I LOVED this place! I had damaged nails with ridges and I had ordered regular shellac. The owner (I have forgotten her name ) stopped me and told me why they were damaged and how to treat them which was 2.5 layers of dipped powder and then the shellac. My nails look fabulous! Great luxury pedicure today at Modern Nails. Place is clean, staff is very friendly. Luxury pedicure included many steps including salt scrub, hot towel wrap, hot stone massage for calves then additional stones for feet. Little extras that you don't always get, like smoothing the nail surface before polish. Great massage chairs! read more

They do a really good job on crocodile feet like mine! I always leave feeling like I have brand new feet. Their work is very thorough and pay close attention to detail which that means I don't have to run back every week to get my feet cleaned up! I moved to Minneapolis but I will not allow anyone else to replace them. 5 stars across the board read more

I've rated them before... but this is about opening after Covid! FANSTASTIC! I've been coming here for 6 years!!! My temperature was checked at the door. I had to sign a consent form about my health. There are partitions up for the mania and pedis. The nail tables are spread out and they are seating only 1/2 the chairs for pedicures. Kim and Tina wearing face masks and plastic face shields as well. (They've ALWAYS worn gloves) SAME great pedicure. They are only doing gels, no regular colors. My covid-nasty toes look amazing! You must make an appointment. The door is locked til it's your time! I love these women!! They are happy, kind, and always take excellent care of me and my friends!! read more

Huge shout out to my Yelp peeps for helping me find this place! I needed somewhere that was following COVID restrictions to get my nails done before my wedding. What to do? Check out Yelp of of course! Needed somewhere close and so I made an appointment for 4pm on the Friday night before. Of course I was running late because I had to pick up the cake and they still let me show up! They had me wash my hands upon arrival and everyone wore masks the entire time. I was going to do sparkles and she let me know the polish was too thick and wouldn't dry properly. I decided on a French manicure and am SO HAPPY I did! My nails looked great and the polish stayed on well for much longer than I thought it would. She tried to get me to do gel and that wasn't happening because I didn't know if I would be able to go back. Thanks to all my helpers who helped me find an awesome spot and one day I shall return! I'm going to finally get a pedicure one of these days.... read more

Walk-Ins NOT welcome!! They need to update that in their listing. Don't come here if you do not have an appointment, even if it's just for a quick eyebrow wax like I needed. I walked in just as they were finishing up a client and was still denied. Told me I needed to come back later because people needed to get back to work...so did I. Keep in mind it was 10am. Paid for parking and everything. Only two people working in a 10 seat salon. Do better. read more

I highly recommend Modern Nails. **Call ahead to reserve a time** Tina is the technician who was meticulous with my dip/gel nails. The salon is very clean & basic. I have been getting pedicures here for several years. The quality has always been great and the women who work here are all wonderful. Went back today for the 1st time since they reopened due to the Covid closing and I was impressed! Temp is checked, hands are washed, consent is signed and the spacing and the partitions in the pedi section were well done. Staff are wearing both masks and shields. All other precautions and cleanliness of salon were top notch. Well done Ladies! read more

This shop is pretty understated, but it meets all my basic requirements for a great salon: 1) close to where I live, 2) clean, and 3) friendly, down-to-earth aestheticians. I enjoyed my conversation with Tao and plan to return. Prices are reasonable. I agree with other reviews on here - best not to count on a walk-in. I called ahead for an appointment and was seen right on time, however, I saw multiple other people try to pull off walk-ins while I was in the chair. Seems like they will eventually see walk-ins, but you'll wait for awhile. read more

To Mary D- I was the other woman, two seats down who witnessed your antics. I would like to echo Jessica's review on many levels. First and foremost, I really love Kim, Tina and her entire team at Modern Nails. I am lucky enough to be a regular because I work in the area. I call Kim, and she works to find a time to get me in for manicures and pedicures. And I am PICKY- and I get THE BEST MANICURES and PEDICURES at a really good price. They last a LONG time and I know the quality and care that I am going to get is the best. Second, I think Mary D. is way off base on her review and assessment of what really happened during her time at the salon. Mary D. sat through the entire manicure not complaining until the end. It seemed like a stunt to get her money back- and then she was a huge baby about it. The women at Modern Nails tried EVERYTHING to accommodate her- they tried getting her cream for her hang nails- WHICH MARY D. WALKED INTO the salon with the hang nails. The technician did not create that problem. MARY D PICKED HER NAIL COLOR- and then at the end complained about it not matching "honey bunny." Kim, the owner, apologized over and over and offered to re-do her color, Mary D. didn't want that, Kim offered to give Mary D. her money back, and she didn't take it initially. Then Mary D. called back and cried, like a baby, over and over about this and Kim said, please come back and get your money. Which Mary did the next day. Third, Mary D- please get some perspective. So you don't like your nail color- fine. Move on. There are bigger problems in the world- and trashing a hard working business online is really disrespectful to the wonderful ladies who work long hours, 6 days a week (Monday through Saturday!) to make a living for their families. If you speak with them you will learn how hard working and lovely they are. And they will give you great perspectives on how lucky we are to be in this country. Please, yelp community, please go to Modern Nails- they are great! Great manicures, great pedicures, great women who will make you laugh, make you feel good and remember you. read more

