I did not choose to come to this restaurant. I am gluten-free and they only have a few options I wasn't really interested in. But the hostess was so nice and welcoming and my waiter was friendly and even the social media person helped me a lot when I was panicking about having to attend an event here. I chose to get the sausage platter because someone else at my table wanted to share it. One sausage was good, one was fine, and one we did not like. I am giving 4 stars because I don't want to bring the star rating down because of all this. They really tried to help me make the best of an awkward situation. Oh and the spiced apple cider was really good.

This brewery near downtown Bend is a great spot to sit down and catch up with friends. They offer indoor as well as outdoor seating with heat lamps that they turn on as it gets cooler out. The menu offers a variety of drinks including a whole list of Belgian based Ales of which I tried a couple which both tasted great, very strong yet smooth flavors. I also tried the poutine which was phenomenal with great flavor and real crisp fries. The server was awesome, he was training another server on the job but still made sure to check in on us frequently enough and was knowledgeable on the menu. Overall, I would definitely recommend this place to grab a few drinks, some good food, and hangout on a nice night.

If you're looking for a place in Bend that feels like a full experience from the moment you walk in, Monkless absolutely delivers. The elaborate entrance alone sets the tone--step through the door and you're instantly transported to another era. Inside, the space is stunning, with a beautifully crafted bar that feels both elegant and inviting. We ordered four different dishes to sample, and honestly, you can't go wrong with anything on the menu. Each plate was thoughtfully prepared and packed with flavor, making it hard to pick a favorite. The drink selection is just as impressive. Their beer lineup is excellent (as expected), but they also shine with creative cocktails and a solid variety of non-alcoholic options--something for everyone to enjoy. Monkless has quickly become a new favorite in Bend. Whether you're going for the ambiance, the food, excellent service or the drinks, it's an experience worth repeating.

On our visit to Bend the craving for schnitzel was so strong that we chose Monkless for the signature pork schnitzel only to discover that it was out of stock. How do you run out of your signature dish? We were forced to pivot to french dip sandwiches and braised short ribs. Tragic. The short ribs were pretty tender and filling, enjoyed the soft carrots, the mashed potatoes didn't really hold up just kind of turned into mush slop. The french dip was decent but a little bland. Just ok. The flight was good but only one of the beers was European and the one we liked the most there was the least of. The "flight" is pour your own which is a little strange normally flights come poured. A decent experience but not a great one. Disappointing that the signature dish we came there for was unavailable.

Went for lunch today with a local friend who specifically chose Monkless as our meeting place. Great food again, just like the last few times we visited here. It's one of our go to spots when we visit Bend. We ordered the poutine and it was so fantastic. The flavors of the meat, gravy and potatoes and cheese---and then topped with an egg was splendid. Wow. Hubby ordered a French dip sandwich which was also flavorful, especially the beef, the bun and au jus! I ordered a delicata squash soup and it was packed with a squash flavor. It was very rich and I think I would have preferred it to be more soupier instead of a mashed potato-like , thick consistency. But it was a healthy meal. Service was nice from Alex. The place was fairly quiet and not too busy on a Thursday at lunchtime. Looking forward to coming again in the future.

Lunch Review - Monkless Belgian Ales - Bend, Oregon This review is based on numerous weekday lunch experiences at Monkless Belgian Ales, ranging from lunch for two to lunch for twenty. The most recent was a lunch for two on Wednesday, October 1, 2025. The dining experience at Monkless is extremely consistent. The restaurant is seldom more than half full for weekday lunches. They offer both indoor and outdoor seating, each very comfortable, with one of the most pleasant patios in the Old Mill District. The restaurant is always clean and well maintained. The staff is consistently friendly and professional. Seating is usually prompt, followed by beverage requests, meal ordering, food service, and checkout. All of this happens at a nice pace, neither slow nor rushed. There is always at least one mid-meal check-in to ensure everything is going well. When I have hosted larger group lunches, the staff has managed these very well. During summer they do not accept reservations, but you can call ahead and give them notice. When I have done this, they have been prepared and ready for the larger group. The food at Monkless is good to very good. I am never disappointed, but I also never leave thinking, "Wow, that was incredible." Their menu is what I would refer to as gastropub. It also changes over time. But their Belgo burger tends to be a staple and popular fall back. Aligned with their Belgian theme, mussels are also a regular feature on their menu. I should note that I do not drink, though Monkless offers a very good selection of Belgian-inspired craft beers. Friends and colleagues I've dined with have commented on how much they enjoy them. Their prices are in-line with many similar lunch offerings in Bend. Many of their entrees come in around the $20 mark with some scaling to the $30 mark. With tip, our lunch for two came in at $48.75. If you are in the Old Mill District and need a timely meal with quality food, polite professional service, and a comfortable space, Monkless Belgian Ales is a very solid option.

