They lie about how much something will be and then last minute be like oh yeah the teeth cleaning will be 4500 and here is a long bill, then the bill will have repeating items for things i paid for already. Overall, very private equity pricing- nothing to do with the pets getting better service. I say try to go anywhere else but modern animal. They also just lack the professionalism- instead of saying upfront it's basically 3500 for each cat, they said it was 800 and then added bunch of stuff later on after i put my cats to sleep on gaba. Also hated the girl who tried to hide the pricing saying it was in the best interest for the cats, so i asked again and they finally showed me. They also charge for things they may use- so why not just charge after you are sure you used them. also told the doctor multiple times i can go to the VA to get his heart checked out but instead of that they said it was fine but wanted to run some extra test not covered by insurance in their office after i repeatedly told them i can take him to the va for get it cleared. this is horrible business model and should not be supported out of principle. this business model would mean less animals are rescued just for private equity pockets to get richer. Also the manager tried to poor shame cos i was appalled at the pricing and wanted to shop around and hello i did find a vet that charges 800 for full sleep and teeth cleaning. hallelujah. also no offense but 300 for rabies shot is also insane. read more

Drove her this morning to the vet's around 725 AM.....to realize it's tomorrow but I had already given her the required meds prior to the cleaning. Fortunately, they got me in today! I got updates from the app throughout the day. Which I loved. I met with her vet when I picked her up and oh my gosh! Her teeth looks AMAZING! They also gave me the good news-no extractions needed, no issues besides plaque build up....her teeth are soooo white, clean and they did a meticulous job! My daughter and I both bring our dogs to Modern Animal. She regularly attends this location, while I typically go to whichever location is most convenient for me. However, this location in particular has a serious and consistent problem with respecting appointment times. If you book an appointment here, be prepared to sit and wait far beyond your scheduled time. This is not an occasional issue or a one-time inconvenience. This has happened repeatedly and you're expected to be on their timing. Every single time my daughter has came in the past year she has waited 15+ minutes to see a doctor after the appointment time then waited another 15+ minutes after the doctor has left to get a vaccine or medication. If you make a complaint be prepared for them to rush you out of the door you can even say what card you wanna use before they processed payment and kick you out the door. They are very forgetful here so be prepared to triple check everything. What is incredibly frustrating is the double standard. If a client is 10 to 15 minutes late, the clinic is quick to call, threaten cancellation, and emphasize the importance of being on time. Yet when the clinic itself is running 15 to 30 plus minutes behind, clients are simply expected to sit there indefinitely and "be patient" because of staffing issues or other appointments. Respectfully, your staffing issues are not the client's responsibility especially at these prices. Appointments are advertised as 30 minutes, yet after arriving on time clients are then informed that visits may actually take anywhere from 30 minutes to over an hour depending on what the clinic has going on internally. That is something that should be disclosed BEFORE the appointment, not after. "We're sorry" does not change the fact that your scheduling issues directly impact other people's responsibilities outside of your clinic. It's so annoying and they don't care they just want you to call them and tell them what's wrong but even if you do.... That does NOTHING. read more

We made the switch to Modern Animal In attempt to find a better vet in our area. Our first visit for a basic check up, vaccines and flea medication went well for our two cats. However my experience changed yesterday when I brought my 2 year old cat in since he had been vomiting bile and not eating for 24 hours. Out of an abundance of caution and fear of an obstruction I opted to have his blood work and X-rays done. Yes I knew this would be expensive but knew it was the right thing to do to rule out an obstruction or something more serious. The other part of his visit would include fluids and an injection for nausea. This part of the visit was the most important to me so he could get immediate relief. They took him back and told me he needed to be sedated as he became combative to having a blood draw and X-rays. I agreed to this as I also didn't want him to become more stressed. I went home and awaited the results and to pick him up. The vet called me and said his blood work was normal and his X-rays didn't show an obstruction. She said fluids would be administered and a shot for nausea and to pick him up in 45 min. I came back to pick him up only for the vet to say they over sedated him and reversed it and thus weren't able to give him fluids and his anti nausea shot. I was very confused by this. She instead instructed me to give him anti nausea pills at home. Keep in mind I've never given a cat a pill before let alone when he would even gag at the smell of food. I didn't see how this was helpful to my cat or me. She also wanted to give me an appetite stimulant however they were out of stock. Of course...they also tried to make an appointment at a different location In Long Beach the next day to get fluids etc since their location was closed. Is that a joke? I wasn't going to drive all the way down there the next day. I live in El Segundo. I left very displeased and ended up taking him to el Segundo animal hospital that same day. Keep in mind my cat was still sedated. They easily gave him fluids and the anti nausea shot and the appetite medication. All with less than an hour. How is a "Modern" and expensive vet office seeing this as acceptable service. We paid $1200 and my cat left with no relief and no waiving of the office visit at the least. They are fancy and the place smells nice and has a good app and free drinks etc but when it comes to performance look elsewhere. read more

