Moku is great because they are inexpensive, have wonderful customer service and instructors who truly care. When you go, make sure to request Ricky - he is amazing! I am a teacher and I can honestly say that he is the best teacher I have ever met in any capacity. He was knowledgeable, funny, patient, encouraging, sweet, and so much fun to be around. He goes above and beyond to make sure you leave loving to surf. Ricky helped us feel safe and supported the whole time. This was especially important to me because I am 47 and have been battling cancer for over a year, so I was not an ideal candidate to learn. His compassion and chivalry spoke volumes about his character and commitment to making sure we had a great time despite all of the pain I was in. It was like learning from a best friend who truly cared. My sons and I were able to stand up the first time and caught many waves. We created memories that will last a lifetime. Ricky's enthusiasm and constant support kept us motivated and smiling throughout the entire session. Best shop the customer service is amazing the instructors are great. It's definitely worth the price. I recommend you book online since they do get booked fast. Best experience of the entire trip to Waikiki, hands down! We were welcomed and treated just like Ohana as soon as we stepped foot in the shop. Everyone was super cool. My sister purchased a Groupon for surf instructions for our teenagers and Isaiah did such an awesome job working with them both! Both were able to get up and ride a wave within the hour - SWEET! Later in the day, we ran into him further down the beachfront and he remembered the kids and made sure to say hello! We came back after lunch to rent a boogie board and happened to be greeted by Brian, the owner. When we told him we wanted to rent a board, he treated us in true Hawaiian fashion to a great deal and even offered to lend us a couple of chairs free of charge. Although we had been in Hawaii for a couple days by then, it was at that very moment that I truly felt like I was on vacation in paradise!!! Location just a couple blocks from the beach.. our instructor was hands on and got us comfortable on thr water and on the board. We all were able to stand on multiple runs. This review is for my rentals from Oct-Nov 2020. For some reason, I had this review saved in my draft and never posted it. I really want to give this place a 5 star review because without this shop I probably wouldn't have surfed nearly as much as I did during my month and half in Waikiki. This shop is really convenient and well priced but it has a few bad apples there that are all attitude and no aloha. I've been renting boards from this place almost every other day. The good stuff: * The young Asian guy at the shop is extremely helpful about different surf breaks around the island. He checked up on how my session went when I returned one of the boards he recommended. He also greets everyone as they pick up and return boards. * My friends took a lesson with one of their instructors and got hooked on surfing. They said the lesson was awesome and they had lots of fun. * The board rentals are a good deal. It beats checking your own board through the airport and carrying it to the beach from the hotel and back. The shop is only a block away from the beach. * They have changing rooms and restrooms in the back where you can change in and out of your surf clothes. Most other shops in the area don't have this. * They have a huge variety of boards for surfing Waikiki waves from big soft tops for absolute beginners to nose-riders and performance boards. * Some famous Hawaiian surfers hang out here every now and then. The bad: * There's one guy there who really don't give a shit about his job and act like he's doing you a favor by renting a board to you. If you accidentally rub him the wrong way or ask beginner questions, he'll make sure to talk down to you and make you feel like shit. I saw it played out often like this: Customer: "Can you pick out a board for me?" Guy: "I dunno your level, why don't you tell me what you need" Customer: "Ok, does this one look like the right size?" Guy: "Probably, you want the board or not?" Customer: "Can you put a leash with it?" Guy: "I work at this shop, don't tell me what to do. I'll get you set up." * One of their instructors is such as asshole out on the waters. He would yell at people out at Canoes to get out of the way of his students and scold people for cutting off his students when he sets them up for a wave. When the students are padding back to the break, he would catch a wave or two in between and drop in on everyone else surf. I wish I was joking. * This local I've never seen before randomly tried to pick a fight with me at the shop when I was picking up a board this one time. Everyone including the staff just stared at us while he was yelling racist stuff at me. I still have no idea why to this day and only the kids