Monkless was a great experience. We didn't try the beer on this visit, but the food was outstanding and easily the highlight. Everything was thoughtfully prepared and full of flavor. The service was excellent as well -- attentive, friendly, and made the whole meal feel relaxed and enjoyable. The atmosphere was super cool too. It has a really unique vibe that makes the space feel special and adds to the overall experience. Definitely looking forward to coming back and trying the beer next time.

We always love to come to Monkless when we are in Bend. We were there for Brad Paisley's concert. We actually ate here twice while we were here :) The atmosphere here is always buzzing, the outdoor seating has great views. Our waiter very friendly and kept us hydrated. First night we shared the sausage board with friends . Such a beautiful plate and delicious. Second night my husband and I shared the Ruben. It was packed with meat and perfectly toasted bread . I would get that again I got cool Hoodie and husband got a shirt . We will be back thank you for always being consistent with food , drinks and the friendly staff .

My first brewery experience in Bend and I'm so glad to randomly find this place that I enjoyed everything. Outdoor seating have nice breeze and river view. Definitely a good spot for a beer. Sausage plates have different pickles and sauce to go with the 3 kinds sausage. It's not greasy and tasty. Pretzel is beyond my expectations. I didn't really like doughy pretzels but this one is light and fluffy. I definitely ate a bit more than I should. Service is quick and everyone is friendly!

Definitely a handful of Belgian selections! We ordered a flight and sat upstairs which felt nice. Service was good. The indoor and outdoor area is nice to have and it being on the second floor gave it a nice feel. If you're into Belgian beers, this is your spot!

Monkless was a great find! We came here to try the beers and left, loving the food! We loved many of their beers and I bought a Trinity to take with me! Now lets talk about how delicious their food items are! My personal favorite was their split pea soup, which was much heartier with sausage than I was expecting and loved . The homemade bread is out of this world, the sausage board and all their sandwiches were top-notch. You really can't go wrong with any of the choices. All the staff were kind and helpful and all seem to love their job! Inside the decor was gorgeous. I loved every little detail from the lights to the bar details.

We parked nearby at the gear thrift store and then wanted to find a brewery where we could chill, have some drinks, and play card games. We looked up breweries and saw this one was within walking distance, so we came here! The inside has really cool decor including several tables made from huge oak trees, exposed brick, and medieval-style wagon wheel chandeliers hanging from above. My husband and a friend split one of their beer flights which came with 3 full size beers, so it was perfect for the two of them to split to try out a few different types. I got their hazelnut espresso martini and really liked it! My next drink was their featured cider which was a berry flavor that was tart but not too strong. Everyone seemed to like their drinks and we enjoyed hanging out here for a couple of hours. The back patio has a view of the nearby river, it was really nice to watch the sunset with that view; the back patio would be the move during the warmer months. I'm glad we came to try this brewery out!

WOW... so happy I came here! First off, it's near Tesla chargers for you Tesla drivers. The ambience, the food, the presentation... wow! Staff were friendly and helpful to recommend me beers. Drinks: 1) their house made gingerale was really good 5/5 2) beer flight: was really crispy and flavorful & for 10 bucks?! 3) slippery slope: like a frozen hot chocolate with booze 5/5 Food: Beet& Truffle goat cheese salad: super flavorful. The cheese wasn't overpowering either. 5/5 Bolognese: perfect portion, mixture of protein/carbs, and flavors were good. 5/5 Pork Schnitzel plate: get this! Such a cool presentation. I stumbled upon this place from Yelp and saw that they have steamed mussels!!! So I immediately zoomed my way there, was quickly greeted by the hostess who was wiping down their menus (I appreciate the thought to not give me dirty, sticky menus). Grabbed a seat at the bar and the bartender, Ryan was quick to greet me and grab me a water before I ordered. I got a beer flight for $10, that's a steal and the spicy cajun butter mussels. Wow! Really good first impression. The building itself is pretty amazing, with cozy inviting decor. That being said, we opted for the covered and mostly enclosed patio, which was heated. Our server arrived soon and had a great delivery, attitude, and style. My buddy and I ordered 4 beer flights and my wife got The Slippery Slope (a cold brew based, chocolate, Bailey's concoction). The beers were all pretty tasty and true to style. The Reverie Pils was prob my fav today. The 3 of us split the poutine and it was delicious. We all just wanted a snack , but couldn't stop going back for more until the plate was clean! The only comment we shared that wasn't overly positive is that the cheese curds seemed concentrated in one spot of the dish instead of spread throughout. Not the end of the world, but we had to work so everyone got a bite of everything. Took a trip to Bend for my 21st birthday, and this was the perfect way to start off! We got the pretzel, sausage platter, and built our own flights. I got Saison, Restitution, Trinity, and Meet Your Maker. Saison was so good, just a smooth Belgian style beer. I thought Trinity was interesting, kind of sweet but also peaty, almost like a whiskey taste, oddly enough. But I liked it. Meet Your Maker was absolutely delicious. Smooth, dark, chocolatey, just lovely. I'll definitely be back for a pint next time i'm in Bend, and highly recommended it to anyone in the area! read more