Shady business practice. Super disappointed in this trend specifically with chain store vets. Sure, $99 for a year sounds good. It is really one vet visit. Their labs are generally 150% higher than the actual cost from a reputable vet, then they push more labs. They had taken a urine specimen that came back as having some bacteria, then said they wanted to do another lab on urine they already had for an additional $263.00 typically (75-125 by the way) after I had already spent $300.00 on a blood test and labs (usually 150) . This is the typical scam happening these days. We can do better for our pets. It feels like a mob operation, corporation vet clinics who prioritize unethical profit over realistic veterinary care. After being a member for 3.5 years I am finally done with Modern Animal. The final straw for me was an incident with my cat when I was out of town. Just before I left to go to New York to run the NYC marathon my cat stopped eating and I had a really bad feeling that he wasn't feeling well. I immediately got an appetite stimulant for him and set up a whole bunch of options for food in front of cameras and left for the airport. I was up all night on my red eye watching the cameras to see if the appetite stimulant would work and he still did not eat or drink. Knowing that it is very dangerous for cats to go 36+ hours without food or water, when I landed in NY, I immediately organized with Modern Animal to get him seen. It was quite an undertaking to then organize someone to get him into his carrier and drop him off at the vet, but I was so relieved thinking that he was going to get the care that he needed. I spoke with the vet that was assigned (not my usual one) and gave him the background and he truly sounded disinterested in helping me out whatsoever. My cat hates the vet and normally I do have to give him some gabapentin before vet visits to chill him out. Obviously I could not do that this time, so the doc said he wanted to sedate him to examine him. That was fine with me. Hours go by and I get a call saying they tried to sedate him but it didn't work so they will try again. Several more hours pass. They finally call me and say they can't sedate him and there's nothing more they can do and to 'come and get him.' It's truly like they just didn't hear me when I explained that I was across the country and they certainly didn't care that he was being sent home to an empty house without anyone there to take care of him. They suggested that I bring him back the next day after giving him gabapentin. I told them that my cat sitter wouldn't be able to pill him by herself as it normally takes the 2 of us to pill him, and they told me to get her to put the gabapentin in his food. WHAT PART OF HE'S NOT EATING DON'T YOU GUYS UNDERSTAND?!?! The doc also suggested some prescription food and a probiotic and a couple of other items, and I said yes to everything and to please package it up and I will get my cat sitter to pick him up with the items and take him home. When she picked him up they didn't even bother giving her any of the items they recommended. The cat sitter brought him home and set up fresh food in front of cameras and I stayed glued to the feeds from across the country. I paid for an extra visit to have her return first thing the following morning. The next morning when she visited, he still hadn't eaten anything and she said that he had deteriorated so much overnight that if it was her cat she would be getting him to the ER. We immediately changed our flight home to the earliest we could and canceled our entry into the NYC marathon (after 5 months of training and thousands of dollars for our charity entry). When we got home at midnight that night, we rushed him to the ER and we learned that he has pancreatitis, which is easily diagnosed by a simple blood test and treatable with fluids and pain meds. However, since it had been so long since he had food or water he now had to be hospitalized. The final bill was $8,500. I was truly willing to forgive Modern Animal for their incompetence, neglect, and medical malpractice and I gave them a chance to make it right. I complied with their requests for the records and waited WEEKS for them to review the information and come up with a resolution to offer me. They finally replied offered me a $300 credit to use for future services and even more insulting took no responsibility. Didn't even apologize for the trauma my cat had to endure, or the emotional distress they caused us. $300 in a credit is just flat out insulting. Bottom line is they don't care about you or your pets and use their 'fear free' practice tag line as an excuse for utter incompetence and neglect. read more

