I think there is much to be desired at this establishment. The scallops I had were not overcooked, but there were some hard bits on top of them that I thought was either bacon or pancetta, tried chewing them but they were hard as rock. The green sauce underneath didn't add much to the dimensions of the dish. The scallops were quite salty as well. The smoked tri tip was lukewarm when served. You would've expected more since it came in that mini cast iron Plate. The black pepper sauce was unremarkable. And the shishito pepper barely cooked. Lovely! We were there in the morning on New Year's Day which was a Sunday. They were having a breakfast buffet which we happily participated in. Not a cloud in the sky and the views were spectacular! The views are worth the price of admission, which, since we weren't staying at the hotel, was $30 per person. The buffet was delicious, with all you can drink coffee, juices, and water, as well as all you eat breakfast fixings, such as custom-made omelettes, scrambled eggs, pancakes, sausage, bacon, pastries, fruits, you name it! So very close but sadly no cigar. The views are stunning and the food was for the most part good. The service was pleasant enough but not entirely competent. Maybe with a little training???? This was an expensive meal as we expected but the experience was not inline with the premium price. To start with the brightness of the room took away from what could have been a stately ambiance. Dimmer lighting and a candle on the table would have made a difference. The menus were stained and inaccurate -- "ignore this wine list, The real one is on this sheet". I expect this in a pub but not here. We ordered appetizers and deserts to share -- but were given no small plates. When we asked for plates, the response was courteous but they never arrived. We ended up "borrowing" them from the table next to ours. We ordered the blueberry crisp for dessert -- and there was only a hint of a crisp. Went there for a brunch. We came a little late and the crowd was smaller. Food was still good and plentiful. The spread was really nice and the various stations were laid out. I particularly liked the salads and the spread of breads was great . Egg stations were a hit and the selection of cooked food was also good. Overall a good experience and a good view read more

Very basic fine dining experience here but for the price, view, and an app that was nothing but perfection, I'll give them the positive review. Despite being extremely late to my reservation due to a snow storm I was seated almost immediately and the rare view during the storm was worth it. Our server was very friendly, none of the staff rush you to leave as their restaurant closes at 10:00pm . I even saw a couple walk in around 9:50pm and they weren't treated any differently. Much respect for that as that's how fine dining should be. The one thing that really stood out was the fried oysters app. The oysters were light fried and coated with panko. Then had the slighted touch of lemon and I believe there was some dill thrown on there as well. It was perfect. In other words it was fried nicely and the oyster was as close to being eaten fresh as it could have been despite it being fried. If you don't understand what I mean, I'm basically saying that it tasted like a fresh raw oyster with coasting, it was tender as ever with a light and not greasy crust on the outside. It didn't tasted fried but somehow it was. Very good app, highly recommend, I'll remember that one. They also had a very nice flatbread app that was basically like a pizza but it was good! Had sausage, spinach, cheese and sauce. As for my fillet mignon, it was just basic and boring. Slightly dry though they cooked it medium. A little salty, then the French Fries didn't help that case either. Not worth $32. Everything here classifies this place in the fine dining category except the fake candles and some cheap, boring options on the menu but at least they got something for everyone I guess. A great view and fancy dinner doesn't have to come at a high cost I guess. Other than the steak and the candles, everything was great. Solid option here, I've heard good things about to their breakfast and brunch too. I hope to try it one day. read more

For convenience and after a long day of travel to get here, I joined some co-workers here for dinner at John Davenports located on the nineteenth floor of the Omni Hotel, where we were all staying. In the past I have had mixed feelings about hotel restaurants. But John Davenports may have renewed my faith that hotel restaurants don't have to be ordinary. First I need to mention the friendly greeting when we entered that made me feel welcome. The service was first rate throughout dinner including not letting our water glasses get empty. The menu is not too lengthy but all of the listed items were appealing. In the end, by some strange coincidence, we all ordered the Diver Scallops & Shrimp; that turned out to be an excellent choice. The Scallops were perfectly seared and tender and the shrimp were done just right! I like to try various restaurants, but I would certainly be happy to do repeats at John Davenports. read more