I visited Bend for the first time and stopped by Monkless. I was excited to try their Belgian beers instead of the too-common IPAs at many other breweries. They have ~14 beers on draft with a good range of Belgian styles like saison, golden ale, dubbel, and tripel. I had the 8 beer tasting flight ($20, 4 oz each) which was a slight discount over ordering a la carte. This let me try half the menu. Everything was solid and matched the menu descriptions. I also really liked the brewery decor -- they put a lot of effort in to make it feel like a real Belgian brewery and not just another generic brewpub. We sat on the back patio and had a nice view, although part of it was of a parking lot :( Service was good. read more

When I arrived only half an hour before closing, hoping to try just one beer before I had to leave Bend the following morning, Al was SO warm and welcoming that I got a flight and Marinière à la Crème. Al checked with the kitchen TWICE to make sure I could safely eat my mussels (I become very ill if I inadvertently eat pepper or chili flakes). I've definitely had better German food. This was just ok. We had the schnitzel dinner plates. We all just thought it was meh. We went to Bangers and Brews the next day and liked their food better. Although one was sausages and one was schnitzel, we just weren't impressed with the schnitzels. The beer was also just ok. Nice that they had both indoor and outdoor seating and it was fairly busy at dinner time, which is a good sign. read more

What an incredible find along the waterfront in Bend. We walked here from our hotel and were greeted by a warm, beautifully decorated space. Reservations are needed for indoor seating but the heated patio was available for non-reservation guests. We ordered the vegan Alsatian tart (which looks like a thin crust pizza), the cream of endive soup, the pork schnitzel sandwich (this was HUGE), and the belgo burger. Everything was delicious! We highly recommend getting the curry ketchup to go with the delicious fries. read more

A fellow Elite referred us to Monkless. He's a beer/Belgian connoisseur. Our experience was top notch all the way around. Our server was prompt and courteous. The employees look like they have fun working here. Everything we had was flavorful and fresh. Poutine was heavy (good heavy) and layered with shredded meat, gravy, fried egg, and cheese. We also had chicken pesto Sando, salmon Sando, orzo pasta salad, avocado hummus plate, and the beet and truffle goat cheese salad. We were happy with everything. This is a cool place overlooking the river with an outdoor deck and garage doors that open up the inside to out. The lighting is modern and different. Good tunes. Everyone seemed happy and loving life. And, yes, the brew is good. read more

We went there yesterday because we were excited about trying their style of beers. They seated us and after 15 minutes of being ignored we got up and left. It wasn't busy at all. Two employees were standing 15 feet from us and didn't even bother to check on us. We walked out and they didn't acknowledge us when we left either. Very disappointing to say the least. read more

Very scenic veranda overlooking the Deschutes River. Quality Belgian styled beers with a nice selection of elevated pub grub. Great service and just one of those places that are a must when visiting Bend. Coming from CA we always make it a point to stop here. Or is it a pint? Their peppercorn beer is award winning but their pils is the best on a hot day. read more

We came here with a group and everyone really enjoyed their food and drinks. We sat outside, which is dog friendly and has a nice view. The menu had lots of interesting items that aren't usually found at a brewery. Their cocktails were also unique and tasted fresh, my favorite being the Island Escape - it was so good I ordered two! I wanted something light for dinner and ordered the hummus plate, which was huge! The pita bread was very soft and everything on the plate was delicious. Great beer and great atmosphere. The food was disappointing - fried pub chow, mostly. I ordered a split pea soup and got a dark meat broth with what looked like a few lentils at the bottom. When I expressed surprise and they explained that they do something totally different with what they call a spit pea soup (and I didn't eat it) they charged me nonetheless. read more

Where the Martin Luther's at? Well, this place has no german monk in sight. However, there are plenty of options for light and dark beers. I ordered a flight of 4 beers. All the light beers were delightful and exquisite. Lots of seating, space for large parties and small intimate settings. I enjoyed this establishment and you will too. read more