I took my dog in last Friday for an eye infection with Dr. Sung Yeop Kim. Dr. Kim spent about five minutes telling me all the things that could be wrong with her eye. When he finished, he asked if I wanted a particular test done and I said no. He hadn't even examined her eye yet! He asked me to put her on the table. I have a mini Labradoodle, who I admit, was being very wiggly. He took her head, examined her eye for less than 10 seconds told me it was bloodshot and he would give me some drops. That's it! I left the appointment and that night I put the drops in and noticed something sticking out of her eye. It looked like a burr or some sort of tiny stick that was lodged under the eyelid. The next morning, when I put the drops in, I found another plant stem lodged under her eyelid. If Dr. Kim had done a thorough exam and opened her eye up and inspected it more than 10 seconds, I am sure that these two pieces of wood would've been found. I am very disappointed with the level of care my dog received. read more

Finding a new vet can be such a hassle, especially for us since we were coming from the east coast. Have been a member of Modern animal since moving to Los Angeles in 2022, and have been coming to the clinic in Manhattan beach since moving to the South Bay in 2023. My wife and I have nothing but good things to say about this clinic and their treatment of our furbaby Coco. The entire staff is attentive and amazing for keeping Coco comfortable during exams, blood draws etc.. Everyone is just so amazing, especially Dr. Friedman who we have mostly seen over the past couple of years. She does an amazing job of explaining things to us and has taken excellent care of Coco. If medications are needed they usually have some stock of antibiotics and other medications in house, and if other medications are needed they provide a pharmacy that will ship the medications to you ASAP. We are so happy to be part of the modern animal family and will continue to bring Coco in for her care. Would definitely recommend this clinic to anyone in the area. read more

Today I had an exceptional experience at Modern Animal Manhattan from start to finish! We were welcomed by the most kind front desk staff members, and then taken to a room with a wonderful vet tech - Eileen. Eileen was thorough, diligent, listened intently, and was so gentle with my pup. Dr Prince went above and beyond to be patient, sweet, and gentle with my pup as well. Dr Prince was knowledgeable, and overall lovely to work with!! As my pup was a first time patient fresh out of the shelter environment, he was extremely timid and shy. Dr prince & vet tech Eileen without hesitation sat on the floor with him and made him feel comfortable. By the end of the visit he was taking treats from their hands. I will 100% be taking my other two dogs + all my current and future foster dogs to Modern Animal Manhattan Beach! As I left the staff was noticeably cleaning the space, ensuring everything was nice for the next guest. This went a long way!! Dr. Dunn / Modern Animal did an amazing job with my cat's dental cleaning and scaling! We were nervous about the procedure because our pet would need to undergo general anesthesia, and there was also a chance he would need surgical extractions. Thankfully no extractions were found to be needed, and now his teeth look SO healthy and clean, unrecognizable from when they were caked in plaque. The pricing on the website for the procedure is accurate/transparent as well. Shout-out to Shannon too who was so kind and communicated updates throughout the day through the app. She even sent photos of my cat to show me how he was doing. One thing to note is that owners are responsible for administering pre-meds for the procedure which can be a challenge for cats. But there are backup methods of giving the meds at the office if not feasible. Glad we chose Modern Animal for feline dental treatment! read more

My little Lola Mae had quite the journey of ups and downs over the last several months of her life. Being so far from her long time vet I had to evolve our team to include a local office. I don't know what I would have done without having the level of service provided by Modern Animal, who became the foundation of our care team very quickly. When there was a stressful situation I could message and a vet nurse would respond at any hour, and I had to unfortunately use that service more times than I would have liked. When I needed an urgent appointment there always was one available, and I had to use that service way too many times also. When our beloved animals are sick it's so stressful, but knowing I always had a place that could help at any moment made the last several months much easier than they would have been. We were even up in the Bay Area at one point and forgot her blood pressure meds, and I was able to pick them up from a location up there. Had we had any issues I knew I had a place to go, which also made it easier being on the road. From July to November we went to MA more than a dozen times. The care that Dr Friedman, and then Dr Storm and ultimately Dr Dunn provided was so compassionate and thorough. Unfortunately we had to help Lola transition just a few months shy of her 18th birthday. The whole experience was managed very well. We didn't have to be in an exam room. They let us have as much time as we needed. They were so supportive. Brooklyn and Christina and the vet nurses there were always so sweet and helpful. After her passing they sent us flowers and cards and really went above and beyond in such a difficult time. I highly recommend this place. read more