At 8 on a Sunday night, we were tired and headed upstairs. We should have gone to Chipotle at the end of the block. It was so bad, irs not worth the time it would take to write a proper review. Still, here are some highlights from our server and the meal. "Our Off the bone salmon..." When she brought rolls in Marshall's basket and asked what kind of roll we wanted, and followed up with, "Oh, I'm not leaving the basket. I'm just giving you one." Our burger is two patties, like McDonald's Big Mac ... The menu says locally sourced when we can. I asked what was local the server said, 'Honey from our roof. We don't really do the local thing. I don't know why it says that." Later I inquired about a dish whose description says honey. "Our honeys not in that. Actually I don't know what our honey is in." I came here for what intended to be a brunch (but became a lunch) recently this winter - pretty awesome experience. Way better than your average hotel restaurant. 1. The view Amazing 360 degree of all of New Haven!!! and you can see the mountains and bridges beyond. 2. THE FOOD IS pretty awesome... - we ordered - lobster mac, fish and chips, and lobster roll. You can call it pub/bar food, but wow, they know how to do it right. I can taste the flavored pink sea salt on my fries and the freshness of the Georges bank cod (not all cod is made equal). Presentation was okay... but I was hungry - so who cares. BE WARNE D - portion sizes are one step below Texas sized (basically American) 3. The service - super friendly, caring, and delightful staff! 4. Try their drinks - I had the Arnold Palmer - delightful Why this place didn't get 5 stars... 1. Seriously, no breakfast/brunch options at 11AM? They only do brunch on weekends apparently. For a serious hotel restaurant, not having any semblance of brunch options on a major holiday is just disappointing. 2. The view at this upper floor hotel restaurant is spectacular - there's no denying that. (You get to see all of downtown New Haven and Yale university from a unique vantage point.) However, we found the service to be anything but... The hostess/waitress was rude and impatient, telling us off for "touching utensils we weren't using" that would "have to be replaced before the next set of diners sit down... because of health code." It felt as though we were treated this way because we looked our age (young) and weren't dressed up in cocktail attire like many of the older guests who eat here. We were shoo'd away to the bar lounge "with an even better view," as our waitress described it. The view at the bar lounge is of the I-95. -_- The prices at John Davenport's make you think you're dining in manhattan, but the food is not 5-star NYC quality. Giving two stars because of the redeeming cocktails and very knowledgeable and accommodating bartender. After our experience, I'd say come here for the bar and to peek at the view, not for the food. Avoid the rude hostess. Do yourself and your friends a favor and visit any of the much better restaurants just up the street. read more

