Scott Avery of Modern Tech Floors took out carpet in two rooms exposing extremely worn-down Doug Fir floors covered with copious amounts of carpet glue. Some parts of the floor had plywood patches which Scott replaced with vintage Doug Fir flooring that matched the exisiting material. Then, he sanded and refinished the floors. To complete the job, he added baseboard shoes and supervised the repainting process that a firm he recommended did. To assess the job, Scott lifted up our carpet in a few places to assess the state of our floors. Then, he proceeded to explain how he could repair, sand, and refinish our floors. I was impressed with his flooring knowledge and the time he took to answer all my questions in great detail. We asked Scott to complete all his work while we were on vacation for a week so we wouldn't have to live with all the fumes involved in a flooring job. He said that this wouldn't be a problem. True to his word, when we returned, the job was completely finished. Our new floors look so lustrous and beautiful that it's hard to believe that they are 86-years-old. I never imagined that the floors could look so great given how terrible they were before he started. Scott's attention to detail is evident in so many ways from how evenly the floors were sanded to how meticulously the baseboard shoes were cut and installed. Also, we were impressed with how clean our house was when we returned. We imagined that all the surfaces would be coated in wood dust to the sanding but house was very clean as Scott did great prep work and cleaned up well when he was done. Modern Tech floors refinished my floors in exquisite fashion. I had a lot of questions that I had researched on the process and Scott was able to provide excellent insight. Modern Tech refinished our entry way, living room, and 2 bedrooms. The entry way was heavily worn, walnut parquet which was refinished to appear brand new. The rest of the floor had been covered with carpet for 66 years and contained several areas of soiled wood. The floors appear brand new now. I was very impressed by the lack of dust upon our return. Scott Avery was referred to me by my stair contractor. He came by last week and looked at the job: a small one to refinish and match three stair treads/risers. A very small job indeed. He took a piece of the new material and one of the replaced pieces (to match to) and said he would come on Monday to show me the test work. No show; no call; and, no response to my messages. I contacted two personal refferals to provide estimates and sought a third opinion from Yelp, Modern Tech was on top. I called Scott for a quote, turns out he was working on a neighbor's home a few doors down. He provided a quote and ended up in the middle of three estimates. I feel a little bit uncomfortable writing this review; because, previously I had read the reviews, which all gave 5 stars each (it was these Yelp reviews that made me call this guy to redo my flooring!). He showed up at my house, and we had some discussion about alternative colors & types of wood flooring... etc. I spent about 30 minutes to show him all 5 rooms in mly house that needed new flooring. He took some measurements and made notes; also, he promised to get back to me with an estimate...He never did! I did not understand what was going on; and, I will never know since he never called me back. I cannot determine if he is really that good (like the other yelpers talked about). We had Scott install a brand new wood floor during a fairly good side remodel. The wood was installed well, but the sanding and finish was awful. Their sanding left the floor uneven and there were lots of sanding marks in the wood that could be seen from looking across the room. We had Modern Tech Flooring come back out and lightly re-sand the floor and re-seal it. This time when we came back into the house it was worst than before and beyond awful. There was dog hair in the finish both upstairs and down, and bubbles of something everywhere. There were even places where they totally missed putting the sealer coat on. At this point we felt like we had giving Scott enough of a chance to correct the issues and didn't want him back again. Scott took no responsibility this mess and in the end we had to pay a different contractor to come redo the floors by sanding them all the way down and starting over. We are now very happy with our floors. If you want to have to pay two contractors then Scott is the man for you. If not, look elsewhere! read more

Scott Avery of Modern Tech Floors restored the white oak and fir floors throughout our 1907 house, with amazing results. I am sure they look better than new. I am not exaggerating when I write that literally everyone comments on them as soon as they walk in the front door. They are a work of art. Scott and his team also restored the stair banister and added the missing baseshoe or 1/4 round that had been removed when someone carpeted over the beautiful wood. Scott is very passionate about his work and as a result is also extremely knowledgeable about wood floors. He actively looks to expand his knowledge to be on the forefront of his industry. Scott is AMAZING!!!! We had several bids, most of whom said our floors were garbage and they couldn't be saved. The one's that said they could, bid double what Scott bid. With modern tech we went from nightmare floors, with dark glue from tiles to BEAUTIFUL patina 100 year old fir floors. We needed a bunch of boards replaced and you can't even tell which ones, the match is so good. He's friendly and helpful and cleaned up perfectly. Our home value just sky rocketed. STRONGLY recommend. We went with another floor refinisher for the downstairs and regret not using Scott, there's a big difference. It doesn't always pay to go with the cheap guys. If you want it done right, this is your guy. read more
