I went to MOKO for a big girl haircut after the braid bar elite event from last week. The salon just had a really good vibe that I couldn't ignore, and they were offering new customers cuts for $45! Win! This review needs some backstory. I haven't had a proper 'haircut' since... well... ooooh... maybe... 6-8 years ago? I've been bouncing between the Aveda hair school to the Chinese Salon where I get my nails done (they didn't even use scissors- just a razor!). I went to the Chop Shop on South Street for a hot one... and The Hair Cuttery... I'm a mess! So with some encouragement from those who care about the well-being of my head (my mother), i was encouraged to spend some money on a haircut for once, and try something different. I got to MOKO right on time after grabbing a latte from my favorite coffee shop up the block. They brought me down to the dungeon of shampoo- which actually was lovely! I got some water, and a shampoo for the books. The products they use are all organic and smelled like relaxation. Just breathing felt calming. I was brought upstairs and reunited with Jackie who had done my braids the previous Friday night. I showed her a few pictures of what I was thinking, but made sure that she was aware that i don't own the tools with which to do anything too cool- so to keep it low-maintenance. She was picking up what I was putting down. About 45 minutes of great conversation later, fast forward to the cutest little mid-length hairdo I've ever had! I couldn't stop checking myself out in store windows on the way home. When I got home, my boyfriend was THRILLED to see how good I looked, which also felt nice :-). I was hoping to leverage the fancy 'do for a nice dinner, but he had of course thrown his back out at work that day, but this gives me motivation to figure out how to make my hair look like this again on my own (from time to time). I save $10 if i book the next appointment during the 1st one... so I did that. I've parlayed into the world of adult-haircuts! Life is good. read more

