After 3 people at Rite Aid said this place was the best in town, I had to check it out! Turned out to be the WORST I've had EVER!!! I simply ordered sweet & sour chicken with fried rice. Can't be easier than that in a Chinese restaurant! Well, not so fast! The person who greeted me spoke no English. She had to call someone to take my order. The 2nd gal was awesome! Understood my order and said 10 minutes. No prob. Well, this was the very FIRST place I have EVER got sweet & sour chicken that had NO pineapple or other stuff! Instead, this was only deep fried chicken with a tub of sauce!! Nobody sells dry, deep fried chicken with just a tub of sauce!! I will NEVER, EVER go back here again, even if I'm starving!!! All that dipping every piece of chicken into sauce, and they give NO NAPKINS!!! ASK FOR NAPKINS WITH THIS CRAP!! This place really deserves 0 STARS!!!!! (Dear Modern Resturant!!! Guess what my fortune cookie said!? "When one makes a mistake it is his/her greatest opportunity to make a valued customer") I ordered take out; teriyaki chicken, #2 red curry and mongolian beef. When I got home I found out they gave me yellow curry and the teriyaki chick was HORRIBLE!!! The mongolian beef was okay, bland in flavor, too sweet and not spicy, it was the only edible dish. I called them and the lady on the phone and some other lady started yelling at each other. I didn't even get a hold on one second please, she just started yelling. They offered to remake the dishes if I came back. Being past 7 and well into dinner time, with a 15 minute drive each way and the fact the food is NASTY, I declined. I was told they would call me back. 9 p.m. rolled around and no call back. So...I called them. On this call it seems they barely spoke english and tried to avoid the situation with a lack of communication. I finally agreed to bring back my food, which was 90% full. We did give the food a try, not wanting to be wasteful, however it was GROSS!!! The lady said we ate 50% and only wanted to give me 50% of my money back. She then told me they don't even have red curry, I pointed it out on the menu and she said they don't have it even though it is on the menu. Soooo......they knew when I first called that they made yellow and not red because they never had red in the first place. Then they try to get out of and avoid the situation all together by not calling me back. If they can't do things right and follow basic procedure in the front of the house, it scares me to think what condition the back of the house might be in. In the end they refunded the total amount for the dishes I returned and then they told me I couldn't come back and for a second I felt sorry for the lady because she just didn't get it. Who comes back for NASTY FOOD? The location is run down, the building is dingy, the decor is thrift shop. This is not real asian food, it is a failed attempt to americanize asian food. Customer service is horrible. My wife was lied to, and was treated rudely. Even if the food is good, I don't want to invest in appalling employee behavior and lack of customer service. Even though Walla Walla has limited options and the Modern seems to have an old school following, I would avoid it completely IMO. read more

Ever since I discovered Pacific Express, I've had no reason to eat here. Food is bland and disappointing. The egg flower soup is gelatinous. I have fond memories of this restaurant but it's not even close to what it once was. read more

This restaurant was pretty bad. It seemed as if the vegetables came from a can and they were not the correct colors. The broccoli was about the color of the two stars i gave this restaurant. MSG was thrown out as if Oprah was running this business. I don't think that I'd go here. The only redeeming point was the staff. They were very welcoming. read more

This used to be a good place. Crispy Szechuan beef was amazing before ownership changed. I'm sorry but, beef that is chewy is not crispy. What a disappointment and when I took it back, they said this was crispy. No, I beg to differ. I used to eat the crispy Szechuan beef there. Great lunch deals, and all the menu options offer a TON of food for your money, and its probably some of the better Chinese food in town. I always go here when I'm craving oriental despite it being the farthest across town from my house that any place in WW could be. read more

Take out order was ready in no time. Fresh vegetable with great sauces, meat and shrimp. Fantastic prices and portions are large.

This was the worst meal I have ever had. When we entered the building it looked like the fish aquarium hadn't been cleaned since the beginning of time. Once at the booth, the walls had sauce & crap all over it. The whole experience was awful. Gross food, don't waste your time or money. Even though it was like $6 a meal. We've enjoyed The Modern for 35 years. Living an hour away it's always a treat visiting a few times a year. NOT ANY MORE :-(. New owners have ruined this one time awesome establishment. Food is horrible, service is worse, and my wife got horribly ill a few hours after our meal. It really could not have been any worse. We watched the waiter argue with a customer at another table. One waiter was trying to serve the entire place during dinner hours. The clerk at the register was a young child. Getting refills on our drinks was impossible. Really a shame. read more

The Modern used to be the best Chinese food in town, but alas, no longer. As a very busy person, I eat a lot of take out, and the Modern used to have the best crab puffs and sweet and sour pork available on this side of the state. Tonight, however, I received crab puffs that were soggy and a disgusting bright yellow color, along with sweet and sour pork that lacked the usual slew of yummy veggies it used to come with. As well, they neglected to add the hot mustard we ordered, which didn't matter much in the end because the crab puffs were so gross that even the mustard wouldn't cut it! When my husband called to see what could be done about it, they hung up on him three times! We are really not that picky, but this treatment was too much and we will not be back. read more

I wish I could give zero stars! Four of us went to dinner here on Friday night. The place was dead, and that should have been my clue to run for the hills! The only items we ordered that were edible was the egg flower soup and fried rice. Pineapple chicken - terrible, soggy and NO flavor, used all grisly dark meat. Fried Prawns- Dough was still raw, and was three times the size of the tiny shrimp inside. Almond chicken- looks and tastes just like the pineapple chicken, honestly you wouldn't be able to tell them apart if not for a few pineapple on one and a few bits of nuts on the other. Chicken Lo Mein- Soupy, no flavor and mushy. Barbecued Pork was so fatty we couldn't eat half of it. My husband politely (as possible) talked to our waitress in private about how terrible the food was. She seemed apologetic but who knows. We weren't looking to get $$ off our meal, and she certainly didn't offer. This place needs to focus more on taste and quality of food rather than quantity. read more

The server was so nice and asked if everything was OK. I just felt bad saying that the flavors were off and the food was clearly not fresh. It's true they do give you a lot of food. I think they have the best chinese in town as for taste hands down so for taste they get a big high 5 but for customer service I would recommend take out because honestly the customer service is terrible. I would actually give it a bit C for creepy last time I dined in the waitress was talking to herself rather loudly and rudely I wondered about her mental state I mean we were sitting right there as she talked to self and cleaned table next to us. The last time I got take out there was a lady giggling really loudly I"m assuming it was a waitress I have no idea what it was all about but it was really creepy. For lunch, I ordered Kung Pao Chicken and two pork egg rolls. There was absolutely no chicken in the meal when the dish arrived and the "pork" egg rolls had no meat inside. I asked them why I was being charged for a dish with no meat and all I received was a deer-in-the-headlights stare followed by an expressionless "really?" It is very clear they are skimping on their dishes. In addition, the overall meal was incredibly bland and lacked any sense of flavor, especially given I ordered the spicy Kung Pao. I also did not like that they served the sweet and sour sauce with a dollop of spicy mustard directly in the same container. Every other Chinese restaurant I've been to has the two separated and it was an inconvenience to keep the sauces from mixing. Bottom line, Modern Restaurant serves poor quality food and they skimp on key parts of their dishes just to save a buck. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. Bleep, end gripe. read more
