In addition, a membership for Silver Sneakers is free. Many mornings I am the only person walking the lap lanes. Not because there are few members but because they open at 5:30 AM and everybody is not an early bird. The gym is very clean! It has two rooms equipped with every type of weight machines or cycles or treadmills. Also, free weights, kettlebells and ping pong is available. There is a soccer court and basketball court. This community gym has got a lot going for it, but it's not quite perfect…read more The things I like about this gym are: 1) Plenty machines so you never really have to wait for one 2) For a community gym, it's really very clean and the premises are quite grand 2) Airy, open space with a view out onto some grass rather than, say, a busy road 3) Very good membership rates, especially for local residents - we pay $40 a month for the two of us 4) There's an indoor running track 5) A somewhat decent selection of classes 6) The clientele is generally low key rather than scary muscle men putting your work-out to shame Things that I feel are a problem: 1) The Sunday closing time of 5pm 2) The scales are often broken 3) The people who work there don't really have a clue what's going on. I had to change my bank details for the monthly payment, and it took me the best part of a month to find an employee who could actually handle this task 4) You have to give 3 months' notice to cancel 5) There's no pay-as-you-go for classes. You have to pick one time that you're going to come every week and sign up for a whole "session" which goes on for 10 weeks or so, and pay upfront for the whole session 6) There's no Body Pump class - a personal favorite of mine 7) Sometimes the "low key clientele" like to stare at you as you puff away on the treadmill because all they're doing is walking at a 2mph pace, so they need some entertainment Looking over the two lists above, it seems as though there's really more negatives than positives, so it's somewhat surprising that I'm giving this gym 4 stars. I think what saves it for me is the low monthly price and the fact that it's a no-frills, let-you-get-on-with-it kind of gym - they're not constantly trying to sell you a "premium" membership, or get you to refer friends, like some other gyms - and what you see is what you really get as far as membership is concerned. It's just a good, honest place for the locals to work out.

Great for Programs - Gym Facilities Could Use Some TLC…read more I understand that the YMCA's strength lies in its community-centered programming, not just in being a gym--and in that regard, East Belleville YMCA does a great job. From what I observed during my trial membership, they offer excellent programming, especially for children--before and after school care and summer programs are clearly a strong focus, and it's great to see these important needs being met. My main reason for trying the Y was to evaluate whether the $49/month membership would meet my personal fitness needs, particularly in the gym/exercise area. I found a solid range of equipment available for most muscle groups, including multiple sets of free weights, squat racks, and a variety of dumbbells. The only muscle group missing dedicated support was for lateral raises. While the equipment is a bit dated, that's not necessarily a problem if it's well maintained. Unfortunately, some upkeep is needed. For example, several weight selector pins were rusted, making them difficult to use. A simple rust removal and lubrication would go a long way. I also noticed torn padding on some benches and machines, which could benefit from repair or replacement. Small improvements like these would greatly enhance the functionality and make the gym more competitive with traditional fitness centers. That said, the staff were friendly and welcoming, and the facility has a positive, community-oriented atmosphere. I'd recommend this YMCA to anyone looking for more than just a gym--particularly families and individuals interested in a wide range of programming and activities beyond fitness alone.

I've been going to this Y for many years with breaks in between and today was the first time ever a…read morestaff member has ever made me upset with an invisible rule that's not even posted. First let me start with how hot it is in this gym all year round. It's 66 degrees outside today and probably 80 in this gym. I went to the universal locker room because I skimmed over a sign that said the regular locker room is closed DAILY for cleaning from 10:45am-11:15am. So I diverged to the universal locker room not knowing what time it was without my watch on my wrist but it was after 11am. A woman is putting her coat in one of the lockers there and this female staff member with a black baseball cap, ponytail and glasses that's slowly mopping the floor in there turns around and only addresses me after I put all of my items in the locker and was getting ready to lock my items up (not the woman with gym clothes on taking up a locker space with her coat and no lock) with "Are you going to the pool or a class at the pool?" I told her no. She tells me "Well this is reserved for members going to the pool, not the main gym." I explained that I saw the cleaning sign hence why I was in this locker room. She said she didnt know about a sign and that's not for the weekend. Appalled by this, I told her I'll move to the ladies locker room while snatching all my items I had already unpacked and stormed to the ladies locker room to put my items in a locker there and put my headphones on to get my workout started. By the main desk, she proceeds to talk about me to her coworker within earshot and I stopped my workout and said "You saw the sign I was talking about, right?" She then says, "You saw the time, right?" I told her they should take it down if it's not the for the weekend. She was just plain rude and unprofessional. So I shook my head and walked away. It was an honest mistake on my part for the TIME but there was NO reason to be rude about a rule that's not even posted (I have picture proof that it's not and nor is it listed on their website), especially when there were plenty of empty, unused lockers and the main gym had 7 people EXCLUDING myself.
