I have been ordering cakes from Monroe Bakery for 25 years. I would like to know what happened to the great cakes I used to get. I just ordered a cake for my husband's birthday and it is dry not moist, and the frosting is not buttercream anymore. I have to say I'm really disappointed. I will not order from them anymore. Enjoyed stopping in to pick up a few baked goodies ahead of Paczki Day March 4. The owner was kind and gave me a run down of all the offerings. I enjoyed my cheese danish, brownie, and loaf of raisin egg bread. Parking is easy and prices are reasonable. Definitely worth a visit! read more

I'd be here everyday, if I lived in this hood. Big selection of breads and pastries. One specialty to try are the pasties. We had a beef and rutabaga pastie (really), and it was quite good. The dough is a little thick, but otherwise a terrific item. Would have loved to try other items. Clean shop, easy parking, friendly, knowledgeable people. read more

Wow, this was not good. I arrived and it looks like a typical old fashioned bakery inside. Donut and cookie options were limited. Cakes and cupcakes looked good. I got a cinnamon roll donut and a oatmeal raisin cookie. The cinnamon roll donut was not as good as a gas station donut. The oatmeal raisin cookie was so bad that I actually spit it out in the car while I was driving. Horrible. Service was ok but I am surprised this place is still in business. read more

I would like to start off saying that the representative that assisted me when I first purchased my items was amazing. Now the owner is a rude ass bitch, let me tell you why. I bought a cake for my mom on June 4, and when we cut into the cake, a piece of long hair came out. My mom and I are African-American to my knowledge, we are not mixed with anything else, so our hair texture is not straight at all. My mom was told that she could speak with the owner, to exchange the cake. The owner was very rude to my mom, did not exchange the cake and told her that she was not going to get a cake. If you look closely at the images, you can see the piece of hair and the cake, the cake is still in the box and we have yet to resolve the issue. At this point, I would just like a refund, so I will update you and let you know how this goes. read more

RANCID baked goods. Angel wings were obviously fried in RANCID oil. Other baked goods, tasted like CARDBOARD. Absolutely ZERO FLAVOR. Called them and asked for the owner to return my call. Never did. They don't deserve even one star. DON'T waste your money on this place. They could easily make people sick. Again, RANCID, RANCID, RANCID! Take your pick, rancid flavor or no flavor. YECH. Saturday morning I purchased 4 donuts and Canolis thinking they'd be fresh from the oven. They were awful. Donut texture was heavy and bland and certainly not fresh baked. Cannoli shell was almost soft and not the crispness I expected. I'm always looking for a good bakery and have found a few but this is not one I'll return to. read more

I hate to knock down a local place, but this place is awful. I went in late morning to buy some pastries. I got about five different types of pastries. Each and every one of them was dry and stale. First I took a bite of the cherry pastry. It was tough, dry and stale. I took a bite of the cheese pastry and same thing. Everything I got was like this. If I didn't know any better, I would say this stuff had been sitting on a shelf somewhere for five days before they tried to sell it. read more

No frill deli meat and pastries store that makes pretty good sandwiches. Mom and pop style service where I the dialog went like this once: Me: "Can I have another napkin." Store: "I already gave you one." Me: "It gets pretty messy when I eat my sandwich, so I need another one." Store: "Everyone gets one napkin. You need to leave napkins for other customers." I've never had such a hard time trying to get 2 napkins. They are extremely environmentally friendly or really cheap. Additonally, service here could be really slow. Despite these issues, I still went through the troubles to get sandwiches from this place because it was really good. I recommend their ham sandwich with sweet peppers. Yum. read more

The very best jumbo Nut Roll ever only 5 bucks each so far trying the Almond and Walnut OMG, Canollis with Nuts or Chocolate Chips, Cookies, Cake got Hot Cross Buns, these Bistro filled with Spinach n Chesse my addiction. Hey a small sandwich counter at back and a couple tables we gonna do lunch one day. This place will take you back let's say 50 year's on the cozy design and the friendly service and super prices. Extremely rude and unprofessional staff. They were out of egg salad, tuna and chicken salad. So I asked for a turkey, cheddar on white. I was told by the older woman, dark hair with glasses that she didn't slice any cheddar today. I could clearly see it in the deli show case. So I asked if she'd have time to slice it. She rolled her eyes at this. She was "out" of everything I ordered. Another woman rang me up. I purchased two sandwiches so my total was around $10.00 When I got to the car I took a bite and realized it was like a Velveeta, American cheese. I felt kind of awkward so I asked my husband to go back in and ask them to re-make. He told me that they refused to make it. Told him to eat it because it was still a good sandwich. He also claimed they called me wrong. He asked for a refund and was refused. They told him to call back in the morning and ask the owner for a refund. So he left the wrong sandwiches behind. We were never refunded our ten dollars. I guess the products are pretty decent. But will not go back and I suggest if you go here make sure you understand there is a no refund policy. Went here last week I've been here plenty of times but never for a sandwich. I was coming from Dialysis I was starving but had a doctor's appointment down the street and would have had to wait in there for two hours before I could eat. I ordered an Italian sandwich cold cut they let you choose from a few breads the one I chose was hard as a rock the person making it can clearly tell that bread wasn't edible but she made the sandwich anyways. People who don't give a hoot about what they sell folks should never deal with food! I would have never gave out that hard bread to anybody. The cold cuts they use are really good though so I ate the meat and cheese that was on it and called it a day but I will never order another one. Their other stuff is not all that great either but they get a lot of business though they've been there a long time. I didn't take a picture it wasn't worth it. read more

