As others have noted, this is a fast, cheap wax. It ain't glamorous, but it gets the job done. The waxing job is thorough and long-lasting. Yeah, it hurts, but she's so quick that it doesn't hurt for long. I also appreciate the all-business attitude that helps keep my mind off what is really a bizarre situation. Because there appears to be only the one lady who works here, you won't always get an answer to your phone call. I just got a wax done with Isabelle - Isabelle is amazing. She uses beeswax which means she pulls it off with her hand not strips. I've had many different waxers give me Brazilians and at some point there is always extreme pain. I had NONE with Isabella... nothing was more painful or uncomfortable than an eyebrow wax. She also checked in with me throughout to see if I wanted more hair off, how I thought things were looking etc. It's an interactive process - expect to stick your foot on the wall and hold your butt open. Yes... she'll do your butt too, it's not a Brazilian without it! She offered me paper panties but those things are stupid, just strip down, she doesn't care! She is also very excited about the hair that comes off.. thought that was cute. I'll update this in 2 weeks or so --- the wax itself is one thing, how long it lasts for is another! $28 is a STEAL for this. This is the best place to get a wax, ever. I have been to several places to get Brazilian waxes and it would hurt SO much. I would read reviews saying "oh this place doesn't hurt blah" but it always would be so painful. But with Isabelle, she uses beeswax/hardware. I never used it before and I was a little nervous because she was slathering huge chunks and I thought oh gosh this is going to be awful. But it was not bad at all. All it did is make the process faster and less painful. Isabelle also explains what she's doing and why she's doing it. She's so sweet and funny which makes the process much more enjoyable. She also did a thorough job because there's nothing that's more annoying than having little hairs left behind. I normally only get waxed a couple times a year in the summer because it hurts so much, but now I can see myself coming consistently for the rest of the year. I cannot speak to the haircuts at April's because I have never had one, but I am a regular client here for waxes. Isabella uses beeswax and has been certified in two different methods of waxing. She is a great conversationalist and damn is she good at her job. She offers swift and painless hair removal, all with a smile! Besides being friendly and efficient, this is also the most affordable wax I've been able to find in the area. A Brazilian is only $28! However, if you're looking for a "salon experience" I would suggest you look elsewhere. The wax room is pretty tiny and is definitely not fancy. This isn't a place I go to hang out and lounge. The whole process only takes about four and a half minutes. The room serves it's purpose and I find myself back every 2-3 weeks. You can do walk-ins but she is also pretty busy so I always call in advance. If it is your first time getting a wax: This is a GREAT place to go. Just make sure you tell her! She walks you through the whole process and is super comforting. Plus the beeswax is significantly less painful than other waxes I've had. read more

I found this place because of Yelp, otherwise I would have never known it was there! I've been getting bikini waxes from another salon in Davis Square for a few months, and was never totally happy with it (not thorough, ingrown hairs) but figured it was all I could get for $30. WELL Isabelle gives an incredible wax for $28. Despite it being cheaper, faster, and less painful than other waxes I've had, this has been the highest quality wax I've had in a while. Isabelle talks through the whole thing and she's hilarious. I asked for a landing strip and she said "you want a plane landing? Okay." She uses beeswax, so no cloth strips. The wax is hot, but not too hot. She goes over her work with tweezers after. The waxing is done in a sectioned-off part of her salon. The whole salon can hear what's going on, so if you're looking for a more private wax, with candles and meditation music playing...Isabelle doesn't have time for that crap! She's busy telling you about how her retired husband is coaching soccer now. Oh yeah, and when you're paying, she winks at you and says "enjoy your wax!" I'm going back there for sure. read more

