Never go to this place. Moku is terrible!! I had a semi lesson here but really learned nothing. The instructor just went all the way deep into the sea and didn't care that I'm struggling paddling into the sea. The instructor teached me nothing. Instead, he just leave me alone in the water for 1 hour! If you are a beginner and want to have fun experience go surfing, then you won't want to go to book lesson here! read more

The surfing class experience is so far the worst I have had. We booked a 90-min private session with 3 students sharing the same teacher on Groupon. at the beginning everything seem fine: instruction on the shore and then take board to the shore and go in. the teacher went all the way into the sea and two girls in the group were struggling to go further because of the wave. the teacher just waited there on his board, didn't come over to try help or anything. he told the other guy "I am not paid enough to go pull them in along this way" We went in at 3pm and the session should have lasted till 4:30pm but he took us back to the shop at 4pm, finishing 30min earlier. after we got back to the shop and realized he finished the session earlier, we asked for a refund on that 30min but he just said "you didn't have the arm strength to finish the 90min so we are not refunding. plus it is a Groupon so we can't refund" -- We were just shocked coz he didn't ask us if we were too tired that we didn't want to continue anymore when we were asked too come back in and he just called it. We could have practiced more and stayed out there for another 30min and done a couple more runs. The teacher didn't care to share his name and didn't care to ask our names - it felt like he just wanted to get it over with and he didn't care if we are progressing or learning. he pushed the owner to talk to us after we reported the session was called 30min earlier. they gave us some surf board rental vouchers which we are not even sure if we still want to go to their shop and use it because of this terrible experience. The teacher we had was an Asian guy, short and very thin with long dyed blond hair to shoulder. I would not recommend him to anyone. it's not about skillsets. Best place to rent boards right by Waikiki beach! The prices are so great you really can't find anything like it elsewhere within the area. My group and I rented 1 paddle board and 3 surfboards for 2 hours for only $25.... that's practically the price of 1 surfboard for 1 hour elsewhere. The service can be intimidating at first but don't let that stop you from renting here. They are really helpful and try to get you in and out in a timely manner. Really liked this shop and everyone working there, except for this skinny young kid (wearing a *single* hanging cross earring) taking/giving boards. Came here almost every day for a month to get surfboards. Super chaotic during the afternoon and they're often short on boards but still love this place for the price and location. Super convenient to grab a board, leave your stuff with them, and then walk a block to Waikiki. They have a covid deal that's $5/2h which is insane cheap. Boards are pretty nice too - many have a go pro mount and all are hard tops. Even if they don't have boards when you get there the turnover is fast and you'll spot people walking back from their surf session within 5-10 minutes or less! read more

My wife and I got surf lessons, our instructor was Blake. we had tried surfing before (without lessons) and it was a nightmare but we decided to give it another shot and got lessons this time and we are so glad we did! The water was pretty crowded but Blake did a great job of getting us in the best position to avoid others while still catching waves. He was also super informative with his teaching and tips and we (surprisingly) we're actually pretty good. Super fun and highly recommend getting lessons from Moku! Also, everyone in the shop was very nice and helpful. You are able to leave your valuables safely at the shop while you go out to the ocean. read more

A huge shoutout to Brain R, who came in on his day off, his birthday no less, to give a private group lessons for my daughter and four friends. We received almost an hour of on shore instructions (not typical but since they were waiting for boards to be returned, he was able to give longer lessons while entertaining them with stories of his professional surfing career. When they went to the water, they receive a full 90 minutes of surfing and as promised, they were riding the surf within one or two runs. Awesome time and great instructor. My instructor, Paulo, gave me a thorough yet succinct run-down on land before we went into the ocean. I was terrified at first since I'm not a strong swimmer at all, but it was clear that Paulo was an experienced surfer and patient instructor. The rest of the staff were really nice as well. I purchased the 1-hour package, and by the end my arms felt like