hanging out at the shop came up to me afterwards to check if I was okay. It sounds like this is not the first time that happened and the workers don't seem to care that their customers are getting harassed. * When it gets busy in the afternoons, you can sometimes wait in line for 15-30 mins for the staff to casually bring boards out from the back while they chat with their friends hanging out at the shop. The shop often runs out of boards during peak hours, especially on the weekends, so you have to wait for people to bring them back. * A handful of their boards are not in the best condition. They use ding tape and wait until the boards gets pretty bad before repairing them. I've even picked up one board that was slightly waterlogged and floated lopsided. Good thing is, they don't seem to charge people for dings on the rentals. The convenience and price can't be beat here. They're open from sunrise until after sunset just a block away from the beach and some of the best longboard waves in the world. A few of the staff here come off rude and blunt so don't take it personally. If you're a beginner looking for rental boards, this might not be the best place. If you need more guidance and help, there's plenty of shops around that street corner that rent boards for around the same price without the attitude. Most of them don't open as early and stay open as late as Moku. If you want to rent better boards, go to Quality Surfboards on the other side of Waikiki. It's a much longer walk to the beach and the prices are slightly higher but they will set you up for success with boards in better condition. It's also closer to Pops if that break interests you. Chances are, the guys at the shop won't tell you this even if you ask. If you're not a pro, go surf at Canoes and not Queens. Looking out at the waters, it's the waves to the right of the Duke statue where beginners and visitors are tolerated. The left side is Queens which is where locals surf and a few of them are extremely territorial, especially when the conditions are good. read more

My Birkenstocks were stollen from the shoe rack that the employee told us to store them on while we were in the water. When we returned and realized they were gone, none of the 4 employees we talked to made any effort to help us or make things right. They basically just said "someone took them, sorry." I have never surfed before and I am so happy to have taken a surf lesson with Ray!!! My boyfriend and I did a semi-private lesson and Ray had us up on the boards in no time. He was patient, super knowledgeable, and the best "ocean Uber" for us newbies to surfing. They provide the boards, rash guards, and storage for all of our stuff. All you have to do is carry the boards across the street but the savings was worth it. Frankly, Ray is worth more than what they charge!!!! We highly highly recommend Moku's!!!! I did my first ever surf lesson in 2020, and started getting much more serious about surfing in 2021. I credit Moku and its instructors for teaching me how to surf. I took around 5 lessons from Moku throughout 2021 and rented from them countless times before I finally got my own board. Being so close to Waikiki Beach, Moku is a centerpiece of the surf community in Waikiki. They provide some of the most affordable lessons and rentals, plus they're only a block away from the beach! They're more than just a tourist shop though. Locals come to Moku to store their equipment, do repairs, and purchase gear. Of all the instructors I worked with, Brian was the one that turned out to be most helpful for me, and I paddled out with him for multiple lessons. I've also had friends come to Moku who have had great experiences with Isaiah and Ray. read more

Educational, but not enjoyable due to lewdness and slightly condescending attitude towards the ladies: We came for a surfing lesson and were initially delighted to find that our instructor was Louie. However, during the lesson, he made sexually-suggestive, lewd remarks towards the ladies in our group and inherently believed they were somehow inferior surfers, before touching the water. This was irritating and left a sour taste. There are concrete examples below. Despite the cons, I've left 2 instead of 1 star, because we did learn how to surf and the lesson was well structured; I would not recommend for groups with ladies. Cons: - Upon arrival, Louie immediately checked out one of the ladies in our group, then asked "Can you swim?". She responded yes, as both ladies swim competitively. - Phrases like "Good girl", or "don't turn him on" and slightly inappropriately touching the surfer while she was practicing form (her knees/thighs, lower back almost on her behind). - While on land, before jumping into the water, he told the ladies that they "couldn't know how to" or "wouldn't be able to" leap up onto the board in one go, instead of getting up in steps. - In the water, saying to ladies: "No no