This place has its pros and cons just like people. I currently call this place home. I have made contact with lingering " energies " and they have been somewhat friendly. We have come to an agreement and understanding that my number 1 rule is absolutely no possession of my body is allowed. Quickest way to reference my stay would be to say, "check out other reviews of this place...those rating less than three stars are pretty accurate." That's not to say the staff weren't nice...because they were. Street parking only and the area is questionable looking...like bars on windows. Luckily I didn't run into any problems in that area. No room deposit is required to check into this Historic hotel that's run by an amicable and customer focused lady. She gave me a fascinating history of the building and got me a spacious room with 2 beds, an overhead rotating fan, raised bar stools, 43 inch insignia TV, study desk with chair, a full kitchen with cooking oven, microwave, fridge freezer, utensil cupboards and dining table. The place was also quiet and I slept like a baby! They also provide free grab to go breakfast that consists of oranges, chocolate brownies, small pack of onion rings in the main lobby. Only downsides of staying here are the front desk hours are from 7am to 8pm so if you checking in late you may have some issues. They also issue traditional room keys as opposed to digital room keys. Also No WiFi, No swimming pool. Also when I checked in the TV in my room had no signal so I had to fiddle around with the TV receiver box to get it working. Finally be careful with some guests here as some random lady was knocking on my room door at morning hours saying she forgot something in the room from her previous stay so I had to let her in to retrieve whatever it is she had left behind from her previous stay. read more

we stayed here last friday 9/13 for just one night because we attended a concert in Los Angeles at the greek theatre. we needed a budget place to stay since the rest of our trip was headed up north to San Francisco & Oregon & the time in LA was so minimal. I booked this place clear back in May through google. it's not a horrible place to stay but i think there's three big things that anyone who wants to stay here should know/consider before booking: 1. the door is locked at all times. someone will answer it for you but only between the hours of 3:00- 11:00 pm. they do NOT say this online, it was on the sheet they had me sign upon check in. after you check in, they give you your room keys & a key to the front door so you could get in at all hours, but if you're checking in past 11:00 pm, they all go to bed & no one will check you in. I saw some reviews on google saying that people with reservations & paid already couldn't get in & had to go somewhere else in the middle of the night, so please plan accordingly! 2. even though you pay when you book, they still make you pay a $100 deposit with a credit card when you check in & will keep it if you cause any damage to your room. they also do not advertise this online & I was met with surprise when I checked in. thank god that they voided it like they said they would. however i do understand that $100 is a lot for some people & they may not have it when checking in- so just a heads up. 3. there is NO parking lot of any kind. there's two streets in front of the hotel where you're allowed to park that they claim is okay with the city- however those spots obviously fill up fast. we came back late after our concert & of course our good spot right out front was taken by then. we spent 2 hours driving though some sketchy parts trying to find signs that said we could park. we eventually found a spot a few streets away & parked between 2-8 am. at 8 we moved our car back in front of the hotel when a spot was freed. thank god we didn't get towed & nobody broke into/stole our car. the area is pretty sketchy. there's a shit ton of homeless people that stay on the streets surrounding the entire area- it's definitely not a safe place for children or solo female travelers. my husband had to come outside with me every time. the staff as pretty nice & the room was clean. bed was small & not super comfy but that was to be expected. there was a little kitchenette & a tv that didn't work. no carpet which was nice & more sanitary. room was really hot & stuffy & there was only one crappy ceiling fan so we slept without blankets to beat the heat. it's only worth staying for one night- i definitely don't recommend a longer stay than that! but the $50 i paid wasn't too shabby at all! read more

