Ashely did my hair for my graduation. I have incredibly curly hair and I usually wear it natural, however, under my graduation cap I was sure that would make me look like a cockier spaniel. Now, curly hair takes an incredibly long time to straighten. Ashley took the time to straighten my hair and then curl it perfectly. She put an incredible amount of spray and cream to make sure it would not frizz in the humidity. I have to say, it looked great. What really stood out to me was the fact that I was treated like a valued customer. She made sure she knew exactly what I wanted and then tried to recreate it. I am very happy with the experience. Honestly heard very good things about this place and haven't had a haircut in so long, I was very nervous since I haven't really gotten a decent haircut in quite awhile. I went in and everyone was very sweet, when I got to my stylist I was nervous and explained my situation and what I had wanted, showing a script and how I wanted my haircut, I'm a man with thick hair, i then asked if she wanted to hold onto the phone so she could use it as reference and she said it was not needed... I didn't get anything close to what I wanted with something very short when I had insisted that I wanted to keep length and more of a shape up for my cut. I was then told to live with it and if I wanted a readjustment for free to make it SHORTER. I left unhappy and completely unsure if I should ask for a refund, I paid for a mens scissor haircut ONLY and clippers were not needed for the cut I had wanted, it actually destroyed my soul to feel so much hair fall off and hit my shoulders, complete dread hit when I actually saw the result, I honestly don't even know what to say anymore, thank you for reading this read more

I cannot recommend this place more!!! I went from a having dark brown hair to pink and o blue to just plain ruined hair! My stylist, Brittney, has taken my hair from complete disaster to amazing! It's blonder than I thought it could get, and every haircut I get from her is amazing! U know it's good when u drive home in a rush so u can look at urself and flip ur hair back and forth!!!! I am shocked by the lack of care, professionalism, and integrity at this salon. I got a balayage hair color done with stylist Alexa Hughes and I went in twice, because the first time she did not give me what I asked for which was much blonder than the result, and when I went in a second time and spent a total of seven hours at the salon I still did not get what I asked for and this is the result.. My hair is completely botched, and uneven. The worst part is this was for my wedding day. I have reached out to Alexa and the manager and no one has gotten back to me. I am left feeling extremely embarrassed and robbed. Please reconsider using this salon, with the lack of response and care, I would most certainly not trust this salon again read more

Complete nightmare. 1st appointment with Paloma. Showed her inspiration pic as shown below. Left BLONDE with barely any no root showing. Roots were orange and there was a dark brown ring around the bottom of my hair. No blending. Paloma no longer works there. 2nd appointment with Brittany. Super grateful she volunteered to fix me up. Left happy until I got home to find that my right side was so much lighter than left. Texted Brittany photos and told me to come in this week to fix it (again) Straightened my hair for the first time to find patches that made me look like a cheetah. Called and explained situation. Decided to come in with my friend before we went to lunch to see if it would be worth fixing it at Monroe before waiting all day to come at 6pm. Explained what I was seeing, friend simply mentioned I could not wear my hair up in a pony tail. Brittany immediately got defensive and said "i'm not dealing with you coming at me like that" and pointed at both of us. Keep in mind I texted Brittany and she was fully aware of me coming in to fix it. No rude tones used as I should have been rude considering this was my 3rd time coming in. Took me to the back, I was balling my eyes out as the manager was on the phone and both her and Brittany seemed appalled that I came in with my friend for moral support. They made me feel like I was an inconvenience. Told Brittany that I wasnt coming at her but she does need to understand my frustration. Both assumed I thought I was insulting their work and calling them bad stylists. Clearly if I thought that, I wouldn't have trusted them to fix it. I was told that my hair did not take to the color. made me explain every single dying experience in attempt to blame this on another salon. told me they could "add in shading" with some type of bonding serum to even everything out. Manager asked Brittany if she was okay with helping me out today at 6pm because she was concerned about her "working late and not sleeping much since she has been working long hours." I felt she would rush this and made me feel uncomfortable about trusting her to touch my hair again. After being treated like trash, decided I will never be going back. Super unprofessional and rude after me being so understanding and trying to work with them. Spent a total of 10 hours there and a total of $300. read more

