I was so excited to visit this store for the first time, but sadly, it will be my last. When I walked in, I was immediately drawn to the back wall with their higher-end raw books, but was shocked to see multiple Amazing Spider-Man #1s priced at $80!! Folks, this is a $25 book all day on eBay. The closer I looked around the store, the trend unfortunately continued. Every single book I saw was 100-300% over FMV. I love this place! First of all, the customer service is amazing! You can go in and ask for anything, and even if they don't have it, they will track it down for you. Also, Jesse is amazing. He learned my name after just a couple visits, and greeted me every time I came in. I initially came in looking for Doctor Who comics, and he brought me right to them and got me started. A month later, he calls me to tell me someone gave him about 50 old issues of Doctor Who Magazine, and wants to know if I would like them! After being there just once! I arrived at their Crystal Lake store today at 11:20 am, twenty minutes after they were to be open. The door was locked so I called them to see if somebody was inside. Somebody from their Algonquin store answered and when I asked if they were open, the guy literally gave me a smart ass answer and said "I'm standing in it so we must be." Who talks like that to a customer? I told him that I was at their Crystal Lake location, and he said that the employee at that store had tire issues so he might be late, and told me he'll call me back after he found out what was going on. I sat in my car for like five minutes then left. The guy from Algonquin called me back and told me that the employee had left the store to get lunch and would be back. So apparently he hadn't even begun his shift but left to get lunch? They wasted my time since I drove all the way from Carpentersville. I was looking for a certain Spawn cover and really wanted it right away but I looked and found it on Ebay anyway. This company is unprofessional and if I could give them zero stars I would. Gonna be hard to find a better local comic shop than this one. Tons of back issues and completed sets for visitors but if your in the area this is the place to shop. Great website that lets you manage your shortlist really well. Shows future issues that you can pre-order as well as variants. You get an email every Tuesday about what is available for you to pick up that you ordered. Open late on Wednesday's so you can stop by after work. Best part though is Jesse, the owner. He will take care of you and help you find great comics to read. It's a great place to stop in every week. Very nice to hear your name called and greeted when you walk in the door. read more

This little store is an unpresuming place when you first drive up. On the inside, it's a lot larger in appearance and open plan, giving it a welcoming feel. Jesse is always there and perpetually ready to give a lending hand with your comic and figure needs. He jumped into conversation easily and we connected within minutes, like we'd known each other forever. He made my visit easy and pleasant, leaving a lasting impression that I've passed on to friends. Gaming happens there as well; give them a call to find out their schedule. A mini-fridge with geeky junk food is on-hand for those gruelling hours of gaming! At the end of my visit, he offered a generous military discount -- he was a Marine and we further bonded with our mutual military experiences. He's a genuine, down-to-earth guy. Definitely a go-to comic store, even if a bit out of the way of Chicago. read more

Below is my experience at the Crystal Lake location. I happened to spot the store on my way to a customer visit. So I decided to swing after the meeting while going back to work. It was on a Wednesday and late in the afternoon when I arrived. I was looking for the new comics when the manager said they were not out yet. I am thinking OK it's new release day and your shelves are empty. Keep in mind they are also closed Sunday to Tuesday and over three days of being closed they still do not have new releases on the shelves? The weirdest thing was the manager said "I will expedite them for you". He then moved one comic on the shelf turned towards me and stood there staring at me. An odd blank stare. So I took a look around hoping to see those new comics soon. I spotted a couple graphic novel that I wanted, but the new issue rack was still empty and the manager starting chatting it up with a kid so I left. He was not interested in putting out new releases, but wanted to talk about superhero movies. I needed to go back to work and could not wait any longer for the "expedited" new releases or for the manager to ring me out on the trades. So a few weeks later I see they are having a sale on trades for Free Comic Book Day. I wanted to give then another chance and the sale looked good. So maybe now will be a good time to grab those two trade, right? Well NO! I dove out of my way on the weekend to pick up the books. When I arrived the books were no where to be seen. Then the same weird manager shows up to ask if I needed help. I mentioned the trades and he said both copies are in back they are not for sale because of the sale. He said they only put out stuff that does not sell on the days they are having a sale. The good stuff they put in back. Can you imaging the work involved in that? So I said OK, well I am interested in the two books and would pay full price for them. I drove out of my way and was hoping to leave with something at this point sale or not. He would not sell them to me unless I come back on Wednesday...Oh and late in the day...maybe even Thursday would be better. My other option to buy them at the Algonquin store. Now I get it if he was the only person in the store, but he had another employee giving out the free comics (which was 2 per person, most stores I visit allow for 5 or more per person.) Why could he not tell that person to grab those two trades and sell them to me? So I left empty handed. I WILL NEVER GO TO EITHER STORE EVER AGAIN. I have visited many comic shop in my life. I mean all over the country and a couple in Europe. There are only two comic shops that come to mind that were just plain HORRIBLE! This is one of them. I have a friend in Crystal Lake that used to go to that store and I asked him about it. He said that manager is absent minded and stopped going there awhile ago. I don't blame him apparently the manager would order stuff and they would never arrive. He would then say "Oh sorry I forgot to place the order" So if you want to pick up new comics on new release day and/or pick up a couple of trades any day of the week, GO TO A DIFFERENT COMIC SHOP. If you want to get stared at, hear a grown man talk about the MCU to a young kid or visit a place where Expedited means nothing will happen, then visit this place YOU WILL LOVE IT! I ended up getting those trades at two different stores one in Palatine and the other In Glendale Heights. Check out those two shops, they can actually sell you comics on new release day too, pretty interesting concept! read more

I can't say enough good things about these guys. I go to the Crystal Lake location but they work together. The salesperson I work with at the Crystal Lake store is super knowledgeable, helpful, and they go way above and beyond to get just what my comic-starved, Wolverine-loving grandson in Morocco wants and they have great recommendations. I've missed the comics genre and had a couple of specialty requests for Christmas. Not only did the staff take time to walk me through the store to make sure I found what I needed, they called other comic book stores to help me find a couple of rare items that were out of print. I signed up on there website and have a couple of subscriptions for the store to hold comics as they are released so I don't almost miss out again. read more

Pre ordered the last Doctor Doom through them online, and received no updates or tracking number nearly 2 weeks after the issue was released. I just contacted the store to try and clear things up, and will update my review accordingly. So far, they stole my money. read more

I ordered a comic online and received a email that it was in. I drove over a hour just to find out that they did not qualify for the variant. I didn't receive any type of notification. Very poor business practice. I would recommend you look elsewhere for comics. read more

Modern age comics is the greatest Comic/Pop Culture shop I've ever been in. I love it there, the owner is amazing and always helps you when you need it. I go there every week on Wednesday for comic book day. If they don't have a comic at one location, there's another location close by that they can call to order the book for you. That's why modern age comics in Algonquin IL is the greatest comic shop I know of. read more

Great shop for any level of comic book fan. If you're new to the comic book world, the owner is very friendly and knowledgeable and not at all intimidating. If you're a hard core fan the owner is well read and always up for a chat and is willing to help you find whatever issue you're looking for. Frequent buyers can earn discounts, too!
