Extremely knowledgeable and helpful bike shop. I surprised my husband (who was skeptical about why a Townie bike is worth the investment) with a Townie for Father's Day. He took one spin around the parking lot and said, "Sold!!" He insisted that I needed to get one too...so he surprised me with my new beauty. Such a huge difference. So we rented bikes from Sea Island and we're cruising down to the Village at Saint Simons & our tires were flat we saw a monkey wrench bicycle rentals and we stopped by. David is awesome. I walked in to this store knowing nothing about beach cruisers or island bikes in general. He was generous with his time and showed me the full range of bikes they offered. After a lot of deliberation and bike testing I wasn't ready to buy quite yet. I thanked David for his time and looked at a few other bike stores on the Island. The customer service at the other bike stores were no where near what I experienced at Monkeywrench. Also, the bikes weren't the same quality. I called David back and bought a bike the moment I walked out of the competitor's store. Another reason I went with Monkeywrench is because of the after sale service they offer. I can bring my bike in every month for a tune up including air pressure check, chain lube, and an overall look at the bike for no charge. Stopped by for a repair only to be told that they do not typically work on bikes that the brakes do not work and of "this quality". I love this bike shop, I wish we had a bike store like this in my permanent residence. We holiday in St. Simon's a few weeks each year, and we always have some bike issues, either with the bikes supplied by the airbnb where we stay, or our own bikes. Regardless, we always get superlative service from the owner, whether it is just pumping our tires up for us, or more significant issues. The owner provided great advice to me about buying a bike seat for my wife on a prior trip, he really knows the nuances that you could not possibly obtain if you were trying to purchase a seat just based on Amazon reviews. Monkeywrench provided the kind of low-key, informative service that this customer and his partner found invaluable. Lindsay led us through the myriad bike options, and we left with the right bikes for our use on St. Simons. You cannot get this helpful assistance at big box stores. Worth every penny. Plus, they will give your bike a monthly free check up! It's one month or so later and, having a seat loose after lending the bike to a friend, I show up for a follow on visit. Seat fixed, tires given more air, brake cable stiffened, and gears oiled. Could not have been more helpful. Their approach to service left me grateful I had bought my bicycle from them! Took my Schwinn Bike for a tune-up...I don't ride much but, the tires were both flat, needed someone to look it over. I keep it inside, it has no rust on it. I was told it would be $150 - $185.......I think I only paid around $125 new. Basically I was told my Bike was a piece of junk. Instead of insulting people about their bikes (maybe they can't afford to spend $400 - $500). Just post a sign or let your customers know you don't work on bikes that were not purchased there....PERIOD. I went to Two Brothers Bike Shop....received a tube for 1 tire, air for the other, oiled my chain, check my brakes and gears, tighted my seat and took it for a quick ride. I was charged $35.....there was another man in the store who was complaining about Monkey Wrench, he was quoted $125......his charge at Two Brothers was $20 read more

We are travelling and spent the day touring St. Simons on our bicycles. We stopped in to try out new seats and received the best customer service possible. Very knowledgeable about all products and even though we were making a small purchase we were treated the same as if we were spending much more. This store is well worth a visit. Our out-of-town professional biking friend, who flies in without his equipment, always visits here to get our bikes tuned up to his expectations so he can ride while in town. For me, bike shops should be a part of the revolution. They should be anti-establishment to the bone, and be all about pedaling yourself around instead of burning fossil fuels. This shop is not one of these. This shop is a snob house, with salesmen who are carefully watched by the boss to only serve those with the deepest pockets. They don't stock any bicycles that are reasonably priced, and you can feel that they very much don't want to be bothered by customers who aren't ready to drop big money on a bike, which isn't me. The energy sucks there. This may be one of the worst businesses that I've come across in a long while. As far as I am concerned, they are the worst bike shop in the country- and that is clearly a reflection of the greedy ownership. Benjy's is your other choice on the island. Benjy's is much more down to earth and friendly. They are much more in the spirit of bicycling. And, their prices are reasonable, they have a wide selection, and they are happy to order you whatever you'd like to buy. Additional information from 1/29/11: I got an angry message from user "Tyler H" who has never rated anything himself, saying: "You should not be posting on yelp since you are giving bad advice. Monkeywrench is the only shop to go to on the island if you want stuff done right." I don't have experience in getting work done in that shop or in Benjy's or elsewhere, so I can't speak to that point. All I know is that their attitude sucks. And, for that they are lucky I even gave them the 2 stars. read more