I ditto the last review about the absolute lack of integrity, professionalism, and care, save yourself and your hair, do not go to this salon! Alexa was 20 minutes late, she did not listen to anything I asked for, she completely ruined my hair. She colored it something similar to her hair color, not mine and left all the dye on my face. I looked like someone had dumped shoe polish on my head and face, awful. The worst part is after contacting the salon no one responded, not one person at that salon cared enough to even call back or make an attempt for resolution. I have since learned the main stylists left this studio and opened another salon right before my visit, the remaining stylist there are trainees. It has been one month still zero response therefore I feel my only option is to write a review in hopes to prevent this from happening to another unsuspecting client. Save your money and save your hair, I do not recommend patronize this establishment!!!! read more

Monroe Hair Studio has temporarily moved to their sister spa, Olivia Presley, on old Ranch Road 12, while the downtown location on the square gets a facelift. I had an appointment with Brittany and once again, it was five stars worth of great. Everyone who works in these two groups seems to sincerely love what they do, and the energy in the studio is magical. Of course Brittany is a rock star when it comes to hair color and cut, and I felt like a million dollars when I walked out. Oh, and I do sometimes cut my own bangs with the kitchen scissors between appointments, and she does not even berate me for it! She repairs my feeble attempts. I needed a quick fix for my hair and they scheduled me the next day, very convenient. I showed Jessica the photo of what I wanted multiple times before we got started and explained many times that I needed more of a blend of color, so there wouldn't be so much contrast between the top and bottom of the back color. I'm not sure if it's because she was too busy texting, didn't know what she was doing, or was upset that I had short hair, but she did not deliver. The cut is sloppy and not like the photo I showed her. The color in the front/top looks great, but the bottom in still so dark there's a line between the top and bottom, exactly what I'd said multiple times I didn't want. When I got home and realized this, I sent her photos and called the salon. She told me there was nothing that could be done, but would get more of what I want the next time I come in. She never followed up with me, and neither did a manager. This salon is not one that cares about its clients. They do not pay attention to what you want, and will not go out of the way for you. The atmosphere was not welcoming, with the stylists gossiping loudly between themselves and the receptionist, even with a client in the chair. Very unprofessional. If you care about your hairstyle at all, go somewhere else. read more

Brittany is a color wizard. I went to her to help me transition from dyed-dark, long hair to a natural gray/silver (which is was what I had been covering for way too long.) Using highlights, she gave me a natural-looking head of gray/silver hair. I didn't know that so much could be accomplished in one visit. This salon was referred by a friend.......I went in and met the owner, Lanna, who my appointment was with. I have to say the staff was friendly, professional and busy! I have never had such a great experience at a hair salon. I asked for prices for services and she told me exactly what it would cost, and was very reasonable! I wanted more se than I originally booked and luckily she had time! I had my hair colored to conceal highlights that were growing out, a cut, shampoo and style. The color was perfect!! And it completely conditioned my hair! I was amazed! If you have not tried this salon, I highly recommend it!! I don't understand how no one is criticizing how badly it is to get one's hair washed and rinsed. I am a short woman. However, I have never been to a salon where I had to get into a birthing position; force my body upwards to reach the sink to have my hair washed and rinsed. Note: chair was attached to the sink and did not allow for adjustments. Dirty brushes are a problem as well. read more