This place gets a totally unfair rap on here. It's a charming old building (lovingly refurbished) in a quiet, industrial area. You won't be basking in luxurious accommodations or surrounded by raucous night life here, but you can't find any better place at this price!!! I'll start off with my few - minor - complaints before continuing my praise: - No parking lot (but, we had zero trouble finding close street parking) - Slightly creaky bed (with major movements, like getting out of it - not bad if you're just turning over) - Shower is fine for a basic job, but don't try to shave your legs in it if you don't like a wet shower curtain sealed to your butt cheek - You can hear trains in the distance, if that bothers you (personally, I'm fine with it) Here's what we DID get (for only $45/night!!!): - Kitchenette with stove, sink, minifridge, microwave, and cabinet/drawer space - Roomy bathroom - Linens & toiletries aplenty - Modest continental breakfast - Communal deck with several tables and chairs, and a charcoal grill - Friendly staff - Cable TV & wifi - Wall unit A/C - A noted LACK of bedbugs - Never felt like we were gonna get stabbed! There were a couple of skeevy homeless people wandering around the neighborhood - one who seems to keep several vehicles perpetually parked on the street that appear to serve as storage units - but nobody messed with our car or with us. (We live in East Hollywood, so that situation was actually an improvement upon what we're used to.) There are several businesses within two blocks, including a bar, a liquor store with some grocery items, and a very strange antique shop which amused us. We were quite pleasantly surprised by how nice this place was - I'm going to try to do some research on its history, because I'm pretty sure it must have some great stories of dockworkers boarding there in decades past! We originally planned on staying for 6 nights but left after the third because the room was simply inhospitable. Upon arrival we found a lot of loose hairs in our bed, sheets, and shower. The following day, we discovered bedbugs and dried blood directly on our sheets & pillowcase. We notified the front desk, who insisted that we had cockroaches, not bedbugs so apparently they have both. We asked for a partial refund but was rejected, even after notifying them about the blood and bedbugs. What a joke. I booked this hotel and canceled the booking literally minutes after doing so. They still charged me $89. And this was many days before I was coming to stay. Horrible horrible horrible. Room smelly and stuffy. Closet smells horrible like moldy stuffy pee. Air conditioning spit water at me told it was normal and would stop in a few minutes. It didn't. Was told they would have it fixed at 9 am it wasn't. Went back and asked said it would be fixed at 3pm we went out for the day came back at 8pm still was not fixed talked to front desk. They said nothing they could or would do about it asked to speak to the manager and was told no they weren't available. She then closed the window on me. Absolutely ridiculous. One of the customers of the place let us in. But there was nobody in the office and even no number to call except one, where nobody answers the call. Next day when I called them they told me so many different lies. One was about if we would ring a door then the clerk would let us in! But there was NOBODY! They told me that they called my cell phone, but I have got no calls and no voice messages. After all, they said that I will get the refund, but I never got one. I CAN'T RECOMMEND PLACE LIKE THIS. First when I got dropped off, the area didn't seem as safe as I would've liked. We couldn't walk in because it was locked, we had to ring the doorbell three times before someone opened the door. When we checked in the lady wasn't very pleasant or helpful, she just gave us a paper with WiFi info, told us our room number and threw the tv remote and keys on the counter. Our room was downstairs, when we walked into the room the first thing I saw was a shower completely separated from the bathroom and only covered with a curtain, the bed made a lot of noise, I didn't get any service down there and out of the 6 different WiFi names and passwords they gave us none of them worked. I love it here. The rooms are clean. The furniture is old, but still is fine. The floors are nice, porcelin tile. The walls are clean and freshly painted. There are ceiling fans in the kitchenette as well as the main room/bedroom. There is a small wall heater in the wall, that looks brand new. Staff is extremely friendly and helpful. We arrived late from out of town and were very tired from the long drive. All I wanted to to was sleep. We did the self check in because staff left at 8 pm and we arrived a little after they had left. Once we opened the door and flicked on the lights the roaches scattered across the floor. My husband stomped most of them out and I was horrified. We took our bags back outside to try a plan B but no success finding anything on Labor Day weekend. I put towels down on the dirty bedding and slept with the lights on to keep the rest of the family of roaches from visiting at night. We put whatever belongings we had in plastic bags to keep the roaches out and tried to get some rest. People walked around and argued all night. Worst nights sleep I've gotten in a long time and I will do much more research before I ever make this mistake again. I called and left messages on the numbers I had. Ended up paying for another hotel. Called and spoke to Vinnie to try to get a refund. He just telling me I was a no show. This hotel was bundled into a flight that I had booked for a friend, who wanted to be on the same flight I had booked earlier in the month. I was not given a choice of hotels. When I got there, I could