April is THE person. I don't even live in Somerville any more but I keep coming back to her for the skillfulness and super nice experiences. She knows me by now and always makes sure that I feel comfortable while we are in, chats me up, offers life advice and is in general hilarious. As far as the wax itself goes, she is precise and super detailed, VERY fast and in general amongst the most painless I've been too. I haven't seen anyone else in years now, and hope never to move too far away from April - I really feel comfortable around her and her adorable husband helper, and the price is super reasonable - even after an extra tip for niceness. Never had any kind of wax before because I couldn't justify spending so much money on something so painful. But I decided to finally get a brazillian because the razor burn and stubble was becoming just as painful. I was about to call to make an appointment somewhere only 15min from where I live and pay $50 for it until I decided to broaden my search to the city since I'll be in the Boston for the next week. & I'm so glad I did! I didn't have very high expections when I came on here to browse the salons so I was shocked to see a place that offered a brazillian for only $28 AND had mostly good reviews. All of these reviews are pretty spot on. Isabelle was fantastic, she made me feel so comfortable and talked me through everything. It was super quick ( aprox. 20 minutes). & It didn't hurt as bad as I thought it would (for which she credited the bee wax). However, as previously stated by the others, the environment was slightly shabby looking (but didn't look unclean either, which is what matters to me). & She had to help a customer out front half way through my wax, and told me not to move and hold my position exactly the way it was. Which I did. For atleast a good three minutes lol. Although at the time I was a little annoyed, I can understand that she was very busy at the time. Also, there was a good amount of wax I found later towards the back that she must not have noticed. Even with those very minor negatives, I still gave a 25% tip because the price was unbeatable and she really made my first waxing experience a piece of cake! Isabelle is my new favorite person in Davis Square. This was my first time getting a Brazilian. Based on Yelp reviews I was initially inclined to check at Karen Gold's, and may still make it there at some point or another. However, she's booked until November 9, 2011. Womp womp. Last night I was in the mood for some immediate gratification (masochism?) and decided to check if Isabelle had any openings. And she did. First off, price: $28 - fairly certain that's the cheapest around these parts (I've looked at other places' websites and the going rate seems to be $45-65). Also, CASH ONLY. Secondly, ambiance - meh, she works on you in the back of her hair cutting salon in a dingy little room. I mean technically, it's got everything you need for the process: a bed with a fresh roll of wax paper (like at the doctor's), the wax which is beeswax and not strips, some circa 1983 posters of people cheesing hard, AND a little footrest for when you bare yourself to this sweet old lady. If you're willing to pay the higher price, I'm sure some of the other waxing locales may offer a swankier experience. Thirdly, pain level - I was literally sweating bullets once the panties were off and the wax was on. In my mind I kept thinking, "what the fuck is wrong with me? Maybe i should make a run for it!" It must have been the beeswax. I know it's not my tolerance. Of course it hurt, there was hair being RIPPED off my body - but it honestly was not excruciating in the least bit. And the whole thing only took 15 minutes! Also, she's super duper meticulous and does not leave any stragglers behind. I finally found a place to get my Brazilians from now on!!! (And there was much rejoicing.) I was so sad when my waxer left Elizabeth Grady on Newbury. I had been seeing her for 3+ years so I was hesitant to go to someone new. I tried 2 other girls and didn't like them so I decided to leave. I'm not paying $80+ for a wax I'm not thrilled with. But everything else around my is just as expensive, so when I heard about April Hair Cutting from a friend I decided to try it out. Location: it's in Davis Square right off the red line so it's convenient. It took me about an hour to get from the Longwood medical area. And yes it's quite a hike but I will return. I'm that pleased with this place. She's open pretty late and will even stay extra if you really need to come in. The wax: I was so happy that Isabelle uses hard wax. It really does hurt less. That's what they used at EG so I didn't want to try out the soft wax. We talked the whole time and I was done in 10 minutes. 10 MINUTES! And best part not only was it the quickest wax I've had, but also the least painful. And I've had probably a few dozen Brazilians in my life. She used a new pot of wax so I wasn't worried about it not being hygienic. The price can't be beat. $28! This is cash only, so if you're like me and only use your card, make sure you plan ahead. Is this a spa like atmosphere? There's no music, dimly lit lights or candles. She is straight forward, quick and makes you laugh. As Isabelle says when you're leaving: enjoy your wax ;) read more

