The word on the street was that Karen Golden was the person you went to if you were coming into this from a place of trauma and the street wasn't kidding. If you're kind of a hot mess, you won't find a more compassionate person. She's not judgy, she's not unkind, and she makes the process of ripping your pubic hair out of your body as not-awful as it possibly could be. The room is clean and smells nice. Her assistant Lara is also as kind as can be. She takes cash or checks and everyone is understanding if you don't come by on the regular or have to cancel at the last minute (I disappear for months at a time: my income ain't what it used to be) but if you can only go to one place for the rest of your life for waxing, this is where you should go. She's the best.

I emailed the spa over a month ago to book the appointment and specifically asked whether they had couples rooms where we could receive the service together. They confirmed that they did and asked what day and time we wanted to come in. I provided a date and preferred time, and they confirmed the appointment. When we arrived today, we were brought into the spa's half-finished basement, where a woman immediately directed my boyfriend into a room with only one bed. I stopped her and explained that we had booked a couples appointment. She told me that another couple had arrived earlier and taken the couples room, and that they only had one couples room available. I explained that our email correspondence clearly showed that we had reserved the couples room over a month ago, so it was unacceptable that they had scheduled another appointment in that room during our reserved time. After going back and forth with her, I eventually gave up because there was nothing else that could be done. We were placed in separate rooms. Throughout the entire interaction, she was rude, dismissive, and offered no apology. The head spa service itself was just as disappointing. The woman who performed my treatment was extremely aggressive, and the experience was not relaxing at all. The entire setup felt cheap and unsanitary. I genuinely did not enjoy any part of the service. At the end of the treatment, I was brought into the hallway for a blow-dry. While my hair was being dried, the same woman who had originally brought us downstairs approached me and told me that next time I needed to make sure I requested the couples room when making my reservation. I told her that I had done exactly that and that our entire email conversation was centered around booking the couples room. I explained that it was not my fault that they chose to schedule someone else in that room despite having already confirmed our reservation. At that point, she became extremely rude and essentially blamed the entire situation on me. After my partially completed blow-dry, we went to pay. While explaining the total cost, the employee repeatedly asked how much I wanted to leave as a tip once I mentioned I was paying by card. First of all, it is highly inappropriate to ask a customer for a tip, and secondly, I had actually planned to tip in cash. I seriously considered leaving no tip at all, but I still ended up tipping $10 to each woman. At no point did anyone attempt to resolve the situation, take responsibility, or offer any form of apology or accommodation. Instead, they made the experience even worse through their rude behavior and by repeatedly blaming me for their mistake. I will never return and would not recommend this spa to anyone.

It gets easily crowded in the shop so be prepared to dodge other customers eyeing the makeup section. The unfortunate thing about this store is that some of the price labels are not placed properly or placed at all-- it kept me guessing at what the prices of some of the products were. I could've asked the employees, but who wants to ask the staff every time they want to know how much a product costs? Just a fair warning that you really SHOULD however get the proper pricing of these products prior to purchasing because some of these makeup/beauty products must be imported and therefore MUCH more expensive than if you would purchase them from an online supplier. My total came out to nearly $50 (yes, you read that right. 50 bucks) and all I bought were 4 products: an eyeliner, hand sanitizer, hand cream and dispoable razors. You can't even return these products because RETURNS ARE NOT ALLOWED. I'm sad I even joined the rewards program because I was charged 5 bucks for the keychain tag thing they give rewards members. The employee DID tell me this prior to me joining, but I didn't hear her properly because I was shocked at the additional charge when I did receive my receipt. I even saw that they were selling a limited edition Asian Starbucks tumbler for a whopping $64. I'm giving 2 stars for the fact that there are some great variety of Asian beauty supplies (some reasonably priced, others not so much) offered at Tao's as well as for the very friendly employees who came by to ask if I needed anything several times.

Monica is the BEST! Both as a stylist and a person, in general. I saw a woman in a parking lot who had FABULOUS highlights. When I stopped to compliment her, she told me about Monica's Salon. What a find! She has always given me such great highlights and she's very reasonably priced. The salon is nothing fancy, but it's clean & homey with happy customers/friends/visitors always around. I love this place. I just moved to Chicago and I am still trying to find someone who is as diligent about my eyebrows as the ladies here are. They do a fantastic job and it's always really quick. I've had brazilian done a few places in several cities and nothing compares! Brazilian is never painLESS but this was close! monica did an amazing job and it was done so fast - was in an out in no time and in no pain/sensitivity afterward. I've been to this salon for Brazilian wax about four times with monica. The best thing about having her do this is that she is a true "professional". She brings respect, and a strong work ethic to this most "uncomfortable" situation (girls, you know what I mean). She is very attentive to detail and very quick.