jello (for reference, I was a bit of a couch potato at the time). KUPANAHA experience brah! I decided to take my second surfing lesson of my life for my birthday again this year. I used Yelp to find this place and it was a hit. Last year I went surfing in Ocean Beach California and the waves were 6 feet high and was really rough and really tough (and cold and sea weedy). Waikiki Beach is a much better place to learn to surf as the waves are usually only around 3 to 4 ft tall, water is only 5ft deep and no wetsuit needed! But most importantly GREG BRADY SURFED HERE!! My instuctor Aaron never heard of him. HA I'm old! If you get lucky you might see a Humahumanukanukaapua'a! (Hawaii's state fish) I took a bunch of underwater pictures of those at a different beach which I'll be posting shortly. After a brief orientation at the shop I was on my way to my surfing lesson. Aaron was fantastic! I spent the last year working out really hard and it paid off! Surfing is extremely tiring so prepare yourself if you'd like to try it! I called the shop the week before to set up a private lesson $80 for an hour. I could feel the aloha spirit on my phone call and I knew these people would be super friendly. Lesson starts in the back of the Shop with a surfboard that's on the floor that has no fin on it. It's there that you learn the proper way to get up onto your knees then onto your feet and which way to lean and which way to look. Although I had one surf lesson before I really didn't know any of these basic things as well as I should have. These people know their stuff and give you great individualized attention! I caught 9 waves that hour! I was so exhausted from paddling that my hands were shaking afterwards. This was much easier than last year before I was in better shape. That day I had to take several 5 minute breaks. I'm finally ready to rent a board on vacations now thanks to Moku! Park at Honolulu Zoo and walk over. Lastly and possibly most important was the go pro camera attached to the board! The instructor pushed record moments before capturing a wave and on the paddle back I talked to the camera. Called it Wilson ;-) anyway, after watching myself I can see the mistakes I was making then ultimately correcting. For extra $35 it's like getting multiple lessons since watching over and over will reinforce what was learned. Definitely buy it and tip your instructor if he/she helped keep you from tipping over! I bought a Groupon for a surf lesson here back in February. I'm not sure what the negative reviews are about. Yes, the vibe was super laidback and busy at the shop (with lots of rentals and lessons happening and people hanging out), but I remember the staff being cool and friendly. No one treated me any differently for using a Groupon. Keep in mind that you're paying some of the lowest prices to rent a board or take a lesson here. My instructor was/is truly a gem. I think his name was Ray (I just remember him being in maybe his 50s or 60s, but in waaay better shape than me). He helped me catch more waves that day than I ever caught on my own. His advice also helped me to pop up more consistently, so he helped improve my surfing as well. At that point in time, it was definitely one of the best mornings of my life and I was/am grateful for the experience. Thank you, Ray! --------- It seems like most people who come to the shop are completely new to surfing and want to give it a try. Here's what you can expect as a newbie-- most surf instructors are going to help build your confidence by giving you a good experience in the ocean (so, helping push you onto white water waves after teaching you ocean safety skills and pop-up/paddle techniques, maybe taking you outside if you're doing really well). You probably won't be paddling for your own wave unless you're doing really well or have some prior experience. It takes time to learn how to surf--you're not going to cover everything in 1- or 2-hours because there's too much to learn and some things are based on experience (like reading incoming sets). **It helps to be a pretty strong swimmer** / to be comfortable in the ocean because waves break far away from the shore in HI (if you're not comfortable swimming in the ocean, what are you doing trying to surf???). It also **helps to have upper body strength** (the ability to do push-ups) so you can pop up on the board. Without those two things, your lesson is going to be frustrating for you (and possibly your instructor) because you're going to struggle with getting up on the board and become too tired to paddle out. It takes time to develop the muscles/strength/endurance needed to surf--I know it's not something most people want to hear. If you go in with realistic expectations, you'll have a great time. Too many people have ridiculous expectations after purchasing a cheap Groupon (as you can see from some reviews) instead of taking the experience for what it is--the