My mom and I had such a lovely experience here. We were celebrating my moms birthday and wanted to get services done together. They only have one esthetician so my mom got a facial and I had one of their scalp treatments with wash and blowout. I wasn't sure what to expect with the scalp treatment but it was truly incredible and relaxing. Both of the ladies helping us took their time with our services. The owner of the shop, Monique is so friendly and kind. She really enjoys talking about their services and products and went out of her way to make our experience here enjoyable and relaxing for my moms birthday. Oh! They also use intelligent nutrient hair and face products. This is an amazing, non toxic line of products which I don't see used in the Philadelphia area ever. Not bald and lovin' it. :) After frantically calling around town looking for a place open at a convenient hour on Sunday, I decided against going at my head with a pair of hedge clippers and finally found MOKO here on Yelp. As soon as I saw the girl with the spiky faux-hawk looking style walk in a few seconds ahead of me, I knew I was in the right place. (I was almost tempted to ask for that instead lol) She turned out to be my stylist, Rachel, who left me with a snazzy new hair cut after about an hour or so. I was a little worried at first, as I always am with a new salon. Because many people either don't know how to handle my hair, or try to convince me to get a ridiculously priced relaxer. Thanks, but no thanks. (This salon doesn't even do relaxers or anything that uses harsh chemicals, it's all organic just like the stuff I use at home!) But I was in good hands; Rachel actually took the time to look at my hair ahead of time and asked me about what I normally did to it, so she knew as soon as I got into the chair that we needed to go for the flat iron first. Dried ends gone. Now running my fingers through my hair feels like ':D' instead of 'B|'. My favorite thing about the salon: hands down, the atmosphere. It's clean, neat, and organized without being snooty like certain other Center City Salons-everyone is super friendly, (even the girl at the front desk) and maintains the "earthy" vibe without being overly hippie-ish. I've been coming to MOKO for a number of years now and have consistently been happy with my haircuts. As someone with sensitive skin and very thick, coarse yet slippery Asian hair, it took me a while to find a salon where the products would not give me an allergic reaction (removing just about all Chinatown/SW Philly places from the list), but where the hairstylists could deal with my specific hair type, and I'm really glad I found MOKO. I've never considered myself too adventurous with hairstyles, but was recently going back through old pictures with a friend and realized that since I've started going to MOKO, I've tried side bangs, straight bangs, a pixie cut, an angled bob, etc. - all a far cry from the basic, unchanging haircut I'd had for years before. I felt comfortable trying out all of these hairstyle changes because I knew I could trust Monique and her team. I also like that the stylists at MOKO ask questions about what you like - and they remember the answers. A few visits back, Monique had asked me how much effort I'd like to put into styling my hair, and I said something along the lines of "none". Since then, all of my haircuts have looked awesome without too much styling or blowdrying effort on my part. I've had my hair cut mainly by Monique, but also by some of her other stylists, and I've always left satisfied. Great Place, lovely people! This place is my new favorite. Thanks to Monique, who btw is also the owner of MOKO. She is so professional and yet very welcoming and comforting! This was the first time I visited MOKO with my wife. We both got our hair done and we absolutely loved it! The vibe of the place is so fresh and relaxing with so much space and natural sunlight. And yes, not to forget they are extremely careful in taking right precautions and care due to COVID. They sprayed us with some natural sanitizer on our hands, took our temperature readings and made sure everyone was 6 ft apart. Masks were on all the time! I experienced Moko for the first time yesterday and had the pleasure of getting a Brazilian wax with one of their newest staff members! I first want to start off by saying that I was greeted with a very warm and kind receptionist. As someone who has a hard time relaxing, I felt relaxed immediately upon arrival. Wish I got her name! But she had an adorable pixie cut and was super sweet! After waiting for a very brief period, I had my wax done by Tracey, who made me feel extremely comfortable right off the bat. I will say I am not very shy when it comes to getting waxed, but it was very clear she was extremely concerned about my comfort level, which makes her perfect for first clients who haven't been waxed before. She introduced this new "wax", that actually isn't wax... it was some sort of an organic soy natural hair remover, but it was amazing! I didn't even flinch. Every time she pulled, I was fine. (Keep in mind, I have a high tolerance for pain, but it still was by far the least painful wax I've ever had...) Basically, hands down, the best wax I've ever had! I had to write a review because I can't remember the last time I had a wax that didn't end in disaster. This was smooth, super fast, and extremely efficient. Tracey officially has a new client! I had an amazing haircut experience at Moko! I had won a gift voucher here a while ago through a Yelp event, and after the sun finally came out, I decided it was time to chop off a bunch of my hair and get a 'lob' (long bob). Monique (I think), the owner, was the one to cut my hair and she did an excellent job. I have curly/wavy hair that has a tendency to poof out when cut short, but Monique did a great job cutting my hair in long layers and cutting it the right way - my hair is light, manageable, and the frizz is more controllable now. I didn't have to give her too much direction either - she more or less knew what I meant when I described my hair problems and knew how to fix it. The salon is really nice too, and they use organic products which is a plus as well. Overall great experience, definitely recommend! read more

Joe and Vince are awesome! They were both so nice and welcoming. Joe did my balayage highlights and they look really natural and beautiful. Vince did the toner and discussed the color in depth with me and really listened to make sure I got the color I was looking for. Gina is a great stylist and MOKO did an awesome job with wedding hair and make up for myself and my bridal party. For one, I'm a crazy person when it comes to make up - I'm not one to experiment, I know what I like and try not to deviate from it. Melissa, Gennylee, and Monique were great working with me in spite of this. I actually felt sick the day of my make up trial - that combined with my neuroticism re: make up and I wound up leaving during my first appointment before we could finish. Monique was great and had me reschedule so we could finish up and made sure I was comfortable with everything. On the day of the wedding, everything was perfect - we stayed on schedule (which I know from experience doesn't always happen when it comes to wedding hair and make up) and Monique allowed me to pay in advance so it was all taken care of for the day of. She also provided cupcakes and orange juice for the bridal party and helped me arrange some refreshments that I had brought in. Everyone looked great, had full bellies, and felt super-happy - it was a great way to start the festivities. I'm so grateful to MOKO for taking such good care of us. Aside from their wedding services MOKO is a great salon in general. Gina does a great job cutting my hair every time - she takes her time and really listens to what I want. They have awesome organic products, the place is super clean and bright, and I've never had to wait too long either to schedule an appointment or on the day of my appointment. I rarely... -give 5 stars -write a review the same day as my experience -find salons that offer haircuts for less than $40 in this city -receive a thorough pre-haircut shampoo with an awesome scalp/neck massage -get to fully discuss with a stylist what I want done, what I've had done in the past, how I style my hair, how much time my morning routine takes, my hair's natural tendencies, etc. -am completely satisfied with a new haircut The staff at Moko is great and Jessica, my stylist, gave me a totally versatile haircut. I felt like she was a mind reader. Not only did she discuss everything before the haircut, she also explained what she was doing as she was cutting and gave me styling tips and instruction. The end result is a long shag cut that I can style different ways (or not at all) with side bangs that can be worn on either side. She was social, but not overly talkative, which I really appreciated as a nice contrast to the usual excessive, chatty, superficial conversation that goes on at salons. Moko uses only organic products (which smell great by the way) and offers haircuts on Tuesdays for an astonishing $29 to first time clients! The bad thing is that the regular price is a bit much for me, but I had such a great experience, I know I'll be back anyway. read more

