Very cool store with artfully curated pieces for men, women, and home. The staff is absolutely awful to the point of comedy. I would love to spend money supporting small boutiques in my amazing neighborhood but the dipshits that arrange candles all day and ignore clients is laughable. Is having sales staff not greet customers a new hipster thing? Because I went to 9 stores along Sunset in Silver Lake today and only 2 of the sales people greeted me. The rest either kept talking to their friends or in one store (where it was super creepy), the 2 sales people would walk around and smile at us and then quickly look away. The cherry on the sundae was here at Mohawk where when I asked to try on a pair of shoes, the woman brought the shoes, mumbled something, gesticulated toward the mirror, mumbled something else of which I could only hear the word "socks," then seeing that I had socks on, walked away. This is unfortunate. Hipsters used to be cool and friendly. Now, they're too cool for school. Hipsters are about DIY, making your own stuff, art, reading, irony, fantastically affected style. It's about Pabst Blue Ribbon, bicycles, finding meaning and style in old stuff, sharing books and music, used bookstores and public art. Nowhere has it been about being too cool to say hi or not being helpful. Would Miranda July ignore you? I wouldn't get treated this way in Gucci or Chanel. I get treated better in Paris. Why is this trend starting now? Here? In Silver Lake? At first I thought it was giving you the space to shop, but this wasn't true. What really gets me is that not only were they not greeting us, they didn't even really want to help us. Are we not in a recession? Is there too much business so that you can act contemptuous of your customers? The difference between a sale and a pissed off customer who's not going to come back is probably just a helpful staff person. Maybe they'll rationalize and say that they don't want to sell to someone as shallow as I am who wants someone to say hi and be helpful. Maybe they only want to sell their wares to the in-the-know hipsters who know that the secret greeting is actually not greeting. Whatever. If your business can stay afloat by ignoring your customers, then more power to you. I'll be shopping somewhere else. read more

Come here for ideas! They do amazing merchandising here and are already displaying trends that you won't see housewives wearing until 2016. The place is totally overpriced and I assume they stay alive by selling a few pieces at a time. I don't think I'd ever pay these prices, even if I had the money, but the creative ideas you can get here is well worth a visit. read more

I've been to the Sunset store a handful of times over the years, usually when I've had an event coming up and was ready to spend big. The men and women who work there are so incredibly rude in a way that is almost hard to believe. Not just by clustering together and ignoring you completely; they act horrified if you do ask a question as simple as "where can I find this?" and can barely deign to answer. It's like a parody of an LA boutique. They're Pretty Woman-level rude. This happens without fail every time I've been there, and I'm clearly not the only one. There are plenty of boutiques in LA where you can spend money on the labels they stock and not feel like a monster just for breathing their air. Do yourself a solid and spend that money somewhere else. read more

Yeah, no. Great collection of beautiful, well-made things, much like the great collections of beautiful, well-made things at similar shops. The problem is their people. The pretentiousness would be funny if it weren't so off-putting. Mohawk - yo sh!t ain't that exclusive. There are many, many places in town offering a similar milieu. In Silver Lake alone you can throw a rock and hit a shop that buys from the same wholesalers. Most of these shops don't act like you have a skunk in your back pocket when you ask a question. I'd have dropped some serious coin at MGS but for a better service experience. Instead I'll be pointing my plastic and my scrilla and my recommendations elsewhere. read more

Granted I didn't have my receipt, and we're talking about a low cost item here, but the point is I felt gypped and undervalued as a repeat customer. Went in today to try on a pair of shoes I found on their website. The male salesguy or owner (whose name I didn't catch) was loudly entertaining a male customer, and had the female (who he described as "new here") do the dirty work. I wasn't greeted upon entering. I looked around quickly, and was not very impressed by the women's clothing which was simple and beautiful, but way overpriced. Because I was in a hurry, I approached the salesgirl to try the shoes. Mohawk sells them for $265, whereas you can buy the same shoes (not on sale) directly from the manufacturer for $245, and can find them for even less on Amazon. Oh, and the store is SO CLUTTERED! Stuff displayed on top of the couches and on all the chairs. I literally had to sit on jeans that were "artfully displayed" on the couch to even try on the shoes. I get that it's thoughtfully curated and all, but that doesn't mean it shouldn't be a practical space. read more

THE WORST. If I could give this business a zero star review, I would. The old woman who works there was sickeningly rude to me, barely looked me in the eye. Also, she smelled bad. The gal with the glasses, also rude and I think she got dressed in the dark. Terrible outfit. I was so excited to check this store out and give it the benefit of the doubt, despite stories I've heard about the owners and staff but I should have just stayed home. Yes, the items in this store are very expensive, but they carry an amazing selection of incredibly well-made, well-designed, high quality wares. I've found some of my pieces here--shoes, tops, jewelry, wallets, socks (you name it) here. I'm always excited to find out what the store's carrying at the moment. Everything is expensive here but it's stuff that's hip in that interesting yet classic way. Choose investment pieces to get bang for your buck. I've only shopped Mohawk General Store online, and it's been a great experience every time. I love the diverse selection and the designers they carry. I also love the androgynous styles and the way they pair items together. My packages always arrive neatly packed and it is apparent this store takes great pride in the items they select and ensure the customer feels that as well. read more

