If allowed technically, I would leave 0 star for this rink. Horrible experience with their freestyle session! Have been to many rinks in different states, this is the FIRST rink that allows learn to skate to run simultaneously with many advanced skaters. Just imagine an advanced skater doing jumps that could crush into those LTS little kids?! So, where is the safety? Ridiculously, the rink lady (Michelle) was very unmannered when seeing a professional skater wearing weights and bends entering into the rink just for a regular self practice. That lady shouted to the kid taking them off. If safety is indeed the priority for this rink, why do they even allow LTS kids learning the basics to skate at the same time with those advanced skaters??? Really absurd and bizarre!!! If you're looking for a freestyle expecting hassle free, then this is definitely NOT the rink you should go to!!! read more

I'm enrolled in their learn to skate program and attend the class every Saturday. The cost is very reasonable only $137 , which includes 6 half hour class + 6 free public, and it includes rental skates if you don't have your own. I usually just stay for the public skate after the class so I can practice on my own. The quality of the ice is good as well, and they have 2 rinks side by side - not many places have that! - way more professional than those open air temporarily ice rinks in NYC If you want to learn skating, this is the arena with the best price-performance ratio in the greater New York area :) read more

After a less than positive first experience, the second one was significantly better. The director called me after I emailed about the first experience, and she said she wanted my daughter to have a better experience before deciding on whether or not we would continue. She didn't want my daughter to have any bad feelings about skating or the rink. She offered to work one:one with my daughter at a quieter time, and it was amazing. Ms. Michelle was a perfect fit for my daughter, who couldn't help but have a good time. I also got to spend time talking with Deanna, the other director, who is also another lovely human. Large ice skating space and great fOr all ages! They have a beginners and or Youth area . They have free mini lessons during skating sessions in a designated area without interfering with regular skaters. The staff is friendly, the space is fabulous and the prices are reasonable. A bit further than I would prefer for me, but I do look forward to visiting again because the space really is pretty great in comparison to Bergen county. read more

I don't know where to begin! First I would like to say if I could give 10 stars I would!! I just had my step daughters 7th Birthday party here! The staff was phenomenal!! Kelsey was our host and she was perfect!! My main focus was Andrea! She put our whole party together! From time to character to food , decorations and cake! Everything was perfect! She was beyond understanding of our situation! She was not bothered by our 101 questions at all! Our party had over 15 kids and they all had a BLAST!!! Pretty decent ice rink, small. I noticed there is two of them but one was being used for practice I believe. The workers were all very nice. The hours however aren't convenient 12-4 and then 7:20-9:20 but I can understand since its a college. It's not just a ice rink for the public. They have small lockers if you need to put your shoes or bags while iceskating. You do need quarters in order to use them so I suggest you bring change. They also have a small area where they sell popcorn, corn dog, fries, beverages etc. and they take cards. For those first timers ice skating they do have the bar to help you balance but you do have to pay they're $4 but pretty good for the kids. I would probably only come here again if I was around for whatever reason. Otherwise I would rather go to another ice rink that is open full time and I don't have to worry about the time. read more

I am a professional figure skater, and I travel for competition a lot, so I like to go to rinks around me to see how they are. I do not do tricks at a higher level than a really fast backspin during public sessions, because it is dangerous, so I was not putting anyone in danger. When I first walked into the arena I thought it was really nice, big. The cashier I payed for tickets from was absolutely rude. She was perhaps having a bad day but there was no need to take it out on me! That was fine, I didnt mind. Next, on the ice, I put my belongings on a bench that many others had their on, and when I came back 10 mins later, all of my items were on the floor. The staff on the ice made a horrible attempt to flirt with me, and I am 16, while the staff was evidently over 18. I have an accent because English is definitely not my first language, and I was poked fun of by the same staff that asked me where my accent was from because it is "sexy." It is very unprofessional to call someone sexy at work. I left immediately after he would not leave me alone. I even tried putting my headphones on and he told me there was a no headphone policy. This trip was about three weeks ago so I apologize for forgetting the names of these staff, but I had a horrible experience and needed to share. Beware of the creepy staff man! read more

