This is my local and favorite liquor store. I've been using them for over three years (since 2017), and I've gotten to know the owners well. I have a massive home bar, and I make a cocktail for myself almost every night. The owners are hardworking, good people who care about the selection and quality of their stock. For a store this size, the depth and breadth of their selection is unmatched. They carry some important items and of higher quality. For example, they have an excellent vermouth selection. Excellent whiskey and gin selection. Great selection of liqueurs and aperitifs. Great selection of bitters. Some good mixers. Fine beer selection. Decent wine selection. Some sherries. Some special items that aren't easily found-- unusual liqueurs from Europe, for example. I saw some reviews suggesting that the owners are rude. Honestly I'm very surprised to hear anything negative. My guess is these negative reviews are a mix of inaccurate reports and rare bad nights. One of the employees is kind of quiet, but I think there's a language barrier. I have made multiple attempts to contact the business via phone and email to request a status update, but the company has been entirely non-responsive. Horrible horrible company. Sent my shipment to some random place in MD when I live in VA. They then said they'd deliver my bottles two different times and NOTHING. Waited two whole days listening for door. They have yet to reply to any of my five emails. They don't answer their phone and their voicemail is full so you can't leave a message. Spent $1,000 online at their 'website' only to wait 16 days for any communication. I received a UPS tracking number, but it wasn never dropped off. During that time stock levels on the products went out, in, and back out of stock. Currently showing in stock for some of them! Also prices were changed during those inventory changes. I highly don't recommend this store. They have lots of misleading information in the store and on their website, had two maskless employees walking around, and tried to push me to buy a product whose owners reportedly dumped industrial waste in VA recently. I went there because of a bottle that's listed as available on their website. Then when I showed up it wasn't there. Several other bottles are mislabeled on the shelf - when you go to check out, they're a different price (over $20 more for 2 different bottles each I attempted to buy). The bourbon I was pushed to buy was Filibuster - Google the news on their alleged industrial waste dumping. Sorry, you won't have my business. I placed an order, they didn't ship it after a week so i called them and they said they couldn't help me over the phone and I had to email them, so i did. they didn't reply the first 2 times, but after i filed a report with the BBB and completed fraud paperwork through my bank to get my $260 order refunded - this business finally decided to email me back and refund my order telling me they didn't have my order in stock....over a week later. Crazzzzyyyyyy overpriced. there's another liquor spot 2 blocks over. if you're staying at either marriott, make the trip and save $20 on a pint. One price i know was $26 for 375mL of Crown. Crazy! and they just make up numbers as they go! half the prices are wrong or just not listed at all. I see that there are pretty good reviews about this place. However, my friends and I had a not so good experience. I found this place on YELP of course :). . .it was near the place we were staying for the weekend. It was within walking distance, so we chose to go here. Upon entrance, we were not greeted by the man behind the register. There were a couple vendors there that were very nice, but didn't work for the establishment directly, but they were still helpful. This store is also a bit pricey. I guess because it's the only one in the area, they can do that. Once we had chosen our stock, we went to check out and we wanted to ask the man behind the desk a few questions. We did so. He ignored us. We thought he was def until the Caucasian female to our left asked him about a wine she wanted and he answered. Once again, we asked him about a mixer and he ignored us again. It wasn't until my friends wife went closer to the desk and yelled (nicely) and asked him where something was. Although he answered, he did not give eye contact. I am all about good customer service, this guy was completely unaware of what that was. Needless to say, when we visit DC again, we will NOT be giving this place our business. Oh, the selection of alcohol is sub par. They do have delivery as well. read more

Nice (moderate-size--not huge) selection of whiskeys (and whiskys), with some harder-to-find bourbons and ryes, and some interesting barrel picks. Proprietor is very friendly, knowledgeable about his products and provides complimentary guided tastings, which add to the confidence in your purchase decisions. Option of online purchase and pickup add convenience. Prices aren't bad for the region, either. Would definitely recommend the place! read more

Huge selection of rare whiskey--Willett, Blanton's, Yamazaki, Weller, Pappy, etc, etc. Only negative is that prices can sometimes be pretty marked up based on stock for the really rare stuff (ex $110 for a bottle of Blanton's) but, if looking for a gift or something and you can't wait to win an ABC lottery, or for your closest ABC store to hopefully get one day, you can pay the premium to get it here. Do not under any circumstances buy anything from this company online. I bought an expensive bottle as a gift for a friend. A week after the order I called them and they told me that UPS hasn't shown up in a week, when I talked to UPS they verified they had been out there every day. I saw that the shipping label was then created 2 days later by Modern Liquors, so they blatantly lied to me about UPS. The next week, I followed up with them again and they said UPS must have lost the package and I will have to eat the cost. UPS confirmed they never received the package and that it has never been scanned. This company lies and steals from their customers. read more

Their craft beer selection isn't nearly as good as Sherry's, but their brown liquor spread is definitely up to snuff. Friendly staff behind the counter offered to answer questions and make recommendations (one spoke much better English than the other). They have more Mars distillery expressions than I've seen in other shops around town, and generally maximize what little real estate they have. Shrubs and bitters on the shelf by the register. Overall pricing seems on the higher end of average. This is definitely going to be a regular pit stop to peruse when I'm in the area. read more

