Cahleigh, for the first time ever, was able to make our time out of town, completely relaxing. She came over to meet the kids about a week before we were going to leave, she spent about an hour getting the routines written down, she had an actual clipboard with a set of questions, that enabled her to make sure all needs were met. Her rates for overnight stays were completely reasonable, and honestly, with the amount of care given to our animals, she could justifiably charge much more. She sent updates, with pictures, several times a day, made sure we knew everything that had been going on from the moment we left town, to the moment she arrived at our place to take care of our family. She's nothing but professional, and even put our bed sheets in the washer, and washed out the dogs food and water bowls before leaving. She's absolutely magnificent with animals, and I know for a fact, we'll be asking her to come back again the next time we leave town.

About that time, Fluffy started pawing at her front door. We plopped her in two-year-old Avery's lap in his car seat where she rode home without stirring. Our barely verbal toddler christened her Fluffy and she was immediately family. She endured aggressive baby hands, our frisky little dog, and a penchant for getting lost in dark spaces with her characteristic, lifelong calm. She once went missing for nine days and April and I were sure she was gone, but Avery announced, unsurprised, "Fluffy's back" when he saw her trotting down our road, leaving no doubt about where her home was. A neighbor later told us that a beautiful grey cat had streaked out of his garage when he had returned from vacation. When she did not appear immediately upon any of our arrivals home, we always knew to check our crawl spaces, closets and sheds. As much as she liked people, she also really liked dark corners. I like to think that makes her a complex soul. When our little ones cried, she would huddle near them. When someone was sick or sad, she positioned herself gingerly beside them. If you sat down, no matter where (or who) you were, your lap was fair game. I never read a book in the hammock that she did not find her way between my legs. People who don't like cats adored Fluffy and her unconditional, unobtrusive affection. Through 18 years, I don't believe she ever learned to hiss. She never scratched anyone or remotely considered biting anything other than her food. She was excellent at projecting love, spreading warmth, and simply being close to whomever she met. She slowed down, as we all must, this last year, but if it took a few extra lunges to get into the chair or bed, never did she complain. Even when walking got hard the last few days, she still found her favorite sunbeam and languished in it. The wonderful folks at Fork Union Animal Clinic helped us say goodbye. I thanked them for doing what must be the most difficult part of their job, but the veterinarian looked me in the eye and said that it was much easier when the people were emotional, for then they knew that the animal was truly loved. She was.

Their guidance and consideration of our preferences is reassuring. This week our beloved Tinkerbell's kidneys failed unexpectedly and we had to euthanize her within 24 hours. They made her comfortable while I returned from a trip so that I could be there. They were as sad as we were to lose her. I can't recommend them highly enough. We followed them from the Preston Ave location and will continue to commute to Crozet for the excellent care and compassion everyone at the office has shown our furbabies and us.

Old Dominion Crozet has exceptional veterinarians and staff that have constantly cared for my dogs…read morenearly as much as I do. Through completely healthy check-ups, complicated hereditary diseases, and even cancer, the entire office never left me alone to go through the wins and losses. That is profound to me, my husband, and our four dogs that have been patients over the last 7 years. Everyone takes a specific, personalized interest in what we have needed, and I trust them completely. The staff deferred to my decisions while equipping me with every possible avenue. Every visit, they took my lead, heard me out, evaluated my dogs completely, and never jumped to conclusions. There were no treatments that I was not fully educated about and followed up with every time. We have been through so much with our dogs, and the knowledge and collaboration with each other and my family has meant so much to us and made all of the difference in their treatment. I now understand what I will expect from all vet offices in the future, now that we have moved, because of the care, service, and wisdom they provided. We were valued, and my dogs were loved. After putting up hundreds of flyers, we got a call from Carrie who put together a person who was buying a leash for a dog they found, with us, the desperately searching, heartbroken dog owners. Although a reward was offered, Carrie refused it. While we were in her store, we noticed how welcoming and well-stocked it was, and what great items she carries. It is a great place to find whatever you need for your furbabies. Thanks' to Carrie, we were able to enjoy the holidays with Teddy, instead of anguishing over what might have happened to him. Dr. Belbey and his nurse, Trista, are awesome. We first had Dr. Belbey and Trista meet Oreo last…read moresummer. She was 16 at the time, and was diagnosed with a mouth issue and kidney failure. Dr. Belbey suggested surgery for Oreo's mouth issue, but after much discussions, we decided to not put Oreo through surgery. Instead, we were able to purchase an antibiotic every couple of months to give to Oreo to keep the mouth issue at bay. With the kidney failure, we kept in touch with Trista....Tuesday, Oreo had issues walking. We all thought it was a "by product" of kidney failure. Turned out Oreo had a stroke. And we had to say goodbye to Oreo today. I so appreciate the way Dr. Belbey and Trista helped up say goodbye to Oreo. I've had to put to sleep 2 other cats.....this was the best experience of the 3. So if your pet has a sudden illness you must find another vet. If that pets illness takes a turn for the worse and you need to euthanize, they will tell you take your pet somewhere else. In our experience we never got to speak directly with the vet. Only through the vet tech, so getting answers to questions took multiple calls.