Curly/ coarse hair that went in for a color correction consultation. The fact the salon offers a free consultation is great.. Anyhow wasn't sure what to expect bc of my hair texture. I wasn't going for a cut or curly hair treatment but just color ... And as far as I knew they weren't experts in my texture, but had amazing reviews for their coloring technique. So I went ... Ashley totally understood why I didn't like what had been done to my hair the week before at another salon. She was also very realistic.. She said it wasn't as bad as I thought and could be an easy fix- who admits that?well I appreciate the honesty - and her patience and just down to earth nature. Very knowledgable about color.. And I ask a lot of questions which she answered- and it just made me realize how complicated color probably is. The moral of the story is she fixed it!! And it's exactly what I wanted which I wasn't even sure considering I was going back for a fix. Def give them a try. And if you have super curly/ coarse hair like me and are super sensitive about who touches it especially for color- she's legit! read more

Monique is a wonderful hairstylist - she understands more about the way hair lies and grows than any other hairstylist out there and takes the time to explain how to style your hair after the cut. (My hair is slightly wavy and has a lot of natural twist and turns that make styling it difficult.) My hair even looks decent 7-8 weeks after a cut, which is pretty impressive. Haircuts are around $60, but well worth it if you have problem hair or want a great cut. And the products they use and sell are delightful. Have recommended this place to at least two friends who decided to give it a try and they also love it! read more

I'm updating because its been about 6 months since my first review. In that time I had a keratin treatment done, convinced my fiance to give Moko a whirl (he goes more than me now), and proudly chopped inches off my hair last visit. Let's start with the keratin treatment. It's very difficult to find someone who does organic keratin treatments in the city. My hair was so soft and luxurious after I couldn't stop touching it! My fiance has become a fan of the salon as well. Although we don't see the same stylist, he raves about the place to his friends. My last haircut was my favorite. 2 inches chopped off. A nice new dark color for the winter. I left feeling amazing once again. I can't say enough about this place. It's like visiting with great friends and you leave feeling beautiful. Got an AWESOME haircut here a few months ago and never wrote a review! Here I am now :) Monique is so friendly and warm, and the salon was super cute and cozy. I came on a Sunday and she could accommodate me, which was a huge deal! Especially since I had a really high maintenance haircut and color--I got purple put in, and it was an EFFORT bc my hair wouldnt lift quite right. Monique was super patient (like 3 hours of work patient) and skilled and I went home pretty happy. Because of the nature of my hair, a few days later some strands started going blonde, and I called Moko, and Monique was super happy to go over the color and rectify the issue--she even explained to me how and why it happened and advised me on how to care for my hair to make sure it stayed vibrant. Moko is definitely expensive for me, but was so worth the price and the service for the big turn to purple. It's the place to go if you want to try something new and need someone patient and skilled to do something fun with it! read more