This place is super close to my house so I was hoping it would be a great one stop shop! I tried three times to get them to deliver on their promise to stock a specific rum for me, and gave my email address on three occasions with promises that they would have the rum the following week. On the third visit they still didn't have the rum. I wish they could have been more honest that they couldn't deliver on their promise. This place is pretty convenient to me, they usually have good sales, and the staff is friendly and helpful. They really have A LOT of wine for how small this place is. They also have a pretty decent selection of beer in 6-packs. They have the basics, in addition to some more eclectic brands. I was meeting my friends for a Groundhog Day celebration and stopped by here for some Woodchuck Cider (get it?). A staff member helped me peruse through all the bottles of wine to see if one of them had a groundhog or similar creature on the label. I really appreciated the gesture, even though it was a stretch. My favorite thing about Modern Liquors is that you don't have to peer into a bullet proof glass and tell the man behind the counter what you want. I live closer to the liquor store on 9th & P but sometimes you feel the need to walk around look, and perhaps touch the bottles before purchasing. Staff is defintely helpful and friendly. It has more of a neighborhood feel where everybody knows your name and they are always glad you came. The wine and cheese tasting events add a nice touch.. and you get 10% of the featured products. They have a great selection of wine, beer and booze. I'm a fan. read more

This place has an ok wine selection and is extremely convenient. I like to drink "wine coolers" like Smirnoff Ice in the warm months because I don't drink beer ...and they don't carry many of these selections at all. The prices are a little high. They are sneaky though...I've noticed that the last couple of times I went and picked out one or 2 bottles of wine I was rang up at a higher price than what was displayed on the shelf. There prices were unfortunately a tad higher than expected - however, their selection for beers were second to none expect for regular domestic brews. This place is fantastic! Not only is the selection vast, but the owner is a key reason why I return. I will go out of my way to support ML and Jeff personally as he's extremely helpful, knowledgable and friendly.. it doesn't hurt that I also live 4 blocks away. If you like a wide-variety of beer, go here. Wine selection could be a bit more, but it's well set up with recommendations or sales listed under certain bottles. I rarely buy liquor, but there's a full wall of it. Jeff helped me pick out a bottle of Whiskey once for a friend, as I have no clue about whiskeys.. it was very well rec'vd. And he doesn't just recommend the more expensive stuff. He once told me a $5 bottle of chardonnay was better than the bottle I had, which was double the price. It's located very close to the Mt. I would probably shop here no matter what because it's in my neighborhood, but the service and selection at Modern Liquors makes me go out of the way to come here even if I pass another liquor store on my way home. The best part of the store for me is that the staff is knowledgeable and always makes great recommendations within a price range. They are also happy to give 10% discounts on 6 bottles, and I often allow them to choose for us. My fiance also loves their selection of microbrews and is always trying something different. Now, I may be slightly biased, as I lived next door for two years, and was named an 'unofficial mascot' (Mother was so proud), but Modern Liquors is a neigborhood staple, a little pocket of warmth in a sea of sketch. If you google Modern Liquors, you'll probably find a few articles--it's got a lot of history. It's family owned, and has stood the test of time through the 68 riots, several burglaries (long time ago, don't worry--but Jeff can show you the bullet holes in the walls which makes you feel kind of thug just for being there), and, lately, the arrival of the new convention center. (The neighborhood is so nice now!) A few other highlights (gosh, i love this place): -Jeff, the owner, is wonderful--very helpful and friendly, and has the cutest little daughter who is often in the corner watching teletubbies. -Great selection (liquor/wine/beer), and reasonably priced. -Free wine tastings one Wednesday a month, always accompanied by delish cheese and grapes. The whole neighborhood shows up, which makes me feel all warm and fuzzy. Even if you're in from out of town, stop by for a snapshot of the neighborhood crew. -The only other liquor store in the area is on 11th, and you kind of feel like you need to wear gloves to touch anything and duck down while you're shopping in case of drive-bys. read more

The staff is friendly and helpful, and Modern Liquors offers a wide array of options. The negatives are that it tends to be a bit pricier than most places, and the store doesn't always have the beer you want stocked in the cooler (meaning you can get it, but I hope you like it warm- that should bring you back to your high school days). Friday night tastings are a plus, and the place is located in my neighborhood, so I am biased regarding the convenience. I cannot say enough good things about this liquor store and its staff. I have lived across the street from Modern Liquors for a year and it always is a fun experience to stop in the store. The owner, Jeff, is incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, and will always do his best to get you what you're looking for even if it involves disappearing into the mysterious stockroom and the sounds of many boxes being lifted and shifted. For the size of the store I find their wine and beer selection to be impressive, and they have all the standards when it comes to liquor along with a few creative surprises. However the best part of the store is all the extras. For example he carries a wide range of cocktail mixers and little things like muddling sticks (which I couldn't even find at Bed, Bath, & Beyond). He also often has good cheese and crackers for when you are in a friends coming over and no appetizers in your apartment kind of jam. As mentioned in the other reviews the wine tastings are phenomenal. It's a great way to meet your neighbors and try some good wine and there is no arm-twisting by Jeff to make sure you buy a bottle of what you are trying. As of this writing there were wine tastings virtually every Wednesday and beer or liquor tastings most Fridays. One night I actually got to meet a vintner from a vineyard in Spain who then autographed one of the bottles of his fine product for me! read more