see why! I arrived at 8 P.M. and the place was locked up tight. It was in a seedy neighborhood, and the parking for the motel was on the street! Certainly not in a safe place! When the clerk came to open the door, I told her I wanted to see the room. It was up two flights of rickety stairs, and all three of us are disabled in some way. My boyfriend and i stayed here lastnight. Being a fan of everything old and vintage i loved it. The building is over 150 years old. So its a bit quirky. Decore is old. It smells old. Like a vintage store. The staff and residents were nice. Only fourty for one night. The room was clean. Lots of little noises and sreeks here and there that you expect with an old place. Freash paint. Clean linins. Someone who works there knows how to sew because the blanket was hand stitched. Very comfy. Pillows were old and bromen in. Just how i like them. The boyfriend and i took advantage of the old decore and did a black and white photo shoot. Super fun! As far as location its on the outskirts of the old part of wilmington. Driving down avalon twards the 405 looks like it hasnt been upgraded since the fifties. Not for the faint of heart. But if you dont mind ghetto fabelous and can appriceate the little things its awesome. Gotstopped by a cop while waiting in my car outside for having a temp tag. Cop was super nice. I have read a couple of the reviews that give this place 3 or 4 stars, and I can only conclude that they must have been written by close relatives, pathological liars, or both. The hotel is in a filthy neighborhood--place is tough to find, badly lit, small signage--friendly staf poked his head out the window and without further inquiry, happily informed me they were booked--took awhile to get him to understand that I had booked online. Once I was checked in, staff let me know there is no secured parking, but street parking is "safe" because Homeland Security has an office next door. Yikes. Got to the room--OH MY GAWD!!!!! I am not remotely fussy--I have stayed in some real sh*tholes in my day, both in the US and in Mexico--this one easily ranks in the top five worst of all time. The door is a HANDLE lock--a flimsy one at that--no deadbolt, no latch. The room is 8'x15', with a single 18" window in the kitchen about 7' above floor level. Forget A/C--two ceiling fans sort of circulated the hot air. Grime pretty much everywhere except the bathroom, which actually appeared to have been remodeled sometime since the war ended in Vietnam. The rest of the room certainly has not been. Despite my best efforts, the shower leaked all over the floor, and the toilet is too close to the wall, so you have to sit sideways to do your business. The only light switch is near the door, so you have to trip about 10' in the pitch black to get into the bed. Hallway noisy all night--my neighbors sounded like they were in the bed next to me. I have no idea what kind of a rendering or manufacturing plant they have next door, but about 1:30 A.M. I was blown out of bed by some kind of steam whistle--I swore the North Koreans were invading--left me shaking and jittery the remainder of my short night. This place has all the comfort and charm of your average jail cell, but at least without the happy jail mate. Stay in your car--break an arm and stay in the emergency room--get arrested and spend the night in a jail cell--whatever you do, DO NOT STAY IN THIS CR*PHOLE. read more

Terrible place, owned by inept and terrible people. I came in to town the day before Mother's Day, with a reservation I'd booked 3 weeks prior through Trip Advisor. I got in late, around 10 pm, and was met at the door by a woman, the owner of the hotel I presume. She walked us in to the front desk, seemingly shocked that I had a reservation, saying "this happens all the time with trip advisor, they charge tou, but never send us the reservation". I showed her both my credit card statement and my confirmation number and she apologized saying "we just don't have any room". Her husband and son were there, shrugging their shoulders and apologizing and reiterating how this always happens with trip advisor. Her son even said "can't we pull the bed from upstairs?" To which the Dad replied no. When asked what I should do to proceed, I was advised to dispute the charges with my credit card company and find another place. I did that. My credit card company returned the charges and I went about my business. However, two days ago I received notice that the charges are BACK on my cars because the HOTEL IS not willing to drop the charges because they've noted that I was a no show! A no show for the reservation they told me they didn't have. I have called the hotel TWICE in those two days for resolution. The first time leaving a voicemail that went Un-returned. The second time, speaking with an Employee who promised to research the issue and call me back...still waiting. I am livid and 100% will NOT pay these people a dime, for the trouble they caused me. If you find yourself in the area, I'd avoid this place at all costs. There's a Rodeway Inn near by, where I ended up staying and being treated wonderfully by the staff, who even gave me a discount on the rate because of the situation I'd been put in. read more

