Selecting Modern Rebel to assist us was one of the first wedding-related decisions my partner and I made, and it was by far the best. We chose to have our wedding ceremony and reception at a historical mansion which, while beautiful, posed a unique challenge in that we would be responsible for sourcing all the vendors ourselves. We knew juggling them all would be stressful so, we set out on a search to find a wedding coordinator to help. We happened upon Modern Rebel and Amy responded in a timely manner, immediately offering to set up a call in which she could walk us through their packages. We knew instantly, in that first conversation that Modern Rebel "got us." Neither of us had ever been interested in a traditional wedding and Amy completely understood that without any judgment or shaming. She was incredibly knowledgeable, friendly and answered every question we had before committing. We settled on day-of coordination and embarked on the planning process armed with resources provided by them including extensive vendor suggestions (across all budgets) and a lifesaving checklist to keep us on track. As the date grew closer, Amy handed the reigns over to Britt, who is another absolute gem. I was just blown away by the thoroughness with which they prep for events. Britt reviewed every vendor contract ahead of our call and lead us through all the fine-tuning and smaller details that really made our event so special--things we wouldn't have ever thought of on our own. It all culminated in an epic and super detailed timeline that made things seem completely seamless the day-of. Once we saw Britt at our venue during set up, every ounce of anxiety and pre-wedding jitters, evaporated. Her cool confidence and warm smile put us as ease. If anything was going wrong, we couldn't tell and that was the entire point of hiring them in the first place. We also have to commend the team for their exceptional communication skills! We appreciated the flexible hours for touchbase calls, frequent updates on COVID restrictions (as they relate to special events) and the kindness with which they treated all our vendors. We had several outstanding vendors at our wedding-- unfortunately, Amy was not one of them. My partner and I are relatively detail oriented, but decided to hire a wedding coordinator to help us facilitate key events and troubleshoot for us on the big day. More specifically, we expected her to make sure any participants in the ceremony knew where they needed to be and when, to make sure all the events of the wedding day followed a timeline previously agreed on, and to identify and mitigate any issues that arose. Though we chose Modern Rebel's Amy due to the absolutely glowing reviews she had, she did only an average job with ensuring our timeline was followed, and we were decidedly unimpressed by her ability to adequately perform the other tasks. By far, the largest issue was that of ceremony audio. On Amy's recommendation, we purchased a wireless speaker, but though I, my partner, and the officiant were all at the venue at least 70 minutes before the ceremony began for pictures, Amy did not ask us to test the audio. To be clear, Amy said she tested the audio and made sure people could hear her, but that was likely due to the fact that she knew the correct way to use the microphone. Had she set aside time for the people speaking during the ceremony to practice, she would have found that they didn't know just how close it needed to be. Members of the audience, especially those from the last few rows, told me that the officiant's voice went in and out throughout the ceremony and they could not hear our vows at all (likely because my partner and I held the microphone too far from our mouths). After the ceremony, one of our photographers, who had immediately identified the problem, explained exactly how to use a microphone in a ten second tutorial. With this tiny intervention, we were able to make sure that our welcome remarks at the reception could be heard by everyone. Having spent many hours crafting our vows and ceremony script, it was very upsetting and frustrating to learn that so many guests were unable to hear them clearly, especially as the incident was entirely avoidable. There were numerous other, smaller issues that I will list here. I know that many of these things might seem trivial, but when you're hiring someone whose job, in large part, is to take care of all those small tasks that come up on your wedding day, these errors really do add up. * Our officiant was asked to come to the venue 90 minutes prior to the ceremony to "run through cues and test mic," but was instead, during "rehearsal" time, simply instructed to keep track of the AAA battery. In addition, upon Amy's assurance that one was not necessary, there was no podium for the officiant. Our officiant eventually found places amongst the foliage where she could store and easily retrieve her cards, our vows, our rings, etc.,but without Amy's assistance. * My father was to come under the chuppah to give his remarks, or at least tried to. Turns out, he couldn't fit. He's a very tall man and was too tall to stand under it. He was also at the venue 90 minutes prior to the ceremony, but was never asked to practice with the mic or stand under the tent. This led to his (and us, to be visible behind him) having to shuffle around during the ceremony, eventually reading his remarks outside of the tent. Pictures taken by our photographer of him giving these remarks were predictably awkward. * There was another venue with a name very similar to our venue's and it was only a few blocks away. My uncle went to this other location, and then notified my father, who became concerned that other guests might do the same. Instead of Amy posting a sign at this location, two of my cousins were sent there to redirect guests who mistakenly went to that location, eliminating the possibility for getting my cousins in any pre-ceremony candid pictures and reducing their time with the rest of the family. * Unfortunately, we had a heckler yelling at us from an apartment above the ceremony space. While I can credit Amy with making the call, it was my officiant who suggested the police be contacted. Small irritations continued to pile up at the reception venue (too numerous to detail with Yelp's word limit). But, it boils down to this: Amy makes a compelling pitch to couples. She says that she can leverage her objectivity and expertise so that the couple can feel confident in the decisions she makes in their stead. In short, we are paying her to free ourselves from the burden of the details and inevitable small problems of the day. But despite many of the issues that occurred being ones she could have prepared for, my partner and I do not feel that Amy delivered what she suggests she can in her pitch. Amy was very polite and she was respectful to my family, which I deeply appreciate, but, based on our experience, we would not hire her again. read more

