I had a major issue with my graphics cards in my laptop and Dell was useless. I called Monolith since they were local and was pleasantly surprised with their professionalism. A quick service call later and they were able to quickly diagnose the issue (my cards were fried, apparently a known issue with this model) and a replacement was needed. They got the replacements in their quickly and handled the entire situation. The tech was very knowledgeable and friendly and explained the issue to me in a way that didn't make me feel like an idiot like a lot of telephone based support reps have a tendency to do. I'm skipping Dell in the future and just calling Monolith. read more

If I had to describe Monolith in one word it would be INEPT. I'm not sure about the previous posters, but Monolith is one company that I will never deal with again. I have had a myriad of problems in dealing with this "company" which I will detail a few of the more damaging for you. First, they do not have a storefront. Their address is actually a mailbox inside a UPS store. Now normally this would not be a problem except for the fact that they took my computer off site and would not return my phone calls for three days. Completely irresponsible on their part. Second, their "back office" will only communicate with you through e-mail. I'm not sure how many of you have a back up computer laying around your house to check your email but I do not. This was especially infuriating when I explained to them that any contact would need to be done via telephone. I can't exactly camp out in the public library checking my e-mail for Monolith to get back to me. Finally, once I actually got the computer back (a week later than they had promised it by the way), it was still buggy and required me to use another firm who in two hours solved the problem which Monolith spent a week working on. Not only that, they were able to fix it on-site without having to take my computer to their "lab." Do yourselves a favor and steer clear of this embarrassment of a "company." read more

Personally, I am a big fan of thunderstorms and lightning. I awoke one morning to find that my computer did not share my appreciation. I quickly realized that my beloved laptop was dead. Initially, I freaked out because; 1. I know nothing about computers, 2. I don't have any IT friends nearby, 3. I don't exactly have the finances to run out and buy a new computer. Being the savvy Chicagoan I am, I went right to Yelp for a referral. I called Monolith because they had really good reviews and were located nearby. I left them a message and they got back to me within the afternoon. Bill at Monolith clearly explained the process, their pricing and about how long it would take. I was also happy to learn that they come out to pick up the computer and do the initial diagnostic evaluation in home. Bill was able to come the next day to take a look at my very sick laptop. He was friendly, professional and clearly more knowledgeable than myself. Within the first half hour he was able to diagnose the problem and took the computer back to his shop to figure out the extent of the damage and hopefully recover my old data. The data recovery took about two days, but Bill kept me updated even over the weekend. I had filed a claim with my renter's insurance company and Bill provided all the documentation I needed to complete the process. He even threw together an estimate to replace the laptop and offered to conference call in with the insurance adjuster in case they were low-balling the replacement costs. AMAZING! The whole process was unbelievably stress-free and Monolith is completely responsible for that. I now have a fantastic new laptop with all of my recovered data, thanks to Bill and Monolith. I was so impressed with this company and would recommend them to anyone. read more

With his ability to troubleshoot I'm pretty sure he would have thrived in the wild wild west. I find that a lot of computer consultants I deal with have a built in sense of smugness. Over and Above. Bill and the team at Monolith provided excellent customer service. My computer issue was more in-depth than originally anticipated and what set Monolith apart was the consistent contact updating me on computer. I didn't have to sit and wonder what was happening. They were very responsive and communicative. I also appreciate the time Monolith took to explain what was happening with my computer (granted most of it was over my head) but Bill did try to break it down to my level of understanding. On a final note- the prices were very reasonable. I would highly recommend Monolith to any of my friends and I will certainly use them again should new computer issues arise. read more

I'm going to be honest, I know next to nothing about software. I know some of it is on my computer, and sometimes, I need more of it on there. I don't usually know how to do that in an efficient manner. Monolith helped me when I couldn't wrap my head around the downloads, plug-ins, updates, and whatnot in time for me to use my new programs for an important assignment. Then, after my computer crashed, they helped me get those files back for finals. The free pickup and delivery were nice options for me since I don't have time to drive my computer all over town. I recommend Monolith over Geek Squad any day, because the former will get you your stuff back in a timely fashion whereas the latter will hang on to your computer...and hang on to it...and hang on to it some more. read more

II had a really great experience working with Monolith recently - they were quick, efficient and very reasonable. Last month, a pipe burst in the ceiling right above where I normally work on my laptop. I was out at the time this happened, and came home to a quite a scene, with my entire desk, including my laptop, covered in water. I was afraid at this point that my machine had suffered extensive water damage. Since I really have no clue how to deal with the hardware of my machine or how to trouble shoot any sort of data recovery, I called around to some local companies which quoted me up to a 10-day turn around period and a price between $1300 to $2300, both of which I simply could not afford. When I talked to the people at Monolith, they came and picked up my laptop and had it back to me, with all of my data recovered, after 3 business days. My total came to less than $500. I would highly recommend this company to anyone in trouble like I was! I was very pleased with the quality and efficiency of their service. read more

For a laptop screen with an internal crack, Bill assured a quick job and a completion date of a few days. Bill quoted a price that couldn't be found anywhere and even offered to pick up the laptop. If only I knew then what I know now. Because Bill picked up the laptop without taking it out of it's packaging, he didn't notify me until days later (on the finish date) that his company is not proficient at replacing Macbook screens. The next few months (literally, months) were spent trying to desperately work out a solution with a company that blatantly lied from the outset. During one conversation Bill would be the Monolith owner and act as if he had everything solved. During another conversation, Bill would play the part of incompetent tech guy that was in the dark until his boss gave him instructions. At one point Bill even went so far as to threaten me if I didn't remove a Yelp review. After opening my computer, not fixing it, and offering 15% off my next service, Bill threatened to return my gutted computer if the Yelp review was not removed. So as far as finishing ALL of their projects in a timely manner and being good listeners, it's just not true. I would not recommend Monolith's services to my worst enemy. read more

I've had a great experience using Monolith. I found that their service went above and beyond any other tech company that I have dealt with and in my line of work I deal with a lot of BS from other companies. They finish all their projects in a timely manner and most importantly they are good listeners (that's probably why everything gets done correctly!). I would recommend them for anyone that needs help with their computers. I'm sure there other services are just as great. read more

Dropped my Dell laptop on my very hard floor and knew it wouldn't be good based on the height I dropped it from, and the loud bang. It would not turn on, do anything. I called Monolith in a panic and Bill said he would come to my apartment within half an hour and look at it-wow! However, I tried one more time to turn it on before he come over, and sure enough it started. I called Bill right away and he walked me through a thorough re-boot process so that I could be sure it was working...luckily it was. However, Bill took the time on the phone to make sure it was ok-no charge. The customer service was excellent! I know who I'm calling next time I have a problem. Thanks Bill! read more