you're not ready for this wave. This big wave's for him". You could say it was some 'skill' the instructor saw in the guys, but given his prior sexist remarks, I believe it's a bias. - The water shoes and wetsuits we donned were pretty smelly and likely not sanitized. Never mind COVID, even pre-COVID this would've been pretty unsanitary. Pros: - Louie knew what we needed as students: He had us wear water shoes, to protect our feet from being scraped by the rocks in the sand. He brought a cart for the surfboards, to make it infinitely easier to carry. He also launched us into waves, so that we would learn the most fun part of surfing, which is standing up on the boards. - He was proactive as a teacher: He gave us pointers on each run for where to improve. He would make fun of us for doing silly things -- for me, he said I looked like a chicken for sticking my head out. It worked for me, because I no longer stuck out my head, for fear of looking like a chicken, but this could be seen as jarring. I listed it as a pro, because he was attentive and had the skill to know what needed improving. Overall: good learning experience, but poor experience overall for the condescending attitude and lewdness. I would not come back or recommend, if you have any asian ladies in your group. read more

DO NOT COME HERE!! I recently went with my family to rent surfboards and have a surfing lesson here. As soon as we got there, we were greeted by Joel who was extremely kindhearted and fun! During our lesson with Joel, another employee, an older man started teaching us in Joel's lesson without introducing himself, so we had no idea if this was another instructor or just some guy who thought he knew everything. This older man was callous, loud spoken, and obnoxious from the beginning. After finishing the in class lesson, we head out to the beach! This older man comes with us (so I realize he is an instructor) and doesn't bother to ask any of us for our names (Joel did). So we paddle out into the ocean (I'm with Joel) and start attempting to surf! Throughout our time in the ocean with both instructors, I realize the older man is addressing me by "girl"! for example, "girl get off the board" "girl turn the board". This man is YELLING at me rudely! I am doing nothing wrong, just trying to surf, and this man is rudely yelling at me in front of other people!! Reminding you I have no clue what this mans name is, and he hasn't bothered to learn mine. Joel is sweet the entire time, and emphasizes that he wants us to have a good time. This other old man couldn't give a crap about anyone having a good time. Joel is telling me to stay on the board because there are rocks and coral close by. This older man is YELLING at us to get off our boards 75% of the time! During this, I'm thinking in my head, I don't want to get off because I always land on hard rocks and coral! I don't want my feet to get scratched up! So Joel is telling us one thing, and the other instructor is telling us another thing! How are you going to allow Instructors with completely different teaching styles to teach a group! I ended up doing well surfing, but cut my foot on coral reef and had to get five stitches! After realizing I was cut bad, I got ahold of the older instructor who then told me to surf one more time and then go in. As I am going back to surf with a huge cut on my foot, this older man grabs my foot and shows all the parents with their kids my foot while saying, "SEE! THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU LAND ON YOUR FOOT! YOU GET CUT LIKE THIS!" I in no way felt comfortable with him doing this, as I am a 20 year old woman who doesn't feel comfortable when rude old men touch me in any way. This older man never bothered to ask me if he could do this. So I surf one more time, and I go back in! I take my board with me and stand on the shore with my board, out of everyone's way. This older man is YELLING at me to "STOP STOP WHAT YOU'RE DOING". You guys. I'm doing nothing wrong. I'm just standing there. This older man is yelling at me in front of all these people! Why does this old man think he can do that! How rude can you be! Now people are looking at me, and I am completely embarrassed for doing nothing wrong! I got to the lifeguard and I need stitches, so I go to urgent care. This lesson could have been so great and fun and helpful with just Joel. If this company wants people to enjoy the surf lessons, they should get rid of this rude employee. I don't know his name, but he was an older white man with tattoos on his face and body. I want to emphasize that Joel was a great employee and we all agreed that the surfing lesson would've been so much better with just him. I had a horrible experience here and I will never come back. I advise everyone reading this to never come to this place unless you only have Joel teaching you. I am happy to come in and identify this terrible employee if needed. read more