I can't imagine why people are giving this less than 5 stars. However, when you read the less than stellar reviews, a lot seem like people that just have a general axe to grind. My wife and I both had shrimp and scallops, over a corn sauce that was out of this world. The service was stellar, and our waitress was attentive, polite and prompt. Everyone we came into contact with was pleasant. The views of New Haven are breathtaking, and there doesn't seem to be a bad seat in the house. Its pricy, but you're paying for higher end food at the top of one of the nicer hotels in New Haven, so if you're surprised by that, maybe you should re-evaluate how you look for restaurants. Disappointing dining experience. Went to JD's for a Birthday Dinner with my wife. The hostess tried to squeeze us into a tight table next to other groups (mind you, there were plenty of spacious tables away from crowded groups). After asking to change, we sat and were surprised overall how loud the room was (small dining space, open bar in the back). The food itself was just ok. Ordered the Ribeye, while cooked well, it was a bit chewey rather than tender. Also, the mashed potatoes were terrible, probably because it was mixed with overbearing Horseradish. What really ruined the experience was the loudness. There seemed to be groups of high school kids making loud noise in banquet halls on the 19th floor (this is part of the Omni Hotel). This ruined any type of romantic evening and we chose to rush out after the meal rather than enjoy ourselves to some dessert. First Impressions Count. My husband and I decided to head up to the 19th floor for drinks and a light dinner or maybe just appetizers since we had a very late lunch (at a time that would ordinarily be dinner if not for the time change). We're visiting New Haven from the West Coast and while that little factoid might otherwise seem irrelevant, in this case it means that it was too late for a big meal but not eating would not be a good idea. The "highly rated" restaurant on the top floor of one if the better hotels in New Haven seemed like a no-brainer. We initially decided to sit in the bar, but after cruising through it ascertained that there were no small tables available- just a long table that sits maybe 10. That seemed s little excessive for just the 2 of us so we approached the hostess to inquire about a table in the restaurant (we had noticed several empty tables as we walked past her to the bar a few minutes earlier). The first question out of her mouth was: "Are you going to actually eat dinner or just have drinks?" (Whaaaat???) We politely replied yes, drinks, and a light dinner or maybe some appetizers. At this point she directed us back to the bar because there were no available tables. My husband and I both turned and acknowledged the near empty restaurant. Our non-verbals were apparently clear because she told us that she had several reservations that were going to fill the restaurant up by 9 PM, 45 minutes from the present time. So we went to the bar and sat at the huge long table for 10 and waited for someone to acknowledge us. After several minutes a waiter came. We asked for a wine list and a menu. He dropped of the wine menu (not impressive) and no regular menu. Recall that our main goal was to eat a light late night meal. After several more minutes of no service, the hostess came to tell us that the busboy had cleared 2 tables so miraculously there was now a table for us. This is as we were getting ready to leave. Additionally, this is the same woman who, 10-15 minutes earlier had drilled us as to our intentions to eat a full meal and had explicitly told us that she couldn't sit us in the restaurant because there were so many reservations that we couldn't be accommodated. I chose John Davenport as the restaurant for my summer camp staff's final dinner. I had never been here before so it was worth checking out. I called to make the reservation and chose the pre-fixe menu. I also urged them to have a regular menu for my staff who were vegan/vegetarian. When we got there, we had more people than the 15 person reservation so they added more chairs to the table. The waitress who waited on us was quite snippy and not so pleasant. Some of my staff is somewhat younger (early 20s) and her attitude towards them was off-putting. I didn't like the pre-fixe menu so I went for a Caesar salad which was great. I got a side of mashed potatoes too which were delicious. As the food was coming out, the waitress went over to our director (who she didn't know was the director) and said, "you made the reservation correct?" and my director stated that she didn't and I did. I found it interesting that the waitress assumed the only white woman at the table made the reservation and that she was the vegan in the group, which she wasn't. Anyways, the waitress was just too snippy for me in a back-handed polite way. Not sure how to explain it but she turned me off. So two stars it is Davenport! read more

I'd really like to give this experience a 2.5 review, as the food was pretty good. I took my girlfriend here for Valentine's day. I also went here last year for the same thing. The two experiences were night and day. I don't know if they had a change in management or something. First off, the hostess was cold and not very welcoming. We were carted off to a back room and sat at what seemed to be a cheap fold up table that wobbled. Instead of flowers on the table, they folded a dinner napkin to look like a flower. The definitely were understaffed, and it seemed like they had their breakfast waitresses serving. They had tacky green shirts on and name tags. No fine dining server on the fucking planet should be wearing a name tag. The waitstaff obviously had no idea about fine dining timing. My waitress was constantly apologizing for how slow the service was, but it was fine. I was there to have a long, conversation filled dinner with my girlfriend. The waitress was obviously used to slinging eggs at lightning speed to people rushing to work. She was nice, and the her service would have been very good in another environment. I feel bad writing this even, because she was really, really nice. But her constant apologizing and overly attentive service was a big distraction. As a former waiter myself, I think that there's an art to fining dining service, and part of that art is being just attentive enough, but also knowing how to make it seem like you're not there at the same time. The food was pretty good. It was what I expected. But I didn't choose John Davenport's for the food. It's not even close to the best restaurant in town food wise, but view and ambiance are perfect for a night like Valentine's day. It's unfortunate this was pretty much ruined by the service, which was more akin to diner service than what should be expected at a fine dining restaurant on a romantic holiday. Nice views and nice dinner. If, like me, you're hesitating on trying this place because of some of the reviews, I recommend you go and see for yourself. We almost didn't go because of some of the negatives and also because we were going to a concert later and didn't want to really dress for dinner. The online photos are pretty elegant but casual dress was pretty much the standard when we were there mid week. First the service was very good. Our waiter was knowledgeable about the offerings and took good care of us. Everything was just fine. The food was also very good, especially for a hotel restaurant. We had deviled eggs, grilled flatbread and artisinal cheese for apps. For dinner we had short ribs, a pasta special and the salmon. All were very good. Afterward we went to the bar for a couple drinks. The service there was extremely slow. The people were nice but they didn't have enough staff on so everything was backed up. Management was nowhere to be seen and the poor guy was doing everything he could to keep people happy. If I had one knock on this place it would be that whoever was managing the front of the house didn't have a handle on what was going on in the bar and didn't step in to reallocate resources to help get through the crunch. Here are my tips for your first time here: 1) Make an earlier reservation so you can enjoy a better view. There are no bad views but it's nice to be right at the window looking over the city. 2) Portions are on the smallish side so enjoy an appetizer beforehand if you like to eat. 3) Park in the hotel garage under the building. They partially validate so it will cost a little less than other lots and its very secure. We'll be back for sure. There are no shortage of great restaurants in New Haven, but John Davenport's will be a regular stop for us! read more