I bought an Italian sandwich today. I ate it when I got home. The meat was falling out. Most of the meat was old and black. I took out the bad meat and ate the rest. I was hungry. I am very disappointed that the sandwich wasn't as good as the first time . I had one. I also asked to put a little bit of the Italian dressing so the bread wont be soaked but I guess the owner didn't hear me. I couldn't hold the sandwich . The bread was too soggy. This time around, I found out that we have a sever tree nut allergy to be cautious of & when I talked to the bakery they reassured me that they take the necessary precautions so I wouldn't have to worry. On my two recent visits, the service was extremely friendly. The first time, it was around 9am and I wanted something warm for breakfast. All I saw was the pepperoni and cheese roll, which I asked for. The counter person then told me that they make a bacon, egg, and cheese croissant sandwich. I pulled the trigger and was glad I did. The croissant was buttery and soft, the eggs were real, and, holy hell, the bacon was legit and plentiful. I was impressed. I bought the pepperoni roll anyway (for lunch later), and also grabbed a chocolate/peanut butter cupcake. The cupcake was moist, and the frosting was fluffy...orgasmic. I've gone back for the cupcakes again, and every type I've tried had been great, and so is the service. Highly recommended! read more

I stopped in today to get a quick lunch and was unimpressed with the cleanliness of the food prep area. The deli slicer looked like they had cut several different meats on it without cleaning it and it had pieces of deli meat all over it that looked crusty. There were 3-4 deli meats left out on the counter that should always be in the fridge when not being sliced to avoid growing bacteria that will get you sick. Since I was already there and did not have time to go elsewhere (even though I though about it) I ordered a sandwich. When I ate the sandwich I found two pieces of plastic in with the meat of the sandwich. Clearly the staff slicing the meat and making the sandwich are not paying attention and instead serving bacteria and plastic filled sandwiches. I will not be back again. read more

Monroe Bakery used to have the best cakes and frosting but I don't know if there's a new baker or they made the cake we ordered too early but our cake was so dry! It also had crumbs in the frosting and that frosting was hard as a rock! I'm not sure if they changed their recipes or what but it was pretty embarrassing to have everyone giving their cake pieces back including the kids! You know how bad a cake has to be for a kid not to eat it? Yep, it was that bad! We're all shocked but we agreed we're done with Monroe bakery. read more

Absolutely the best place for donuts in the Dearborn/Dearborn Heights area!! My family and I have been on the search for the best donuts, and Monroe bakery is #1! A wonderful neighborhood bakery that even has a deli and makes sandwiches! They even have pop/milk/juice cooler so that you can get your whole lunch or dinner if you want to. I have been going to this place for over 20 years and I have never had anything sub par. You can get anything from fresh donuts to napoleon's, as well as bran muffins, fresh cinnamon raisin bread and brownies. Make sure you try this place around the holidays, especially Easter! Their egg and lamb cakes are not only great tasting but they look incredible on your table! read more

The chrusciki (angel wings) are fantastic! These tend to be wider, flatter, and less brittle compared those I've had at other bakeries. They make the best beef pasties in the lower peninsula. A good crust jam-packed with potatoes, meat and veggies; available with or without rutabaga. read more

I like their bread, however their desserts are a different matter. I stopped in about a week ago and picked up a piece of cheesecake w/ fruit topping. It was amazing! Light and creamy filling and the crust was nice and moist. Today I decided to repeat that experience and again picked up some cheesecake. After a couple of bites I realized that it was not nearly as good. The crust was dry and the filling wasn't as creamy and then I found it, in the next fork full, Mold! I checked and rechecked. Mold! Then it hit me, this was the same cheesecake from last week! They were still selling the same pan of cheesecake a week later! I'm done! I'm never ever going back again. Yuck! read more

This is a rare gem. Not many bakery's left that specialize in Eastern and Southern European specialites made on premises. It's a mom and pop shop and not many frills (decor needs an update) but it more than makes ups for it the products. If you try the cream cakes, especially lemon, you will make it a staple in your house. Don't even get me started on the brownies - the best in town, period. Also, the birthday cakes cannot be beat, the buttercream frosting is the best in town. This fall they've introduced pumpkin donuts, I'm not a donut fan but I could eat a dozen on my own.
