I walked in, off the street. I was visiting from Boston and read the great online reviews. Janika spoke with me before the haircut, I had nothing to add. She then gave me the best part of my day, a head and neck rub while washing my hair. She then cut my hair meticulously. I even closed my eyes and relaxed while she worked on my hair. First off: despite the entry saying they accept credit cards, they don't let you tip by credit card. You need to bring cash! I got a good-looking haircut with Janika. It does look good. But it didn't *feel* good. When I ran my hands through my hair at the end once she was done, it was full of tangles. Even after running my hands through a few times I still kept snagging on tangles. So even though the haircut looked good I walked out feeling pretty disappointing because for a 60-70$ haircut I expect to actually get my hair combed for the cutting? FINALLY!! I found an amazing hair stylist! After years of searching for one, I'm so glad I stumbled upon Kelly at MonoKrome. From the get go, Kelly was warm and friendly, and took the time to understand exactly what it was I wanted. She spent at least 10 minutes discussing the hair cut I had in mind, telling me what would work with my face and what wouldn't. Once we settled on the look, she went to town on my hair, fixing a bad mushroom cut and, successfully transforming it into an edgy/fun angled bob with a fringe. As she was cutting, I got nervous about the copious amounts of hair that were dropping to the floor, but in the end, she literally completely changed my look while not changing the overall vision throughout the process. I really enjoyed my experience with her and am very happy with the final result. I can safely say that this is officially the only salon I'll go to as long as she works there. If you're looking for someone who actually listens to you and takes into consideration your needs/hair type/face etc, Kelly is your girl. 5 stars! read more

While visiting Montreal, I was in desperate need of a bang trim! I called MonoKrome and scheduled a same day appt for the afternoon. I was greeted by Kelly and enjoyed a relaxing shampoo and wash followed by a bang trim and a blowout and style. Kelly was really nice and did a great job on my hair. She took her time and was very through. It was nice to have some pretty waves and shorter bangs (!) during my day exploring Montreal...not to mention it looked good in our pictures too! The salon was also clean and open and airy- prices were reasonable as well. Not sure when I will be returning to Montreal again but when I do and am in need of a hair cut, I will definitely reach back out to Kelly! read more

Melissa is the only hairdresser I've had who understands exactly the shade of blonde I want. She also has never tried to force any hairstyle on me the way other hair dressers have in the past (many want to cut my hair really short). She's really friendly and I'm never bored sitting in that chair. My friend went there and had her haircut with someone else (can't remember the name) and it's the best haircut she's ever gotten. I love going to this salon. The atmosphere is very professional without being pretentious. The owners, who are a young couple work there. They are also both teachers, consequently they keep up with the latest. They have been bringing in apprentices from Japan which adds to the experience of a visit there. The only good thing I got from this place was their cappuccino. Maybe they should specialize in coffee. The staff was so unwelcoming and rude and when I showed Melissa a picture of what I wanted and specified how curly my hair was she over looked my request and my hair turned out a total zig saggy mess. read more

I made an appointment online with owner Katia, but when I arrived at the salon was shipped off to Melissa without anyone addressing that I booked with Katia. Katia was at the salon. I find this extremely disrespectful. What's the point of being able to choose your stylist when you book online if your choice is ignored? Melissa was very nice, but the haircut is not great. The layering of my hair is so odd. My hair is long but I can't wear it in a topknot anymore because there are too many short strands that stick out everywhere, and a ponytail looks bad because of the uneven strands. Genuinely nice people. Very small salon, and I like it that way! Not every girl feels comfortable laying her head bare in a stranger's hands, and the last thing I need or want to pay for is attitude! Unfortunately, Montreal is overrun with hairstylists who think they are God's gift to mankind. It's just hair, peeps! Monokrome understands this and sits right in the middle of making you feel pretty and glam and not a caricature of oneself or yes, a poodle. They are chill, their prices are right, and they get the job done, no fuss! The owners are super sweet, and Kelly, the other stylist there, is always bubbly and nice. I've tried many salons over the years, and Monokrome makes me feel pretty whenever I leave, yet without the cringe factor of having had to sit through a dissertation on how gifted my stylist is and how lucky I am to sit in his/her chair! read more

Amazing service. Really top notch! As soon as you walk in, you are greeted and offered a drink. You don't need an appointment, but if you come randomly, they might not be able to take you in for 30 minutes, which is what happened to me. It's totally fine, I just went to a coffee shop and ate a little snack while I waited. I came back, and I was treated as a valued customer. So much emphasis on "valued." I had the pleasure of getting my hair cut by Janika. She was very friendly and professional. As soon as she was finished with her client, she came up to me when I was reading a book and apologized for the long wait, and asked me to wait a minute so as to clean up her station. Mind you, I've never been to a hair salon: I've always gone to a barber for the simplicity of it all, so I don't know if whatever I'm saying is normal or not. She was very warm and welcoming, not to mention every cut that she made had a lot of thought put into it. I was not rushed at all, and was even encouraged to go to the washroom where they had face towels and lint rollers and such to clean up my person. For $37 + tip, you get a hair wash at the beginning with a scalp massage(?), the haircut, rinse, and finally hair wax at the end. Like I said before, I've never been to a hair salon before, but this was a very good treat! I'd definitely recommend this place just for the service alone =) read more