This is a great find in downtown St. Paul. I called on Monday to make an appointment for Thursday at 4:30, which is of course going to be a very busy time with the after-work crowd. I didn't get started until about 5:15, so luckily wasn't in that much of a rush--it just ended up being a longer day than expected since I didn't leave until 6:45. They recently stopped accepting credit cards so I had to go to the convenience store next door (ATM fee hmph). This is a very clean and professional environment, and the staff is very smiley and friendly. Clearly, there are a lot of regulars (both for nails and waxing services) since everyone seemed to be on a first-name, casual basis. Prices are reasonable, I paid approximately $40 for a gel finger polish and pedicure, and I was happy with the quality. There is metered parking both in front and around the corner, or there is a paid parking garage, so if you're coming from outside of Lowertown, expect to have a bit of a hassle unless you take MetroTransit. Besides the late start and cash-only incident, I had a good experience here and will be back on the rare occasion that I get my nails done. read more

Wish I could give this place a zero. I've gotten my nails done hundreds of times and have never been so upset. The woman cut me three times even after I asked her to stop bc she was hurting me. Then, when I asked for antiseptic she looked at me like I was an alien. The only reason I even created an account on here was to warn others about this place. I have no idea how they stay in business. My nails look way worse than they ever have and hurt/ start to bleed again whenever I brush them against something. I wish I could post pictures. read more

I thought I'd try out this salon since it's convenient in downtown St. Paul. They had nice colors and a lot of regulars. However, I wish I had gone to my usual spot. They had me keep on my sandals, but they got nail polish on them. If I wasn't so broke and didn't spend like half my paycheck on the only pair of shoes I wear I wouldn't care :( The massage was not that good IMO and they did not have a light to help dry your pedicure, just a little fan. It also wasn't very well ventilated in the salon. When I got back I checked my feet and there was still a lot of weird skin on the bottom sorry tmi but. The morning after the polish on my big toe was worn off / gone. I wanted to support a local business but I'm not sure if I'd come back here. I'd probably go a little farther for a better service at a similar price (around $30 for a pedicure both places). read more

I love this place. These ladies are so nice and so accommodating. And, they do a great job!! I have always had great results here. Kim is GREAT! I wouldn't say I'm a regular here (I don't live near St. Paul) but I have been there several times. The last time I was there was about 6 weeks ago. I was in again yesterday after work. As I looked through the basket of samples to pick my gel color I said "I wish I knew what I had last time. I loved that color." Kim stopped what she was doing and said "Oh, I know what you had." She went in the basket and pulled out the exact color I had last time. I was so shocked and thrilled. Now that is service!! I decided this is my new nail place! By the way, park in the Victory Ramp next door and you can park for just $2 with their parking validation. read more

We happened to stumble across Modern Nails on Yelp! And decided to check it out based on the great reviews. We were not disappointed! My mom, sister and little niece all got pedicures (and I also got a gel manicure), and everything was fabulous. The ladies were laughing and joking with us and having a great time. Plus they did a FANTASTIC job, and the prices are very reasonable. I live in Seattle so won't be able to make it back often, but my mom and sisters said they would be back. I booked my appointment literally one week in advance. Being that I don't have a car need to arrange a ride that far in advance. When I arrived was told it would be just another five minutes...was told that THREE times. My ride was returning to pick me up one hour later after they dropped me off. I selected Will and found his work to be IMPECCABLE, extremely meticulous, top top quality, strong and they lasted 5 -6 weeks before one loosened. He has many many years of experience. A four star rating instead of a much deserved 5 star is because of only 2 factors: the liquid compound he uses to mix with the acrylic powder, and the final finishing "sanding smoothing" step of the new acrylic nail . My dad was a Prof of Biochemistry so I am very aware of chemicals. Will unfortunately uses an unusually strong smelling chemical needed to bond the acrylic powder. I have asthma too and could not tolerate the pungency of this chemical. Then in the final filing/ smoothing of the newly bonded acrylic he uses his tiny electric sander which creates a very fine granular dust which bothered my eyes and caused me to cough. My former acrylic nail beautician in Florida did this sanding via hand. This manual process greatly decreases the high volume of dust. I can not ask Will to use a less toxic pungent chemical nor switch to manual sanding. So sadly I must find someone else. He is an EXTREMELY good artisan and craftsman and gave me BEAUTIFUL nails!!