First time here, and it was a great experience all except for one thing. We got the artisanal cheese board which was outstanding. Drinks and wine were delicious. Lobster mac and cheese was great. However, my girlfriend and I both ordered Filet. She ordered medium rare, and I ordered medium. Hers came out medium well, and mine came out medium well-well done. This was disappointing, but the steak still tasted good. The waiter made up for it with giving us the first round of drinks on the house, so that made us very happy. But the food spread was great. They had an Omlette station. The service including the host at the door was pretty exceptional. The view was nice despite the rains. All in all a decent experience. The person reviewing the Omni first had called it "ridiculously swanky"... It depends on one's base of reference, but to me neither the hotel, nor the restaurant on its top floor can be described this way. "John Davenport's" IS, however, a fun place to go for brunch. The $19.95 price is not something I would be willing to spend every single weekend, but for occasional (possibly celebratory) visits and for the food you get, it's worth it. There is a standard hot-breakfast bar, including a decent real-egg omelet station. Some of the meats they offer are advertised to be from local no-hormones, no-antibiotics, natural-feed animals (I had the bacon - tasted great). There are your average cold cereals selection and the varieties of milk we've come to expect from any decent breakfast-serving place (in cute old-fashioned ceramic bottles); pretty good fresh fruits; most ordinary pastries and a couple of kinds of bread and bagels which you can toast yourself. (We didn't have waffles, but I think those were pre-made or at least made for you. I did not see pancakes.) My favorite section was the salad / cold antipasti bar, mostly because the smoked salmon it offered was fabulous and plentiful. The seemingly large choice of petits fours belied their pitiful taste. Coffee (very good) and orange juice are included in the price; cocktails are additional. If you sit in the front/lower section, you get nice views of the Green and a lot of the Yale architectural sights, as well as a slew of proud Yale parents with their offspring on the neighboring tables. read more

Looking at the reviews, i'm not sure if other people are way too pretentious, or i just caught them on a good day. There is literally nothing that I can pick out as a negative aspect to my visit. The restaurant was clean, impeccably clean. I was greeted with a smile as soon as i stepped off the elevator. The waitress brought me a water glass, and made sure to check it for spots before pouring. She promptly made her recommendations and told me the specials. I was delivered bread & butter as soon as i put in my order. No detail went overlooked. The mussels appetizer was delicious. The broth with white wine, garlic, pine nuts, fresh parsley & tomato was good not only on the mussels, but on the fresh baked bread that was brought to the table. ($8) I ordered the scallops for my entree and they were beautifully presented and expertly seared. The julienne apple not only served as a beautiful garnish, but provided the needed acidity to balance the buttery flavor of the scallop. Overall an excellent dish. ($27) I was too full to partake in dessert, but i'm sure they're just as amazing as the rest of the food. We had Sunday AM brunch here during a local staycation/mother-daughter outing. Everything was perfect! Staff was so attentive. One of the saving graces of Davenport's is the view. Come here during the day for lunch. This place on the 19th floor of the Omni and looks down over the New Haven Green. It is an impressive view (less so in the evening) and can make a nice impression if that is what you are shooting for. Adjacent to Davenport's is also the hotel's bar, Bar19. It is small. The bar itself probably can seat about 7 to 10 folks and there is a single table which can likely seat another 5. Most notably you lose the view of New Haven as Davenport's windows are blocked. There were some inventive cocktails which pulled up just shy of what you might expect at 116 Crown but if that is what you are looking for I would wholeheartedly recommend that you just go to 116 Crown. On the whole it seems as if John Davenport's is just a notch above phoning it in, which is a shame given the potential for this place. I would recommend dropping in for a lunch just for the novelty factor of the view but beyond that there are just far too many exciting options elsewhere. read more

