Good Mexican restaurant in the heart of Newark, NY. The chips, salsa, and service were great. Stars off as it was quiet on a Sunday afternoon and my party of 5 was seated at a dirty table that wasn't wiped down. The menus also are very dirty and need to be wiped down. My friends all enjoyed their meals. I had the taco salad with beef and it ended up being more like meat soup. It wasn't within my tastebuds desire but my friends all had great meals- especially my friend that had the shrimp fajitas. Food was about what I expected - not amazing but not bad. I ordered beef tacos and they were fine. The rice was a little plain but tasted okay when combined with the beans. We went at lunch time on a Thursday and had very quick service. Our food was brought to the table within a few minutes of ordering and it was warm and fresh. read more

So we went there May 5th and had to wait to be seated. It was busy so didnt mind. The manager of the place, female, was so unorganized that she was being very unprofessional in front of her staff and customers. Got seated and I ordered a medium House Margarita and my partner order the Ultimate Margarita. Well, they brought us those drinks in huge, tall plastic cups and they were large which wasnt what we ordered. Then, we sat there waiting for someone to take our order. All of the servers are very hard to understand. Finally got our food, which was good, but then we had the long wait again for containers and our bill. OH, the BILL! We ordered 2 menu items, a 15.99 and a 13.99 plus the 2 Margaritas and it came to 73.40! WHAT? That made those 2 drinks be like 20 a piece. I reached out to this restaurant to ask what the price of those drinks were that night and they only asked if I had the receipt. They have refused to tell me the price. Despite arriving just after 5 pm on a Friday night, there was already a queue of people waiting to be seated. They were clearly understaffed and sometimes only seated 1 table every 10 minutes. A fair number of people left (having completed their meals) and at times the pace of seating went up a bit. Once we got seated we ordered and our food actually came out VERY quickly. The food was ok but absolutely nothing special. The salsa was very bland and nothing on my Bandera plate had much spice to it. Still, overall it was adequate food but it took a long time to get seated and quite a while to get our ticket to pay for our food. We ordered the queso and quac apps. This is what we received. These are not apps, they are tiny sizes. We received one tiny bag of chips to share across both. This cost $14.98. Not worth it AT ALL! These are no appetizers, they're a side or add on that should cost way less. I ordered the verde quesadilla that is supposed to be topped with verde sauce. As you can see there is barely any on it. Our road trip also included a dinner stop at Monterey Mexican. Let me stay I did not have much Mexican food experience in Louisiana before I moved to Arizona. But now I'm a bit of a Mexican Food SNOB. So I was a little hesitant to try a Mexican place in New York.... But my husband needed a TACO in his life that day and so we stopped in at Monterey's for dinner. First off if you are visiting the Palmyra - Manchester - Newark area and are from the Utah - Arizona - Idaho area YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!!!! The manager sold me on the current special of the Pinapple Fajitas which included chicken, steak, shrimp, and chorizo (or as they called it Mexican Sausage). It was served in a pineapple! It was off the hook amazing!!! We also got a serving of white queso cheese dip which was so good and was given to us on the house. The salsa was made fresh which you could totally taste and tell. Everything was fresh and brought out hot! My husband got a combo plate with a taco, enchilada and a chalupa. He cleaned the plate and could have had more. It was great food and reasonablly priced. Decent, good chips and salsa gratis. The menu says vegetarian burrito option potato or spinach I ordered potato and spinach and it came out just spinach. The chicken enchilada was straight chicken and could have used a little flavor or additional anything. The relleno was large, well stuffed with cheese and pretty much seeded. Stopped in for lunch as we were driving through. It's a cute Mexican joint, typically decorated with Mexican flair and colors. The waitress was very nice and service was fast. The chips and salsa were on our table within minutes and were served warm and were fresh! The salsa was thin but good with a touch of kick. Our food was also very delicious- they had tamales on the menu which a lot of places don't anymore. These were really good!! The pork was tender and well seasoned. I also had a chicken enchilada which was moist and also yummy. The beans and rice were good as well- not over fried or under seasoned, just right! I have visited during pandemic, only for take out. They served to go from an out door window. I am changing my review to reflect the Mexican restaurants I have found to compare my experience. We travel to canadaguia for Mexican. Very food food, but again not the best service. This is still worth the drive. The one I visit at least once a week is in Penfield. Love the food and love the service. Even though there is a Mexican restaurant in Newark, like 10 minutes away, I still go to Penfield. They still have hot sauce to offer!! Enjoy read more

