I am giving 2 stars because the sale staff was very kind. If not her, I would give 0 star. I ordered the orange arm chair and came with a strand of hair baked into the chair. The sales staff confirmed that is indeed hair and she was very helpful to fix this issue. She ordered a replacement for it but the replacement also came with hair in it. Eventually, she got me connected with a product manager to discuss the problem and he was very rude. When he basically told me that I am wrong, I mentioned how the sale staff confirmed that this is in fact a piece of hair but he started to talk over me and told me not to trust the sale staff. He explained how that is not hair and it's a piece black fiber in a aggressive tone. It seriously looks like a piece of pubic hair. When I asked him if this isn't hair, then is it a part of the design. The answer was maybe and it happens. To sum it all, this $500 chair comes with pubic hair or " black fiber" baked into the chair. The combinations you can custom create for their storage units are immense -- so many fiberglass color options and the units are modular so you can mix match or incorporate into your existing decor without a headache. I just bought my first Modernica items today -- a 3 tier alpine shelf (walnut, the smaller one that fits on top of desk or sideboard) and a table top cylinder ceramic planter!!!! Honestly, I was skeptical. I'd been looking around for Mid-Century-ish daybed for awhile, maybe three or four years -- and while I noted Modernica, I never took the idea of buying from them seriously. The prices seem suspiciously low, comparatively speaking, and I dismissed their furniture as probably poorly-made and inferior. Wrong. Wrong, wrong, wrong. I was so very wrong. First -- they make their furniture. Themselves, with their actual hands, here in the actual United States. The quality is top-notch, and even with hairpin legs these daybeds are solid and tough. Second -- they sell their own furniture, they stand behind it, and they are all very rightly proud of their work. Third -- and finally -- they provide their own customer service. I ordered these daybeds one week before California shut down due to the pandemic, which necessitated a longer wait; the folks at Modernica kept me in the loop, kept me updated, and were more overjoyed than I was when they could finally deliver them. I love the random collections they have, but was mostly attracted to the Herman Miller chairs. I wish they werent priced for Sheikhs and Oil giants, though... $4,500 for a lounger? $2,000 for a honeycomb fruit plate? Are you kidding me? When you're spending money on furniture that the average Joe would refer to as mid/premium products the timeliness of delivery, customer service and quality needs to match. The last thing I need to hear is I need to sit on a NON-upholstered chair while we get our sh!t(quality assurance) together. 1st Issue.- ($2500)Bed came with some minor blemishes/scratches.. which we didn't make a big deal about 2nd Issue - ($900)Day bed cover arrives 2 week past their 4-8 week delivery window. In addition to being late, frickin buttons don't snap together. I ordered a case study ceramics planter from this store. It arrived damaged. Upon opening the box I found it had cracked into pieces. I am updating my earlier review. Soon after I contacted the store I was told a replacement was in works. I drove by this place for a few years but never came in until my husband brought up Modernica. We were in the market for new dining chairs so we drove up to LA and popped on in. We found street parking on a side street near by. It took us some time to actually order and choose colors for the chairs. They have little color chips that we took home for us to choose from. This place has some gorgeous pieces. We purchased an Eames style rocking chair made of light blue fiberglass with the lighter wooden base and are anxiously awaiting the guys downtown to put it together. Yeah, it's not the "official" Herman Miller one. But it's actually made of fiberglass, like the original chairs were made and they used to produce the chairs for HM before a falling out with Design Within Reach. The molds Modernica uses were purchased from Herman Miller so they are the exact same chair. Modernica's website also has a page about recycling fiberglass chairs (as if you are gonna throw one out anyway).. but that is DWR's big thing about why you shouldn't buy them from here. Personally, I've seen both versions and the fiberglass wins every time. The plastic one looks cheap/crappy to me. The woman who helped us was extremely sweet and helpful; she climbed up a ladder and got down the chair we were eying so we could take a closer look. The rocking chairs were surprisingly incredibly comfortable. I was actually pretty shocked. Would love to get a large case study shelving piece from here, but the prices are definitely steep. Will have to save up for that one and wait for next year's annual sale. I was a bit sad they didn't accept American Express. Luckily my boyfriend had his Visa on hand. Also, pleasantly surprised there was parking behind the store. In LA that is always a big plus! Update: Got the chair and it is amazing. Quick warehouse pickup and no hassles. They also have awesome/amazing sales- get to them early and line up. (Wait, maybe I shouldn't tell you that!) We were lucky enough to get a small case study until for $240 bucks, down from around $760. Wow. We've already received tons of compliments on it. We also bought the case study bed with hairpin legs (off of craigslist, but originally from Modernica). The quality is impeccable, even after years of use. read more

