Both the washer and dryer were 25 years old but worked well--until yesterday. I tried fixing the dryer without success. I Yelped and discovered Matthews Appliance. Winning. Sent a text and within 2 hours Monny arrived with tools and parts in hand. After an hour not only was the dryer functioning, the washer was also repaired even though I didn't know the top part of the agitator didn't work. These older machines run circles around the newer expensive models that break down often after just a few years. For now I'll keep these golden oldies! Looking for someone to steer you right? I called Pro Line Appliance Repair because my dishwasher was not draining properly. It was giving…read moreme a code. I thought it might be the filter so I cleaned out the filter to the best of my ability but was still getting a code. I called Pro Line and told them that the diswhasher wouldn't drain properly and gave them the error code. They said they would send someone out the next day. The service call would be $49.95 and it would be applied to the repair if I chose to do it. The tech came the next day, thinking that he was here to work on a clothes washing machine. This was likely due to a language barrier on the part of the woman who booked the appointment as our address had to be repeated over and over also due to a language barrier. When the tech got to the dishwasher he looked at it a long time, then tried to run a cycle, got the error code, looked up some stuff on his phone and called someone, then looked at the connection under the sink. Then just looked at the dishwasher some more. He did not pull it out. He did not empty the water to check the filter. Basically no hands on work was done. Then he told me that the pump was bad and that it would be $388 to replace the pump--parts, labor, tax, etc. I told him I would have to think about it and so he charged me $49.95 for the service call which I unfortunately paid. I asked him how he knew the pump was bad and he said the fact that the dishwasher was not draining indicated the pump was bad. After he left, we talked to my brother in law who lives out of town and he asked some good questions. I called Pro-Line back and talked to the man in charge. I asked again how they KNEW the pump was bad and needed to be replaced instead of a clogged filter or kinked line or something else. The boss told me that when the dishwasher will not drain they always replace the pump and that fixes it. I asked why there was a need for a service call then since I had already told them it was not draining and gave them the code and they could have given me the quote over the phone. I asked why they didn't check the filter or anything else. He said the 49.95 was just the service call. If they actually did anything to the dishwasher, it would be a $200 labor charge. He continued to justify the tech who had checked nothing and done nothing so as were getting no where and I finally hung up on him and did a little YouTube research. It turns out with my dishwasher that if the filter is clogged, it shuts down and gives an error code. After the filter is cleaned (which I did) the code has to be cleared. I found a video that showed how to do that and cleared the code and now the dishwasher, including the pump that "needed" to be replaced for almost $400, is working perfectly. I honestly don't know if these guys are incompetent or fraudsters (likely both), but they charged me $49.95 for nothing and recommended a repair that was not necessary. I would have gladly paid the $49.95 if he had come out, checked the filter and cleared the code--at least he would have done something. I assume if they always replace the pump, that will also involve clearing the filter and resetting the codes--so replacing the pump always "works"--just like if your car was out of gas and the mechanic put in a new gas tank which he then filled with gas and the car ran again. "Every time we put in a new tank and fill it with gas, that seems to solve the problem." But this guy didn't seem to know anything or he likely would have reset the code in the least.