I have to say, I was a little skeptical about stopping here after reading reviews, but it was very close to my hotel and decided to give them a try. They were great! Their rates were very competitive and the people could not have been nicer. After the ride, we took back our bikes and asked lots of questions about the bikes themselves because they rode great! Monkeywrench gets customer service. I bought a bike by phone as a Christmas present before coming down to the area for the winter. When i came to pick it up, it just wasnt a good fit, literally. The bike i ultimately chose was a little cheaper. After spending at least an hour with me, when i did finally make my final pick, the owner cheerfully refunded the difference, made adjustments etc. After taking it home, i decided i needed a couple more adjustments and brought it back a week later. These adjustments were also made gratis as part of the full service. Sometimes you have to wait a little because they are busy, but never unessarily so. I recommend Monkey wrench to anyone looking for a shop with product knowledge and service. read more

Probably the worst experience of any business that I have ever been to. The owner is a total asshole. I contacted the shop and asked for a quote to have gears adjusted on two kids bikes. The employee said $20 per bike. I brought the bikes to the shop and the employee started to adjust the gears, then the owner came out and asked the employee what they were doing. The owner looked at the bikes and said oh no, its $20 dollars for the front gears and $20 dollars for the rear gears and the bikes brakes weren't adjusted properly and it would be 20 dollars for the front brakes and $20 dollars for the rear brakes. I said I would adjust the brakes myself and the owner said he wouldn't adjust anything on the bike unless everything was adjusted by them. He then offered me the total lifetime adjustment package of $110 dollars for each bike. I told the owner that the bikes only cost $100 dollars and he wanted me to spend $110 dollars to adjust each bike. I told the owner that he was crazy. I took the bikes and left. The absolute worst customer service of any business that I have ever been to. As a side note, I took the bikes to Griffins bike shop in Brunswick and he adjusted the gears and brakes on both bikes in 10 minutes for free. I now take all my business to Griffins Bike Shop. read more

There is a reason Chris is in the "fun business". My family and I went in to just look around as all but me are avid cyclists. Before I knew what had happened, Chris had me riding around on a bike in his parking lot having the time of my life! I had forgotten how fun it could be to ride, when you have the right bike! Chris and his staff were all very courteous, helpful and knowledgable. Their store was neat, well organized and easy to navigate. Bad experience here in 2014. They put the wrong combo on the bike lock. (They set the combo for you at the beginning of the rental period). I didn't test it at the store. I never used the lock all week. On turn in, the lock would not open (since they programmed it wrong - ie I said 1234 and they put 1235). We tried and tried to guess the combo but it would not open. Rather than do the right thing, they charged my credit card for the lock (I think it was $25-35 or so). No amount of reasoning was helpful. Fell on deaf ears. I was quite upset. Later back home, with my new lock, I finally guessed the code and they had reversed two of the numbers I had specified. This was terrible terrible customer service. I'm posting this several years late as I was reminded of this bad experience when my family arrived once again at Sea Island (July 2018) and I set out to rent 4 bikes for the week. I saw the business on the web and knew which business I would NOT be renting bikes from. read more

I decided to rent bicycles from Monkeywrench while vacationing nearby during the week after Christmas. I was kept waiting at the shop for a while, but eventually was told that could indeed reserve the bicycles for the week. I had filled out the paper work, arranged the drop-off/pick-up, and given them my credit card information when the owner (not the person assisting me) barked at me from across the shop that I couldn't rent the bicycles. He was going on vacation for two weeks (shutting down the store) before my rental was up, so no one would be there to receive the return. Apparently the staff member assisting me had no clue, which may be why this owner can't trust anyone to run his store or merely pick up a bicycle while he's away. When I expressed dismay to the owner, he responded tersely, "well it's better you know now then later." Really? It actually would have been better if someone had told me 30 minutes ago, before I went through the hassle. He had no further response other than a blank stare. Maybe after he loses my and others' business he will realize that a little "sorry" goes a long way. read more