The products are first class, extremely well-built here in Los Angeles by craftsman that are paid a real wage and are provided with full insurance benefits, so when you purchase from Modernica, you can be assured that the products come from the United States, and are well worth the price point. That fact makes a big difference to me. The sales assistant, Athena was really cool, courteous and straightforward with no sales pressure whatsoever, she also provided some excellent design ideas. I've popped into Modernica since the late 90s and I am never disappointed. It's the sort of business that is hard not to love, especially now that they're the only ones doing legit fiberglass Eames shell chairs. Ever seen those plastic Herman Miller joints? Awful. In around 1998, I gave a friend a ride to the downtown factory and the owner gave us a tour of the whole space, from manufacturing to their amazing store of mid-century props available for rent. Flash forward 13 years. I've been looking for some chairs for my dinner table, which has led to me stopping by the showroom on occasional Saturdays to see what color shells they have in stock. Carrie is always passionate and knowledgeable, willing to get into a heavy discussion on color and composition and all that fun stuff, at the drop of a hat. Keep in mind that I've never bought anything from her. Cool, right? Today, en route home from meetings on the Westside, I stopped in to the Beverly showroom and recognized the chap who gave me a tour of the factory over a decade before: Jay Novak. He was warm and welcoming, showing me new items around the showroom and displaying the kind of passion that inspires someone to undertake the kind of (wildly successful) experiment that Modernica is. I asked about some pillows, and it turned out that only the ones on a rack (ok, in a Modernica storage unit) were on sale, marked down to $39 from $100. Jay noticed that I was having trouble finding two that worked together, and generously offered to extend the discount to ANY pillow in the store. (not the new ones, of course, but any of the older style they were moving away from) I wound up walking with some awesome wool hopsack pillows for my sofa (pea green and teal) for a hundred bucks round trip! Talk about satisfied customer!! And as I was driving home, I realized that this kind of customer service is simply part of the Modernica experience. They mounted a Nelson Bubble Lamp I bought on craigslist onto a floor stand for almost nothing and did the work while I waited. In the oversaturated MidCentury market of Los Angeles, it is comforting to know that firms like Modernica are still willing to go the extra yard to keep customers happy. You can say, it's an obsession that has not quite gone away since the old french boyfriend broke my freakin heart. But, not before he introduced me to the beauty of timeless design. I have a few originals. Not as many as I would like but enough to have me eating bread and cheese or ramen for weeks on end. The other pieces are from Modernica. I have a Charles Eames Replica Shell Chair in red that I purchased and good ol' crazy Sunny wanted to change the shell to another color, broke the chair and was heartbroken once again. I took it over to the manufacturer in downtown and guess what... He took one look at me, smiled, and gave me a brand new chair. Modernica makes the best quality replicas you will ever find. When you know that $3000 original is way beyond your reach, Modernica will help mend your broken heart. I love you. I have been in their showroom a few times when I lived in Los Angeles and ordered fabric from them for some refinishing projects but after my last order I will not do business with them again. Here is the breakdown of what happened: 3/21: I ordered a cyclone dining table through one of their dealers, was given a 4 weak lead time 5/14: I finally received the shipment (8 weeks after ordered). I opened the package and the base of the table had paint chipped off down to the bare metal. The box was not damaged but the base was packed poorly so it looks like it rubbed against the box while in transit. Not a big deal so I contacted them for a replacement. 5/29: After waiting another 2 weeks I received the replacement base. This one was packed better, but when I removed all the packaging there was a chip in the base that someone tried to touch up with a paint that didn't match. It was so sloppy I was annoyed that they thought someone wouldn't notice. I also didn't appreciate paying full price for a damaged item. I contact them again and sent pictures; they tell me they will send another replacement. This will now be 2, 80-pound bases I have had to try and repack and wait for the carrier to pick up. 6/16: Now another 2 weeks (12 weeks total from the order date) I receive the third table base. Everything looks great so I attach the top. As I'm wiping the top I hear a scratching metal sound and notice the table is wobbling. I look down at the base and the special bolts that attach the pillar to the base are not pushed in all the way. These are u-drive screws that require special tools to insert so I couldn't just fix it myself. Now I was very annoyed and contacted them since they had promised it would be inspected by quality control and packed well before being sent to me. I found a local shop that said they could fix the base for $75 so I contacted Modernica again and asked what they were going to do about this, either offer me a discount and I would fix myself or I would just return the table all together. I never hear back from them, but instead the dealer I purchased the table from said they could offer me a $100 credit. I didn't want to deal with this anymore so I took the credit, got the table fixed and could finally be done with this company. There is obviously a quality control issue and the customer service is lacking to say the least. This was the first "knockoff" piece of furniture I've ever purchased and I have definitely learned my lesson. I guess you really do have to pay the ridiculous amounts charged by Knoll and Herman Miller if you want a quality product. read more