opportunity to paddle out with an experienced surfer, catch a few waves in Waikiki and make some nice memories. I rented a longboard from Moku and it was great! All of the staff were super friendly and helpful, and it was extremely easy and convenient to rent a board. They even hold your stuff for you while you paddle out! It was very close (only a short walk) to the beach. The pricing here is difficult to beat, especially because you can rent actual longboards, not just a foamie. I had rented from this place multiple times from 2012-2017 with no issues. I went there two days ago to get a board and the people working were absolutely useless. But they had a board available so I said whatever. Then I signed up online for a multiple day rental and was told my board could be delivered to my hotel. After I paid for the board, I was told the board would be delivered to the shop and I would have to pick it up there. Then I go to pick it up this morning and apparently I paid for someone else's board rental and even tho my card and my name was on the contract, they wouldn't give me the board and told me I couldn't have a board for me until later. Not to mention that he owner Brian kept pointing fingers and blaming Mimi who did the billing and messed it up. As a manager I wouldn't have apologized and then offered at least a comp board until the board came. He texted me after we left and rented somewhere else to apologize but it was too late for that and actions speak far louder than words. Don't waste your time here. We rented from Moniz across the street and got a beautiful board for the day, from a sweet woman and I will be going to them from now on. read more

I see a lot of one star OR five star reviews for this shop but they're not realistic. Because people are either super stoked that someone assisted them surfing and they stood up on a board or they're angry because the shop didn't meet their extremely touristy bullshit expectations. I'll address that at the bottom of my novel. We got a lesson one day, and rented twice after from the shop, mainly because we knew where it was and it was best value as far as we knew. The lesson is basically the instructor showing you quickly how to paddle, turn, stand up, and stop. There is nothing about etiquette, recognizing how to catch a wave or a briefing on what to expect. So I recommend figuring that out beforehand if you're going to go to Moku. Afterwards they walk you (two minutes away) to the beach. You go out by the other lessons and they basically do all of the work for you. They hold your board still, tell you when to paddle and when to stand up and then they assist you with catching a wave (it's so much harder to do alone). The rentals were suuuper cheap after our lesson. I think it was $5/ hour or $25 for the day. (Steal considering everything else leisurely in Waikiki requires your first born as payment). It's pretty easy, you sign a waiver, pay them and they hand you a board. (Recommend going with even numbers of people so you can help each other carry the boards or else you turn into a human kite on a windy day) Cons: -purchased a 2 hour lesson on Groupon for my brother and I and got an hour and a half. We got to the shop at 1 and were back at 2:36 -my 19 year old brother got REALLY excited that he learned how to surf and asked for a "not beginner" board when we went back to rent boards and was mocked by staff (honestly he probably deserved it) (but still, don't be an asshole to people, perhaps be helpful instead) (also I'm pretty sure I ended up with that board because no one explained the difference to us and I had a rough time on it) -being so close to other new people was rough because they didn't even TRY to turn and I got rammed straight into several times despite my best newbie efforts. -general lack of comprehensive information Pros: -our instructor (Zack I think) was a pro surfer and was a nice guy, he didn't talk a ton but I hate small talk, so it worked out. -I felt really accomplished after my lesson because I managed to stand up on the board, ride a wave and successfully stop without much difficulty. -super affordable -close to the beach and under a Mexican restaurant for after surf burritos. Fellow Tourists-- you're coming to someone else's home and expecting everyone to behave like Disney world employees just because you exist. If you want people to sing and dance and take your pictures and general entitled bs with a smile DON'T GO TO THE CHEAPEST SURF SHOP. Go pay for the service you want somewhere else. This is like going to the local taco truck with the bomb $2 al pastor tacos and expecting a sommelier and dedicated table service. Also, the reason people are freaking out at you for letting go of your board and general lack of logic is because you're not observing basic etiquette or being aware of your surroundings, pay more attention. Tired surf shop employees-- we're not all assholes I swear please don't treat us like we are. Instead of losing your minds at us, help us to be better by teaching us how to be as respectful as possible to fellow surfers. read more