The very next day, June 1, I responded with detailed concerns about both my pedicure and full set. I explained that I paid for the upgraded pedicure package, but the water was FREEZING cold, the "extended massage" was practically nonexistent, my calluses were barely addressed, and the overall pedicure felt rushed and incomplete. It was HORRIBLE. I also explained that my nails were crooked, extremely thick, uneven in length, pointed outward, had acrylic buildup around the cuticles, and looked poorly shaped overall. I was disappointed because I spent approximately $160 and felt the quality did not reflect the price. After sending that feedback, I received no response for an entire week. When I followed up, expressing my disappointment with the lack of communication, I was suddenly told that a staff member would be contacted and would reach out to me. I agreed and waited again. Nobody contacted me. I eventually called the salon myself and was told that their guarantee only applies if issues are brought to their attention before leaving the salon or within three days. The problem with that explanation is that I DID contact them within three days--I actually responded to their feedback request the very next day, on June 1. Rather than acknowledging that I had followed their policy, I was repeatedly told, "That's all I can tell you." What makes this even more frustrating is that my appointment ended at closing time, and I felt rushed out as the staff were closing the salon. The doors had already been locked and had to be unlocked for me to leave. I wasn't standing there inspecting every toenail because I trusted that the services I paid for had been completed properly, even though. I may not have gotten the massage I wanted. The quality of the work was disappointing, but the customer service afterward was worse. I made multiple attempts to resolve this privately before posting a review. I have screenshots of the feedback request, my response on June 1, the follow-up messages, and the later conversation where I was told staff would contact me. I understand that mistakes happen. What I don't understand is asking customers for feedback, ignoring that feedback when it's negative, and then later refusing to address the issue by citing a deadline that the customer actually met. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this salon based on either the quality of the service or the way my concerns were handled afterward.

Sometimes we are in and out in less than 15 minutes. They pay such attention to detail, its amazing. The cost? $8 for brows and $5 for lips...You can't beat that price anywhere and they are open later at night which is convenient. It is always busy and especially so on Saturdays so try to go in the evenings. We also have gotten pedicures and my daughter, who is extremely picky about pedicures, liked hers. Mine was OK, I have had better but they did an adequate job and the chairs are always full so most people must be happy with them. The nail stations are always full too so check that out if you need some nails. I had fake eyelashes put on once here and I was not happy with those. i do not think she was careful enough as to how she placed them and they fell off after a few days. I see alot of women getting them however so it might have been my issue and the fact I could not keep my fingers off of them since i was not used to them! To Mary D. On here that pasted 3 hours ago that she gives it 0 stars, how horrible and how fabricated this story you tell. Now I'm one for the truth and honesty. I sat right next to you as number one you said you liked the color, although not "honey bunny" as you called it. It would do. Also you did not complain through the entire ordeal, the lady next to me that was also there were taken back the level of theatrics. Starting to cry and standing in front of us emotional, they tried to help you and see what they could do to help numerous times. You got emotional and then complained about the color. I mean even looking at the picture these are old. You can clearly see you have issues with peeling and picking at the skin around your nails. Those ladies were so sweet and tried everything to accommodate you. She would of gave you antiseptic but you kept raising your voice intimidating her....not cool. Then after you make them feel horrible. You left and said it was fine that you will take them up on the offer to come back another time and get them redone but you were too upset now. I was still in the shop with the same customer sittint next to me, you then called in!!! I couldn't believe you paid for the service, they offered to fix, you left, and then was talking over them. It was so disruptive to the rest of us ladies that love it there. The ladies at Modern Nails always take care of everyone, after a time or two they remember your name. If I mess up a nail they will fix it if it's within the 2 weeks with no hesitation. I can understand being upset but to belittle and just keep going and in front of everyone standing there insulting them. Have class and respect for people, if you didn't like the color and/or service why wait for a full manicure to be finished, two coats of color, then pay and then still complain. I love this place, love the laughs I have here, and love these beautiful ladies. They are AMAZING!!!! We are all human, there is a respectful and ladylike way to conduct yourself. You are a beautiful girl but to have such a ugly attitude is pretty horrible. Businesses beware....you cannot make someone happy who complains about everything. To get what you wanted and still bash them and write a false review, shame on you. Seriously not appropriate and how much more degrading are you going to do these ladies. Anyone in their right mind as soon as they were hurt, even a second time would stop and say something. This is not right of you and woman to woman this is completely uncalled for. These women work hard, always will fit the last minute customer in and stay late, do an amazing job! They will also tell me upfront when I need a manicure and when I just need a color change so I pay only for what I need. They don't have to do that and they always do. I support there business, there ethics to make it right, integrity, and compassion towards you and anyone else.