More than hatred this place deserves 0 Stars or negative Stars. Staff was unfriendly and uncooperative they messed up my reservation and made me pay more for it. When I was trying to get it resolved through the travel agency (Agoda) I used they call the hotel to resolve the issue but the hotel continually hung up with them to the point the travel agency had to use me as the communication between them and the hotel continued to be uncooperative. There was no notification and either email or anywhere that there is $100 deposit needed (credit card or cash only) upon check-in. The stove keep trying to light itself by clicking and they said that was normal when I brought it up to them. They were closed New Year's Day and I had to call the number 4 times before they could check me out I strongly recommend not staying here pay the extra and stay somewhere decent it was only slightly better than stay on the street. When taking a shower water was fluctuating in temperature when I wasn't turning the knobs and no power in the in the sink which by the way is right next to where I was supposed to sleep like less than two inches away from my head very tacky if you ask me. There were rips in the curtains and you could hear everything through the walls. The complimentary breakfast is disgusting what looked like week old muffins and donuts. So it wasn't what I thought it was going to be, but I will say it is the cheapest & best value in the area. Merchant Mariners this is the spot for you! It was more of European Hostel than hotel. Cons-No cleaning service, cheap ikea or cheaper furniture, if you want fresh towels & linen bring your old ones to the front desk, old box tv with basic Dtv channels, poor lighting & my room smelled funny. Sketchy area, lots of junkies & homeless, a 5 block walk to the strip. The breakfast is pitiful & often late (9am) but all day pot of coffee. My biggest complaint was no AC, which forced me to open the window with no screen which led to the biting gnats. I would open my room door, turn on the ceiling fan & window to get a cool draft, otherwise it was too hot. But then there was those damn bugs! Pros- Outdoor lounge & deck, decent Wifi, cheapest washing machines, exceptionally nice & helpful staff, working stove, microwave, fridge, strong & hot shower pressure, cozy, quiet around the hotel, right in between Long Beach & San Pedro, the PRICE!! I payed a lot more for 2 days at a shitty hotel up the block. On Agoda.com I was able to book 1 week for $260-280 depending on in advance you book, I assume maybe cheaper if you book real early. The Monterey Inn certainly isn't for everyone but for those who have crashed at youth hostels you should feel right at home. The room was very clean and extremely quiet. The place is in a deserted area next to the Port, so there is NOTHING going on in the neighborhood. If your goal is sight seeing around L.A. and you just need a place to rest your head, this is perfect. Great freeway access, yes, the bathroom is small but the room had an A/C unit that worked great and a functional kitchen. A great deal for the price. There is an odd smell in the place though. Me and my husband booked 2 nights here. We left 20 minutes after we got there. It looked nothing like the pictures! First we had to park on the street which the neighborhood looked sketchy! You have to ring a doorbell and wait until they wanna let you in. The room was really small. There was a very strong smell of cleaner which started giving me a headache. What made us to make out final decision was the door only had a cheap lock. There was a chain but they had removed the part the chain goes into. Also there was a deadbolt but it didn't work. My husband went and told him we would not be staying the guy asked why and my husband was honest. First, let me say that I must give credit where credit is due. The room in which I stayed appeared to have been upgraded and was clean. The manager, or I assumed she was the manager, did try to give me the best service she was able, given the circumstances. What circumstances? The TV remote didn't work, and I had to eventually use one to turn on the TV and another to change the channels. Yes, they have a kitchenette, but the stove is turned off, there are no pots or pans, dishes or silverware, the water from the tap tastes of algae and the bar refrigerator hardly works. There is no phone, no alarm clock, one key operates the top lock, and another operates the dead bolt. Really? Sorry, in the 24 hours I was there, hot water was absent. Oh, did I mention that they must keep the front door locked 24/7. When I rang the bell, the manager finally opened the door and she was bare foot. That should have been my second clue. The first being the sketchy area with only street parking. Now for the price, about $60 it was sufficient, but you have ever heard of buyer's remorse? This was cheap skate remorse, on my part. "No frills" is one way to put it... Currently staying for 4 nights. On the first night, we peeled back about 5 layers of sheets on the bed to discover a bloody plastic mattress cover. Unclear whether the sheets underneath were cleaned or if they simply placed a clean sheet over the dirty one. Found a bed bug on the bed the second night. Spring mattress is very old and uncomfortable.TV displayed purple contrast. Fairly noisy. Unpleasant odor to the room despite purchasing an air freshener. Not too upset with the size of the room because of the price but cleanliness of a room should be standard regardless of price. Free wifi is nice. Bathroom and kitchen appeared to have been cleaned. Haven't had much interaction with the staff but I can't say they were rude or friendly, fairly indifferent. Will be requesting new linens and a new plastic cover in the morning and will report how the staff are. All in all, very disappointed. read more