Thank you Modernica for the AMAZING customer service! I bought three chairs a few years back, that I was unable to use. They remained boxed in their original packing, until I recently moved and finally opened them. One of the three chairs had a damaged leg and I was unable to properly fit the chair to the base as well. I brought the chair into the showroom with all of the original packaging. I no longer had the receipt. Athena was so helpful! They replaced the leg for a small, small fee and corrected the seat connection. I just picked up the chair and it's perfect! I have been just a little obsessed with the eiffel-based wire chairs designed by Ray and Charles Eames for many years now. After seeing them sprawled out between LACMA and the new BCAM a few months ago I knew they needed to be in my home sooner rather than later. Well thanks to the useless but fun tax credit we all got this summer and Modernica's very reasonable prices for the ergonomically and aesthetically perfect chairs, two of them are now mine. Simple, sleek, sophisticated and surprisingly very comfortable even without their leather pad, these will be perfect dining chairs or desk chairs for decades to come. Modernica had the best prices and I could pick them up locally so I called to place my order. Julia was helpful and organized and not only emailed me a copy on my invoice but mailed one to my home as well. Plus, despite being given a lead time of about a week, I got the call they were ready to pick up on Wednesday when I had called Friday afternoon. Huzzah! They are gorgeous, the staff was helpful if a little removed, and now my bottom is carefully cradled by Eames beauty. Also, park in the back! They have a lot with plenty of spots and the meters in front are constantly monitored by nearby parking enforcement vultures. read more

I read in Dwell magazine that Modernica does not have the approval of the Eames organization to make shell chairs. The Eames were concerned about throwing fiberglass into landfills so this is why authentic Eames chairs are made of plastic. I guiltily admit that I was still seduced by their dowel bar stools and ordered 2. Both of the chairs were defective. My sales person, Kari was very kind and accommodating but it was 6 weeks until the mess was straightened out. One of the stools is still wobbly. For $500 a pop they should be perfect. I don't know if it's just the bar stools or all of their chairs, but proceed with caution. BTW-you can get the same lamps and chairs from this guy for considerably less: inthome.com read more

This morning I got up extra early today from my dreams of Mad Men decor and mid-century style to await a delivery from Modernica. You see, two months ago I ordered a Modernica Case Study Bed from a local retailer in San Francisco. Everything looked great upon arrival. Except for one thing. They made and shipped the wrong headboard. Not a big deal. It's easy to fix, right? Wrong. A month after returning the wrong headboard, I receive the new headboard today. Unfortunately, the new headboard is the same as the one I returned. Fail! Fail! Fail! Now after two months, I still have an incomplete bed. An incomplete dream. :-( Will I have to wait another month to get the right headboard? Seems like this mid-century manufacturer also uses mid-century fulfillment practices. This review is for an order I placed online via Modernica's website. I needed a small side table, and decided to indulge a bit. I'd always ogled the Eames Case Study storage unit, and decided that I'd order a custom design via Modernica. The "design your own" function on the website could benefit from a little user interface finessing, but overall it was pretty straightforward to design the unit online and then work with a Modernica rep to ensure all the design elements were correct. The woman I worked with - Kerri - was so nice and professional throughout the entire process. She answered all the questions I had in a timely fashion. My experience with Modernica's customer service was great. Though it's noted on Modernica's site that it can take 4-6 weeks to have a custom storage unit built and delivered, it only took a few weeks to get mine delivered. It arrived packaged incredibly securely, and is a gorgeous piece of furniture. While it certainly wasn't a bargain, it is well-made and I look forward to having it around for many years to come. read more

Beware the new Alpine Bed. It looks great and is also featured at Design Within Reach, but is completely unusable due to the smell. We received ours in mid-Dec. A month later, the bed parts are still in our spare bedroom with the window open in the dead of winter being aired out from the toxic varnish/ laquer smell. I've NEVER ordered wooden furniture before that has off gased so much! I can't imagine anyone being able to just assemble and sleep on a bed that reeks the way that this one does. What they sent us is downright toxic and will need to be aired out for at least a month more before it's usable. Overall not a good experience. read more

The first two reviewers seem pretty enthusiastic for the Nelson Bubble Lamps, which are rad, but my main draw to Modernica are the Eames Fiberglass Chairs. I just went to their annual warehouse sale down off Alameda in LA. Most of the furniture was 30% to 50% off. Kind of incredible. They had a variety of mid century modern reproductions. However, I don't know if many people know this but Modernica uses the original Eames Fiberglass Chair presses, and they are THE ONLY COMPANY to make these chairs with fiberglass (just like the originals). If you go to room and board, which make a lot of similar products & authentic Eames good, you will notice that their chairs are plastic and more expensive. Anyway, I will only go to the warehouse sales to buy my modernica furniture, because i'm a poor college graduate, and the prices are so good. Also, the last sale they had original Herman Miller pieces and free wine. Oh yeah, and the guys who work there are hot. read more

