Great place for 'fast food" Japanese food. We have been hitting this place ever since they opened... now I guess the secret it out. It stays busy. The food is always hot good and quick. The place is clean and managed very well. The sauces are the bomb. I love the fact that they are in a serve your self pump. Our kids like watching them cook the food through the glass that they have set up near the counter. Every time we go there I have to hold them up so that they can watch them cooking a huge pile of rice or some other food. The cooks have these water bottles that they use to squirt water on the cooking tables and every time our kids are watching them the cooks smile and squirt water at the glass causing the kids to jump back and laugh. I was very unsatisfied with the food and restaurant. The food was over cooked and dry. But worst of all I had small bugs crawling from the window into my food and onto my child's arm. I went to speak to the manager who gave me my money back but acted as if it was no big deal. I took pictures of the bugs all over the windows and my child's arm. Nice! Clean joint, good food. The only complaint is if you roll in there about an hour before closing, be prepared to be treated like you are an a-hole. The employees really start closing this joint down too early, all the sauces are gone, all the items from the tables removed. Then you have to ask for them, then you get treated like the a-hole. Definitely not above a one star! Their fried rice is exactly that fried, greasy and oily. Nothing added like eggs, scallions or peas like normal. I am honestly surprised to see so many negative reviews on this restaurant, but noticed many are several years old. I know good Japanese food being Japanese mixed and growing up with the real deal. I can be hard to impress for that reason when it comes to Japanese food. I am also originally from Charlotte where there is a much larger variety of options when it comes to restaurants. With that said, Mon Cafe easily has the best Japanese food in Sumter and surrounding areas. The sushi is absolutely the most fresh and flavorful. Honestly, it has ruined my views on sushi from other local restaurants. No other sushi taste good in comparison - yes it is that good. I asked the manager and she said the owner orders authentic ingredients from Japan. Quality is important to him! The other food is great too. We like getting teriyaki steak, veggies, fried rice, and sushi as a combo. The manager always remembers our usual and makes sure our order is correct. The rice is always sticky and moist (as it should be) with good flavor. The steak is cooked well and tender, never tough or dry. The veggies taste fresh. I have also tried the chicken teriyaki which was also perfectly cooked and tasty. I see a complaint about the children's meal. I ordered my daughter the child's chicken teriyaki as a dine in. They brought a bowl packed with fried rice and what looked like a small portion of chicken teriyaki. I was not impressed on the first sight of it. However, after dumping it onto a plate, it was actually a very good sized portion. It was more than my 7 year old could eat in one sitting. It just appeared small. It came with a drink and a pack of cute Japanese cookies shaped like koala bears which was a nice surprise. I told my fiance that I could see us ordering it ourselves as a meal and having enough to eat easily. For a nice healthy meal it is about the same price as a happy meal. Hard to beat for fresh cooked Japanese food! The staff is friendly and fast. The manager keeps everyone on their toes and she is always there. Like I already mentioned she knows our special order, always makes sure we are charged correctly, and that it is made correctly. You are greeted as you walk in the door and the manager really takes time to make sure to speak to each table to ensure they are enjoying their experience. If you need anything she will get it immediately. You are welcome to drink refills, as much teriyaki and shrimp sauce as you'd like, etc. The resturant is always clean. On last visit rice was stale, chicken tasted "strange" enough that I was afraid to eat it. Won't go back. Have been here total of three times, rice always tastes stale. Food is not prepared fresh; it's precooked and served from a hot tray behind the serving counter. It's set up like a shop in a mall food court. That would be OK if the taste came up to the level of a mall food court, but it doesn't. My wife said the beef was OK, but agreed the rice was stale. read more

The restaurant is good, but doesn't reach it's full potential. We tried the Mon Chicken and the Teriyaki Chicken bowls. Trying to eat gluten free, we had no rice, but only vegetables. The meat options were tasty and well cooked. Be forewarned that the only vegetables they seem to have here are onions and zucchini. You can get them steamed or fried. The spring rolls were an adequate appetizer, served piping hot. They didn't have much in them, meat wise. We will probably eat here again, but it won't be an all the time place. read more

Great food. Horrible service. I called in an order and as I always do I asked the lady answering the phone how she was and she said "Yeah yeah yeah, will this be one order or two.". I was of course very offended but continued my order being as polite as I could. I ordered teriyaki chicken and scallops and she kept interrupting saying she didn't know what that was. Mon Cafe is our favorite- primarily because it's the cleanest Asian restaurant in the area. It's not sketchy dirty at all. The price is higher but ask about their rewards cards- for every $100 you spend, you get $10 off your next meal! Also, the food won't come with vegetables unless you ask for it- I think it's like the plate?