When we decided to turn on the tv it didn't work, it had static so we decided to use our phones to watch netflix but the internet didn't work either. This place is very clean. There are NO BEDBUGS or bugs of any kind...and I looked for them because of a previous review. The staff is very courteous and friendly and the both the other guests and neighborhood is very quiet. It's in an industrial area (right next to the Port of Los Angeles with all of the container ships), so there are no criminals or transients prowling the streets (because there are no tourists, other than the few guests at this Inn, to beg from or residences to burglarize). A continental breakfast is provided and it was very much appreciated. Also, the Inn is conveniently located near freeway access to all points and I got everywhere quickly and easily (I visited downtown Los Angeles, Hollywood, Beverly Hills, West LA, Santa Monica, Venice Beach, Marina Del Rey, Long Beach, and Belmont Shore). read more

We were going to stay at a different inn for the last part of our trip but since they were so nice we decided to just stay there. We got a single room. It had a walk in closet, a bed, a little dresser,a chair, a sink and a tv. Then there was a little step up and there was a sink, microwave, a mini fridge and an oven (which was great cause we were able to make our own fod so we didn't have to go out to eat every night). It was a little weird the bathroom was in the kitchen. there was a toilet and a door and then a shower with a curtain right next to it. Could be that other rooms were set up differently. This is a very unusual hotel at the very end of Avalon Street. It has that very edge of town feeling my room was huge and beautiful!

My partner and I were looking for an inexpensive hotel to stay at for a couple of nights. We thought we hit the jackpot when we found the Monterey Inn with a rate of only $29.99 a night. We were exhausted on the night of our check-in and couldnt wait to go to bed. When we arrived to the hotel, we were appalled by the grimy exterior of the hotel. It was in an industrial area that looked very sketchy. We were greeted by a friendly staff member who checked us in. As I was waiting for him to fill out the paperwork, I looked around the office and saw a long list of people to not rent rooms to posted on the wall. It made me feel as though I was watching America's Most Wanted. The staff member not only gave us a key, but also a roll of toilet paper because apparently, they had run out when they "cleaned" the room. The lobby seemed pretty okay (felt like I was in an antique museum) but as we went up the stairs, which were lopsided and made me feel very unsafe in the case of an earthquake, we realized what we were in for. We walked to the end of a hallway and opened our rickety door. We were met with a very unpleasant stench that reeked of 10,000 putrid corpses. On top of that, it was freezing and the heater the size of a shoebox was broken. The furniture in the room appeared to be 70 years old and as stiff as wood. The king-size bed did not look comfortable whatsoever and we were afraid to even sit on it for fear of bed bugs or other critters. We were very cautious to not touch anything in the room, but luckily we slept in our own sleeping bags, cringing whenever accidentally touching even the slightest piece of comforter. We had some trouble finding the bathroom, as it appeared to be a closet at first (it was very small) and although we really needed to shower, we opted not to for fear of contracting an exotic fungi. Sleeping in the bed, we felt itchy all over, which I doubt was my imagination alone. As we attempted to sleep, we suddenly heard loud shouting, almost as if we were in the same room with these people arguing. At that point, we honestly feared for our safety. That was the last straw, although we had planned to originally stay for two nights, we researched on our handy iPhones other hotels where we could stay at the following night. The affordable price of the Monterey Inn was not worth our safety. We soon fell asleep, eager to wake up the next morning and flee. The only silver lining to our horrible experience was the wide selection of pornographic channels, which kept our minds off of things by providing countless laughs. The following night we stayed a different hotel, albeit a bit more expensive, it offered everything that the Monterey Inn failed to do so...most importantly, we felt safe and comfortable there. read more
