Completely horrible experience. Was super stoked to come back to this shop on my trip. Walked over to the shop....'By Appointment only'......was on the door. Odd? Middle of the day on a Thursday. So I called, made an appointment for Saturday afternoon. No dice. I came back on Monday....no answer to the phone. Left message. No call back. Called again Tuesday, "I can't talk now, I'll call you back".....no return call. I tried again Thursday late morning, no answer. Thought I would walk over just for the heck of it, sometimes when you roll the dice you win. I got there and the proprietor was letting in another lady and her daughter into the store. I told them I had tried calling, scheduling, and was having a really hard time getting in to BUY things. She told me I could not come in...."Appointment Only". Are you kidding me? TL:DR - Super rude lady answered the phone, tried to schedule a time to come in and she said "I don't know, call me later" then hung up. Koa Board Sports is a surfboard and sea equipment rental business, but you need to call them to make an appointment before you can go in. I called hoping to rent a Donald Takayama, In the Pink surfboard, to see how it handles before committing to buying one. A lady answered the phone and already seemed agitated. I asked her if I could rent the ITP surfboard, but she kept cutting me off. After she finally stopped trying to get me rent other surfboards, I asked when could I come in to pick it up. She seemed confused by this question, so I told her that their website said to call first before coming in. At this point, she cuts me off again and puts me on hold. She comes back and says "I don't know, call me later" then hung up. This whole interaction left a sour taste in my mouth, so I searched around for other surfboard rentals, and Surf Garage also had an ITP for rent, so I went there. I'll probably try calling again in the future, but for now, I'm going to pass. read more

I have stopped in here over the years, to check in on board rentals for visiting relatives, etc. They have a nice selection of just about everything you need, fins, wax, rash guards, bodyboards and fins, surboards and rentals, etc. With the covid-19 shut downs, it was difficult to find surf shops open, just to buy wax. Things are still shut down, but Koa board Sports will let you do in-store shopping. All you have to do is call the number, and within a few minutes they will open the shop for you. I needed to buy a new fin for my longboard, and they have an excellent assortment of used fins at reasonable prices. Picked up a used 10 inch fin for $40 and it was just what I needed for my 9' 9" longboard! They also have a good selection of newer fins from different manufacturers, but the used fin was exactly what I wanted, so no need buy new. I came by another time and picked up a leash, and another time they opened up so that I could look through their rash guards. So yes, a little humbug to have to call the number and wait a couple of minutes for them to come down and open the shop, but they are still making themselves available to their customers. Parking is easy, just park right in front of the shop. You won't find a better selection in the Waikiki area. read more

maikai loa board rental One block from Waikiki Beach If you are a novice to experienced surfer looking for a single day to mutli day rental then KOA has a board for you. I like that KOA is not crowded and that they take care of their gear, although some of the gear has some repairs and scratches there are no dings in their boards which are all EPS cutout boards like Takayama, G&S, and NSP, which makes them superlight for that one block walk down to the beach. If you plan on driving around that island they have rental car compatible roof racks, since you will want to probably hit diamond head, makaha, or the north shore during your trip. The thing I liked the most is that although they are only open from 10 to 6, if you have a multi day rental they have board lockers so you can access you board 24 hours a day in case your hotel isn't board friendly or you don't want to keep it back in your hotel. In addtion, right next to the board lockers is a place to rinse off and wax your board. The shop is pretty small but it is stocked wall to wall with clothing, Futures fins, Island Fin Design fins and apparel which you can use your rental discount on one item. If you are renting for a week and buy a fin it is like getting a free day. I got a tee and a Island Fin Design second which was 20% off. The staff at KBS will show you a lot of aloha and is very knowledgeable about what they rent since I described what I rode at home and they were able to hook me up with a similar board that was board without too much nose rocker with 50/50 rails and rounded bottom which made it great for the slow mushy waves on the south shore and north shore places like chuns. I am looking forward to renting from them my next trip to Oahu. read more

We've been going to Koa for more than five years and we love their board selection, that it's a ma and pa place, and that they will help and accommodate you in every way. Koa has really struggled since Covid, so their system is currently by appointment only which makes it easy and specialized. You can also select a board on their Instagram page and they have plenty available. You can also easily switch boards and store your board there, which is great for dawn patrol or sunset sessions. Such a nice shop with nice people! I am renting a 9' Takayama to try to get better at nose riding (or just less terrible) and this shop is currently only open by reservation/request (you need to call them) and only for weekly rentals. That suited me really well and I had a great experience where I showed up early and Maki met me outside and let me choose a board and offered tips about fin setup. They even said I could change boards for an additional $20 each time, and I thought that was super cool because they had a great selection of longboards in excellent condition. They also gave me a bunch of wax and told me I could check the board in and out any time 24/7. And offered 10% off in the shop during my rental! If you surf already and are looking to try out boards I think this is a perfect way to do it. read more

Was going to be in Waikiki for a week and needed a longboard to rent. Did a quick yelp search and came across Koa Board Sports. Called and left a VM and got a call back. Was told "don't worry, we will have plenty of boards when you get here" When I arrived, there were "plenty of boards to pick from" They allow you to switch boards daily for a small fee. I ended up switching twice before I found one that clicked with me. They even have board storage for you to keep you boards rather than take it back to your hotel. Simple, easy and affordable. I like this place and this is where i got my first board and usually goes here when i needed something for my board. The Lady is somewhat friendly and I recommended this shop to my friends but EVERYONE from my friends said that the lady is so rude. I told them that's not true she's nice. Until last couple times I've been here. I thought she was just busy but she's straight up rude which is not good for business. I just came here not too long ago and at first she was smiling and after 5 minutes she's very rude. I don't even have time to look at other stuffs cause she's got something to do and not all day. After that I started to believe my friends. I guess if you come here you shouldn't ask a lot of questions and you must know what you're buying and be quick about it. read more