Guys, there's a reason why this place offers rentals at cheaper price than those at the beach. look at the picture of the paddle board we got. The board is in a terrible condition and 1/3 of the rubber got torn off. It gets very slippery in the water. The material the board is made of is super heavy and consumed your energy before you launch into the water. The ones offered at the beach at least have a whole piece of rubber on it and it's a newer model. So don't be cheap people if you want to enjoy your time at the beach. Given the good enough reviews, me, my girlfriend, and her 8 and 10 year old daughters came here to rent stand up paddleboards. I have done SUP a few times and felt comfortable, but it was all new to them. We rented two large boards with the intention of us adults gingerly paddling while the kids sat on the board ahead of us. After lugging the boards to the beach and across the hot sand, we realized that the water conditions were not ideal for paddleboarding at all. Waves were high, ranging from 2-3 feet swells right at the shore. It seemed like there was a water competition at the same beach, to give you an idea of how rough the water conditions were. We attempted to go out on the water a few times, but every time was flipped over and tossed back to the shore. After getting tossed a few times, being covered in sand, and having swallowed copious amounts of salt water, the kids were crying in fear, not wanting to go out anymore. The event was a bust and the kids are now deathly afraid of ever trying SUP again. When I asked if the water conditions were okay for taking kids out on the SUP, I was told "yeah, it's great right now". I would have appreciated it if the Moku folks were truthful telling me that the water conditions weren't good or safe to paddleboard (especially with kids) and to come back during a time when the tides were gentler. Renting the two paddleboards for two hours was only $40, but I would have happily paid more and come back another time if things were safer for me and my family. read more

DO NOT GO HERE!!!!!!!!! **WARNING - this is a lengthy review because I want you all to know how terrible this place is!*** Just got back from Hawaii a few days ago, and "surfing" with Moku Hawaii was the WORST PART OF MY ENTIRE TRIP!! I was SOOOOO livid with the entire experience, and still am as I'm typing of this review. Here's exactly what happened: I booked a surfing activity for 2 through Groupon a week prior to my trip. When I called Moku to confirm a date/time, I specifically asked if they TAKE PICTURES. The girl I spoke to said yes, and she advised to take my GO PRO SD card, stating they'd be using their Go Pro instead (just to ensure that we don't lose ours. I THOUGHT "oh how nice"). Anyhow, when it came to the day of the surfing activity... after checking in, they had us sign some safety/liability forms then told us to place our belongings on some shelf that was open to the public. I had my phone with me.... and asked if there was a more secure place to put my phone at least. The girl offered to place it behind their counter. And so I did. The girl/cashier girl then yells out "Hey Patrick! Your 2pm is here." Patrick then calls us over to the back of the store to provide us with our (whack) surfing lessons. [[Keep in mind - I've been to Hawaii mannyyyyy times. The last time was 3 years ago because I've been busy with and just finished medical school. The very last time I was in Hawaii, I came with my ex boyfriend and surfed for the first time with **BIG WAVE DAVES** and had an AMAZINNGGGG experience - see my review for them]] Patrick was soooooooo bad at teaching. The entire lesson seemed so rushed. And he had my current boyfriend (who's never been surfing before) practice ONLY once! After briefly "teaching" us how to surf, he took/rushed us over to Waikiki beach to get our surfing started. Before we took off to the beach, I asked him who'd be taking our pictures since I brought my SD card ( as I was told to by their staff member). He casually says "Oh, i'm not taking pictures. It's not safe to take pictures right now with the current waves." WHAT THE F*%CK? Not safe to take pictures right now with the waves???? How does that make sense?! First off... I specifically asked when I called if they would to take pictures, and they said YES. Their shop itself advertises "GO PRO PICTURES/VIDEOS AVAILABLE HERE!" right outside their door. On top of that....I thought they would have at least one of their OTHER staff members take photos while Patrick was out on the water with us! Cause that's how it's supposed to be!!!! My entire attitude and demeanor towards our instructor completely changed as soon as he told me that. It was my boyfriend's first time surfing and I