I'm the kind of person who researches things to death before I pull the trigger. I do it everyday with hotels and restaurants, but when it came to my wedding, I knew I wanted the best of the best. I can't overstate how effective, great, wonderful, life saving and great to work with Modern Rebel is. I emailed several high-rated event planners through their websites, and not only did Modern Rebel respond first, they were also first with a proposal and quote. The paperwork was simple and easy, and from there, Amy took my half-planned, behind schedule event out of my stressed out, distracted hands and turned it into a showstopper. She took care of everything on her side of the list, and gently but firmly worked with me to get my jobs done (deciding who sat at which table). She has processes in place to make everything simple for the host, she knows the coolest vendors, and made all that seamless. She gave me options, but when I was too overwhelmed to look at options, I asked her to make decisions for me, and she chose perfectly. I questioned some of her suggestions, but trusted her, and she was 100% right about everything she suggested or advised. For instance, I had a band, but she suggested adding an MC, which seemed superfluous to me. But she made some good points, and I said ok. The MC was fabulous and without him the event would have dragged at times and some people would have been left out. Modern Rebel is not inexpensive, and I almost didn't hire them because I thought the price was too high, given that I had the space and the band booked and the invitations out. But then I thought about how much I was spending overall, on the whole event, and how skimping on a planner to make sure the whole event worked would be stupid. Even though I'm a super organized person and genuinely found a lot of joy from planning my wedding, hiring Modern Rebel and Ainsley was the best decision I made. If you are not organized, or planning a wedding fills you with anxiety, you need MR even more. Here's why: even if everything goes right in the lead up to your wedding, the month before is the time when things can and will go wrong. And you need someone with experience and know-how to help problem-solve, coordinate and delegate. Even if nothing goes wrong, and everything goes totally according to plan, you need someone on the day-of to ensure everything runs smoothly, that people show up on time and do what they're supposed to do, and that you can concentrate on enjoying your day. Ainsley and their assistant did exactly that for us. They helped coordinate a day-of timeline and then ensure that all our vendors stuck to it. They asked questions we didn't even think of. They followed up on their follow up. They remembered things we mentioned in passing on our first phone call and ensured everything went the way we wanted it to. Britt took care of everything, from writing the copy for my invitation, tracking RSVPs, creating a day of timeline, coordinating our rehearsal and a lot more things that I'm forgetting. Every detail from the beginning was on point- they were fast to respond and easy to get ahold of via email, and affordable compared to other vendors. But there was just something about it being our own wedding that made those skills fly out the window. Amy helped us prioritize what decisions needed to happen when. She followed up (repeatedly, relentlessly!) and pushed us to make decisions when we were stuck on things. Brittany was our DOC for our wedding. We had an intimate City Hall ceremony followed by an ~120 guest reception. I don't know how we could've pulled it off without Brittany's expertise! She contacted us about 30 days before our actual party to get all of our details and vendor information so she could start organizing and getting a timeline together. She's very personable and responsive and made the final month of our planning process significantly less stressful. During the day of, you get so caught up in the moment and there's so many things going on at once that it really makes a difference to have someone who knows what they're doing to tell you where to go and where to be (yet not be overbearing) all the while directing the vendors and taking care of whatever their needs may be as well. I remember the exact moment when my brand-new wife and I realized we could completely trust Amy. We had just gotten married, formally received all of our guests, been introduced as a couple and started eating dinner when we realized the dessert (donuts) had to get set up. Sitting at our sweetheart table, we debated whom to ask to make sure it got done -- but then we realized we didn't have to worry about it. Amy would handle it. And she did, along with a thousand other tasks that day, including some we probably didn't even realize had to happen. Throwing your own wedding is a task that you hopefully only do once in a lifetime; we had no experience with it. I know it's a cliche, but I mean it: I don't know how we could have done it without Amy's help. We had only hired Modern Rebel for our day-of coordination, but Amy went above and beyond in helping us beforehand with hiring help and purchasing recommendations. She and her assistant were indispensable in managing little things like decorations, taking care of problems before they got to us, and helping us handle stuff even she couldn't control, like nervousness about the uncertainty of the weather. Planning a wedding was an expensive endeavor and I regret, for instance, buying quite so much Brooklyn Brown Ale (we still have SO MUCH), but hiring Amy was totally worth the price, and may have been the best money we spent on the day.
