My first time at Moby Dick's Oyster Bar & Grill was an overall great experience. It is a classic bar and restaurant setup with main bar seating and tables all around. It isn't huge inside but they use the space so wisely. The kitchen is open to the bar so you can see and hear all the amazing things happening back there which really adds to the local neighborhood vibe. The bartenders there are very sweet and attentive, they help bring the whole experience there to 5 stars. I came on a Wednesday for the $17.99 lobster roll special and it was easily one of the best I've ever had. It is a quarter pound of lobster and you get actual lumps of claw and meat rather than the shredded stuff some other places serve. The butter it's sautéed in is seasoned delicately to accentuate the fresh lobster instead of covering up the taste. The portion was surprisingly large and it comes on a fresh bun that is lightly buttered and toasted. It even comes with a little cup of extra butter which I totally slathered on because I love butter! Every bite was so fresh and soft. The roll comes with fries and I did the optional $5 upcharge for the lobster bisque. That was also the best I've ever had because I've never seen bisque with such large chunks of lobster in it. It was just crazy good. Everything was well worth the price and I'd honestly come back even on days when it's not a special. They have something going on every night like the $9.99 burger and fries on Mondays, so that will definitely be my next reason to visit. I will be back for sure! read more

The brioche toasted roll, hand picked lobster meat and the seasoned fries are too hard to pass on especially for $18 on Wednesdays. Last but not least. Honestly the food was not impressive. I ordered the bread crumb covered baked shrimp which were served poached in liquid, no breadcrumbs or baking to be found. My guy ordered the lobster bisque which came in a coffee mug without much lobster and the fried shrimp which had such a greasy breading it had to be removed. BUT.... They comped my dinner AND gave us a gift card. So coodos to the manager who stood up and did the right thing! I will definitely come back and give them a second chance. I love my Wiggles and my Rake! This is a small bar with a few dining tables both indoors and outside. We came on a Friday and the bar was full of happy patrons. Our very attentive waitress came and took our orders. Okay ...saw the reviews here and had to come for the oysters and crab dip. Got an Uber from our hotel and guess what? They were out of oysters, crab dip and shrimp cocktail! The bartender said they had a busy weekend - it was Tuesday? Well, we decided on the lobster roll and it did not disappoint. So full of lobster and the bun was perfect. The bartender wasn't very friendly. We had to ask several times for drinks and there were only four other people in the place. Luckily, Sam took over the bar and was terrific. What a find! When I travel for business, I always head to Yelp to find a place to eat. This was my first time in the New Haven area so I was searching for seafood. Moby Dick's is a cozy little place with a great vibe. Courtney the bartender was very welcoming and steered me straight to the lobster roll (Wednesday night special) and I was craving clam chowder because it was chilly. Both meal items were fabulous. A generous amount of exceptional lobster and perfectly toasted roll with just the right amount of butter. Moby Dick's Oyster Bar & Grill is located in an unassuming small storefront on Campbell Avenue in West Haven. They serve a creative variety of flatbreads, signature cocktails and charcuterie boards. We had had a late lunch so we only ordered drinks but the food we saw looked awesome. I am definitely looking forward to trying the unique combinations of flatbreads. One group of customers had ordered a tower of shells with oysters, clams, shrimp and crab meat which made for an impressive presentation. Another table was having clam chowder and a lobster bisque. Sure, West Haven is on the ocean, but I don't really think of it as a seafood spot for whatever reason. I was proven wrong when I found this little spot downtown. It took $1 raw oysters to pull me in (they don't do this all the time, so follow them on whatever the kids are using these days), and like the fish on the menu, I was hooked. The place is a little small, but getting a seat is worth it. The drinks are strong and expertly made, the kitchen is fast, and seafood is fresh and served with many homemade sauces. We only had the raw oysters this time, but in perusing the cooked and raw items, I couldn't find anything I disliked. Fresh seafood, well prepared, at fair prices? The lobster bisque mirrored the crap dip, consisting of again a lot of meat and loads of flavor. The gentlemen next to us indulged in the raw bar(if that's your thing) and would stop raving about how fresh and huge the oysters were. I honestly can't wait to go back with more room to eat so that I can try other items. Josie, our bartender, while in training, was pleasant and engaging. The chefs were also quick, cleanly, and personable. Lastly, the owner, Nick..I cannot rave enough about him and his style of ownership. He's attentive, a conversationalist, and an all around great owner. He made sure that not only his customers were taken care of but also all of his staff who seemed to adore him. With this place checking all of the boxes that they did I am surprised they are such a hidden gem. We went on a Friday night and the the place was not very busy. The bar was loud and crowded, but no one was at the tables. We got a beer and placed our order. It took about an hour for us to get our food. Someone apologized to us, but there wasn't a lot of food going out to people, just drinks, so I'm unsure where the delay came from. The food was not great, but expensive. I got the drunken clams linguine. The clams were chewy, there was barely any sauce, and there were no tomatoes to be found. My partner's burger was fine, but he ordered a side of garlic mozzarella flatbread which came out with no mozzarella. After bringing it to our server's attention we did get one that actually had mozzarella. We got the bill and were surprised at how expensive such subpar food was. Very small restaurant with 4-5 tables total and about eight bar seats. Very slow service and the food is mediocre at best. Came in Easter Sunday and experience was miserable. Ordered oysters Rockefeller (they had a piece of bacon on top of them lol) and the fried dumplings. Dumplings were ok. Oysters were awful. That took about 25 minutes to get. Our lunch took another 45 minutes. For three fried fish sandwiches that looked like they came frozen from Cisco. Fries were basic frozen garbage as well. I can't believe it took almost two hours to eat some fried dumplings and a fried fish sandwich lol. Also took about 15 minutes to get our check. I would never eat here again. read more

FINALLY a good restaurant on Campbell Ave. If, like me, you've been mourning West End Bistro for years since its closure I have great news for you. Chef Jeff is back in action making some of the best food in Connecticut. I've had a couple visits and can honestly say every single menu item is top-notch. Always rotating in new oyster specials. Staff is immaculate and really understand how to make people feel comfortable.