wanted to capture - what was supposed to be - awesome memories during his first surfing experience, but MOKU completely ruined that for us. Since I know how to swim and have been surfing before (with BIG WAVE DAVES), I told my boyfriend and Patrick to go ahead and get started with the "lessons" so that way I'DDDDDDD be able to capture some photos/videos of my boyfriend with MY damn iPhone . I took a couple videos of them getting into the water.... but once they got further out, it was impossible for me to see them. So i headed back to the shop to put my phone away (it's literally like a block or 2 away) On my way back to the beach, I kept trying to look at the brighter side of things... I thought to myself, "Let's just try and make the most of our surfing time. After all, we are in Hawaii.... and life isn't all about pictures/ and posting on social media. Embrace the moment Kat... embrace the moment..." HAH! It was IMPOSSIBLE to embrace and enjoy the moment...because why? Our surfing instructor LEFT US! You could tell he was just counting down the minutes of our "1 HOUR SURFING LESSON", and that he didn't even want to be there. My poor boyfriend..you can tell he was TRYING and struggling so bad to get up on the board. LOL But had our instructor helped us out...and stuck by him, instead of leaving us....it would've been so much easier and enjoyable for my boyfriend. Honestly, midpoint through the "surfing lessons", I just wanted the entire activity with MOKU/PATRICK to be over with. I was physically and MENTALLY exhausted. My poor boyfriend was PHYSICALLY exhausted. And Patrick was a effing jerk I didn't want to be around anymore. On the way back to the shop, Patrick walked ahead of us...because he knew he WASTED OUR TIME AND MONEY. Not once did he have a conversation with us (didn't bother to ask where we're from, what brought us to hawaii, how we liked the surfing experience). He KNEW he was at fault. And if you're wondering why I didn't just book surfing lessons with Big Wave Dave's to begin with (since I had such an awesome experience with them), I honestly wanted to save some money. From the 4-step standing up process to how to steer while paddling, Derek taught me all the ancient secrets to riding a sweet sweet swell. I know so because I got up ON MY VERY FIRST WAVE!!! That's right, Beatches, this mama surfed! Looking like a huge dork in my b/w striped rash guard from Old Navy, I took to the ocean like the fearless tourist wanderer I am. The surf welcomed me in warm soothing arms and I RODE IT! Ok here are some details. I took a 60-minute private lesson that I purchased on Groupon. I never trust Groupon's reviews so I also looked at Yelp and TripAdvisor. Being un-disappointed by previous reviews, I pulled the trigger and booked it. I got there, hit up the potty, put on my hottie rash guard and Derek showed me the land instructions. Then I put on and off both my slippers and some funny yellow rubber shoes the woman working there suggested before finally deciding to abandon footwear for a barefoot surfing experience. Derek held the front ends of both boards, asked me to grab the backs and we walked over to the beach. He put on a leash which I attached to my foot, mounted the GoPro to the front of the board and we hit the water. After paddling out to the super secret spot with the crush of other first time surfers and their instructors, Derek helped me turn the board, found me a wave, quickly reminded me of the pointers and pushed my board to give me some speed. I got up!! Then I fell off. Repeat that 5-6 more times before I realized I could actually just sit down on the board once the wave slowed down. That's all there is to it. They advertise that they open at 6:00 a.m. We called to confirm and they said yes indeed they open at 6:00 a.m. However when we arrived in the morning at 6:00 a.m. the two staff people that were there said that they were hungover and did not feel like opening until 6:30 a.m. There were other customers there already waiting too! They had already opened the shop and just wanted to line up the boards and basically have a power trip and make everyone wait for 30 minutes. Amazing and inexcusable. They said they were hungover from their friend's party last night and therefore were on Hawaii time and just wanted people to wait until 6:30. Looking forward to a response from the owner who I hope reads these. Unbelievable that employees would do that. There are plenty of other shops to rent from. Updating this review. Brian, the owner sent a nice apology response and explained that he had talked with the two employees. Hopefully this will make it less likely to occur in the future. He also offered to make things right and provided his contact number. Better for it to not have happened but given the circumstances he handled it well. Hopefully his professionalism will rub off on the two employees who at the time were unapologetic. read more
