Came here on a quiet Sunday night. The place has a family-run feel, with colourful, whimsical murals lining the walls. Onto the food: the chicken tikka masala was creamy and spicy, not sweet at all. Really good. The saag lamb sported a generous helping of lamb chunks which were reasonably tender. I ordered them "medium hot" which were "hot" to my taste (I'd go down a notch next time). Nicely renovated cozy restaurant on Denman serving up a large variety of curries , naan, Biryani, and vegetarian options. Servings were generous and the curries were rich and full of flavour. Each offering a clearly different taste. The Lababdar paneer curry was the favourite with a complex rich creamy cashew sauce. The pulao rice was a good serving and nicely seasoned. Veggie Pakoras were nicely seasoned, not too spicy or heavy and a good crunch. Offering goat, lamb, beef and chicken. Service was great and welcoming. read more

This place exceeded all our expectations! I was looking for a lunch spot where we could be in and out within an hour near Stanley Park as we were hungry after an aquarium visit, and Modern Handi delivered on that hope. I've been eating homecooked Indian food my whole life and while different parts of India make the same dish different ways, I definitely felt like the flavors I tasted were authentic and not watered down. I ordered spicy and yes, I can confirm that it was *extremely* spicy. We got the thalis, which I feel were a great value. We each tried a different one - I got the lamb curry non-veg one, another person got the butter chicken non-veg one, and another got the channa masala veg one. Every component was amazing - I loved the papadum, the naan had a great texture, the curry and the dal both had amazing flavor profiles, and even the tandoori chicken was good! I'm a harsh critic of tandoori chicken because it's almost always dry due to improper preparation at restaurant scale, but it was shockingly moist here. I'm not a gulab jamun fan (and would've preferred a choice on the dessert), but I did take a bite of it and it was much better than I've normally had of this sickeningly sweet dessert. I accidentally stumbled upon Modern Handi when looking for some comfort food and while I have been ordering from them for ages, this was my first time actually in the restaurant. The staff was super courteous and attentive. We ordered a chicken biryani (mild) as well as daal tadka. The daal tadka was the only jain option (food without onion and garlic) that they had. However, the Jain person with us said it was one of the best daal tadka they have had in some time. The biryani is also one of the best that I have tried across the globe though their mild biryani can be a little hot as well so do mention you want it extra mild! My wife & me (both vegetarians) visited Modern Handi Restaurant yesterday for lunch. It is a typical North Indian Restaurant serving the standard Punjabi Style Food. It seems the general perception of people all over the world is that North Indian Food represents Indian Cuisine. Unfortunately I beg to differ with this view as there are vast varieties of South Indian , Gujerati , dishes also -which most often get ignored. I am further not a great fan of North Indian Foods as the only so called vegetables they cook always are Paneer & Channa dishes all in gravy form . They are total novices at cooking vegetables (Cauliflower, Cabbage, Brinjal, Beetroot, Beans & others) in a dry manner with no gravy but with "Real Spice"! Inspite of my reservations regarding North Indian food, we found this small little restaurant tucked away on Denman Street & had their Veg Thali's for lunch. These consisted of the usual " Dal Makhani, either a Shahi Paneer or Palak Paneer,Butter Naan , Plain Basmati Rice with some peas , a Papad, Gulab jamoon Sweet & a cabbage salad .(Not the usual cut onions & slices of carrots) No Raita or Yoghurt was included (seems to be a trend in Vancouver North Indian Restaurants not to include Yoghurt or Raita in their Thali's) & we therefore ordered their mixed raita as extra. (Indian Thali's the world over always serve nice spicy Raita with their meal -but not in Vancouver). We further requested the dishes to be made " extra spicy" but they were "mild " when we tasted. However the quality of the food, the quantity & the "presentation" was very good ! Further The Owners were most pleasing & very friendly to our requests. The restaurant was largely empty when we had our meal. It is well decorated , clean yet simple with soft Indian music & the best thing was their Unisex Toilet which had flower vases, paintings & was spotlessly clean ! The Owners need to be commended for maintaining the restaurant elegantly. We will visit this restaurant again in the near future . read more

The best channa masala I have found this far! Located in the west end, closer to Robson St., this hidden gem is a small whole in the wall. I've lived here for so long and have never tried this place and I'm thrilled I did! I ordered channa and garlic naan and that came to $18. The portions are comparable and the food was piping hot. The sauce to chickpea ration is perfect, the bread was elastic and so garlicy! I wish that more Indian restaurants would do dinner combos but they do offer a thali at lunch time! A must try if you love Indian cuisine! A hidden gem on Denman Street, the food here was simply delicious! Best Chicken Mehti, Chicken Korma and Butter Chicken for sure! The prices are very inexpensive for being right downtown Vancouver and the portions may look smaller but those copper pots hold a lot and they give you a really generous portion of chicken. I'm a huge Chai snob and there's was some of the best I've had. You must try their garlic naan too, it's very good. Friendly service by the owners I assume and we are already planning another dinner with friends next week! read more