I had a phenomenal experience surfing! This is a total recommend! I am proud to report that after a well taught "land lesson," I was able to stand up on EVERY wave during my surf lesson! Surfing gives you such a high!! Nathan is an amazing surf instructor. If Nate isn't going to be your instructor, at least ask him to be your photographer. Terrible experience. Drove specifically to this store hoping to find either a new board or some parts for a board for my son. Let me set this up: their door was WIDE OPEN; their website mentioned NOTHING ABOUT APPOINTMENTS; there was NOT A SINGLE OBVIOUS SIGN on their door about appointments; there was not A SINGLE CUSTOMER IN THE STORE; and yet, the gentleman at the desk looked right at me, and without a greeting or an ounce of friendliness, immediately barked, "Do you have an appointment?" After I apologized for not knowing about the policy, the gentleman's colleague curtly directed me to find their phone number OUTSIDE. Really?! Need I say more? Go elsewhere. Luckily, I walked right down the street to Quality Surfboards Hawaii and found the friendliest, most helpful team. You don't have to tolerate rude, snobbish, you're-not-good-enough--to-shop-here service - even in Waikiki. Either the management sanctions this attitude or the staff now has a policy that gives them permission to treat customers with zero respect; either way, this business is a total joke. I rented a surfboard around 11am and just returned it, around 4pm. It's $20 for half day here vs. $20 for 1 hour at rental places on the beach. The staff I interacted with were all super kind and super efficient. The first staff member helped me pick out a great longboard for the rolling waves here (9' 8"), and there's a big selection of boards overall. The woman at the counter was friendly and no-nonsense; got me out straightaway. (Credit card, ID, $20, and signature.) When I returned the board, I was greeted by another friendly woman -- seems like they have an endless supply of good people here. Highly recommend. read more

I'm not a surfer, I just play one on TV. No scratch that, I don't even play one on TV. In fact, I'd probably be the least convincing surfer you've ever seen. My physique doesn't scream "guy who spends a lot of time being physically active." That all said, I do like surf gear. At least some brands. And when I'm in actual surf towns, I like to check out what the local shops have on offer. Waikiki is not the place to find cool local stuff, at least for the most part. But Koa Board Sports is an exception to that rule. Situated just a block or two off the main drag, hidden on a side street, this little cubby-hole of a shop is jam packed with everything from boards to gear to accessories to clothing to whatever you could possibly need. They have good stuff at not-exorbitant prices. And unlike the super big-brand-heavy stores on the Waikiki strip, the wares here aren't aimed solely at tourists. I stopped in here in search of a hat, and a hat I did find. A nice Hainano trucker snap-back that fit the bill perfectly. While here, I pawed through the racks just to check out what else they have, and they have a lot. On top of the selection, the staff seems cool and mellow. Yeah, it's a surf shop in Hawaii... what do you expect? Well in this part of town, I expect something a little more fake and high strung. Not here. Don't even bother with the beachfront rental places. They charge at least $20 for an hour; here, you get a whole 24 hours for $25. The shop is only three blocks away from the beach, so warm up your arms by carrying it over. If you do multiple days' rental, they have a free board locker on the side so you don't have to adhere to shop hours. I highly recommend this place to rent a board when you're in Waikiki. The staff is friendly and helpful, when they asked me what I ride at home I told them my every day stick is a 6'0. When it gets big a 7'2. I was directed to a 9'-2 , I wasted no time getting in the 80° water the thing was a beast, it could barely turn but I caught waves nevertheless. I exchanged The Beast for a 9-1 Duane Desoto on the same day,it turned great and had speed, due to the channels down the deck I rode that board for the next five days at Pop's and Queens in waves up to head high. These guys will exchange any board rented by them no questions asked. They even wax your board for you, you can't beat that. Check them out when in town, when I return I definitely will. This is the place. Prices are the best going. About $100 for a week. That's less than what you would pay the airline to ding up your own board. Selection is great, with most of the surftec line available. Not a huge fan of epoxy boards, but you can't argue with the choices. Takayama, Rusty, Channel Island, and many others. All in very good condition. Free bar of wax and you are all set. Hours are a bit limiting, but for what you get, you deal. Super nice, easy going people here. If you have an issue, ask and they will try and fix it. Their retail has improved greatly over the last season. The shop looks very nice and you can pickup nearly all surf related items needed for your trip or quiver. Don't assume they will be open when there's a good swell around town, they are likely in the lineup and will be back later.... read more

I couldn't surf this time around, but my husband expressed an interest in mastering some waves, and like any good Elitist would do, I consulted with you guys. Koa was the first business to pop up, as it was conveniently located just off of the main strip. We walked over there (which is a new location as of a few weeks ago, we were told), and selected a board. I perused the sandal selection (lots of Havayanas, Rainbows, etc) while the hubster paid. We were in and out within ten minutes, making our way to the ever crowded beach. The full day price was $20, much lower than other local rental shops. Absolutely the best lesson, people, and board rental. On day 1 I had forgotten my ID and credit card in my hotel room but for the regular hourly rate they rented me a longboard for the day on A HANDSHAKE!!
