I actually really like Josie, the young lady who did my hair. She was attentive and kind and willing to fix anything I had issue with. Normally, I don't ever come back to a colorist with issues, so this was a first for me, but I was glad to work with her to fix it. The management was awful from the start. I called to make my appointment and she had me tell her what I was having done. I have no idea, I don't know the different color techniques or what I should have done. Turns out they wanted to know how much time I would need in the chair. I would have no idea. Then I had a serious issue with the color itself. The front is brassy blond with odd root lines showing and the back is almost a white blond. But I was happy to go in for a fix. Management called me prior to my "fix it" appointment and I was grilled demanding to know my entire hair color history over the phone, I'm not a colorist so I had no idea how to explain it or what I was going to need to have done to fix it. The I was accused of being unhappy with what I told the colorist to do. Huh? If a customer is unhappy and kindly requests a fix, why didn't she have me come in and evaluate herself, rather than grill me over the phone? Turns out she was concerned about how much time I would require in a chair, again. Also, she informed me that I'd have to pay for the blow out after it was fixed. I am supposed to walk out with wet hair and assume the color looks good? She explained you weren't happy with the color, not the blow out. So, you have to pay for the blowout. WHAT? The tone used, the excuses, the blame the customer attitude and my hair still isn't the way I'd like it. read more

I love this place! Super nice, attentive and not pretentious. Usually when I get my hair colored my scalp burns and it's terribly uncomfortable, not here! They use organic color products that cover my tenacious grays and lasts as ling as the nasty chemical colorants do. I also have long, thick, curly hair which can take a while to blow straight, Josephine has me done in under an hour ( miracle speed!). Lotsa love for the stylists at Modern Design!! read more

I LOVE THIS PLACE!! I came here initially for a DEVA cut, and just like that I knew this place was the one. I have very dry, massive curly hair. The cut was perfect, and the stylists are super informative and gave me great advice for daily maintenance! I've gotten cuts, treatments, eyebrow tints, and I've seen every stylist on staff. Not once have I ever had a bad experience. The kindest people you'll ever meet, and the vibe is always so positive. If you're on the fence, don't be. You won't be disappointed! read more

Walking into Modern Designs is like walking into your rich aunt's living room. Plush couches, comfy chairs, nice lighting and furniture. I always instinctively put my hand out to take my martini, but it never comes. Super clean, comfortable, and ummmmm, well modern. They also cut hair. The staff all seem quite friendly, and they tolerate me not even knowing how I get my hair cut. Other hairdressers seem annoyed when they ask how I want my hair cut, and I reply "like it is, just shorter." Here, I don't have any problems. Oh, did I mention that the chair you recline in to get your hair washed is a massaging chair? Well, it is, and it's amazing. If my hairdresser didn't make a point of talking to me, I'd fall asleep in the thing. It runs me $20 for a men's cut, which is standard for just about everywhere. I've always got my hair cut by Jenna, and she honestly has an attention to detail. I have yet to get a lopsided little boy's cut. Modern Designs is conveniently located close to College Highway, so anybody in the Suffield/Westfield/Southwick/Granby area will have a short ride. It's worth it to make the drive from even further away. read more

She did damage control on a bad haircut I had gotten elsewhere - you would never know what a mess it had been. She gave me good instructions on how to handle my hair myself which I appreciated. Three weeks ago I went to my appointment at Modern Design to get blonde balayage (I posted the picture of what I wanted and the results) I explained to the hair stylist that I had some red in my hair that was barely noticeable because I know red is sometimes hard to get out so I wasn't sure if she had to strip it. She told me that she would be able to do the balayage but that it probably wouldn't come out as blonde as in the picture I showed her and I would have to come back for a second application which I was okay with. To make a long story short, my hair came out awful. Some pieces were a lighter red than it already was; some were copper and some were blonde. There was also a line around the middle of my hair where the red had grown out and she had lightened with the toner. Besides the color going wrong, in the picture that I posted and showed her, the color starts a few inches from the root. On my hair, she did little streaks at the top and painted just the tips. I also got a trim with layers and when I washed and straightened my hair the left side had jagged uneven cuts. After she was done she kept telling me you will have to come back and we can try to get it more blonde, and red is so hard to get out. I ended up paying $230 that's with the tip included, and I left feeling mortified and cried the whole way home. Listen, I understand red is hard to get out but she should have told me that I was going to have multiple colored hair and only the tips dyed. She said she wouldn't be able to get it as blonde as in the picture the fist time that's it. Everyone asked me why I payed and I just don't know. I guess I'm just a shy person and felt bad. The owner was working on a client next to me and I feel like she should have intervened. A few hours later my fiancé went in to get his hair cut by the owner and told her what happened and she said she would be able to fix the red line around it but that's it. I am just so upset because I work hard for my money and I feel like I flushed $230 in the toilet. That same day I went to the salon at Ulta and spoke with a stylist who said she can take the red out and make it blonde and it will only be $120. All I can do is make sure to tell my story because I do have family and friends that go to this salon and I hope that this does not happen to anyone else. read more

Proceed with caution. If you want a very amateur hair color and cut, this is the place. I purchased a groupon for a cut and color. I read the reviews on this site, thinking I would give them a shot and see if this would be my new "go to" place. After visiting, probably not. My experience: I called ahead to make an appointment several days in advance. I made it for a Friday at 4pm. I arrived, was nicely greeted, and was invited to sit on their sofas until the stylist assigned to me could start. I was finally put in chair around 4:35, and we proceeded to go over color options. I am a dark brunette. I asked her to be cautious of going any darker on my hair, as dark color usually turns out hideously black, and as a brunette with natural lighter shades, its just not appreciated having a flat matte color. She acknowledged what I said, applied the color, and by 5:05, I was back on the couch. Until 6:15. My hair processed over an hour. I recently moved to this area from a different state, and have never had my stylist let color sit in my hair so long. This whole time, my assigned stylist is back to her original client that I originally waited for when I first arrived, while the rest of the stylists sat and gossiped. No one offered to rinse my hair, offer me a beverage, or check on me. Fast forward, I hated the color- black as ever.. shocker. I dont know who has black hair (other than ethnicities with it naturally occuring), or wants black hair. After seeing the color, I decided against the cut I wanted, and went with a basic cut. I didnt trust the stylist to have the experience to give me what I wanted. She couldnt balance her time with clients and color, and kind of seemed to do what she wanted. I wont be back. Tracy has been cutting my hair for about a year now with the Deva cut which is perfect for my long curly hair. I also have her color it and do a partial highlight. I have been very happy with her and find that she listens to me when I explain to her what I want and also what I don't want. Since I have been getting the Deva cut I am always getting compliments from people who LOVE MY CURLY HAIR!!