Thank you, Yelpers, for leading me to April's for my Brazilians! I've been going there for almost a year and have never had a bad experience. Isabella loves what she does, and she's great at it. She makes hilarious comments and tells entertaining stories, which helps make the process go by even faster. Plus, she uses Beeswax, which hardens enough to peel off... not exactly pain-free, but SO much more tolerable than wax strips. If you're looking for dim lights,soft music, and relaxing incense burning, you're barking up the wrong tree. But if you're looking for a quick (15 mins), reliable, less-painful, and CHEAP wax ($20 for bikini, $28 for Brazilian), I highly recommend calling April's. I got my first Brazilian wax here 2 weeks ago, and will definitely be returning. She made me feel very comfortable, and explained the whole process as she went. It was also very fast, I was in and out in only 15 minutes! I almost didn't believe all the Yelp reviews that said it was only $28, but it's true! If you're looking for a spa experience go to Bliss. But if you don't mind a back room (with a curtain instead of a door) at a beauty shop that hasn't been updated or renovated since 1971 then this is the place for you! April (At least...I assume she's April...) is hilarious. She's like an adorable grandmother who gives you sex advice. Some people might find this awkward but a full brazilian is $27. The place is luxury-free (and expect to find yourself in a few awkward positions during your appointment...) but super clean. She uses hard wax which hurts slightly less than the traditional. April is the only person who works here (well, her adorable elderly husband is sometimes up front listening to the radio) so call first for an appointment as she books up. She tries really hard to fit girls in but seriously every time I've gone there have been a gaggle of 20-something girls sitting and waiting their turn. She works fast so even with this line if you have an appointment April is always on time. It's kind of incredible. I have also never witnessed anyone getting their hair done here- just bikini waxes. Unbelievable Brazilian. The lady that does this uses beeswax, which essentially none of the newer salon use because they damage the waxist's manicure as there is no paper you use to put on the wax itself. Basically, the wax goes on the skin, dries a bit, and gets pulled off. It does not hurt at all - just as much as an eyebrow wax. I was done in 15 minutes and was having a conversation with the waxist the whole time - how many of you can say you could do that while receiving a Brazilian? For $28, this place is a steal. Not to be completely redundant but this was fantastic. She like my other waxer in Boston uses the hard wax. She says that it gets the hair better and that it doesn't hurt as much, it doesn't hurt as much. She'll tell you to pull the skin around the wax because you'll get more hair with the wax and it'll hurt less. There's also this weird foot brace on the wall that you put your foot and I'm partially thinking that it's there so you have something to press down on instead of accidentally kicking her in the face when she's waxing you. She was very chatty but that's usually good since, let's be real here, it's an awkward process. When I finished with my wax and her next appointment wasn't there so I asked if she could also touch up my eyebrows. I'm very particular about my eyebrows because a lot of people tend to go thinner than I'd like. But it was a good fast clean up and seriously 10$, she really did squeeze me into her schedule that was nice. I was So $38 for everything, and whatever I pulled out of my wallet to leave for tip. Which was probably about 12? Either way, cheaper than my other waxer which 60 just for the wax, not including tip. Three tips, make an appointment. Come early to your appointment, just like 10 minutes or so. And cash only. read more

Isabelle is amazing, this is the best waxing place I have ever been to for so cheap! a Bikini is 20$ (and its more thorough than a regular 'bikini'), and a Brazilian is 25$. Amazing. I always get the regular bikini and give her a good tip because its so cheap and she makes you feel really comfortable. I cant say it doesn't hurt. but then that would be some kind of miracle. This is one of the best things about living in Boston. Holy Grail level of awesomeness. I first came here maybe nine months ago and have been a regular since (even though I live on the other side of town; 45 minutes on the T). My first appointment was late in the evening (she schedules based on demand, so I usually ask her what the latest she has right now is. Sometimes it's 5, sometimes 6, rarely 7pm), and I was running late, so I called when I was 1 mile away and 5 minutes before show time. I had just moved to the area and thought 1 mile in 5 minutes was reasonable. Nope. I showed up about 15 minutes after the scheduled time and she still saw me! As she positioned me, I prepared myself for pain (especially because of how late I was), but she talked the whole time and explained what she was doing and what wax she used. This was my first time having beeswax, and afterwards, I had some of the worst bumps and ingrown hairs of my life. But I had so few hairs left, the wax lasted forever, and I couldn't argue with the price. The next time I came back was much better with very few bumps. Reasons for four stars instead of five: CASH ONLY, little privacy and she's been leaving me with quite a bit left over wax on my body (I've started bringing my own wax remover). read more

Isabel walks on water as far as I'm concerned! I just returned from my second visit with her, and it was as great as the first. She is FAST, and PAINLESS. I've been to other places where I've needed Motrin and counseling after a Brazilian. I'm kicking myself for not going to her sooner, but I put it off, assuming I'd never get an appointment. However, Isabel is very good about fitting you in if she can: I booked my first wax only a couple of days ahead of time. Yes, the place is no frills, but who cares? It's a neighborhood type of shop, it's been there forever, and Isabel and her husband are really, really, nice people. It's clean, and there's plenty of privacy-the waxing area is in the back, behind a curtain. I couldn't care less about a spa experience; I want it done right, with minimal pain, and reasonable cost. Mostly I want it done right. I'd pay any price she asked. The waxing is cheap-but priceless. It cost me only 78 bucks (before tip) for a full Brazilian, upper leg, underarms, and chin. I don't think anyone can beat her prices, especially for the amazing job she does. No embarrassment, super-quick and super-thorough. The lady is a consummate professional. Oh, and that hard wax is a revelation-it gets every last hair, and really, no pain. And no ingrowns, either. Cash only, btw. read more