Modernica is one of the true standouts in the furniture wasteland of Los Angeles. That's how I feel after visiting what seems like hundreds of shop looking for unique, cool, new (not used), artistic, quality furniture pieces. I give the company and it's furniture 5 stars, but need to give the showroom itself only 4 because of only two very minor things: 1) nothing has price tags (thus forcing you to act if you really like something) and 2) I wish there was 20x the amount of items! Never fear though, the staff is friendly and accessible. What most folks may not realize (or care) is that the furniture here is not cheap knock offs made in China. Modernica's furniture is detailed replicas and original designs hand crafted in good old Los Angeles. The pricing may be a little bit more, but considering the quality I think their prices are rock bottom cheap. Compare the replicas to the originals from Herman Miller, and you are saving 50%, and they are just as good or better. That is not true of all the knock-off replicas you can buy at Ashley or Plummers.. All in all, a great furniture store if you want to appreciate what you are buying. read more

Review for Modernica chair shock mount repair service. 2.5 stars but I'll round up for previous good experiences. I brought an early Herman Miller fiberglass side shell in to get all four shock mounts replaced. Shell had old metal prototype mounts attached. Chair was ready in about a week. They use a matte/clear epoxy to attach the mounts as opposed to black which is more visually appealing. Refinishing looked sloppy although mounts are sturdy. They did not remove all of the old epoxy or re-finish the fiberglass under the new mounts. For the price of the restoration I had higher expectations. Mount repair cost was $75. read more

A+ customer support! We've had all of our questions and concerns answered by staff that go above and beyond. We love Modernica's designs, so we wanted to stop by the showroom to scope out options for bedroom and office furniture. While we were there, we met Ingrid, who was incredibly helpful in explaining to us features and options we didn't know about, like the difference in structure between outdoor and indoor daybeds, the ability to switch out the upholstery on daybed, and yet-to-be-released items we might like. The showroom itself was lots of fun to walk around and had in stock every piece we wanted to see. Since then, we've been asking Ingrid lots of follow up questions over email about fabric options and item dimensions. She's been so responsive and thorough in her responses, not to mention extremely patient with all our questions. We finally placed our online orders last night, feeling pretty confident in our choices. I'll have to follow up later with how much we love the furniture. read more

I've been coveting a papa bear chair for years now, but after failing to find a reasonably priced vintage original, I decided to find a quality reproduction, as close to the original specifications as possible. I literally spent months researching companies and visiting furniture showrooms, but they all fell short. Either their chair's construction and materials were not very good, or it seemed as if I was looking at their chairs through a funhouse mirror; the proportions were way off. I was largely discouraged and almost gave up, until I found Modernica. I live on the east coast, so I could not visit their LA showroom, but I called and spoke directly with Kerri, who answered all of my questions and put my fears to rest. I finally placed the order online, and then 8 weeks later, the papa bear chair arrived, boxed and bubble wrapped like nothing I'd ever seen! The chair looks as good as I had hoped, and it's even more comfortable than I was expecting. I had sat in a few original chairs at high priced furniture stores, but Modernica's version is even more firm and supportive than the ones from Denmark! Also, the frame is solid as a rock, and it's clear this chair will last for decades. My only "complaint" (and I hesitate calling it that) is that the arms of the Modernica papa bear chair are just slightly thicker and puffier than the original. I realize I'm getting nit picky, and it's certainly not a reason to NOT buy the chair. The rest of the chair's proportions are spot on, which is no easy feat for such a curvaceous piece of furniture. Now I just need to find a way to keep the cat from sinking his claws into it. read more

Ordered a sale ceramic pot online. After almost a year, it became discolored with ugly markings and fading. After over 7 emails and communications back and forth to the website support and them claiming that the warranty had to be within 1 year (which I had to point out to them that it was), I was first offered 10% off another item. Then I was offered 30% off an item. All I requested was to have my defected pot replaced in same size since I already have the wood frame. Finally, I was offered $75 to replace my pot (regular price $125) BUT I had to pay to ship the pot back to the warehouse when there is a store? I felt like I was being punished for buying the pot on sale in the first place. So now, rather than getting a replacement per Modernica's "warranty", I have to end up paying more to get a replacement and I have to pay for the shipping. By the way, they told me that the warranty does not include sale items which is not noted on their website. After getting the runaround, I learned not to do business with them since they do not adhere to their warranty policies and make it very difficult for customers to do fair business. read more