We were looking to buy a house in the area but were looking for a place close to an ice rink, and we called this place to ask about their schedule. The lady just kept repeating "we are not offering freestyles at this time" and would not say why or when or even if they will ever offer freestyles or if they ever did offer it or even to offer an apology for seemingly knowing 0 information about her own rink or honestly any information at all except to rudely repeat the same regurgitated line over and over. Very disappointed with my girls skating lessons. I have 7 year old twin girls who were interested in skating so we signed them up for lessons at Floyd Hall. We did 7 classes in the Pre Alpha skating class to see if the girls would like it. The instructor couldn't be less interested in the students and clearly was doing the bare minimum to get her paycheck. I could have taught the class better and I'm not a big skater. She just barked instructions at them and then sent them across the rink while she lounged against the wall or skated in front them. My girls, new to skating, were struggling a bit and falling all the time but the instructor rarely gave them tips or helped them in any way. The first class I actually asked someone just hanging out on the ice who the instructor was so I could tell them to go help one of my daughters who was face first on the ice and was shocked when she said, "I am." I spoke with the skating director (I was very pleasant and non confrontational) who listened but did nothing. I would have been better off just watching some youtube videos and teaching them myself. My daughters summed it up best when I asked her if the instructor was teaching them. She said, "she tells us what to do, but doesn't really teach us." Well said and pretty much sums up the experience. read more

Avoid this place if you actually want to skate .Way to many people on the ice to be safe .Clearly they just sell as many tickets as possible.No organization no designated enter/exit to the ice .Some lady barks at you if you do something against the unmarked rules.If you have little ones theyy will stiCk you in a section of ice 10'x15' with 30 other people . Locker rooms are huge, twin rinks have a nice feel to them. Beer league starting times are horribly unreasonably late. Also, games never start on time. It you have a 11:20PM sunday night start, and they dont start zomboning the ice until 11:25, cmon. And this is the norm. Too many late starts, always not starting on time. But I understand why, beer league is not the priority. I dont play here much anymore (other than subbing in earlier starting games, which rarely coincides) but I do miss playing here. AIL League is very fun to play in. read more

My son is a competitive ice dancer, and Floyd Hall is his home training rink. We drive an hour each way from Westchester just to skate the freestyle ice. Unlike many other rinks closer to us in Westchester, the sessions are very well managed and are never overbooked or overcrowded, which allows the kids to be able to fully use the ice and practice what they need to without getting frustrated. All the coaches are very friendly and supportive of each other and the kids all root for each other as well. It's a warm friendly environment in a sport where you don't typically find that kind of atmosphere. The learn to skate staff is made up of many of the same coaches who teach the high level freestyle and dancers, so you know you will be getting the best of the best for teaching your child to skate! There is also a learn to ice dance class that I highly recommend, as it is taught by my son's fabulous coaches, Igor Lukanin and Kristen Fraser. They have done wonders for my son! read more

I had Deana give my 6yr old Granddaughter a private lesson. She really puts her heart and soul into her teaching. She was very encouraging and made my granddaughter feel very comfortable during her lesson. I think Deana's great attribute is her love of skating which is evident in her patience and her love of passing on her knowledge of skating to her student. What can I say about Floyd Hall. They have everything from skating lessons to college Hockey. This is my home away from home. They have something for everyone especially when it comes to Hockey. They have two rinks and have Hockey programs for beginners to advance. The staff are very friendly and helpful. It can get pretty crazy here during the winter especially on sunday evenings. They have an arcade for kids and have a good summer program. Don't be surprise to run into one or two Devil players at this rink. The staff are also very friendly and helpful. I can review only the free skate nights, not skate lessons or hockey as I have not participated in those. Great mix of a family environment and youth scene since it is right on the Montclair State University campus. The rink itself is pretty good, just be careful of slightly bumped or melted areas over time. Bring quarters for the locker and keep in mind that every time you open the door, you have to re-pay the 50 cents. read more