*this is for Mohawk's online store* lately, i'm obsessed with engineered garments and Mohawk is one of the few retailers in the states carrying this amazing brand. the new f/w15 line was on its way to stockists so I contacted Mohawk to see if they were going to receive a piece that I had my eye one. I received a prompt reply from Dominique affirming their receipt of the shirt. he helped me purchase it via paypal (EG is not available to purchase directly online, for reasons that are beyond me) and kept up great communication - even notifying me when their delivery arrived in store. the shirt was sent promptly and included a hand written note from Dominique thanking me for my business - in retail it's often the little, personalized things that set the great apart from the merely good. overall a fantastic experience - would highly recommend purchasing from the e-store. can't wait to visit the brick and morter in the future! read more

Fav shop on the east side of town. Have purchased beautiful jewelry, denim, and candles here. Saving up for a Dries coat as the carefully curated assortment of goods here could be pricey as well but totally worth the saving up. The staff here has always been friendly and super helpful. Not sure what it is about this store and the one in SF. I was super excited to check out this location. However, as I feared, we were greeted with the same snobbish attitude as the one in SF. My sister and I walked in and the first associate to see us was the Caucasian lady with short kinda curly hair. She didn't say hi. Nothing. She just looked at us with judging eyes because I'm sure we didn't fit the type of typical shoppers. The Asian girl that did work there was nice enough to ask if I needed a room to try on the blouse I had in my hand. In the end, it was a very uncomfortable shopping experience. I decided to just stop looking and walk I came in with intention to shop, but would rather not give my money to a place where some of the workers judge a book by its cover. Judging by all the other reviews I have read, I'm not the only that has experienced blatant attitude because I don't fit the clientele they may be looking for. Just because I may have been dressed a certain way doesn't mean I didn't have money to spend. I was carrying around an LV bag for starters, but guess that wasn't good enough. Guess the owners or management don't really care enough to address this with their staff. Eh well. I'll take my money elsewhere next time. read more

The store has a really great vibe and the staff is great and not super pretentious like other places I've been. Their selection and range of clothing and products is fantastic as well. People need to chill out on the sales girls here. I moved to SoCal recently from NYC and find the staff very kind and reasonable. (I have witnessed snotty salespeople times ten.) I never feel weird or put off by the staff's demeanor or attitude. They are always pleasant and always courteous to my needs. Kickass collection of men's designers with an entirely separate store just for menswear. Among their designers are Dries Van Noten, Acne Studios, and Le Maire to name a few. The man that I worked with was massively helpful and patient and really knew the brands. To top it off the store is big and beautiful, and wasn't too crowded when I was there. Definitely on my list of places that I'll be returning to the next time I'm in LA. read more

Stopped in this evening to kill some time before dinner...I was amazed to see the sandals I had been coveting on display! I thought their selection was smart and well-edited. The owner was very friendly and explained that her husband designed all but one pair of the men's shoes - which were all so great. To be honest, I was so happily surprised about the shoes - which I had been dreading driving to Santa Monica for - that I didn't pay adequate attention to everything else. Arrogant, non-existent to indifferent customer service. I've been in to Mohawk three times in the last four months, and not once, have I been greeted or even acknowledged. Best is when you stand directly in front of their hipster sales staff with a question and they hardly look up from whatever computer work they're doing. Could not care less that they have "curated", dependable marques or latest in the most-in 50s furniture--they need to seriously step up when it comes to customer service. read more

The two stars are for the selection and the variety. They have many of the big and small indie boutique designers and they tend to carry more than just one or two items per designer so there's depth. The missing three stars: the staff who are just awful. Awful. Awful. Awful. It's not a matter of snooty in my opinion. It's a matter of snooty, combined with disinterested, combined with ill-informed, combined with arrogant. So, a recipe for disaster. The even bigger problem is that you need the staff in order to function in the store. In order to display everything, they tend to have one or two of each item out, in the smallest available size, which unfortunately means you will have to engage with the staff unless you wear a XS. First you have to get their attention, which you would think is doable on a Sunday afternoon, with three staff members and a small empty store. Not so much. One sits at the desk and will not move. One stands behind the person sitting and scowls at customers--or I suppose potential shoplifters. And the third flits about and fixes hangers as you touch them, without inquiring if you need help. I think she mostly wanted to make sure no one moved the hangers, a little tough in a clothing store with packed racks of clothing. When I finally got someone's attention, I ended up trying on a lot of stuff and buying a decent number of items--yes, I spent money with a business that didn't treat me well because the selection was so on point. But, I know I'll never do it again--just not worth it. Pretending to be on a first name basis with Dries doesn't give you the right to treat people like garbage...I'm actively upset to be writing this review because they have great stuff all under one roof, but I'd rather drive around town to multiple stores to get my stuff than spend my money here again. To potential entrepreneurs, Silver Lake can support more than one store like this--please, open your store! read more
