After seeing the lovely rooms at the Montecito Inn on their website and other hotel sites, it was so depressing to walk into a hotel room my husband and I thought would be an inviting respite after a 7 hour drive., especially when we were paying $300 a night for the minimum of amenities. No view, except of the roof over the parking garage, a queen bed, and a bathroom with no place to set our overnight bag, except the toilet with the lid down. I was told by the front desk this was an upgrade, since prior to our arrival I had asked on the phone if we would be in a nice room.
Already late and in a hurry for our dinner engagement after check in, we rushed to change and when I looked down at the floor, the threadbare and stained carpet was a shock to say the least. This was a rug I would not let my bare feet touch, trying to hop over stains of varying color, some looking like blood spots and others a variety of who knows what. After 10 minutes, I called the front desk and was told the hotel was currently upgrading the furnishings....unfortunately I was not in time to experience that luxury. She told me I would receive a 10% courtesy refund, but I didn't think she believed me about the carpet, because after all, "the housekeeping staff would not have left it in that state." The furniture was not "shabby chic" or "distressed", it was plain old scratched, and the smell of the overall room was old and musty. Before we left I showed her the photos, because I didn't want her to think I was exaggerating.
On the way back from dinner I told my friends and husband that I dreaded going back to the room. Four other parties in our group, staying at Santa Barbara hotels were made fully aware of our dissatisfaction and saw the photos. They made a mental note to never stay at this hotel.
I was offered a different, "smaller" room, however, for a 36 hour stay with many activities packed into those hours, the last thing we wanted to do was to begin a tour of another room and move our belongings, even though it would be done for us. This isn't our idea of a pleasant stay. From the look of the vehicles parked in the garage, it would not appear this room would be satisfactory or acceptable to those guests, so either they are not as picky, or, they are getting a much better room.
We could not leave fast enough Sunday morning and when I looked over the bill on the way home, I saw the 10% adjustment wasn't even for both nights. Yes, the staff was courteous enough, however, nothing could make up for the garish colored stained carpet, shredded at the bathroom tile threshold, and the furniture I felt I needed to cover with a towel before I sat on it.
We understand this is an expensive community and hotel prices reflect that. However, this price was not acceptable and exorbitant in comparison to the room we were given and I feel a significant adjustment should be made. Disclosures should also be given to all guests who reserve these rooms so they may quantify as to whether this is acceptable. We were not, and the photos on the website were quite misleading when it comes to "our" room. read more
