But I think that might have been different if I'd gone to Grandview Elementary. It's a small urban school. It sits on a bluff in Bellevue overlooking the city and the Cincinnati skyline. Wonderful. But even with the blinds drawn and the view obscured, it'd be a great school. The teachers seem to care. No one gives me the impression of clocking time; of winding down until summer vacation hits or a juicy public employees pension can be tapped. Here's what sold me on the school: My oldest went to kindergarten there. We were unhappy with it. From first grade through fourth, my daughter went to Catholic schools. Because of several problems there, we decided it was time to move on. I called several schools and on a lark called Grandview. The principal that was just starting her first year when my daughter was in kindergarten now had several years to reshape the school. What caught my attention though was she still remember my daughter, her interests, and her hobbies...and my too-young-for-school daughter's name. And me and my wife. That's a level of attention paid that we still find permeating the school. This is an urban school with too much poverty and young, broken families, but the school offers those kids and all kids a chance. It's one I wish I had had a chance to go to.

The thing to keep in mind with Grandview is that you aren't just getting a great school--you are getting a great community and a true neighborhood school. We are able to walk to any number of our friends and neighbors homes for gatherings, and it's a regular occurrence for us to be walking down the street and my son to see his classmates (and even teachers and staff). Bellevue's walkability, community garden, community potlucks, and a closeness we had formed with some residents and young families here, are literally the reasons why we were strongly considering moving from Fort Thomas to Bellevue. Then, when we met members of the Board of Education and Robb Smith, the superintendent, we were sold. Grandview's staff has been nothing but supportive of the kids I've seen coming and going, from Daphne (the crossing guard) knowing each kid by name, to Mrs. Young and Mr. Fuller high fiving and greeting each kid coming in with a smile and/or high five. They told me I could save them and use them when they went back to the regular lesson in the fall. I was just told my remaining lessons will not be honored unless I pay for at least 4 additional lessons or pay for their clinic. They told me it's not their fault, it is corporates change and they won't honor my lessons I paid for. They also refused to give me a phone number to this corporate office they are blaming. Don't lose your money going to Bear Paddle. That is not the way to run a business by stealing from your clients.

Crystal Clear has come to the elementary school that I work at for the last several years. We bring…read moreCrystal Clear in to run a science festival for about 550 students. As the teacher who runs the science festival, I work first hand with Crystal Clear. Michelle, the owner and the one who runs the program at the school, is the best! All I had to do was contact Michelle and she took care of everything! She gave me explicit directions on the set up that I needed for the big day and how many volunteers that I needed. Michelle came to the school the afternoon before and set everything up. The day of the science festival she gathers the entire school in one location and gets the kids pumped up with science terminology, experiments, and great rapport! She really gets the kids excited about science and the day they are about to have. She calls kids to the front and gets them involved in the learning. Then each grade comes back for 30-40 minutes to complete science rotations. Each rotation allows the kiddos to get hands on and explore science in a fun way. She keeps things organized by playing a chime to indicate that students need to rotate to the next rotation. At the end of the day, Michelle cleans up her stations. I would recommend this outreach to all as the kiddos not only learned but had a blast!