Super underrated restaurant. If you come here, you owe it to yourself to get paneer tikka or if you're a non vegetarian, the chicken equivalent. They call it Kesari Paneer and it's the most authentic to India Paneer tikka I've had in my 12 years of being an immigrant. Unapologetically authentic, complete with saunf and mishri at the end. If you're Indian and don't want white washed Indian food, this is your spot. If you're not Indian and looking for something authentic, this is your spot. Portions are great too. Only thing missing in a truly Indian experience would be a bowl of hot water in lime for cleaning your fingers but I haven't seen that anywhere in Vancouver, so it's fine i guess. Cheers! read more

Poor service mediocre food. I ordered the matar paneer, garlic naan and a mango lassi. I will say I liked the taste of the garlic naan and mango lassi but the matar paneer was very bland and too watery for my liking. It took them forever to get me the menu and then bring the food out. The place wasn't even busy, there were only 3 other groups. The table next to me got their order within 10 minutes of ordering whereas it took them 30 minutes to bring my food out. read more

My Palak Paneer was a different flavour than I am used to, not sure why. The consistancy of both dishes was more runny than I am used to as well. Delivery was $4 and took 45mins, so standard. I spent $40 on the two dishes with two garlic naan, no rice and a tip for delivery guy (15%), not the cheapest, but also not the most expensive. I appreciated the plastic take out containers and proper packaging for deliver. Often I get an oily mess in a paper bag. Garlic naans were perfect. read more

We were visitors to Vancouver, staying in a cozy apartment nearby. After a full day of sightseeing around that beautiful city, we were weary and wanted take out. Mondern Handi is located right around the corner and we decided to give it a try. We sat at the little bar and drank a beer while waiting for our order. The interior is cute and cozy. Nothing out of this world but certainly comfortable and pleasant. We got our order in good time and went back to the apartment. After firing up the fireplace and pouring some wine, we dug in and boy was it good! The dishes were flavorful (we asked for and got extra spicy), the bread was baked perfectly and the rice separated nicely. Plus, the portions were generous enough that we had leftovers. This was such a beautiful Restaurant. After walking 7 miles around the Stanley Park we knew we where hungry for something refreshing and spicy. Upon arrival the Restaurant setting was beautifully setting with warm colors. I ordered a Mango lassi & my friend ordered Badami drink. It was just what our appetite craved for. Then we ordered a full meal of Lamb and Rice, topped with a side salad and Latkas. I would definitely encourage anyone to for a drink or some appetizers. The service was amazing. read more

Discovered this awesome little restaurant while staying downtown Vancouver and we were thrilled! Served by the owners and when asking for suggestions eventually ended up with Chicken Chattinad (amazing!) and Lamb Raganjosh. Along with Aloo Gobi (spicy cauliflower potato veggie dish) and the Paulao Rice - all the food was so fresh and with such subtle flavors that we devoured it! This new restaurant was empty, so I was cautious, but lo and behold, it's a new and unknown place that I immediately wanted to return to! Brilliant flavours, friendly staff (new waitress in training was shy and adorable), gave us complimentary tomato soup that I fell in love with! Sahi Paneer lunch special was mildly spiced, the naan hot and stretchy, the rice delicate and distinct. A must-eat place! And the masala tea was not sweetened, so you can add your own sugar (I prefer mine unsweetened.) read more

The fact the owner is just "around" gave it a weird vibe. -Half or more of the restaurant is still Mexican themed. -Three different TV's or one tv and two radios, no sound consistency Basically I liked the bread and the nice waitress, but as a customer I don't see any real effort going into this place to make it an Indian Restaurant. Was open on Christmas Day so landed there. Hosts were nice and friendly, so was the ambience; small but well maintained and managed. Food wise it appealed for authentic naan but scores poorly for rest all other items, Biriyani - host did inform they don't have dum biriyani, but seriously who makes it with broccoli Chicken Vindaloo - Cooked tender chicken in tomato puree and what I could taste is only tomato, this was my extreme disappointment Sahi paneer - will rate average, not too much on either side I would say, not an Authentic Indian food. read more

Okay food, but bad service. At first I was seated at a booth by one of the girls, and then I noticed one of the older men (owner maybe?) getting annoyed with her about it so I offered to move to a dirty, 2 person table, which was fine, since it was me alone. This wasn't a problem at all, but then when I just ordered the samosas the girl rolled her eyes at me when I said that was everything. She refused to take the menu away from me because I will "want to order something else." Then at the end I could not get the bill, and neither could another table beside me. They would just stand there and even after I asked for it they ignored me, eventually I got up and walked to the front to pay. I'm not sure who is reviewing this restaurant for it to have such a high rating...but if you have any experience with Indian cuisine, you will know that this restaurant is rubbish. We ordered the butter chicken and the lamb rogan josh, with some appetizers. First of all it's seriously overpriced, and their portions are very small considering the price the charge. But besides that, their food tastes bland, stale, and like many corners have been cut. If you've never tried good Indian or Pakistani food and you have nothing to compare it to, you might be surprised by my review. But if you've ever tried any Indian food that's been remotely good, in my opinion you'll be very disappointed by this place. I do not recommend. read more
