cereal I don't like. They had that here as well BUT they also have a lot of breakfast choices. My favorite was sausage and gravy over fresh biscuits with sausage links on the side. There was cheese omelet, pastries, bagels, cereal, coffee, tea, juices and some other things. Really nice set up serving from 6 - 9:30am. My Mother in law can get up and get breakfast without having to wait on us. We had a nice time at breakfast. We even met another family and their son Sam. There is a nice grass area in the back. Seating areas, Gas BBQ's, Corn Hole games and a nice paved walking trai. There are beach bikes the hotel let's guests use and nearby you can rent electric bikes. The ocean is only a few minutes walk from the hotel. We walked down to the beach and stood in awe of the vast sands and waves gently rolling in. Downtown Long Beach is within a few miles of the hotel so there is plenty to do or you can do my favorite vacation idea... "Nothing." Not really nothing but sitting on the deck or taking naps with the sun on my face is my idea of vacation.

It is very accessible from Portland and the drive there is beautiful, and when you arrive at your destination you immediately feel at peace. Brian and Linda do a great job of making you feel welcome. We brought our own snacks and had a picnic in the gazebo and enjoyed the view of the river, which is so wide at that point that it almost gives the visual of being at the ocean as ships rolled by. We stayed in the Hummingbird Room which has a very comfortable bed and a wonderful view out of the window. The rates are very affordable and include breakfast - Brian is a great cook and they offer several meal options. We added the firewood package and were so glad we did, as I type this I wish I could be back there next to the fire while looking at the river. They only have two rooms so if you went with some friends you would have the whole place to yourselves. This really is a hidden gem and I highly recommend making the trip while you can.