I went in for a last minute Brazilian this evening after searching through Yelp and not finding any of my normal places had an opening. Pros: - Really quick (15 mins) - Very friendly/talkative (read: distracting) - Right in Davis Sq, perfect location - Hard wax - so much less painful - She did a really good job, thorough - CHEAP! I typically pay $60+ for hard wax at Sasha or Pyara in Harvard Square, but this is much more affordable at $28. Sasha Salon and Pyara are both great, especially Sasha, but I can't justify the enormous cost anymore. Cons: - This is not really a Con at all because this contributes to the awesome price, but I would say that if it is your first wax in the downstairs area that you should educate yourself beforehand on what to expect - this is only because she is pretty straightforward, no frills/music/fancy spa setting. So for my first one, this place might have made me very very nervous. But either way, in 10 minutes you're practically done. - CASH ONLY - and again, this is not even a Con because having $28 + tip is not a lot to ask This place is a really great local find - Isabelle (?) said she doesn't even have a computer so some of her clients posted it up for her on Yelp! Isabelle is a hilarious south American grandma. She works to put you at ease and make you loosen up. I almost rolled off the table she had me laughing. Her hard bees wax is great and the pain was on the low side for this service. She works quickly. One warning: this is in a weird make shift room in the back of this ugly old 80s salon. Not DIRTY, but ugly and small and weird. She walks in and out of the room to get fresh wax. The door is faced so no one would see you, but when you're laying there with no panties it can be a shock. This is no spa!!! But the quality of the wax used, the skill of the waxer, and the end result beats out many spa waxes I've had. Price is 28$. It's insane. read more

So what everyone else is saying is all true. This was my third brazilian ever. After my last one I wasn't sure I wanted to do it again due to the pain and $$$ but after going here I know I can get through it from now on. I did take advil before so not sure if that helped or not. Not sure who my lady was but she is very matter of fact, no judgment, and gives great direction of what you need to do such as your hand placements which can be a little awkward. I knock down a star just because of the environment. I was relying on all of these good yelp reviews to get me past the lack of decor in this place but you are literally in and out in 15 min or so and not spending a lot of money so its worth it. I also had little pieces of wax on me so had to do a little review in the shower to make sure it was all off. Isabelle was a lovely woman and great at waxing! She is so straight to the point. 2 seconds from entering the building, she sent me to the waxing area (a small table behind a curtain). We got right to it! But she walked me through every step, why she uses the beeswax she uses, and didn't miss a hair. Interestingly enough, the only painful part was the extreme heat of the wax. But you know what they say, if you can't handle the heat... Anyway. The actual process of pulling up the hair was quick (about 15 minutes for the whole thing) and she's glad to show you the roots of the follicles she's pulling. Plus! It's a great price! $35 plus tip. Best Brazilian ever! I previously went to Fashion Way in Union Square, but since Andrea left, was never happy with the waxes I was getting. After reading the other reviews, I had to try April's for myself! She is AMAZING. First off, the reviews are true, the beeswax hurts SUBSTANTIALLY less!! Second, she is super fast, and even walks you through it "the hair from here, here, and here, is gone...we only have this area left." And finally, super cheap, $28 (cash only), no one can beat that!! April (also goes by Isabelle) is very sweet and charming, which is great since, as you can imagine, a Brazilian puts you up close and personal with an otherwise complete stranger! I went here for my first Brazlian wax based on yelp reviews. I agree that the wax was cheap, quick, and relatively painless. The major problem I had was that the place and servicer were both unhygienic. She didn't wear gloves, nor did she wash her hands first; and her hands were filthy. The tweezers and comb she used were just sitting on the counter, not in any kind of germ killing solution. In addition, she didn't clean the skin at all before waxing. What concerned me most, was that 5 or 6 times during the wax she made a big show of rolling the wax in a ball and throwing it out, telling me she didn't reuse it. (I never would have even thought of anyone reusing wax, except she kept mentioning it.) Within a week of getting the wax, I had a painful swollen gland in the crease of my leg. My doctor told me it was due to 2 infected hair follicles in the area. If this place was clean, I'd return in a second. But I'd rather pay more to get waxed at a place with better hygiene. read more

I've been coming here every month since I found April's on Yelp earlier this year. Same great results like I mentioned in my earlier review. Isabelle is still the best waxer (and cheapest) there is, even though she works in a less than luxurious environment. My caveat would be not to make appointments Saturday mornings. Isabelle keeps her Saturday mornings open for hair appointments and another waxer takes her place (don't remember her name). I felt like I had more ingrown hairs after an appointment with her, whereas, with Isabelle, I'm always feeling 100% amazing. Go for Isabelle. Still highly recommended. read more