Took my wife to John Davenport's for our 11th anniversary on a Sunday evening. The service was absolutely impeccable, as was the view (from the top of the Omni Hotel). However, the focus was definitely on the view -- and not the food. I'm not saying the food was BAD, but neither my wife nor myself found it special. My husband and I went here on Monday. The receptionist was nice as well as the waitress. The waitress was very nice and accommodating. Since there were not much of people in the restaurant she let us moved to a bigger table. Just a note: the two person table was really small. My husband booked this restaurant mainly because of the view, however, it was so dark that we didn't see anything. We were expecting that we would see a lot of Christmas lights but we were disappointed. We concluded that it is better to make a reservation during day time if you want to see a view. We had grilled flatbread for starter. I liked it, but my husband wasn't a fan of it. I ordered NY strip and I liked it. My husband ordered candillo de salmon which was not part of their main menu, it was part of the flavors of the world = destination chile menu which they were offering for limited time only, in the end he didn't like it. I tasted it and it was a bit salty for my taste. We ordered warm brownie sundae for dessert but the brownie wasn't warm at all, it was cold as the ice cream. Very bipolar experience at this place. Breakfast was awesome! The buffet was amazing, the fresh fruit offered was so fresh and delicious. Omelette station was equipped with everything. So many delicious pastries and breads. The views in the AM were nice and the buffet was really nicely stocked and rotated. Dinner was not good. Shrimp were rubbery, the scallops were just ok, the vegetables were not cooked properly. The waiter was very nice but very slow: only did one task at a time and it was a 2 hour ordeal from seating to check signing. The brownie dessert was rock hard and inedible. Bummer. The warm molten chocolate cake was overbaked, so there was no molten chocolate. That's kind of a deal killer. Nice views, that's really the high point here. Very good food HORRIBLE service. This restaurant has a lovely view of the city of New Haven. We were sat in a booth that felt like we were sitting on a living room couch. Our bodies sank in the chair away from the table. Basically we were sitting at an awkward angle to have breakfast. We waited 10 minutes for a Server to approach and take our order. The dining room was not very busy. Finally the Hostess doubling as a waitress approaches and told us "I can help you while I am here ". We were then served coffee by a very nice young man who also gave us water. No one ever came back to ask us if we wanted more coffee until we waved down the manager. We waited for for our food for 20 min. (Eggs). Our food arrived I noticed I didn't have a place setting or napkin. As I sat waiting for a server to come back my food was getting cold. My husband jumped up and started looking around for a clean napkin. He couldn't find one. I shared a napkin with my son and used his fork when he left. The food and the view are wonderful! My suggestion is that they train the staff better. We are in New Haven often and we will never go back. read more

I then ordered their grill cheese sandwich with more upscale cheeses than your average grilled cheese and it was horrible. It was to rich and pungent. The cherry compote which accompanied the grill cheese did not taste well at all! It tasted like it was sour and possibly old. I also ordered a drink from the bar, a Long Island iced tea and the bartender deliberately omitted the cola from the drink, I had him fix it. Here's the thing about this place: it's a fancy schmancy, nice restaurant. Anything your order here will be expensive and in small portions, but very, very tasty. I had a steak and some red wine and the food and drink was stellar, but I was ready to eat again immediately after the meal. Granted, I'm not someone who is satisfied with smaller portions. The views of New Haven are stellar, the service exceptional, and the taste divine, but I'm only giving it 3 stars because for the same cost I could get my fix on at a sushi bar, be more full, and therefore, happier. :) If you're looking for a good place to hold a fancy business meeting with Sir Jebornius Dalrockey or the your local magistrate, or propose to the love of your life, this is your place. Otherwise, go across the street to the Temple Grill or Prime 16 and spend a quarter of the cost for twice the food. read more