Stopped in here today. Our waiter had help from a lady named Alyssa. She gave some great local recommendations and helped steer me in a really good experience. The view is incredible. Makes me want to float the river. We tried the Poutine, small salad and some of the protein. Really enjoyed the hatch chile sausage. Very clean environment. Enjoyed the music variety too! I made an account just for this review. I am appalled. I was out with my husband enjoying some of monkless's fine schnitzel's, when I overheard something from the kitchen. I asked the server about who was working that night, and they said that there was a man named Joe. I overheard Joe speaking about how the white race is above others, and using very hostile language towards staff. We ducked in for a drink to escape a looming rainstorm. It quickly turned in to a "biblical" hail storm. I cannot express how impressed I was at how the staff handled it. They got all the patrons safely off the deck and indoors, cleaned up the actual drifts of hail once it was over- getting drenched in the process- and I never saw one staff member complain despite being soaked to the bone. They were calm, efficient and really we all had an absolute blast watching nature unleashed. Oh, and the food and drink were good too! Great food and good beer. They were super nice and accommodating to our two dogs... 90lb and 105lb puppies. We had a Belgian Beer "Hazy Day in Brussels something and a spiked hot chocolate "Choco Loco" The food was really good. Forgot to take a pic, but here is what was not left. Established in 2014.

In October 2014 Monkless started brewing on a 1 BBL system and production capacity quickly became an issue. In Spring of 2016 Monkless increased production capacity and moved into a new space in the urban brewers district on the northeast side of Bend, OR. Now brewing on a 10 BBL system with a small taproom and growler fill area this is a great place to find Belgian beers!

Meet the Business Owner: Todd C.

Head Brewer and founder Todd Clement is certainly no monk, however his work ethic and devotion to this craft is unparalleled. During his travels in Belgium and throughout Europe over the past decade, he acquired a taste for and deep appreciation of traditional Belgian ales. Thus, his passion for the style was born. Now Todd is the creative force behind Monkless Belgian Ales. With a PhD in Organic Chemistry from UC Davis and an extensive background in process chemistry, his meticulous attention to detail ensures our beers achieve a high standard and are consistent with every batch.

I recently visited the Monkless Belgian Ale restaurant in Bend, OR, and overall it was a pretty good experience. The vibes are cool with a cozy German atmosphere inside and a great outdoor area overlooking the river. The beer selection is impressive, and they serve generous pours for beer flights--definitely a highlight if you're into discovering new brews. A few things to note: the seating is small, so even on a Monday evening there was sometimes a wait to get seated, and on weekends a reservation is highly recommended. The food was solid overall (I'd give it a 4/5), but I had mixed feelings about some dishes. The beets and goat green salad were top-notch. The pretzel was really good--although $16 for it seemed a bit steep. Unfortunately, I was a bit disappointed by the pork schnitzel. Despite my excitement to try it, I found it dry and chewy, with only the middle part being somewhat pleasant. In hindsight, I might skip that one. All in all, Monkless Belgian Ale is a great place to check out if you're looking for good beer, a great atmosphere, and a mix of solid food offerings. Best spot. I'm coming back for a second time! This is a great spot in Bend to grab some food and a typical Belgian ale! Great variety of traditional beers with a ton of depth. Delicious dishes included the brussel sprouts, prawn croquettes, avocado hummus platter, sausage, and poutine. The Deschutes River may be seen from the rear patio, where you can sip beer and observe people floating down the river. The employees went above and beyond to ensure that we loved our food and drinks. They were helpful and made our experience extremely great. Additionally, very pet-friendly. This is a racist establishment. Went in for a beer and a burger and sat out on the deck. Like many others I slipped off my sandals as it was a bright sunny beautiful day. But unlike everyone else that was there I am not white. I was told I had to keep my sandals on because it is the law. I told them there is no such law and pointed out others that doing the same thing. The continued to harass me. I had placed my order already so waited for my food. The burger had a ton of salt on it. Ive been craving for poutine and croquettes lately and a co-worker has recommended this brewpub also suggesting we should go there after work with the whole team. When we arrived, the staffs were very accomodating, and very kind. They have good recommendations too, so aside from poutine and croquettes, we also had brussels, belgo burger and some excellent beer!! The food is good, I am very happy that my cravings were satisfied and the expectations were meet. They have lots of options, a fun place to go! read more

We had a fun and memorable meal at Monkless Belgian Ales. The chunks of braised beef melted in my mouth like butter. The cheese curds were chewey and flavorful. Came with a group for lunch and we all agreed that these guys are on par with some of the best Belgian style ales. Add to that is the amazing view- you have a winning spot. A must see in Bend. Would definitely go back with the family. read more

Nice spot. It was a sunny day so the glare from the protective vinyl sheets on the patio was pretty bright but nice outdoor seating otherwise. This place is worth coming to. Definitely recommend making a reservation for dining in. read more