So sorry for writing this update so late but, better late than never! Ok so I was going to MOKO since 2014 while I was preggo with my son. I was using the fabulous Melissa. I was a faithful client going back every 4-6 weeks for my appointments without fail. So I call in to schedule to my appointment and they say the usual " ok you're all set see you on blah blah blah day and time" They even called me back to confirm the day or two before. I get there and they tell me Melissa isn't there because she had an emergency or some sort but assure me there is someone there that can still help me. As I am led downstairs by the replacement, she then tells me that the owner was not being honest and that Melissa is no longer working here and that she is not allowed to tell me where she is. I was upset and felt played, but I needed my brazillian done and had travelled from the other side of the city (Wyncote) so I allowed Samantha to do it (she was trained by Melissa) and she was actually good. I did admit to her that she probably wouldn't see me again if I could find Melissa new location. She understood and we exchanged contact info. I wanted to write this because I felt as a loyal long time customer I should've been given the choice to continue being a patron at their location. Instead they misled me to believe that Melissa was still working there when clearly she was not. I did end up finding Melissa and she is the owner of her own successful business called Maebee's Beauty Studio.!! read more

LOVED IT! I went on a Tuesday when they have the deal for new clients of a $29 haircut (score!). I got Rachel, totally randomly, wasn't sure what to expect. They gave me tea while I waited (always a plus) and have the cutest dog named Rupert there. Rachel came down and gave me a consultation (free) where we just sat and talked about my hair, what I usually do with it, what I want to do with it, and any constraints I might have (job says head must not be shaved, etc.). A lot of places will charge you for something like that, but not Moko! She gave me a cut that FITS MY HAIR. That's right - I don't have to fight with it to make it look good. In fact, if it dries naturally, the cut will look even better. No more straightener - ciao ciao! And it looks WONDERFUL, is exactly what I wanted. Couldn't be happier. Their normal cost is $54, which I don't think is bad. This is definitely my new spot. read more

I've been a client of Emily's since I've lived in Philadelphia and she is the BOMB. I'm one of those people who's always nervous about getting their hair cut, I'm very apprehensive about even a trim and (admittedly) a bit picky. Emily never lets me down. I leave this place feeling awesome every single time. Even when I can't explain it well, she somehow always knows what I want and cuts my hair even better than I'd imagined, PLUS her styling skills are AMAZING. I drove from DC to visit this salon, more specifically-Emily. It is a beautiful space and everyone was really friendly. Emily did an amazing job and was open to my reference photos and we discussed all the elements of the cut. I have long hair and was looking for a little layering and baby bangs. She did some precision work on my bangs, which are super short and it was the best they've looked. It's been about 6 months since I got my haircut (way longer than I like to wait but philly is far!) and it's grown out wonderfully. She did some big soft curls and didn't overwhelm my hair with product. I'm still shocked at how affordable it was compared to similar salons and caliber in DC. Fabulous brow tint! The color lasted about 3 weeks, though I could have gone 4 if I wasn't picky about my brows. I made a same-day appointment, arrived almost half an hour early (oops), and everyone was very kind, and made sure to offer me water and tea. Had to update to write a second five star review (would give more stars if I could!) because at the coaxing of my beautiful and awesome stylist Rachel, yesterday I got my first facial ever. It was not just a facial but an hour long ayurvedic facial! I am not one to put stock in this sort of thing. I have never gotten a massage, do not get manicures/pedicures, and am generally against all things "pampery." But Gab is wonderful, the facial was fantastic, and my skin looks SO even and clean. She incorporates the best massage ever and all of the products that she uses smell and feel great. As I am a fan of all natural products this salon met all my wants :) Even on short notice they were able to take me for a cut/blow dry and waxing appointment on the same day (joy!) They have an awesome and friendly staff! As soon as I came in I was ushered into their waiting room and brewed a fabulous cup of tea to ease off the cold winters chill. I love Moko. The product they use has aroma therapy and it calms me into a almost a meditative state. My experience here is great. I have had all of the hair stylist before and they are all very nice and genuinely interested in conversation and what you want done.
