The two stars are for the selection and the variety. They have many of the big and small indie boutique designers and they tend to carry more than just one or two items per designer so there's depth. The missing three stars: the staff who are just awful. Awful. Awful. Awful. It's not a matter of snooty in my opinion. It's a matter of snooty, combined with disinterested, combined with ill-informed, combined with arrogant. So, a recipe for disaster. The even bigger problem is that you need the staff in order to function in the store. In order to display everything, they tend to have one or two of each item out, in the smallest available size, which unfortunately means you will have to engage with the staff unless you wear a XS. First you have to get their attention, which you would think is doable on a Sunday afternoon, with three staff members and a small empty store. Not so much. One sits at the desk and will not move. One stands behind the person sitting and scowls at customers--or I suppose potential shoplifters. And the third flits about and fixes hangers as you touch them, without inquiring if you need help. I think she mostly wanted to make sure no one moved the hangers, a little tough in a clothing store with packed racks of clothing. When I finally got someone's attention, I ended up trying on a lot of stuff and buying a decent number of items--yes, I spent money with a business that didn't treat me well because the selection was so on point. But, I know I'll never do it again--just not worth it. Pretending to be on a first name basis with Dries doesn't give you the right to treat people like garbage...I'm actively upset to be writing this review because they have great stuff all under one roof, but I'd rather drive around town to multiple stores to get my stuff than spend my money here again. To potential entrepreneurs, Silver Lake can support more than one store like this--please, open your store! read more

This store is a prank. I went in to buy potpourri for a friend--$35 a bag, which is completely reasonable--and I was told I had to wait for the wrapping. Meanwhile, there were at least two other employees standing around in aprons (lol), one of whom was instructing people on how to smell candles. NO I'M SERIOUS. I guess you can't ask a candle guru to abandon his post. Maybe 10 minutes pass before I get my gift, "wrapped" in a cardboard box tied with twine and a sprig of spruce. Good on you, Mohawk General. Anyone who puts up with you deserves what they get. read more

First off, I hate shopping. But I found this establishment to be very cool with a unique collection of goods not found elsewhere, at least not in one location. Additionally, I was surprised at how friendly and helpful the staff was. Worth stopping in, even if you hate shopping. read more

Snooty, snooty, snooty. Ask to see something and they'll try to discourage you from looking at it by telling you the price first in anticipation you won't make them lift a finger. I asked her if a pair of shoes could be special ordered, and she seemed very put-off by the request. I asked if she could call me back regarding the request, and when she took down my number, the glazed look in her eyes told me I wasn't getting a phone call back. And I haven't. read more

I'm such a fan of Mohawk General Store! I travel for work but when I'm home in LA I always try to stop in. I was just there over the weekend and they have a great selection of clothing and home goods. It is also a great place to pick up a last minute gift (I've been successful numerous times). As for their staff, I've never had a bad experience as they have always been nice and helpful. When I was younger I worked in retail and I know its hard to please every customer that walks through the door so give the girls a break! Silverlake is getting just like Abbot Kinney. Every time I shop at MGS, the sale associates turns me down my shop sprits because I always get the "stuck up" customer service form them. When I ask for help, they always give a face of "Do you have money? Are you going to buy this? I don't wanna help you if you don't." It's not pleasant at all. If I carry a couple thousand dollar bag and shoes, maybe I will have the normal customer service there? read more

Very interesting items sold here. They kinda sell anything and everything here with a hipster twist. The staff is friendly, the items are a bit expensive, but it's well worth just taking a stroll in this store. You'll be surprised. read more

Admittedly this store will not be for everyone but if you have somewhat hipster leanings (I use this word in the best way) then you will love it. It can be pricy but they have a really well edited selection of items. Cool men's sweaters, tees & socks share space with women's casual wear and dressier garb, men's & women's bags, apothecary items and great jewelry (much of it by local designers). I always pop in here for gifts knowing I will find something unique and thoughtful. read more