Floyd Arena would be fine BUT I take issue with a few things: 1. During the public skate there is no place for the parents to sit and observe the rink while their kids are skating. You either have to stand for the 2 hours or leave the area. There are bleachers but I was told they don't leave them down because if someone goes on them with skates then they could wreck the blades. Well then, come up a solution! Put rubber on the part where you might step. There are small benches near the rink entry and exit point. Not sufficient for the crowd and spectators. Plus you can't see the rink when you are sitting there. 2. The staff are inconsistent with the application of rules and if you are "reprimanded" for not following a rule THAT IS NOT POSTED anywhere they come at you like an attack dog. Honestly, 2 weeks ago 6 or 7 people used the side door to speak to their child or help their child off the rink. When I used it I was attacked by one of the ice skating instructors. Then 5 minutes later every other parent was doing it again and she didn't say a word. Every week people are using those doors and it is hardly ever addressed. 3. When you take lessons for the first time NO ONE gives you instructions on where to go. You are left to blindly figure it out and again if you don't know the rules (because no one tells you ANYTHING) be prepared to be yelled out or rudely addressed. 50% of the staff behave this way. The other 50% are friendly and helpful. read more

I remember the first time I took skating lessons here. I was still a kid and was terrified of ice. I fell so many times my bum was hurting by the end of each practice lesson. But the staff were always wonderful. They really cared about the students and it was also fun seeing the more experienced skaters float effortlessly around the rink. I had hoped that someday I would be able to do the same. Sadly I couldn't continue on that path. But I never forgot how great this place was. It seems so long ago that I had strapped on a pair of skates and glided on the ice. But I had the opportunity to do so recently. Without fail I landed on that ice so many times that my bum was very sore at the end of the session. My girl was laughing and enjoying every minute of it. Floyd Hall is still fun as ever (even though my bum doesn't think so). read more

Pretty decent ice rink. I took my four-year-old for the Tot 1 Program - Learn to Skate. The instructors ranged from okay to pretty good. My son used the bar/walker thing for a few lessons so he had something to lean on. Then they eventually took it away so he could skate on his own. Overall for the price I was happy; everyone was very friendly and I would recommend it for those parents who are looking for inexpensive skating lessons. Just a tip...it's cold year round so dress yourself and your kids appropriately for the temperature...even in July! read more

this is a very good facility, with an excellent staff. the instructors know their craft and the ice is always in very good condition. management is solid, professional and friendly. the rinks are busy which is always a good sign. one thing that could be managed better, and it is probably not the fault of the rink or the management, is that too many kids teams show up way too early for their games. nowadays, that includes the kids, the parents, the grandparents et al. the large number of "wannabe coach" parents and grandparents milling around and clogging the lobby 3 hours before their kids' game detracts from the experience for the people using the rinks before the games. read more

HORRIBLE STAFF! When a child would fall strangers would help them get back up bc the people who were supposed to supervising were too busy. They weren't doing their jobs and were using their time to have fun with each other instead of watching the people on the ice. read more

Best place to play adult hockey as the staff is friendly, you can drink beer after game without being hassled and you can even BBQ in the parking lot. Just be respectful and clean up. The leagues are also balanced and the refs competent. The rules are also fair but not overbearing. Showers are pretty good and for a rink pretty clean too. Spectators have seating in either rink or can go upstairs and watch through glass at room temperature. They have some vending machines and a concession during the day and for High School or College games. They also have a decent pro shop but check the hours. Parking is good and location great on the campus of Montclair State University. read more

The ice class has an amazing instructor. He always makes sure to split up the time evenly with the students. The class allows for students to have free public sessions which is a hue plus. I will continue going here because with the amount of instruction and tips, the lessons will continue to be more effective. read more

I love this arena the staff is amazing and they helped me so much excel. The only issue would be the managers, I feel as if they are involved in what is going on at the arena, but I didn't really get that much help from them when asking about the learn to skate programs and private lessons. With that said I would love to go back I just hope I get a little more help and information about some of the programs next time. read more

Experience not so great with Learn to Skate and general sessions - some of the staff is nice, but management is unpleasant and they don't train new staff (often college students) very well. It's really hard to get answers to questions because most of the time, the employees haven't been trained to know how to help you and after awhile, they just don't care. You can end up wasting half your time trying to pay and get organized because they don't know what they are doing. The rink also changes schedules a lot without letting you know, so you go and there is no session or they are cutting the ice really late and the session is short - but you still pay the same. read more