If zero stars was an acceptable review that is what I would leave. Not only was my service a ORANGE disaster but the service of the salon is unacceptable as well. I have called 4 times with no answer, once when I left my name and number with no call back, and another when they hung up on me and called back saying they didn't mean to. The first time I went in prior to my appointment Lana was very sweet and got me in with Jessica on short notice. Booking that appointment was a huge mistake. My natural hair color is light brunette but I have always been blonde. I asked for a more natural look between blonde and brunette (more blonde with a brunette root smudge) and I got ORANGE. I had a orange line surrounding my hair where my previous roots were. I went Saturday to my normal girl back home and she's now having to take my hair almost completely brunette (color correction) to get the orange color out and then add blonde slowly so my hair doesn't fry off after my appointment at Monroe. Jessica contacted me saying she was sorry and would fix it for me, but at this point I really am not interested in her fixing my hair. I brought in reference photos, and Jessica cut my hair WAY too short. I wanted stylish and low maintenance- which I've gotten before from other stylists... and now I look like a boy. I can't do anything with it, and she never really asked me if she was going too short or made any kind of conversation. She just said she was "in the zone" or "focusing" but a good stylist should always ask questions, and check in periodically to see if they should stay where they are or cut higher. She did not do this. Not to mention I gave her instructions about my bangs which she flat-out ignored. The last time I had hair like this, I got it from Great Clips with the instructions to give me a "boy's haircut." That cost me $13. Getting this crappy cut- even though I brought in 5 reference photos,that were all of women- cost me $40! DO. NOT. GO. HERE. Normally I go to Vicki at Cuttin' Ups, and I would recommend her. She was unavailable this time, but I'm never going to anyone else again, as long as I live in San Marcos! read more

She was nice and cut my hair perfectly, I was just extremely uncomfortable listening to how the girls talked about how drunk they got the night before. I would rather not hear about how hungover you are and how much you drank while you're holding scissors to my hair; it was extremely unprofessional! REALLY bad experience! I have long, thick hair and my stylist just butchered it! I know her intentions weren't bad, but she THINNED my hair without even asking! I have random 1 inch pieces from it and it's awful! The layering was also all wrong. Random chunk here, no flow. The only way it would look somewhat decent is if I wore it in a headband. Let me preface this by saying that I am very hard to please and have only had one person in my ENTIRE LIFE cut my hair. A friend had recommended Kate at Monroe and I am so glad I took the risk! She was amazing. She was friendly and considerate to the fact that I was very nervous. She took her time and did a great job of walking me through the entire cut to make sure it was what I wanted. I absolutely loved Devin! I have carried her card around with me since 2010 and finally called and set up an appointment after many years. It's impressive shes still at the same salon. I showed up early, so I sat in a chair and waited for a few while she finished up with a client. Although one of the other hairdressers was not so friendly (Kinda of snotty, but it was only 1 woman) the rest of the ladies were all smiles and very polite. I went here for the second time yesterday. I was obviously going back because my first haircut was decent. I also figured since I'd be seeing the owner, Lana, that I'd be getting great service. Exact opposite. She was 15 minutes late to get me into the chair as she finished up another client. Almost missed another appointment I had after the haircut because of it. She said maybe all of five things to me during the appointment. She was too busy talking to their other hairstylists about lunch options and other salon issues. I don't know how she made it look alright when I left, but the next day when I styled my hair myself I noticed that she'd completely butchered the back. Random layering all over the place and it looks like she had just completely forgotten to cut half of the hair. It seriously looks like I let a five year old cut the back while it was dry. Bottom line: Late to get the appointment started, disinterested and inattentive staff, and a terrible haircut. I will not be returning again. read more

A friend of mine recommended that I get my hair cut here (1) because it was $10 cheaper than at Salon Mink for the same services (2) because she was very satisfied with her haircut and service. I went to get a trim/even out a grown-out bob and get some bangs (which I hadn't had for 12 years). The staff was nice, but as soon as I started getting my hair cut, I noticed that some of the staff were not exactly people in my social group. My point is, people in different social groups have different aesthetics ...and it makes it harder to convey what you want when someone doesn't understand or is unfamiliar with a certain style, not to mention that they might try to interpret your look to match it to their aesthetics. Personally, I would prefer that my hairstylist be more artistically inclined, and not your "average" girl. I brought pictures that I found on the internet of what I wanted. However, I do not think this helped my stylist achieve the ideal look I wanted; it was too late to fix it. I had also asked several times for recommendations on hair products, which my stylist never gave me. She did, however, give me tips to maintain my bangs (which I ended up hiding under a headband anyway). Perhaps my expectations were too high, but I was kinda disappointed. I *might* consider going back if I had a different stylist. However, I am more likely to go back to Mink for something a little more complex at this time. read more