My husband and I stopped by this restaurant for a quick bite to eat at 4:30 in the afternoon on a weekday. It was very clean and just slightly busy. We were seated immediately by a very friendly hostess. Within a minute our waitress showed up with a bowl of salsa and fresh chips. They were excellent. The service was on point and the food was delicious. I ordered the four enchiladas and my husband ordered the deluxe burrito; both of them came piping hot just within a handful of minutes. Their soda drinks come in large cups, we'd say approx 20 - 25 ounces. We did notice that they also offer a small menu of vegetarian choices of which I will post a picture here. I ordered the carnitas platter and it was so tender it was falling apart. My other daughters ordered the carne asada platter, the chicken (pollo) platter and the steak quesadilla and all were just as good as the next. I would say this food is average. Food didn't taste particularly awful or very good and didn't seem very fresh. It was a bit cold in the place. This quickly became my #1 Mexican spot. I'd recommend the travel from Rochester, even if it is a drive. The queso fundido, an appetizer, would be worth going there alone for. It is a tasty queso with chorizo, I think, mixed in. Holy hell is it good. It is very fun for my stomach. I had standard tacos. Everything was great about the food. The soft tacos, lettuce, cheese and meat all seemed of great quality. Stopped in to meet a friend from out of town, and stayed for the environment and food! The place has an amazing staff, fantastic food, and a great bar. We had a large party and they handled it without blinking. We never waited for anything... food came out steaming hot and amazing. We had one slight issue and it was fixed immediately. The server... believe it was manager or owner but either way she was fantastic. Her sense of humor fit right with ours and it made our visit even better. The drinks are quite good and sizes as I ordered a medium margarita and it was in a 32 ounce glass. Monterrey Mexican Restaurant has recently opened (with some minor interior redecorating and an updated menu) in the former location of D's South of the Border. My family enjoyed dinner there, and was favorably impressed. The speedy service and food are of the same quality as before, and we appreciate the changes to the menu, which offers a wider variety of creative spins on traditional Mexican cuisine than before. We had to special-order one item to work around a food allergy, and the kitchen was very accommodating. We're so happy to have a good Mexican restaurant in town again! read more

Just wanted to give a heads-up to other vegetarians - I was informed by one of the servers who is vegetarian that the rice here is cooked using a chicken broth (note to restaurant - you should let people know this caveat if the rice is listed on the vegetarian menu!!). Additionally, we were told by a different waitress at a different visit that the margaritas are pre-made in a large batch using the mix, and if you order up with a nicer tequila, all they do is throw a shot of the more expensive tequila in with the cheap pre-made mix. WTF. The wait staff is hit-or-miss lately. The waitresses they had at the re-opening were 100% always on ... lately I have had a few interactions with one in particular who is slow and seems confused. We were in town for an event this week and stopped in for lunch because of the positive reviews on yelp. I'm so glad we did! The service was friendly and fast, the chips and salsa were tasty, and the food was spectacular! I ordered the burritos (first item on the menu). The portions are generous. Met up with friends in July while 'home' in Newark visiting from Orlando. Let me tell ya. The staff. Simply awesome. Super attentive but not in the annoying way. The owner...Absolutely fabulous. Drinks were spot on at the bar. Salsa and chips so fresh and delicious. The food out speedy and for our decent sized group I can honestly say the only complaint to my knowledge in the whole group was me...I was bummed that my eggs were overcooked on my huevos rancheros. Boss lady was like oh no. Not ok... she herself cooked the replacement. Best cooked one I've EVER had...and it's my go-to dish whether in NY or across central and east coast Florida. She was attentive and funny and my whole group just had a great time and deemed this our new meet place when I'm home! Side note: Great prices on food AND bar. Place was clean. Glasses hanging above the bar sparkled. Bright decor. Clean restrooms. Uniforms of staff were professional as well. Thank you for such a great time Monterrey Mexican Restaurant! Its important to note that out of so many times I could have written a review but haven't, that I'm creating a Yelp specifically because of how much this guy annoyed me. Order the exact same dinner everytime since they've been open. A steak fajita quesadilla dinner and a chicken fajita quesadilla dinner. On the phone the guy asks do I want just the quesadillas or the dinner? I say the dinner. He asks do I want everything on it. I say yes everything on it. As in rice, beans, guacamole, sour cream in a hard shell on the side of a vegetable with said meat filled quesadilla. ..pick it up and got one chicken fajita quesadilla with everything but the hard shell fine whatever. The steak fajita quesadilla shows up as a " cheese steak quesadilla" no veg. No hard shell no guac, sour cream, etc. My mom was picking this up so she goes back in and asks them what's going on with the order. The guy says he took the order the order is correct i didnt order the steak fajita quesadilla and I didnt order the dinner. Um ok. So would've been cool to not bullshit my mom because I wasnt with her and just be like ooops they must have misheard the order not a big deal. But nope couldn't just say he messed it up had to be a jerk about it...also just opened my chicken fajita quesadilla and it looks like you messed that one up to because there are no vegetables just cheese. In general the food is always great which is why we keep ordering the same STEAK FAJITA QUESADILLA DINNER and CHICKEN FAJITA QUESADILLA DINNER everytime. But shame in the YOU man that took my order and lied to my mom. YOU ARE A GROWN MAN take some responsibility it's a fricken quesadilla the world doesnt end if you have to admit you messed up and have to make a new one. 5stars for food and everybody else that works there.
